Presentation
1. Simple sentence
A simple sentence is made up of one independent clause which has one subject-verb combination.
T: What do you think the sentences we just reviewed belong to?
I saw a cat.
I saw a cute cat.
S: They are simple sentences.
Tip: Sometimes two or more juxtaposed subjects have a common predicate, or even two juxtaposed predicates, and such sentences are still simple.
eg: Lucy and I often work together and help each other.
2. Compound sentence.
A sentence containing two or more independent subject-predicate structures or simple sentences is called a compound sentence. They are usually joined by commas, semicolons, or parallel conjunctions.
(1) A compound sentence indicating a relationship
and, not only…but also…, neither…nor…
eg: He gave me a present,and I like it very much.
(2) The juxtaposition of disjunctive relations
but, while,yet
eg: He is old but he is in good health.
He is tall while his sister is short.
(3) A compound sentence indicating a choice relationship
or,either..…or…,not.but…
eg: Either you are right,or I am.
3. Complex sentence
A sentence consisting of one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses is called a complex sentence. The main sentence is the main part of the compound sentence, and the subordinate clause is the part that modifies the main sentence or some component of the main sentence. In the main sentence, clause can act as subject, object, predicate, appositive, attributive, adverbial and so on.
eg:Check all your answers before you hand in your pape A doctor is a person who looks after people's health.(定语从句)
What he did made his mother very angiy.(主语从句)
Parents shouldn't give their children whatever they warn.(宾语从句)
This is because you are too careless.(表语从句)
The girls were surprised at the fact that ocean ships can sail up the Great Lakes.(同位语从句)
