At an airport I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments together. They had announced her plane’s departure and standing near the door, he said to his daughter, “I love you, I wish you enough.” She said, “Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy.” They kissed good-bye and she left.
He walked over toward the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted to cry. He asked me, “Did you ever say good- bye to someone knowing it would be forever?” “Yes, I have,” I replied. Saying that brought back memories I had of expressing my love and appreciation for all my Dad had done for me. Recognizing that his days were limited, I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant to me. So I knew what this man was experiencing.
“Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?” I asked. “I am old and she lives much too far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is, her next trip back will be for my funeral,” he said.
“What do you mean by ‘I wish you enough.’ I asked. He began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.” He paused for a moment and looking up as if trying to remember it in detail, he smiled even more.
“When we said ‘I wish you enough,’ we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with enough good things to sustain them,” he continued, “I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your desire. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough’ Hello’s to get you through the final’ Good-bye’.” He then began to sob and walked away.

The People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM 洲际弹道导弹) into the Pacific Ocean at 08:44 on September 25, 2024.
The missile carried a dummy warhead (模拟弹头) and landed in a specific area, as part of routine military training. The spokesperson for the defense ministry emphasized that the nuclear policy of China is stable, consistent, and predictable, and that the country maintains its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level necessary for national security. The launch was not aimed at any specific country or target and corresponded with international law and practice. Prior to the launch, China had notified several countries through military diplomatic channels (外教途径), demonstrating openness and transparency (透明). This test launch is a routine arrangement in the annual training plan and is completely lawful.
The missile launch has raised eyebrows internationally, as it is considered rare for China to test ICBMs in international waters. The last known similar test was conducted in May 1980. Typically, China carries out ballistic missile tests within its own airspace or over the Bohai Sea.
The test comes at a time when China is increasing its military presence in the region, which has been a cause for concern among neighboring countries and the international community. Despite this, China has maintained that its military activities are defensive in nature and not aimed at any specific nation.
The launch also coincides with the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York, where U. S. President Joe Biden discussed strengthening relationships with Japan and South Korea as part of a strategy to counter China’s influence in the region.
While some analysts have compared the launch to the Soviet Union’s Sputnik (人造卫星) moment, indicating a potential shift in the balance of power, China has downplayed the significance of the test, stating it is part of its nuclear modernization efforts and not intended to threaten any country and underlining its sticking to international norms and laws.
8. What was the purpose of China’s missile launch on September 25?
A. To threaten a specific country. B. To test its nuclear capabilities.
C. To celebrate a national holiday. D. To conduct a routine military training.
9. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the missile launch?
A. The missile was aimed at a specific target.
B. The missile launch was a violation of international law.
C. China notified several countries before the launch.
D. The missile launch was a response to military threats.
10. What was the reaction of the international community to the missile launch?
A. There was widespread disapproval. B. It was considered a rare and concerning event.
C. All countries agreed it was a lawful action. D. The launch was ignored by the media.
11. What does the underlined word “downplayed” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Explained. B. Highlighted. C. Understated. D. Emphasized.

We have all heard of individuals who can’t carry a tune. They are the people whose attempts at singing are usually met with laughter, criticism, as well as insensitive comments like, “Don’t quit your day job!” These individuals are labeled as “tone deaf”. But is tone deafness a real condition? And if so, why are some people tone deaf?
In short, yes, tone deafness is a genuine neurological (神经系统的) disorder that is medically known as amusia (失音症). However, not everyone who lacks musical skills has this condition, which affects an estimated four percent of the population.
For the majority of sufferers, a poor musical environment does not seem to be the issue. “It is hereditary (遗传的),” said Isabelle Peretz, a professor of psychology at the University of Montreal. Most amusics are born that way. Research shows that children with amusia usually have the same abnormal profile as amusic adults. Some people can develop amusia later in life, usually as a consequence of having a stroke (中风) or serious brain injury.
While some individuals with amusia are fully aware they have it, others can live for years without knowing about their condition. This is because amusia can range in severity, from mild difficulty in recognizing melodies to a complete inability to distinguish between different musical notes.
The most common form of amusia is pitch- based (基于音高的).“Despite this challenge, these people are able to process and recognize common environmental sounds, human voices, or the rhythm and musical quality of speech. The disorder appears to be specific to the music al domain.”
Some studies suggest that people with pitch- based amusia do have difficulty processing melodic information in speech. “However, usually intonation is not the only sign we rely on to understand spoken communication, so in daily life this is likely to be much less noticeable,” Wise added.
Studies show that it might be possible to help those with amusia. “Amusic brains receive and respond to pitch information, but it’s not reaching conscious awareness. The neurons fire in response to pitch differences that the person can’t distinguish,” Wise explained, “Maybe if we could develop training methods using that unconscious response, we could find a way to overcome it.”
12. What is one of the features of tone deafness?
A. It mainly runs in the family. B. It is merely a lack of musical talent.
C. It is usually due to a brain injury or stroke. D. It results from a poor musical environment.
13. What can we learn about people with pitch- based amusia?
A. They can’t distinguish pitch differences.
B. They can be identified easily in daily life.
C. They usually have difficulty in understanding everyday sounds.
D. They may struggle with processing melodic elements in speech.
14. Why does the author write the last but one paragraph?
A. To explain conscious awareness. B. To offer hope to people with amusia.
C. To provide ways to train amusic brains. D. To show the mechanisms of amusic brains.
15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Why Some Can’t Carry a Tune B. The Science of Tone Deafness
C. Exploring Musical Inability D. Amusia: Understanding Tone Deafness

Mr Dalton was not just an ordinary teacher, but also one of those rare educators who truly loved and enjoyed teaching. ‘ His happiness spread through his smile as he stood in front of the class, showing his deep love for plane geometry (平面几何). I was a quiet, shy kid who just didn’t say much. I neither got in trouble nor got noticed. Somehow, plane geometry really became popular with me in his class.
Toward the end of the year, Mr Dalton wanted to check our knowledge of geometry and gave us a 25- question true-false nationally standardized test. The test presented each problem with a conclusion shown. If we could prove the result using our theorems (定理), the answer was true. If it couldn’t be proved, it was false.
I quickly finished 24 problems. However, number 17 seemed to be a great challenge. I knew deep down that I had the ability to prove its truth, but the exact approach was not immediately obvious. Finally, I spent 30 minutes working on that proof until it was completed. Satisfied, I marked the question true and handed in the completed test.
The following day, when the results came back, my score was an impressive 96, signaling a solid grasp of the subject. However, to my surprise and disappointment, number 17 was marked as incorrect. It was a blow to my confidence, but I couldn’t ignore the efforts I had put into that problem. When Mr Dalton asked if there were any questions, for the first time, gathering all my courage, I raised my hand and spoke up, “The correct answer to number 17 is true!”
Instead of arguing that this was a nationally standardized test and what I could possibly know about the answer, Mr Dalton did the most powerful thing I have ever seen a teacher do. Saying nothing and smiling encouragingly, he held out his chalk to me in the front of the class.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
I walked to the blackboard for the first time and showed my proof to the class.

Since that day in his geometry class, I have changed a lot. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

根据上文“Time is a precious resource. Sometimes it’s taken for granted, but often we feel there’s never enough of it. We sometimes rush through our days, constantly trying to get more done in less time. Other times we get lost in activities like scrolling on our phones. Often, we feel the scarcity (稀缺) of time and we feel a lack of control over it.(时间是一种宝贵的资源。

This will help you make choices in the future.(我们选择根据对我们来说重要的事情来花费时间,但我们中的许多人都是无意识地这样做的。坐下来列出生活中你想花时间做的最重要的事情。然后想象你只剩下一个月的生命。这将帮助你在未来做出选择。)”可知此处强调了在明确价值观和优先级的基础上,合理分配时间的重要性,与F项“We all have the time we need— we just need to prioritize it.(我们都有我们需要的时间——我们只需要优先考虑它。)”表达的意思一致,故选F项。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Once we know how we spend our time and what we want to spend time on, we can start to make adjustments and set boundaries.(一旦我们知道如何花费时间和想要花费时间做什么,我们就可以开始做出调整并设定界限。)”可知上文说的是开始做出调整并设定界限,可推理出此处在提出设定界限之后,需要说明如何设定界限,与D项“This means canceling things that are not important.(这意味着取消不重要的事情。)”表达的意思一致,故选D项。
【20题详解】
根据上文“One of the best ways to have a healthy relationship with time is to learn to enjoy the present moment. This means taking time to appreciate the little things in life, such as a beautiful sunset or a good conversation with friends. Every hour we are alive is a gift.(与时间保持健康关系的最佳方式之一是学会享受当下的时刻。这意味着花时间欣赏生活中的小事,比如美丽的日落或与朋友愉快的交谈。我们活着的每一小时都是一份礼物。)”可知上文提到的是享受当下,可以推理出此处表达的是享受当下的重要性,与C项“Learn to enjoy the present moment with gratitude.(学会感激地享受当下的时刻。)”表达的含义一致,故选C项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
I walked to the blackboard for the first time and showed my proof to the class.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Since that day in his geometry class, I have changed a lot. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I walked to the blackboard for the first time and showed my proof to the class. My heart was pounding as I explained my reasoning, but Mr. Dalton's reassuring smile gave me the confidence to continue. As I finished my explanation, the class erupted in applause, and I could see the pride on Mr. Dalton's face. He announced that I had indeed proven the correct answer to number 17 and awarded me an A+ for my effort.
Since that day in his geometry class, I have changed a lot. I became more confident in expressing my opinions and sharing my ideas with others. I started participating more in class discussions and even joined the debate team. Mr. Dalton's encouragement not only helped me excel in plane geometry but also taught me the importance of believing in myself and standing up for what I know is right. His impact on my life has been immeasurable, and I will forever be grateful for the lessons he taught me both inside and outside the classroom.
