No.1 顺藤摸瓜
5W(what, who, when, where, why)要素。
No.2 左顾右盼
No.3 刨根问底
What can be inferred from …?"或是What does the author imply in…?"
No.4 拨云见日

For the 70 percent of the world's population without any chance of using electric washing machines, keeping up with laundry takes up a lot of time. And it is often a painful physical task. The task falls unreasonably to women and girls, who can spend 20 hours a week washing clothes, often without electricity or running water. London engineer Navjot Sawhney, however, has come up with an idea: a portable and lightweight washing machine that is similar to a plastic drum. It also does double duty as a dryer, and costs around $60.
31- year- old Sawhney calls it the Divya, after the woman who inspired the project—his former next- door neighbour in South India, where he spent a year volunteering after leaving his job as an engineer at high- end vacuum (真空吸尘器) maker Dyson. “When I got to know Divya, I was so sad about all the unpaid work she needed to do—cleaning clothes,” says Sawhney. In 2018, he returned to the United Kingdom to found “The Washing Machine Project”, which is developing a washing solution that will be affordable, portable and accessible for everyone, everywhere. After a few months of developing a model, he received some money from Oxfam's Iraq Response Innovation Lab.
Since March 2019, more than 150 Divyas have been given out to refugees in Iraq through non- profit partners. “The response was great,” Sawhney says. His goal is to deliver 8, 000 machines in 10 countries over the next three years. By saving 75 percent of the time and 50 percent of the water required to wash clothes, he says, women and girls will be freer to accept education.
Aside from the Divya, Sawhney has also worked on making fuel- efficient cookstoves, and plans to develop refrigerators, conditioners, and lighting. Sawhney sees the world's growing refugee crisis as a call for innovation: “There is a huge need for appliances that make life better for people.”

At just seven years old, Angelina Tsuboi discovered her passion for innovation. It all began with a simple game she programmed in her Los Angeles public school’s Grade 2class. Today , at18, the Grade 12 student’s initial curiosity has evolved into a deep-seated desire to use technology to decode (解码) real-world problems.
In 2021, she co-developed Megaphone, one of her first apps, to tackle unanswered post-class questions and poor communication about events and announcements. Her problem-solving ability kept building from there.
When she took online CPR classes at the start of the pandemic, she figured it couldn’t be just her who was struggling with the steps. So she created an app called CPR Buddy ― a winner in the 2022 Apple Swift Challenge ― which guides users through CPR using vibrations (震动) to regulate breath. After winning the award, Angelina presented her work to Apple CEO Tim Cook, a highlight in her young career, but one she didn’t lose her cool over. “There’s no point putting people on a pedestal (神坛),” she says.
The next year, Angelina built an app called Lilac, designed to assist nonEnglish-speaking single parents with resources for housing, job opportunities and translation support. She was inspired by her own experiences as a child of a single mother who immigrated to the US.
When Angelina decided to pursue pilot training at the age of 16, she was struck by how difficult it was to find financial support, which encouraged her to create yet another app, Pilot Fast Track, which helps those longing to be pilots find scholarships for flight training.
Looking to the future, besides applying to colleges with great labs, Angelina is exploring the field of aerospace cybersecurity and mechatronics ― combining computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.
“There’s not enough optimism in the world,“ she says. “I have also been in situations in my life where I’ve lost a lot of hope. But in the end, it is a mindset, and there are ways in any situation you’re in to make it somewhat better.”

In a surprising turn of events, Kathleen Murray, a resident of Tasmania, Australia, has secured victory in the globally recognised “World’s Ugliest Lawn (草坪)” competition. What was once considered an eyesore — with dry yellow grass, and drooping plants — has now become a symbol of water-saving inventiveness.
As the champion, Kathleen Murray was awarded a unique prize — a second-hand brown T-shirt generously donated by the 2023 winner. The shirt proudly displays the words: “Proud owner of The World’s Ugliest Lawn,” meaning celebrating the champion’s commitment to sustainable landscaping.
The “World’s Ugliest Lawn” competition had humble beginnings as a local contest on Sweden’s Gotland island. The primary objective was to emphasise the critical importance of saving water and discourage the conventional use of water to maintain green lawns. The region, plagued by frequent droughts and water supply challenges due to geographical limitations in groundwater storage, saw this competition as a creative means to promote a vital message. American actor and environmental advocate Shailene Woodley, known for her roles in the 2014 film The Fault in Our Stars and the HBO TV series Big Little Lies, played a crucial role in launching the international challenge.
Speaking to the ABC, Kathleen Murray shared an interesting aspect of her winning entry. Three wild rats had taken over her property, causing damage to the once-green lawn. Referring to them as her “wildlife of mass destruction”, Murray humorously noted, “I used to think they’d invaded my lawn, but then I realised they’d actually liberated me from ever having to cut it again.” This unexpected twist added a unique touch to her victory, showcasing the original beauty of nature.
Kathleen Murray’s victory in the “World’s Ugliest Lawn” contest symbolises a shift in perspective towards sustainable landscaping practices. As the movement gains strength, individuals worldwide are encouraged to reconsider their approach to lawn care, valuing water conservation over the pursuit of primitive green lawns. The competition, with its unusual charm, stands as a reminder that sometimes, embracing the undeveloped can lead to victory in unexpected ways.

Wendell Berry was almost 30 when he packed up his life as a New York intellectual and moved to Port Royal, a tiny community in Kentucky where generations of his forebears (祖先) had farmed the land. His friends thought he was mad. But he felt it was his inner calling to record the history of the place.
Since moving to Port Royal in 1964, he has lived as if he were in the 19th century, writing by hand and ploughing his fields with horses. His eight novels and more than 50 short stories are usually set in Port William, a stand-in (代替物) for Port Royal. Nick Offerman, an actor, wanted to adapt his work for the screen. However, the actor was refused.
In Mr Berry’s opinion, humans must take care of the earth that grants them life. “The soil is the greatest connector of lives,” he has written. “Without proper care for it we can have no community.” This philosophy dominates his writings. In The Unsettling of America, published in 1977, Mr Berry criticized the natural damage caused by large agribusinesses. He thinks capitalism has separated farming from culture and disconnected people from nature.
Mr Berry’s fiction explores the decline of values by following Port William’s interconnected clans (家族) as they enter the modern age. In Dismemberment, a short story, Andy Catlett loses a hand to a harvesting machine and becomes a loner. He sees his withdrawal is mistaken and reconnects with the town, finding “the wealth of an intimate history” in belonging to “his ancestral place”. In Hannah Coulter, Mr Berry’s seventh novel, the main character Hannah Coulter grows old after a sad life and anticipates loneliness when her children leave to find work in the city. Instead her hope is restored when her grandson returns to run the farm.
These stories offer insightful advice for readers living through ecological disaster. Though few can return to farming basics, Mr Berry’s messages of building communities, being a good neighbor and resisting the invitation of modern life are still valuable.
4.Why did Mr Berry’s friends think he was mad?
A.He moved to live in the countryside. B.He turned down Offerman’s request.
C.He wrote most of his novels by hand. D.He gave up his career as an intellectual.

A.The challenges of farming in old days. B.The harmony between man and nature.
C.The real benefits of large agribusinesses. D.The hard lives of his forebears in Kentucky.
6.What do Andy Catlett and Hannah Coulter have in common?
A.They are from the same novel. B.They both choose to live alone.

I know next to nothing about baseball. When in the right field during P. E. as a boy, I prayed the ball wouldn’t come to me. It took a miracle (奇迹) for me to catch it. Yet I later became the father of two boys, Will and Tim (8 and 5), who were both interested in baseball. On Saturday mornings, I’d take Will out to the playground and play catch with him. Thanks to my weak arm, the ball dropped before he could catch it. After many misses one day, he said, “How am I ever going to make the major leagues?” “You got the wrong dad, kid,” I thought. Baseball isn’t my thing.
Still, I wanted to give my kids confidence on the field. There was an official Little League in our area, but it was super-competitive and primarily targeted older boys. What if we had something more low-key, something that welcomed boys and girls, and younger ones?
I shared the idea with some neighbors. “That would be great!”they said. Now who could organize such a thing? Not me. I tried to put the idea aside, but it wouldn’t leave me. I finally decided that I must do something about it. So I called the city’s recreation department, explaining that some families wanted to start a baseball league in our neighborhood. Were there any fields for that? They bounced me around. Finally, I spoke to the official in charge. I got butterflies in my stomach. What if he said no? “Yes, we have something for you,” the man said, hearing my request. We got two fields for four hours every Sunday morning. Our league was founded. What a joy it was to sit on the benches, watching Will and Tim playing baseball! How grateful I was for other parents who did the coaching! And I became the most unlikely baseball commissioner (专员) ever.
Many years have passed. Now Will and Tim are new dads, and I can’t wait to see what they’ll have to do. I know better than anyone: Parenthood calls you to do the most unlikely things.

As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化). “Within10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable (可持续的) crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”
By September2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant l million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.

4.Why was a second-hand brown T-shirt mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To show its symbolism.
B.To present its practical value.
C.To reveal the owner’s identity.
D.To encourage charity work.
5.What does the underlined word “plagued” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Swept. B.Ruined. C.Disturbed. D.Characterized.
6.What does Kathleen Murray think of the three wild rats?
A.Frightening. B.Acceptable. C.Useless. D.Lovely.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The New Concept of Beauty Comes into Being
B.The Old View of Destructive Wildlife Needs Correcting
C.The World’s Ugliest Lawn Competition Redefines Sustainability
D.Then Unconventional Prize of an Old T-shirt Surprises the World
【答案】4.A 5.C 6.B 7.C
根据文章第二段“As the champion, Kathleen Murray was awarded a unique prize — a second-hand brown T-shirt generously donated by the 2023 winner. The shirt proudly displays the words: “Proud owner of The World’s Ugliest Lawn,” meaning celebrating the champion’s commitment to sustainable landscaping.(作为冠军,Kathleen Murray获得了一份独特的奖品——一件由2023年冠军慷慨捐赠的二手棕色T恤。 故选A。
根据文章第四段“Speaking to the ABC, Kathleen Murray shared an interesting aspect of her winning entry. Three wild rats had taken over her property, causing damage to the once-green lawn. Referring to them as her “wildlife of mass destruction”, Murray humorously noted, “I used to think they’d invaded my lawn, but then I realised they’d actually liberated me from ever having to cut it again.”(在接受美国广播公司(ABC)采访时,Kathleen Murray分享了她获胜作品的一个有趣方面。
根据文章第一段“In a surprising turn of events, Kathleen Murray, a resident of Tasmania, Australia, has secured victory in the globally recognised “World’s Ugliest Lawn (草坪)” competition. What was once considered an eyesore — with dry yellow grass, and drooping plants—has now become a symbol of water-saving inventiveness.(出乎意料的是,澳大利亚塔斯马尼亚州的居民Kathleen Murray在全球公认的“世界最丑草坪”比赛中获得了胜利。
5.What do Mr Berry’s writings often imply?
A.The challenges of farming in old days. B.The harmony between man and nature.
C.The real benefits of large agribusinesses. D.The hard lives of his forebears in Kentucky.
6.What do Andy Catlett and Hannah Coulter have in common?
A.They are from the same novel. B.They both choose to live alone.
C.They are victims of country life. D.They both find their values again.
7.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Wendell Berry: a rural writer living a modern life
B.Wendell Berry: a strong voice for modern farming
C.Discover why Wendell Berry’s rural tales shine
D.Find out how Wendell Berry adapts to new environments
【答案】4.A 5.B 6.D 7.C
根据第一段“Wendell Berry was almost 30 when he packed up his life as a New York intellectual and moved to Port Royal, a tiny community in Kentucky where generations of his forebears (祖先) had farmed the land. His friends thought he was mad.(Wendell Berry快30岁时结束了他在纽约的作家生涯,搬到了肯塔基州的一个小社区——罗亚尔港,他的祖先几代人都在这里耕种。 故选A项。
根据第三段“In The Unsettling of America, published in 1977, Mr Berry criticized the natural damage caused by large agribusinesses. He thinks capitalism has separated farming from culture and disconnected people from nature.(在1977年出版的《美国的不安》一书中,Berry批评了大型农业综合企业造成的自然破坏。
根据倒数第二段“In Dismemberment, a short story, Andy Catlett loses a hand to a harvesting machine and becomes a loner. He sees his withdrawal is mistaken and reconnects with the town, finding ‘the wealth of an intimate history’ in belonging to ‘his ancestral place’. In Hannah Coulter, Mr Berry’s seventh novel, the main character Hannah Coulter grows old after a sad life and anticipates loneliness when her children leave to find work in the city. Instead her hope is restored when her grandson returns to run the farm.(在短篇小说《肢解》中,安迪·卡特利特被收割机夺去了一只手,成为了一个孤独的人。
根据最后一段“These stories offer insightful advice for readers living through ecological disaster. Though few can return to farming basics, Mr Berry’s messages of building communities, being a good neighbor and resisting the invitation of modern life are still valuable.(这些故事为生活在生态灾难中的读者提供了深刻的建议。
24.Why did the author think his son Will got the wrong father?
A.He lacked confidence. B.He had poor baseball skills.
C.He had little energy or time. D.He didn’t know Will’s dream.
25.What special feature did the author expect the baseball league had?
A.Being easy to join. B.Having its own fields.
C.Focusing on training kids. D.Having professional coaches.
26.How did the author probably feel while talking to the official?
A.Confident. B.Peaceful. C.Nervous. D.Hesitant.
27.What does the author want to stress in the text?
A.The need to challenge oneself.
B.The greatness of parental love.
C.The responsibility of parenthood.
D.The role of sports in kids’ growth.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.C 27.C
