B Kwane Stewart stepped outside a Modesto, California, convenience store with his morning coffee and noticed a homeless man, Tom Bissell, sitting with his back against the building. A small dog sat in his lap. Stewart, a vet (兽医) at an animal hospital, noticed its injured fur and skin. He approached the man and offered to bring medication for the dog's skin, a gift the man readily accepted. “I remember returning a week later, and the hair was coming back the rash (皮疹) was gone,” Stewart told the Modesto Bee. Tom said his dog was finally sleeping at night again because it was no longer feeling restless for its illness. “‘And you know,’ he said, ‘I’m sleeping at night.’ He started to cry, and that got me touched too,” Stewart says. Stewart was addicted. “When you do good deeds, there is something you get in return that feels much larger. I knew I wanted to keep doing it, "he told medium.com. Today, Stewart, 50, has his own practice in town, yet he still finds time for street pets. He's helped roughly 400 animals since 2011. There's a great need for his kind of help. About 25 percent of Modesto's homeless population owns a pet, but there are few healthcare options available to them. To fill that gap, Stewart can often be found wandering dark streets and underpasses (地下通道), anywhere he thinks the homeless might be camped out. Stewart pays for almost all of it out of his own pocket. For those expensive procedures, he set up a GoFundMe account to help cover treatment costs. “I don't ever want to have to turn anybody away,” he explains. “To have somebody like Dr. Stewart come out here to take care of my dog just because it's the right thing to do, that's huge.” Joe, one of the dog owners, said in a video that Stewart posted on the GoFundMe page. 4. How did Kwane Stewart help Tom Bissell's dog? A. By offering mental comfort. B. By providing medical treatment. C. By introducing some famous vets. D. By bringing it to an animal hospital. 5. What directly leads to Kwane Stewart's further kindness? A. The professional habit of a vet. B. The tough situation the homeless faced. C. The requirements from the animal hospital. D. The inspiration from offering help to Tom. 6. Which of the following can best describe Kwane Stewart? A. Rich and caring. B. Smart and humorous. C. Kind and generous. D. Brave and intelligent. 7. What's the text mainly about? A. Vets are in great need. B. Stewart rose to fame overnight. C. Street pets deserve due treatment. D. A vet's kind act brings big impact. C There are millions — possibly billions — of ponds (池塘).Yet for a century or so, they are poorly understood and scientists have paid them very little attention. This neglect (忽视) might not have mattered if it were not for increasing evidence that ponds are extremely important habitats for wildlife. Ponds are being shown more bio-diverse than rivers or lakes. Interestingly, this seems to be partly due to the small size of ponds, which allows them to have a wide range of conditions. The community in a pond with clear water will be very different to that in a nearby seasonal pond made cloudy by farm animals. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams, as flowing water tends to equalize water chemistry. So why have we ignored such a vital part of the natural world? A key reason appears to be the bias (偏见) we humans have where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, scientists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are artificial habitats: we look at the human-made examples around us and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. In our new book Ponds, Pools and Puddles, we show that ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a constant presence. Now, views are taking on new shapes. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a proposal on small wetlands, including ponds, giving crucial recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDER FUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds. In a world where freshwater faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological (生态的) engineering we can easily achieve to help support one of the most threatened bits of the environment. 8. What may contribute to the biodiversity of ponds? A. The nearby animals. B. The constant temperature water. C. Their diverse conditions. D. Their regularly changing conditions. 9. What caused ponds to be neglected? A. People’s love for nature. B. Insufficient ponds for research. C. People’s mistaken belief of ponds. D. Lacking scientific research methods. 10. Why is “PONDERFUL project” mentioned? A. To promote the Ramsar Convention. B. To prepare for the research on ponds C. To highlight the importance of small wetlands. D. To show the changing attitudes towards ponds. 11. What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A. Penny wise pound foolish. B. A small key opens a big door. C. Small streams make great rivers D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. D Everyone knows what makes a good story. Our hero starts their journey as a flawed being. In scene after scene, they face challenges that push them down new paths. By the end of the talc, they overcome setbacks and become a better person in the process. We love these plots in the novels we read but the principles of a good story offer much more than entertainment. Recent research shows that the narratives we tell ourselves about our lives can powerfully help us recover from stress. People who generate tales of struggling and turning over a new leaf from their own lives appear to have much better mental health. Professor Dan McAdams put forward this idea and discovered that whether someone can describe having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of mental health. Another key theme involved is finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events. McAdams invited 14 and 15-year-olds to join in an experiment to write about their experiences of failure and success. Half of them were then given extra instructions to describe the ways they had made their success a reality and how the failure had changed them for the better. Eight weeks later, members of this group reported greater persistence and better grades in their schoolwork. Exciting as these results are some experts sound a few notes of caution. They worry that, hearing about the power of self-narratives, many people may feel they have to find a positive turning point in life. If they can’t, they could end up feeling guilty about having somehow “failed”. Clearly, self-narratives aren’t the panacea. Nevertheless, if you hope for self-improvement, you can use the findings to good effect. By recognizing ourselves as the hero at the center of our own struggles, we can all become the author of our own destiny and change ourselves for the better. 12. What does the research focus on? A. The causes of stress. B. The principles of narrative. C. The connection between struggle and well-being. D. The link between mental health and self-narratives. 13. Why is the experiment mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To give proof. B. To make predictions. C. To draw a conclusion. D. To make comparisons. 14 What does the underlined word “panacea” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Attempt to get rid of worries. B. Means of recognizing yourself. C. Solution to adolescent problems. D. Guarantee to become better people. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Embrace Life Struggles B. Be Your Own Hero C. Ways to Make a Good Story D. The Power of Self-improvement 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有 两项为多余选项。 Are you trying to find ways to be more efficient at your job? (池塘显示出比河流或湖泊更丰富的生物多样性。有趣的是,这似乎部分是由于池塘的规模小,这使得它们有广泛的条件。)”可知,池塘比河流或湖泊有更丰富多样性的部分原因是池塘规模太小,但这种小的规模使得它们拥有有各种各样的条件,由此可知,池塘多样化的条件促成了池塘的生物多样性。故选C项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A key reason appears to be the bias (偏见) we humans have where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important.(一个关键的原因似乎是我们人类的偏见,我们认为如果一件事很小,它就不可能那么重要。)”可知,对池塘忽视的一个原因是我们人类的偏见,认为小的东西不能那么重要,由此可知,是人们的偏见造成了对池塘的忽视。故选C项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Now, views are taking on new shapes.(现在,观点呈现出新的形态。)”可知,人们对池塘的观点和看法发生了转变,此处为本段的主题句,结合下文中的“And the European Union-funded PONDER FUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds. (欧盟资助的PONDER FUL项目正在收集欧洲池塘的数据。)”可知,此处提到了PONDER FUL项目正在收集欧洲池塘的数据,由此可推断,提到PONDER FUL项目是为了表明人们对池塘态度的变化。故选D项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据尾段中的“In a world where freshwater faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological (生态的) engineering we can easily achieve to help support one of the most threatened bits of the environment.(在一个淡水面临巨大挑战的世界里,建造和保护池塘提供了一线希望:我们可以轻松实现的自然生态工程,帮助保护环境中最受威胁的部分之一。)”可知,淡水面临巨大的挑战,可以通过建造和保护池塘提供一线希望,这是一项可以轻松实现的自然生态工程,但却能在保护环境中起到重要的作用,由此可推断,“小钥匙开大门”即“用较小的力量或手段达到较大的效果或目的”的意义与本段的讲述的内容吻合。故选B项。 D Everyone knows what makes a good story. Exciting as these results are, some experts sound a few notes of caution. 14. What does the underlined word “panacea” in the last paragraph refer to? The Power of Self-improvement 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了最近的研究表明,我们对自己生活的描述可以有力地帮助我们从压力中恢复过来。那些讲述自己在生活中挣扎并重新开始的人似乎有更好的心理健康。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Recent research shows that the narratives we tell ourselves about our lives can powerfully help us recover from stress. People who generate tales of struggling and turning over a new leaf from their own lives appear to have much better mental health. Professor Dan McAdams put forward this idea and discovered that whether someone can describe having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of mental health.(最近的研究表明,我们对自己生活的描述可以有力地帮助我们从压力中恢复过来。那些讲述自己在生活中挣扎并重新开始的人似乎有更好的心理健康。丹·麦克亚当斯教授提出了这一观点,并发现一个人是否能描述自己对过去的事情有一定的控制能力,这是一个重要的心理健康预测指标)”可知,研究的重点是心理健康和自我叙述之间的联系。故选D。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“McAdams invited 14 and 15-year-olds to join in an experiment to write about their experiences of failure and success. Half of them were then given extra instructions to describe the ways they had made their success a reality and how the failure had changed them for the better. Eight weeks later, members of this group reported greater persistence and better grades in their schoolwork.(麦克亚当斯邀请了14岁和15岁的孩子参加一个实验,写下他们失败和成功的经历。然后,他们中的一半人被给予额外的指示,描述他们是如何使成功成为现实的,以及失败是如何使他们变得更好的。八周后,这组学生表现出了更强的毅力和更好的学业成绩)”可推知,在第3段中提到这个实验是为了提供证据。故选A。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Exciting as these results are, some experts sound a few notes of caution. They worry that, hearing about the power of self-narratives, many people may feel they have to find a positive turning point in life. If they can’t, they could end up feeling guilty about having somehow “failed”.(尽管这些结果令人兴奋,但一些专家提出了一些警告。他们担心,听到自我叙述的力量,许多人可能会觉得他们必须找到生活中的积极转折点。如果他们做不到,他们可能会因为某种程度上的“失败”而感到内疚)”可知,自我叙述并不能保证就可以成为更好的人。故画线词意思是“保证成为更好的人”。故选D。 15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Nevertheless, if you hope for self-improvement, you can use the findings to good effect. By recognizing ourselves as the hero at the center of our own struggles, we can all become the author of our own destiny and change ourselves for the better.(然而,如果你希望自我改善,你可以利用这些发现来取得好的效果。 Are you trying to find ways to be more efficient at your job?
