A 17-year-old Bangladeshi boy has won this year’s International Children’s Peace Prize for his work to fight cyberbullying(网络欺凌)in his country.
The prize winner, Sadat Rahman, promised to keep fighting online abuse until it no longer exists. “The fight against cyberbullying is like a war, and in this war I am a fearless fighter,” Sadat Rahman said during a ceremony on November 13 in The Hague, the Netherlands. He added, “If everybody keeps supporting me, then together we will win this battle against cyberbullying.”
Rahman developed a mobile phone application that provides education about online bullying and a way to report cases of it. He said he began his work on the project after hearing the story of a 15-year-old girl who took her own life as a result of cyberbullying. “I will not stop until we receive no more cases through the app,” Rahman said at the ceremony.
The award comes with a fund of over $l18, 000, which is invested by the Kids Rights Foundation. The group chooses projects to support causes that are closely linked to the winner’s work.
Past well-known winners of the prize include Pakistani human rights activist(活动家)Malala Yousafzai and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. And the students who organized the March for Our Lives event in 2018 after a deadly mass shooting at their school in the American state of Florida also won the prize.
Yousafzai praised Rahman’s work during the ceremony. She spoke through video conferencing. “All children have the right to be protected from violence(暴力)no matter if it is physical or mental, offline or online,” she said. “Cyberbullying damages that right.”

6. What does the fifth paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The March for Our Lives event. B. Human rights activists in the world.

D. Children are bullied physically and mentally.

Adults with a poor education are also likely to have poor health, a growing body of evidence suggests. Study after study has confirmed the link, and now experts are zeroing in on the reasons for it and what can be done. “Persons with a higher education tend to have better jobs, and better income, better benefits,” said David R. Williams, a professor of public health in America.
Those benefits, he said, go beyond health benefits to include such other factors as having the flexibility to take a day off or part of a day to see a doctor. “People with higher levels of education tend to have more resources to cope with stress and life,” Williams said. They have stress, of course, but also more resources to cope with it — such as access to a health club to exercise away the stress — than people with less education, he said.
“Being better educated also means that a person is more likely to understand the world of modern medicine,” said Erik Angner, an assistant professor of philosophy and economics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who has researched the link between education and happiness. “Modem medicine is incredibly complex. And if you lack the basic reading skills required to function adequately in the health-care environment, you might find it harder to effectively understand your medical care.”
A report issued by Williams’ commission found that, compared with college graduates, adults who did not graduate from high school were 2.5 times as likely to be less than very good health. The report suggested that factors outside the medical system play an important role in determining people’s health. Access to medical care is crucial, but it isn’t enough to improve health. What’s needed, they suggested, is increased focus on schools and education — encouraging people to obtain more education.
8. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Poor Education May Lead to Poor Health
B. Higher Education Can Bring More Income
C Happiness Comes from Good Education
D. Medical Care Safeguards Good Health
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Resources to deal with life.
B. Ways to exercise away stress.
C. Factors concerning a higher education.
D. Benefits related to a higher education.
10. What can we learn from Angner’s words?
A. Better education means understanding the world better.
B. Modem medicine world is too difficult to understand.
C. People with a good education may be happier.
D. Reading skills help in understanding medical care.
11. What is stressed in the report issued by Williams’ commission?
A. Adults are less likely to have good health.
B. The medical system determines people’s health.
C. More education is needed to improve health.
D. More access to medical care is important.

A tiny Alaska village has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.
More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaska village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat (栖息地) of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.
Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in the mid1990s. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight (困境) of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.
The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011, said Jennifer Reed, of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Today we’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year,” Reed said. Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife viewing tours, said he's been offering polar bear tours since 2004. Most of his clients (客户) are from China and Europe, as well as from the lower 48 U. S. states. Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.
12. What causes more polar bears to stay on land in Kaktovik?
A. Food shortage. B. Climate change.
C. Habitats’ movement to shore. D. Their preference for land.
13. How did common people feel about more sight of bears on land?
A. Excited. B. Puzzled. C. Concerned. D. Shocked.
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Hotels in Kaktovik are in demand in autumn. B. Kaktovik has about 50 visitors annually.
C. Inglangasak makes a living as a tour guide. D. Tourism affects the balance of nature.
15. Which saying can describe the text?
A. The fittest can survive. B. After a storm comes a calm.
C. One man’s fault is another man’s lesson. D. Every coin has two sides.

When I was young, Mom liked to make paper animals for me. She folded up the paper, then lifted the paper packet to her mouth and blew into it. There in her hands was a little paper tiger. It seemed that the little tiger shared her breath. This was her magic. At my request, Mom also made a goat, a deer and even a shark.
Mark, one of the neighborhood boys, came over with his Star Wars action figure. I brought out the paper tiger. Mark examined the wrapping-paper pattern of the tiger’s skin. "That doesn’t look like a tiger. Is it a toy? ""I had never thought of that. But looking at it, it was really just a piece of wrapping paper.
Later, Dad bought me a full set of Wars action figures. I packed the paper animals in a shoebox and put them into the comer of the attic(阁楼). Once in a while, I would see Mom at the kitchen table making new paper animals. I caught them, pressed and then put them away in the box in the attic.
Mom was also trying to learn to speak English, but her accent and broken sentences embarrassed me. I tried to correct her. but in vain. Eventually. I stopped talking with her. For years, I paid no attention to Mom until one day my Dad called and told me that Mom was in hospital. Dad and I stood, one on each side of Mom. She turned to me, " Jack, just keep that box with you, and you will find it so important. "
She died several days later. Dad aged raw after that. The house was too big for him and had to be sold. My girlfriend Susan and I went to help him pack and clean the place.
Susan found the shoebox in the attic.

C. Happiness Comes from Good Education

B 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据第二段中“The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat(栖息地) of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.(北极熊群落位于一个温度越来越高的地区,这加速了海冰的移动,而海冰是北极熊的主要栖息地。随着冰逐渐移动到大陆架以外的深水区,更多的熊留在陆地上寻找食物)”可知,全球变暖加速了海冰融化,破坏了北极熊原本的栖息地,越来越多的北极熊待在陆地上以寻找食物。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies.
根据最后一段中“Most tourists visit in the fall(大多数游客在秋天参观)”以及“Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels.(许多游客会在村里呆上几天,村里有两家小旅馆)”可知,大多数游客会选择在秋季去Kaktovik游览,而且很多游客会在这个小村庄待上几天,而这个小村庄只有两个小旅馆,可推知在秋季,Kaktovik的旅馆很抢手。故选A。
再结合最后一段中“The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development. (村名们从旅游业中受益匪浅。反过来,他们用旅游业得来的财政支持为北极熊提供更有效的保护)”可推知,D项 “事物都有两面性”可以描述本文讲述的情况 。故选D。

Mom was born in a small village, which is famous for paper-folding art, and Mom learnt how to make paper animals. In 1967, Mom went to Hong Kong, where she met Dad. They went to the suburbs of Connecticut later. Not knowing English, she was lonely until I was born.

Susan found the shoebox in the attic .It was covered with dust. Susan Cleaned and removed the cover . The paper animals hidden in the darkness of the attic for so long had been dusty and the bright paper patterns had faded. Susan held the paper animals carefully and admired. She was amazed at them , “ I have never seen such creative works .Your mom was an amazing artist.” In my memories the paper animals would jump and run. But now I found they couldn't move. I picked up the paper tiger.
I unfolded the paper tiger and found several lines of Chinese characters written by my mother. But I could not read Chinese. I only recognized the word “son” in Chinese. I knew it was a letter to me written by my mother. I posted the photo of the letter on Facebook in hope that somebody could read it for me .In no time it received some comments ,which said it was life story of my mother . One translated it into English. Reading the letter ,I couldn't help sobbing. Through my misty eyes, I read, “wo ai ni ,baobei.”Which means, “ I love you, my son” . I cried out , “I love you, mom. I miss you , mum.”
