It’s no wonder that the train from London to Edinburgh is one of Trainline’s top three bestselling routes for American travelers. Here are the most popular routes to explore the Scottish Highlands by train, all starting in Edinburgh.
For those seeking out the fabled Loch Ness monster, Inverness is the closest train station to the famous lake. From the station, travelers can take a bus or taxi to Fort Augustus and board a boat tour or fishing charter to try to spot the creature. Even if she isn’t found, Loch Ness is still a sight for the eyes, with a historic port and trails through the forests and past waterfalls. Being Scotland’s second-largest lake and holding more water than any other lake in the U. K., Loch Ness is a great place to fish or boat.
Although a long train ride, the trip from Edinburgh to Mallaig, a charming fishing village, is worth it. This route offers some of the best scenery in the world — in fact, riders might recognize the train, which goes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, as Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express. Travelers can board the 19th-century-inspired Jacobite Steam Train and wind past attractive villages, the Morar River and beaches.
At an altitude of over 4,412 feet, Ben Nevis is an ancient volcano that exploded and collapsed on itself to become the tallest mountain in the British Isles. Travelers can take the train to Fort William, a town offering castles, distilleries, and rocky coastlines. The town is also titled as the “Outdoor Capital” of Scotland, so thrill seekers can go skiing and hiking to their hearts’ desire. If hiking Ben Nevis doesn’t sound appealing, there’s also a boat tour that provides impressive views.
21.What can be learned about the train to Mallaig?
A.It has the longest train route in Scotland.
B.It goes past a famous lake in Scotland.
C.It once appeared in the movie Harry Potter.
D.It was invented in the 19th century.
22.What do the three routes have in common?
A.They extend along the south coast.
B.They win popularity with global travelers.
C.They offer a chance to explore historical castles.
D.They share the same starting station.
23.Which place is best suited to sports lovers?
A.Fort Augustus. B.Fort William.
C.Glenfinnan Viaduct. D.Mallaig.

My senior year at Westfield High School was supposed to be the best year of my life. Instead, it turned into a lesson about friendship that I would never forget.
My best friend, Emily, and I had been inseparable since middle school. But as graduation approached, the stress of exams and college applications began to weigh heavily on us. Emily and I became distant because of the different classes. I was focused on getting into a top university, while Emily was more interested in enjoying our last year together and having a better friend. Our differing goals led to disagreements, and soon enough, we started to argue over the smallest things.
One day, things reached a boiling point. We had a huge fight over a group project. Days turned into weeks, and our friendship seemed beyond repair. We avoided each other at school and stopped sitting together at lunch. Our friends tried to help, but neither of us was willing to make the first move. The silence between us was deafening, and I missed her more than I wanted to admit.
It wasn’t until our English teacher assigned us to work together on a final presentation that we were forced to confront each other. At first, we worked in tense silence. But as we spent more time together, the ice began to melt. One evening, as we were finishing up our project, Emily broke the silence. “I miss us,” she said softly. “I miss you, too,” I admitted, feeling a lump in my throat. “I’m sorry for being so hard on you. I just wanted everything to be perfect.” “I’m sorry too,” Emily replied. “I should have been more understanding. We’re both stressed, but we shouldn’t let it ruin our friendship.” We hugged, and at that moment, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
On the graduation day, we stood side by side, proud of what we had accomplished and grateful to each other. The experience made our bond stronger, and we knew that no matter where life took us, we would always be there for each other. Time will help you screen the right people. The true bonds won’t be changed by anything. If you don’t value it, countless regret will come to you some day when you can’t get it again.
24.What caused the initial tension between the author and Emily?
A.Conflicts over college applications.
B.Differences in academic performance.
C.Different approaches to their group project.
D.Varied priorities about their final year.
25.What made them restore their friendship?
A.Their friends’ assistance. B.A school teacher’s intervention.
C.Working on a school project together. D.Taking a timely break from each other.
26.How did the author feel after making up with Emily?
A.Anxious. B.Relieved. C.Stressed. D.Uncertain.
27.Which of the following suits the story best?
A.A friend is easier lost than found.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.True friendship can stand the test of huge conflicts or quarrels.
D.Friendship, once broken, will never be the same again.

Recently a Beijing father sent in a question at an Internet forum asking what “PK” meant. "My family has been watching the 'Singer 2024' singing competition TV program . My little daughter asked me what 'PK' meant, but I had no idea," explained the puzzled father.
To a lot of Chinese young people who have been playing games online, it is impossible not to know this term. In such Internet games, “PK” is short for "Player Kill", in which two players fight until one ends the life of the other.
In the case of the “Singer 2024” singing competition, “PK” was used to refer to the stage where two singers have to compete with each other for only one chance to go up in competition ranking. For example, in the final, there is Na Ying with Tan Weiwei, only one of whom has the prize for championship.
Like this father, Chinese teachers at high schools have also been finding their students' compositions using Internet jargons (行话) which are difficult to understand. A high school teacher from Tianjin asked her students to write compositions with simple language, but they came up with a lot of Internet jargons that she didn't understand.
"My 'GG' came back this summer from college. He told me I've grown up to be a 'PLMM'. I loved to 'FB' with him together; he always took me to the 'KPM'," went one composition.
"GG" means Ge Ge (Chinese pinyin for brother). "PLMM" refers to Piao Liang Mei Mei (beautiful girl). "FB" means Fu Bai (corruption). "KPM" is short for KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonald's.
Some specialists welcome Internet jargons as a new development in language.
If you do not even know what a Kong Long (dinosaur, referring to an ugly looking female) or a Qing Wa (frog, referring to an ugly looking male) is, you will possibly be regarded as a Cai Niao!
28.By writing the article, the writer tries to ________ .
A.explain some Internet language
B.suggest common Internet language
C.laugh at the Beijing father
D.draw our attention to Internet language
29.What does the writer think about the term “PK”?
A.Fathers can't possibly know it. B.The daughter should understand it.
C.Online game players may know it. D."Singer 2024" shouldn't have used it.
30.The examples of the Beijing father and the Tianjin teacher are used to show that Internet jargons ________ .
A.are used not only online
B.can be understood very well
C.are welcomed by all the people
D.cause trouble to our mother tongue
31.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A puzzled father B.Do you speak Internet-ish?
C.Keep away from Internet-ish D.Kong Long or Qing Wa?
D
When I teach research methods, a major focus is peer review. As a process, peer review evaluates academic papers for their quality, integrity and impact on a field, largely shaping what scientists accept as “knowledge”- By instinct, any academic follows up a new idea with the question, “Was that peer reviewed?”
Although I believe in the importance of peer review and I help do peer reviews for several academic journals-I know how vulnerable the process can be.
I had my first encounter with peer review during my first year as a Ph. D student. One day, my adviser handed me an essay and told me to have my -written review back to him in a week. But at the time, I certainly was not a “peer” — I was too new in my field. Manipulated data (不实的数据) or substandard methods could easily have gone undetected. Knowledge is not self-evident. Only experts would be able to notice them, and even then, experts do not always agree on what they notice.
Let’s say in my life I only see white swans. Maybe I write an essay, concluding that all swans are white. And a “peer” says, “Wait a minute, I’ve seen black swans.” I would have to refine my knowledge.
The peer plays a key role evaluating observations with the overall goal of advancing knowledge. For example, if the above story were reversed, and peer reviewers who all believed that all swans were white came across the first study observing a black swan, the study would receive a lot of attention.
So why was a first-year graduate student getting to stand in for an expert? Why would my review count the same as an expert’s review? One answer: The process relies almost entirely on unpaid labor.
Despite the fact that peers are professionals, peer review is not a profession. As a result, the same over-worked scholars often receive masses of the peer review requests. Besides the labor inequity, a small pool of experts can lead to a narrowed process of what is publishable or what counts as knowledge, directly threatening diversity of perspectives and scholars. Without a large enough reviewer pool, the process can easily fall victim to biases, arising from a small community recognizing each other’s work and compromising conflicts of interest.
Despite these challenges, I still tell my students that peer review offers the best method for evaluating studies and advancing knowledge. As a process, peer review theoretically works. The question is whether the issues with peer review can be addressed by professionalizing the field.
32.What can we learn about peer review in the first paragraph?
A.It generates knowledge. B.It is commonly practiced.
C.It is a major research method. D.It is questioned by some scientists.
33.What can be inferred about the example of swans?
A.Complexity of peer review ensures its reliability.
B.Contradictions between scientists may be balanced.
C.Individuals can be limited by personal experiences.
D.Experts should detect unscientific observation methods.
34.What is the author’s major concern about peer review?
A.Workload for scholars. B.Toughness of the process.
C.Diversification of publications. D.Financial support to reviewers.
35.The passage is mainly about ______.
A.what fuels peer review B.why peer review is imperfect
C.how new hands advance peer review D.whether peer reviewers are underrated

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。
In Chinese traditional architecture, a skywell is an open courtyard or well-like space usually located at the heart of a building or group of buildings. 36 Their designs often feature the classic Chinese dou gong overhangs to provide shade and collect water into a central basin.
Chinese skywells are so effective in cooling homes because they can control natural airing. Cool air is drawn into the building from the lower levels, and warm air escapes and rises through the upper levels. 37
The skywell’s layout and construction materials also help in thermal(热量的)regulation. During the day, the courtyard absorbs heat from the sun, acting as a thermal mass. 38 This day-night cycle helps maintain a balanced and consistent temperature indoors.
Most traditional skywells include water features, such as fountains or ponds. A recent study has shown that the most significant part of a skywell’s cooling effect comes from these water bodies. 39 As water evaporates(蒸发)from these features, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air. This reduces the temperature within the courtyard and surrounding rooms.
40 One fitting example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology Research Centre in Jinan, an 18-story building that has a giant open space at its heart from the fifth floor to the top floor. The toilets, elevators, and meeting rooms surround this space. This enhances natural airing and natural energy consumption, according to the Shanghai-based CCDI Group.
A.This promotes fresh air flow, especially during hot summer days.
B.It is often a square surrounded by the building’s rooms and wings.
C.This cooling was disadvantageous in regions with hot and dry climates.
D.It’s probably why temperatures around them are 2.6℃ to 4.2℃ lower.
E.These wonders continue to inspire architects to seek sustainable solutions.
F.The magic of skywells stands as witnesses to the wisdom of ancient builders.
G.The stored heat is gradually released as the outdoor temperature drops at night.

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Storing renewable energy 56 hydrogen(氢)could soon become much easier thanks to a new catalyst (催化剂) based on single atoms of platinum (铂). 57 new catalyst, designed by researchers at City University Hong Kong (City U) and tested by fellows at Imperial College London, could 58 (scale) up for mass use.
Co-author Professor Anthony Kucernak, from the Department of Chemistry at Imperial, said, “The UK Hydrogen Strategy sets out an ambition to reach 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030. To facilitate that goal, we need to hasten the production of cheap, easy-to-produce and efficient storage of hydrogen. This new electrocatalyst could be a major
59 (contribute) or to this, ultimately helping the UK meet its net-zero goals by 2050.”And this will be accepted 60 (public).
Renewable energy generation, from sources like wind and solar, is rapidly growing. However, there is much scientific evidence 61 (prove) some of the energy generated needs storing for when weather conditions are unfavourable for wind and sun. One promising way to do this is to save the energy in the form of hydrogen, 62 can be stored and transported for later use.
To achieve this goal, 63 (concert) efforts are necessary. China is bringing nature closer to urban life from pocket parks to forest parks. Parks can do good for the environment too. Take Beijing’s Central Green Forest Park as an example. The park has reached carbon-neutral (碳中和) 64 it was opened in 2020. This means that though the carbon dioxide is produced from the park’s facilities, the plants there can absorb more to make up. It also fully reuses rainwater and creates green energy, such as solar energy, to supply the park. So the person
65 (frequent) parks will benefit most.

“Have you decided on your major?” my parents inquired.
“Bioengineering, of course.” I responded without the slightest hesitation.
I entered this world with Poland syndrome, a disease that prevented the formation of my right arm and pectoral muscles (胸肌). My parents, believing that playing with Lego could enhance my dexterity(灵巧), gifted me my first kit when I was five. Struggling to piece the components together, I crafted my first Lego work – a car. As I got older, I grew obsessed with Lego Technic, a more advanced range, and how to use it to build more delicate structures. By the age of nine, I had fashioned my first prosthetic arm(义肢)using Lego Technic – a simple box that perfectly accommodated my right arm.
This early creation sparked my drive for further exploration. Years later, I developed another prosthetic arm that I called the MK-1, which had fingers, a motor, a pressure sensor, a movable elbow joint, and a grabber capable of picking things up.
Before constructing it, I had already decided against traditional prosthetics. Not because they were ineffective, but because playing with Lego did significantly improve my dexterity, helping me adapt to my condition. However, a more frustrating reason was that prosthetics were too expensive. My parents and I had looked into getting one a few years earlier, only to be discouraged by the prohibitive price. So, I concluded that I might not need one because I was managing well without. Nevertheless, the joy of creating prosthetics with Lego remained, and I continued making them purely for the fun of it.
As the years passed, my creations evolved from MK-1 to the more advanced and comfortable MK-V. It featured a control unit that could send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the motors, with cables that contract like muscles.
One day, a couple with their eight-year-old son, who lost both arms in an accident, reached out to me after learning about my creations. Short of money, they couldn’t afford well-functioning prosthetics. “Daniel,” the father earnestly asked, “we were wondering if you could possibly help build a set of prosthetics for our son.”

W: Tom,how did you do in the writing contest?
M: If only I had paid more attention to spelling.
(Text 2)
M: I really think they should let more people on at this time of the day.
W: But they won't allow people to stand on the bus.
M: I don't mind that. I think I'll go by underground tomorrow.
W: No, not me, I can't stand all stuck in standing. Besides,I need to look at the scenery.
(Text 3)
M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe, Dorothy. When are you leaving?
W: In just two days. But there're still a few things I need to do before I go, like figuring out what to do with my apartment while I'm gone. I don't like the idea of paying a fortnight for an empty apartment.
(Text 4)
M: I get off work early so I've found something fun to do in the evening.
W: Oh, something artistic? I know you taught Henry how to draw.
M: I do teach him for fun but no.It's a computer programming course.I wanted something new and challenging.
(Text 5)
W: Can I take this bus to the art museum?
M: No,this bus goes north to Bank Street. You want a bus that goes the opposite way.

第二节
(Text 6)
M: Do you ever use the bus between Boroughbridge and Malton?
W: No, is it any good?
M: Could be worse, I suppose, and I can't say it's cheap. You can save a bit by buying a season ticket, but not actually that much.
W: Really?
M: Well what it does have in its favor is that it seldom runs behind schedule.Although it's a shame it only runs every three quarters of an hour.
W: I'll stick to my motorbike, then!
M: You can't read your book on that, though, can you?
W: No, true, but I like to get to places quickly!

W: So how did you like the new sports center?
M: Well, there's a wide choice of things to do … It's just that their advertisements said“something to suit all the family”. I wish they had water games for the children who are under-fives. There was nothing really suitable for them. But you can learn to windsurf or sail, and you have the
freedom to go anywhere in the lake...
W: Isn't that a bit dangerous?
M:Not really. The center covers a huge area. If someone got into trouble,a lifeguard will go there by ferry in no time.Nobody's allowed in the water without a life jacket.

M: Hi, Claire. You look a bit unhappy. What's the matter?
W: Well, it's my dad. You know my mom is always telling me to tidy my bedroom? Dad has posted a picture of my untidy room on his website. I'm so embarrassed. I'm 20 and he's acting as if I'm still a little kid.
M: Have you tidied it up now?
W: Not yet. I'm not going to let him think his plan has been successful. Anyway it's impossible to keep my room tidy all the time because it's so small. I don't even have the room to put my books.
M: I'm sure that he just meant it as a joke. But have you thought about living alone?
W: Of course, but everywhere is so expensive.
M: You know that my sister has been looking for a new apartment. And she's found one that she really likes , but it's too large for one person so she's trying to share it with someone.
W: Well, that's unexpected. Thanks, Steve. I'll reach her right away.

(Text 9)
W: Marco works for PAF, he's in the creative department, we know him, he knows us. But is that an advantage?
M: Well, we need a manager to make the new plan work. We don't really need new ideas. Marco's
experienced. Hiring someone new is … obviously a risk.
W: OK. He enjoys working for the company; he's not going to leave suddenly; he's popular in the
department, but … that doesn't mean he's good at managing a team.

Currently, many students attach little importance to doing sports due to heavy study schedules and lack of motivation for exercise.
In my view, taking regular exercise is of great significance. Besides, working out regularly not only strengthens our willpower but also lightens our moods. In conclusion, reviving passion for sports is essential for our present and future development. I do hope that everyone can be healthy both in body and in mind.

67.One possible version:
I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”. The boy lifted his head with his once lifeless eyes now glittering with a spark of hope. I beamed at him with a radiant smile and without any delay, embarked on the task. The subsequent days witnessed how I carefully selected the Lego pieces that catered to the boy’s interests and intricately integrated practical components to enhance its flexibility. Days turned into weeks, and the boy-customized prosthetics finally took shape. It’s time for them to fulfill their intended purpose.
I rushed to the boy’s home and secured the prosthetics onto him. Holding breath, we anxiously awaited the result — they worked! The room erupted with cheers! The boy expressed his gratitude and sprinted to his parents to envelop them in the biggest hug he hadn’t been able to give for years. The scene was truly inspiring. Never had I imagined that my creations, born out of mere fun, would someday make such a profound difference. It is on that day that I made up my mind to commit myself to making a lasting impact in the realm of prosthetic innovation.
