Given their reputation as solitary creatures that come together only to mate and hibernate ()the idea of snakes
hanging out in groups with their "best friends"may sound a little far-fetched.However,a recent study conducted by
researchers from Canada's Wilfrid Laurier University states that the snakes not only actively seek out socialization with
2
their peers, but are also extremely particular about who they spend time with.
For the study, the team led by Ph.D.student Morgan Skinner and associate professor Dr.Noam Miller, selected 40
non-poisonous garter snakes.Ten were from a single httcr purchased from a snake breeden while the remaining were
captured from the wild. After marking each sample with a bit of color to allow for easy identification.the researchers
placed ten snakes inside each of the four plastic shelters contained within a tabletop enclosure )
Skinner photographed each snake group twice a day before removing them from their shelters. After cleaning the
areas thoroughly to rid them or any familiar smells, the snakes were rearranged into different groups and returned to the
enclosure.A camera placed over the shelters allowed the scientists to capture the animals'movements every five seconds,
12 hours a day.for a total of eight days.
When Skinner and Miller analyzed the images, they found that regardless ot where they were placed, the snakes
always found their original"friends",forming groups of three or eight inside the small shelters."They have experienced
social cognition,"Miller told National Geographic,"They can tell others apart."
The scientists, who published their findings in the joumal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, are not sure why
the snakes seek out friendships. However, they believe the animals would not waste their energy forming bonds unless it
was beneficial to them.Miller assumes mat the tendency for snake friends to can up with one another probably helps
keep wet and warm in the wild.Being in groups may also help keep predators at bay.

Curiosity has always been one of the most inbom and dominant qualities of humankind. Our endless pursuit of truth
and reasons has resulted in a lot of crucial discoveries in the world. However, the more we uncover the world, the more
we end up generating more questions to answer.Out of all the wonders of the world, human psychology is believed to be
one of the most controversial. The complexity of the mind and its reflection on human behavior has been a subject of
many studies and debates. One of the oldest and, still, most talked about in psychology is the nature against nurture
3
debate.
Nature refers to the biological structure and processes that determine a person's physical and behavioral
attributes()Scientists have uncovered that physical traits such as eye color, hair type, and life expectancy of a
person can strongly be related to the genetic makeup. These discoveries have led to the speculation that most
psychological characteristics like intellect, personality, and language acquisition ability are already pre-wired to our
system through our genetic patter.
In contrast, nurture theory suggests that behavior is developed and improved from socio-cultural factors. This
theory is guided by Joh Locke's"blank slate'thcory, which refers to the idea that the human mind,in its original state,
is ablank that is gradually filled in with information obtained from direct and indirect experiences.
The term Nature vs.Nurture debate was put forward by Sir Francis Gallon, who believed that intellect is a
quatifiable and hereditary.(human trait. He also believed that intellect can be passed from generation to
0
generation. Thus, people with high intelligence have a major chance of having highly intellectual offspring, while people
having lower than average intelleet are more likely to have low intellectual offspring. However, the believers of nurture
theory believed that intellect is not a product of heredity but more of a result of the social construct.
Countless research and experimentation have been conducted to put an end to the seemingly endless debate.
Psychologists and researchers of the present already embrace the idea that a person's character is highly influenced by
his genetic makeup and the environment. The years of labored research on nature and nurture theory finally have bom
fruits.
32.Why does the author mention"curiosity"in the first paragraph?
A.To predict the research results.
B.To emphasize the importance of exploring.
C.To lead to the argument of nature against nurture.
D.To raise the reader's interest in the theory of nature.
33.What does John Locke's"blank slate"theory suggest?
A.Human mind is always blank.
B.People's behaviors are leared.
C.Behavior is determined genetically.
D.Culture has little influence on human
34.What is the attitude of Sis Francis Galton towards the theory of nurture?
A:Disapproving.
B.Supportive.
C.Neutral.
D.Cautious.
35.Which of the following might the author agree with?

was crazy about singing Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart's conteni. Her sweet and charming
voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city,I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her.Soon after
Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on
how to sing.Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later,Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was
rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet.I
froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world.Weak and dizzy,I was about to fall to the ground
when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me,saying firmly,"Grace,Jane needs you.You must
stay calm and strong."I nodded.Having calmed down,I entered the ward with Mary.
That night,Jane recovered her consciousness()and opened her eyes.Holding her hand,I said,"My dear,
everything would be fine."Mary comforted her gently,"I know you are a strong girl,Jane.Don't worry. We'll be
standing by you."I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane's cheeks.
After two months,we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her.Jane eventually
accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair.Never did she refer to the subject of singing again.I
