On October 27, 2021, my friend and I boarded the first flight of our journey from Vancouver Island, to Peru, South America.
Twenty-four hours and four airports later we landed in Cusco, Peru, a city of one million people. Coming from Vancouver Island with only 100 feet above sea level, we knew that we were now at a much higher altitude (海拔) - over 11,000 feet- and needed time to get used to the scarcer oxygen (缺氧) levels! We followed the advice of other travelers and the locals: drink lots of coca leaf tea and rest for a couple of hours before any activity.
We were soon hiking through the ruins and surrounding ancient castles of Cusco. Leaving Cusco the next day, we stopped at the Moray Ruins, which were used for farming by the Incas. Their size and unique design should be considered a lesson in historical engineering skills. This Inca site is one of the least known tourist destinations, but it’s one of the most interesting places to visit.
Arriving in the beautiful Sacred Valley we stayed at Willka T’ika for the next week. This place is wonderful. We enjoyed delicious vegetarian meals, all made with local produce by loving Quechua people.
You can’t go to Peru without visiting historic Machu Picchu. The “road” up to the ruins is made up of an endless series of switchbacks (急转弯), resulting in cold sweats. It was worth the ride, though.
It was too soon before we were leaving Peru. We learned the unique history of Inca, Quechua culture, and the farming methods still widely practiced. The best thing we took away returning home to Vancouver Island was how simple and caring the people are and how deeply they love the earth and everyone they meet.
4. Why did the author drink lots of coca leaf tea?
A. To have a good rest.
B. To follow the local culture.
C. To feel better at a greater height.
D. To avoid getting thirsty on the way.
5. What does the author think of the Moray Ruins?
A. They’re no longer used for farming.
B. They’re known to most travel lovers.
C. They’re not as interesting as expected.
D. They’re an example of creative engineering.
6. Which can best describe the author’s trip to Machu Picchu?
A. Dangerous and tiring.
B. Risky but worthwhile.
C. Enjoyable and interesting.
D. Comfortable and wonderful.
7. How does the author’s trip to Peru influence him?
A. It encourages him to be more caring.
B. It helps him understand his own culture.
C. It teaches him to accept all the differences.
D. It allows him to experience modern farming.

Nobody likes an old poop (傻子). Developing a sense of humor is part of becoming a mature, emotionally healthy individual. Laughter is good for the soul, which builds friendships and relieves stress. It serves as the glue for social situations and as an ice-breaker for sadness and boredom. If you’ve ever been told to “lighten up” or “chill out”, you should save the blue attitude for serious situations and develop your sense of humor.
Forgive the accidental. A sudden fall is humorous not because we like to see people fall, but because it surprises. From a spilled water glass in a meeting to Aunt Rae’s teeth coming off in the Thanksgiving turkey, the embarrassment of accidents can be relieved by humor and a helping hand. After making sure that nobody’s hurt, forgive accidents with a chuckle (咯咯地笑) rather than a scolding.
Look for the unexpected. The kid who used to look at you with his eyes closed during a test had the idea. Parents who serve green eggs and ham to their children on graduation day get the idea. Unexpected action lighten an atmosphere and relax people.
Learn to laugh with your kids. Most of what children say and do is funny. Help them learn that accidents are sometimes funny and sometimes occasions for joining in and helping another human being. By sharing laughs and attempting to explain humor, you develop your sense of humor, as well as help kids develop their own sense of humor.
8. If you’ve ever been told to “lighten up” or “chill out”, it means ________.
A. you are cheerful B. you are funny
C you are humorous D. you lack humor
9. According to Paragraph 2, when your friend falls, you can ________.
A. chuckle B. scold him C. laugh at him D. feel embarrassed
10. In the author’s opinion, if your mother serves green eggs and ham to you on your graduation day, she is ________.
A. boring B. serious C. humorous D. considerate
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Function of Humor
B. Proper Attitudes towards Humor
C. How to Develop a Sense of Humor
D. Ways to Become a Healthy Individual
D
While often seen as a negative (消极的) emotion, anger can also be a powerful motivator (促进因素) for people to achieve challenging goals in their lives, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
“People often believe that a state of happiness is perfect,” said lead author Heather Lench, PhD, a professor in the department of psychologcal and brain sciences at Texas A & M University, “but previous research suggests that a mix of emotions, including negative emotions like anger, results in good outcomes.”
The functionalist theory of emotion suggests that all emotions, good or bad, are reactions to events within a person’s environment and help that person to make proper actions, according to Lench. For example, sadness may suggest that a person needs to seek help or emotional support, while anger may indicate a person needs to take action to overcome an obstacle (障碍).
To better understand the role of anger in achieving goals, researchers conducted a series of experiments involving more than 1,000 participants and analyzed survey data from more than 1,400 respondents. In each experiment, participants either had an emotional response (such as anger, amusement, desire or sadness) or a neutral (中性的) emotional state, and then were presented with a challenging goal. Across all the experiments, anger improved people’s ability to reach their goals compared with a neutral condition in a variety of challenging situations.
“Our research adds to the growing evidence that a mix of positive and negative emotions promotes well-being, and that using negative emotions as tools can be particularly effective in some situations,” Lench said.
12. What is commonly believed concerning people’s emotions?
A. It is believed that a state of joy is great.
B. A feeling of sadness leads to poor effect.
C. Anger is actually a positive emotion.
D. Pride acts as an obstacle to success.
13. Why did researchers do a seres of experiments?
A. They hoped to overturn the previous findings.
B. They hoped to prove that a state of happiness is ideal.
C. They hoped to find the relationship between positive and negative emotions.
D. They hoped to have a better understanding of the role of anger in attaining goals.
14. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The problem of the research. B. The background of the research.
C. The process of the research. D. The significance of the research.
15. What’s Lench’s attitude to their research?
A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Uncaring. D. Critical.

The best thing we took away returning home to Vancouver Island was how simple and caring the people are and how deeply they love the earth and everyone they meet.

A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Uncaring. D. Critical.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B
