(2024·浙江温州·三模) I’d never told my mother about climbing the tree. If I told her, she would say it was too dangerous. My brothers, being brothers, wouldn’t have cared. Then there was my father. The only person I knew would understand. Still, I was afraid to tell him. He might tell my mother and very soon they’d try to stop me. So I kept quiet, kept climbing, and felt a somewhat lonely joy as I looked out over the world. Then a few months ago I found myself talking to the tree. This is a complete conversation, just me and a tree. And on the climb down I felt like crying. Why didn’t I have someone real to talk to? Why didn’t I have a best friend like everyone else? Sure, there were kids I knew at school, but none of them were close friends. They’d have no interest in climbing the tree or smelling the sunshine. That night, after dinner my father went outside to paint. In the cold of the night, under the porch light, he went out to put the unfinished painting on a sunrise he’d been working on. I got my jacket and went out to sit beside him, quiet as a mouse. After a few minutes, he said, “What’s on your mind, sweetheart?” I looked at him but couldn’t seem to speak. He mixed two kinds of orange together, and very softly he said, “Talk to me.” I sighed so heavily, and it surprised even me. “I understand why you come out here, Dad.” He tried kidding me. “Would you mind explaining it to your mother?” “I hope not, Dad. I understand now about the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.” He stopped his work. “You do? What happened? Tell me about it!” So I told him about the sycamore (无花果) tree. About the view and the sounds and the colors and the wind, how climbing up so high felt like flying, and how it felt like magic. He didn’t stopped me once, and when I finished my story, I looked at him and whispered, “Would you climb up there with me?” He thought about this for a long time, then smiled and said, “I’m not much of a climber, Julianna, but I’ll give it a shot, sure. How about this weekend, when we’ve got lots of time to work with?” “Great!” I went to bed so excited that I didn’t sleep for more than five minutes the whole night. Saturday was right around the corner. I couldn’t wait! —Adapted from “Flipped” 5.Who did the girl decide to tell about climbing the tree? A.Her mother. B.Her brothers. C.Her father. Salimpoor, a neuroscience graduate, was trying to decide on her future job. She felt that a drive might help clear her head. When she turned on the car radio, a piece of violin music came on: Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No.5. “Something just happened,” she recalls. “I just felt this feeling… It was so strong.” She stopped the car so she could focus on the music. She wondered why it had such a powerful influence on her. Salimpoor found a job working as a neuroscientist. Her research included scanning (扫描) people’s brain activity as they listened to music. She discovered that when people listen to the music they like, their brains filled with dopamine (多巴胺)—a chemical connected with pleasure and encouragement. In one experiment, people listened to the first 30 seconds of unfamiliar songs. The listeners were then given the choices of buying the full songs, using their own money. By studying dopamine-related areas of the people’s brains, Salimpoor was able to successfully predict which songs the people would choose to buy. She could tell what they liked and what they didn’t based on brain activity. But why might one person like a song while another person doesn’t? Salimpoor says it all depends on past musical experiences. “Eastern, Western, jazz, heavy metal, pop—all of these have different rules they follow,” she says. These rules are recorded as patterns, or templates (模板), in the brain. If the new music has a familiar (熟悉的) template, your brain lets out dopamine and brings a feeling of pleasure. This might explain why most people have a preference for a certain type of music. There are questions Salimpoor is still trying to answer: How does our brain make musical templates? Why do people with similar backgrounds have different preferences? Her research, though, has given her a new way to think about her experience years ago. “That day,” she says, “it all seemed like such a big mystery.” Now when she hears a piece of music she likes, she has a better understanding of what’s happening inside her brain. 13.Why did Salimpoor stop her car? A.To clear her head completely. B.To listen to the music carefully. C.To turn on the radio immediately. D.To do some research successfully. 14.What does “This” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A.Different kinds of music have different templates. B.Familiar templates brings dopamine and pleasure. C.Most people have a preference for a certain kind of music. D.People with similar backgrounds have different preferences. 15.What can we learn from the passage? A.What happens inside the brain while listening to music is still unknown. B.An experiment showed that classical music usually makes people happy. C.Salimpoor can tell what music people like based on their daily activities. D.Salimpoor found a link between music and chemical activity in the brain. 16.Which two questions does the passage answer? ① What is the happiest music to listen to? ② Why does music influence our feelings? ③ How does our brain make musical templates? ④ Why do different people like different kinds of music? A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.②④ (2024·浙江宁波·三模)My name is Susie. I have been a journalist (记者) for the school news paper since my first day here at my university. She didn’t even notice until she stood up and knocked them all over! It would not be surprising if this story were true. As a child, Marie loved books and experiments. Nothing could distract her from her studies. She did not lose this love of learning as she got older. In the 1880s, very few women went to college, and even fewer women became scientists. Marie did both. After she met and married another scientist, Pierre Curie, the two of them began working together. Their studies focused on the element radium (镭元素). They had discovered it during their research. Radium is found in some rocks. It is a white metallic element with a blue glow (微弱而稳定的光). The glow lasts for a thousand years. The radium glows because it produces energy. That is one reason why the Curies were so interested in it. But studying radium is not like opening a book. Radium must be isolated (分离) from the rock around it. That is like trying to take just the chocolate out of chocolate milk. The couple spent their life savings on eight tons of rock. An old shack (棚屋) became their workplace. They heated the rock to remove the bits of radium from it. Days of work turned into months. Finally, they spent four years in that shack studying the mysterious element with the blue glow. During their research, the Curies found that radium could help treat disease. That is when Marie and her husband became big news. They were written about often. This got the public interested in radium. Soon, the Curies’ work earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics. This award is one of the highest honors in the world. Marie had come a long way from the days of chair pyramids. 21.Why did Marie knock her sister’s chair pyramid over? The day kicked off with Mom’s mouth-watering gujiyas, those sweet, deep-fried Indian dumplings. The smell itself was a joyful wake-up call. At 8 a. m., I put on my old clothes because I knew they would get all colorful. I said “Happy Holi” to everyone, and they applied (涂抹) bright colors on my cheeks. I looked like a rainbow! By 10 a. m., there had already been so many kids in the neighborhood park. We had water guns and balloons filled with water and colored powders (粉末). We ran around and sprayed or threw the colored water at each other. I got totally wet and colorful, and so did everyone else. At noon, we were all super hungry after playing so much. We returned home. Mom had prepared a special Holi lunch. We had puris (small, round, flat pieces of bread), thandai (a milk-based sweet drink) and sweets. I ate so much. It was like a food festival! It felt like a Bollywood (宝莱坞) movie come to life. At 6 p. m., it started getting dark. We lit a bonfire called “Holika Dahan”. It was to remember a special story about Holi. We threw colored powder into the fire and watched it burn. It was like magic. At 8 p. m., I took a long bath to wash off all the colors, but some will stick around for a few days. It’s actually pretty cool—they will remind me of this colorful day! It’s 9 p. m., and it’s time for bed. I’m so sleepy, but I can’t stop smiling. They walked in and made straight for the sofa to lie down. Aged 10 and 12, they pulled out their smart phones and started gaming. It saddens me to watch them, and so many other kids today, see gaming as play. When I was a kid, I knew how to play. When I wanted a metal pedal car (踏板车) like some of my rich friends, my father made me one out of wood. At first, I was ashamed of the homemade toy. But I soon began to like it when my friends all wanted a ride. Dad also built a huge playhouse and several tree houses. When I was older, he made me a high stand. Dad just loved building things or he really, loved me, or maybe a little of both. In my neighborhood we didn’t have much to play with. For fun, we had to get creative. We put up tents in the backyard and camped out. At night, we looked for adventures on the streets. We once went on a week-long bike trip to Lake Huron (it’s 220 kilometers away). My grandchildren have no idea how much fun these activities can be. That Sunday night, after dinner, I decided to take them outside to show them something “different”. The first response (反应) was, “Why did we have to put our shoes on and go outside?” “Because I wanted to show you something,” I said and picked up my frisbee (飞盘). “I thought we could go outside and throw the frisbee around.” I got a slow and unwilling “Sure” for my efforts. With some further unwillingness, we walked out into the street and began throwing the frisbee back and forth badly. “Bend (使弯曲) your wrist (手腕),” I instructed helpfully. Slowly, we got the hang of it and hit the neighbor’s car only three times. It’s amazing how much a frisbee hurts when your fingers are cold, but we were making progress. My grandson found three excuses to go inside, Each time, though, his grandma kicked him back out. We played until the neighbor came to check on his car. It was a great success, I think, but alas, you cannot win a war by winning just one battle. 49.Which of the following is true according to the passage? 根据第一段“She stopped the car so she could focus on the music.”可知,她把车停了下来,以便专心听音乐。故选B。 14.词句猜测题。根据第三段“If the new music has a familiar (熟悉的) template, your brain lets out dopamine and brings a feeling of pleasure.”可知,如果新音乐有熟悉的模板,你的大脑就会释放多巴胺并带来愉悦的感觉。因此推知“This”指代“熟悉的模板就会释放多巴胺,带来愉悦感”。故选B。 15.细节理解题。根据第二段“She discovered that when people listen to the music they like, their brains filled with dopamine (多巴胺)—a chemical connected with pleasure and encouragement.”可知,Salimpoor发现音乐和大脑化学活动之间存在联系。故选D。 16.细节理解题。根据最后一段“She discovered that when people listen to the music they like, their brains filled with dopamine (多巴胺)—a chemical connected with pleasure and encouragement.”和“But why might one person like a song while another person doesn’t?”可知,文章回答了②④两个问题。故选D。 (2024·浙江宁波·三模)My name is Susie. Her sisters once built a pyramid (金字塔) of chairs around her. Marie was busy reading. A.Because she was angry with her sister. As the clock struck 2 p. m., it was time for our next adventure — visiting friends’ homes. There, we exchanged sweets and colors. I even met some new friends in the neighborhood. At 4 p. m., our local temple held a big Holi celebration. People played the drums and we danced to the music. Everyone was dancing and laughing together. And I couldn’t believe I would lose the friendship of the person I trusted the most. Five years back, Sally was the new kid in class. Rain drummed harder on the roof. “And it’s noisy!” Jenna shouted. Grandma came into the living room. “Did I hear you describe the rain as boring and noisy?” she asked. “Sounds like somebody got up on the wrong side of the bed.” “I did not,” Jenna said. “I got up the same way I always do.” “You know what I mean.” Grandma said. “Look,” Nikki came in and said. “I’ve been so patient. I’ve been waiting for months to wear these boots (靴子)! The yellow ducks look just like bath toys. However, one summer vacation, when she visited her favorite beach, she couldn’t help but notice the plastic water bottles everywhere. After learning more about plastic pollution, Madison invented the Eco-Hero, an edible (可食用的) water bottle. The invention helped her become one of the 30 finalists (决赛选手) in the 2022 Broadcom Masters Competition, an important competition for middle school students in the US. It took a lot of tries to get the Eco-Hero strong enough so that it wouldn’t break easily. “★ I saw that with her as she went through the process,” says Madison’s mother. “The biggest thing that she did was to keep trying new things.
