B
Tired of the busy life in Las Vegas, Nevada for nearly ten years, my family and I decided to slow things down. We wanted to lead an environmentally- friendly life. None of us felt this could be accomplished where we were living and we all agreed that a move to the country would be great for everyone.
Before long we set about looking for a home in Yucca, a very small town of less than 100 people, where it is normal to record temperatures above 46°C for days on end in summer and it is very wild with practically no snowfall in winter.
When I called to inquire about the property, I was informed that there was no electricity available in the area. What? No electricity? I almost denied the idea immediately. But what better way is there to go green? After giving it a second thought, we decided to put in an offer and moved in on Thanksgiving Day.
When we first moved to the property, we did some remodeling and stayed in our motor home. We were faced with real challenges at the time. But the frustrations just made us work harder. We slowly got things fixed and moved into the house after 38 days.
While living here for the past four months has been a big adjustment, we benefit a lot from living off grid. I think one of the most educational lessons is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take power for granted. But now they realize the importance of power, together with water and gas. We start taking quicker showers, doing only full loads of laundry, turning off the water while brushing our teeth. And this has a chain effect. We are also trying to make other changes which include reducing the amount of trash we generate by recycling, growing our own organic vegetables and re- purposing things that we would have normally thrown.
Overall, going without electricity has been great for our family. I hope that once my kids move out of the house, they will keep the habits that they have learned here.
24. Why did the family move to the small town?
A. To inspire the kids. B. To try a new lifestyle.
C. To cut living expenses. D. To escape air pollution.
25. What can be learned about the small town?
A. It has an aging population. B. It lacks access to water.
C. It has hot summer days. D. It lacks educational resources.
26. What does the underlined phrase “living off grid” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Dealing with poverty. B. Dealing with garbage.
C. Living without pollution. D. Living without electricity.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A family switching to a simple life. B. A family helping the locals go green.
C. A family traveling around the country. D. A family teaching the kids hands- on skills.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. A

To Karanth, everyone in every part of the world is born with a fundamental connection to nature. Growing up in Karnataka, she began accompanying her father into the wild at just two years old. But in her hometown, kids grew up with a negative perspective on wildlife. Elephants destroyed crops and sometimes people were badly injured or killed. Karanth discovered kids wouldn’t appreciate the fact that it’s the best place to witness extraordinary animals.
In 2017, a conversation with her friend Gabby shifted her mindset towards education. Within half a year, Karanth and Gabby had the first version of “Wild Shaale” on their hands. A program designed for students who come into frequent contact with wildlife, Wild Shaale aims to develop a genuine understanding of wildlife and wild spaces and move beyond wildlife tolerance to concepts of conservation and environmental issues. The conservation education program fills a gap in environmental learning.
While it is fortunate that a basic environmental education is supported by local government, Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality of the curriculum and whether it’s delivered effectively and consistently. “You have to visualize what these schools look like. They may not have electricity — forget having computers, internet, iPads, or anything.”
Encouraging the students to find commonalities between themselves and the animals is the first step to changing perceptions and hopefully, behaviors. “It comes down to the same things: we need food; we need water; we need space. Then they start to understand why situations of conflict arise,” Karanth says. “But then how do you convince them not to get angry, not to act in a way that leads to harm? That’s something we’re trying to work on. It’s not easy.”
28. What problem might Karanth’s hometown have faced?
A. Human-wildlife conflict. B. Loss of wildlife habitats.
C. Overpopulation of elephants. D. Disregard for wildlife balance.
29. Why did Karanth launch the program Wild Shaale?
A. To help students identify animals. B. To fill a gap in local education.
C. To change how students perceive wildlife. D. To publicize wildlife diversity.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The support to the plan. B. The barrier to the program.
C. The curriculum arrangement. D. The schools’conditions.
31. What is Karanth trying to achieve in the program?
A. A shift in humans’ attitudes and behavior. B. A breakthrough in environmental studies.
C. Appropriate ways to end local conflicts. D. Approaches to changing animals’ behavior.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. A

The state of Maine is famous for its delicious wild blueberries. The blueberries grow well on barren mountaintops, in abandoned fields, along rural roadsides or where most other plants don’t. They are also decidedly native as they have been growing in this landscape for more than10,000 years.
At David Dickey’s small farm, farmers harvest blueberries, packing a burst of sweetness into tiny purple package. They’re also harvesting sunshine. A grid (格子) of solar panels stands a few feet above four hectares (10 acres) of the land. The electricity these generate powers a few hundred nearby homes. Under and around these panels are extending fields of the low, thick blueberry bushes.
Solar panels generate electric power without sending out the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that fossil fuels release as they’re burned. Fixing solar panels on farms helps solve another major problem: finding the space to collect enough sunlight to produce enough supply of electricity.
This concept is called “Agrivoltaics”. The word combines “agriculture” with “photovoltaics (光伏)”. Photovoltaic materials — such as solar panels — generate electric current from sunlight.
Growing crops requires hard work — often generating only a low income. A grivoltaic projects can benefit farmers by giving them a second crop: electric power. Also, farmers can pick up some extra cash by renting their land to power companies that will fix their own solar panel son the site.
At the University of Maine in Orono, Dr. Calderwood focuses on finding ways to grow better berries. Her work includes studying how the bushes can be planted to produce delicious berries despite the shade cast by the solar panels at Dickey’s farm.
“Although the idea behind A grivoltaics has been around for decades, it’s really just exploded over the last few years. Around the world, farmers and solar companies are working together to combine farming with the production of electricity,” Calderwood says.
32. How is the second paragraph developed?
A. By giving descriptions. B. By making predictions.
C. By making comparisons. D. By offering suggestions.
33. How do the solar panels make a difference in generating electricity?
A. They take up less space. B. They produce no pollution.
C. They block out direct sunlight. D. They avoid the waste of electricity.
34. What is the main advantage of Agrivoltaic projects?
A. Increased agricultural productivity. B. Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
C. Additional source of income for farmers. D. Promotion of sustainable farming practices.
35. What can we learn about Agrivoltaic projects?
A. They are a creative idea. B. They are in a growing trend.
C. They are only useful to farmers. D. They are a traditional farming.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. B

Exercise needs differ from person to person due to a number of reasons. ___36___
Genetic (基因的) variability
Genes play a very big role in determining a person’s response to exercise. ___37___ Some people may naturally prefer endurance activities (耐力训练), while others may have a genetic make-up that favours strength exercises. Therefore, different genes determine different reactions.
Age
___38___ Children and adolescents may have different needs for growth and development compared to adults or older people focusing on bone density (密度) and functional abilities. When you are at different ages, you have to choose different exercise.
Personal goals
___39___ Most people have their own goals when exercising and the plan they follow needs to meet those goals. Personal preferences also come into play, as some people prefer exercising in a team or class, while others prefer solo workouts.
In between exercise
Activity levels between workouts will also influence a person’s exercise needs and how much they eat. If you’re in an active job, for example, you might not need as much exercise as someone who often sits. Recovery is also important, as this is where the majority of your gains are made. ___40___
Recognizing and accepting these differences is vital for tailoring effective and sustainable exercise programmes that meet a person’s needs.
A. Not everyone wants to get faster or be stronger.
B. There are various ways to meet people’s needs.
C. So what are the factors that contribute to varying needs?
D. Motivation and stress level also affect your recovery often.
E. Exercise requirements change over the course of a person’s life.
F. Everyone has different recovery times, even after doing the same workout.
G. Gene influences factors such as muscle fiber composition and other capacities.

【40题详解】
根据上文“Recovery is also important, as this is where the majority of your gains are made.(恢复也很重要,因为这是你获得大部分收益的地方)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,故承接上文,继续就每个人的运动恢复进行说明。故F选项“每个人都有不同的恢复时间,即使在做了同样的锻炼之后”符合语境,故选F。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we would load our little trucks, drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied. Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany(红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to meet the old lady. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, she could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit—no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through the roof in several places.
Her little granddaughter was about 8, barefoot and wearing a dress made out of cotton bags holding animal feed. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our advertisement.
I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect—she still sent us the same postcard every time we advertised. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, she swore she would never miss a$10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and each time I advertised in that area, the old lady’s postcards would come to me.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day when I was in that area, I made a big decision.

Twenty years later, while sitting at a bar, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One day when I was in the area, I made a big decision. Despite knowing that it was a terrible business decision, I loaded a red mahogany piano onto my little truck. I delivered the piano to the old lady. I placed the new piano in the house, advised her and the little girl to keep the chickens off it and left. I was sure that I had just thrown away a new piano. To my surprise, the payments came in on time with a thank-you note every month.
Twenty years later while sitting at a bar. I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago?” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered., My Lord, it was her, the little barefoot girl in the feed sack dress! I was so glad that my kindness did make a real difference.

A. Dealing with poverty. B. Dealing with garbage.
C. Living without pollution. D. Living without electricity.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A family switching to a simple life. B. A family helping the locals go green.

C Appropriate ways to end local conflicts. D. Approaches to changing animals’ behavior.

34 What is the main advantage of Agrivoltaic projects?

第二节(满分25分)

(1)续写词数应为 150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day when I was in that area I made a big decision.
