I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.
The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.
24. Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden?
A. To protect the injured skull. B. To prevent herself from sunburn.
C. To avoid being hit by the nuts. D. To reduce the chance of getting bitten by bees.
25. What is the tree’s survival strategy?
A. It attracts beneficial pollinators.
B. It lets out poison to drive away pests.
C. It produces a chemical fatal to some plants.
D. It competes for nutrition with similar species.
26. Which of the following DOESN’T account for the author’s love-hate relationship with the tree?
A. The volume of its fruits may bring inconvenience.
B. The tree outcompetes the native plants in the garden.
C. The tree is home to numerous birds and other creatures.
D. The presence of the tree takes up much space of the garden.
27. The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ________.
A. it’s better to give than to take
B. trees and plants have their own ways to flourish
C. even a good relationship is not always trouble-free
D. acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be

With an abundance of sun and wind, Spain is positioning itself as Europe’s future leader in green hydrogen production to clean up heavy industries. But some energy experts express caution because this process relies on massive availability of zero-carbon electricity.
Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs through water, separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules (分子). The process doesn’t produce planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less than 0.1% of global hydrogen production is currently created in this way.
The separated hydrogen can be used in the production of steel, ammonia (氨) and chemical products, all of which require industrial processes that are harder to stop fossil fuels. Hydrogen also can be used as a transportation fuel, which could one day transform the highly polluting shipping and aviation sectors.
Spain’s large, windswept and thinly populated territory receives more than 2,500 hours of sunshine on average per year, providing ideal conditions for wind and solar energy, and therefore green hydrogen production.
“If you look at where hydrogen is going to be produced in Europe in the next million years, it’s in two countries, Spain and Portugal,” said Thierry Lepercq, the founder and president of HyDeal Ambition, an industry platform bringing together 30 companies. “Hydrogen is the new oil.”
Lepercq is working with companies like Spanish gas pipeline corporation Enagas and global steel giant ArcelorMittal to design an end-to-end model for hydrogen production, distribution and supply at a competitive price. Criticism has centered on green hydrogen’s higher cost compared with highly-polluting “gray hydrogen” drawn from natural gas. Lepercq argues that solar energy produced in Spain is priced low enough to compete.
Globally, Lepercq said, “Electricity is 20% of energy consumption. What about the 80% that is not electrified? ... You need to replace those fossil fuels. Not in 50 years’ time. You need to replace them now.”
28. Why are some experts cautious about green hydrogen production in Spain?
A. It needs large amounts of sun and wind. B. It has an effect on heavy industries.
C. It causes conflicts among countries. D. It uses lots of zero-carbon electricity.
29. What is the advantage of green hydrogen production in Spain?
A. Ideal geographical conditions. B. The support from government.
C. Hydrogen production technology. D. Well-developed public transports.
30. What can be inferred about green hydrogen in Spain according to Lepercq?
A. It is highly priced. B. It is easy to store.
C. It is competitive. D. It is highly-polluting.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Spain manages to use zero-carbon electricity. B. Spain struggles to lead EU in heavy industry.
C. Spain takes the lead in preventing air pollution. D. Spain replaces fossil fuel with green hydrogen.
D
Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition(认知)? What about our body? Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere other than our brain? Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition(EC)ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.
If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs – they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats, and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved.
Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test subjects were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too. In another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer.
For further proof, we can look at the metaphors(比喻)that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages.
Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions.
32. According to the author, what is the significance of EC?
A. It brings us closer to the truth in human cognition.
B. It offers a clearer picture of the shape of human brain.
C. It reveals the major role of the mind in human cognition.
D. It facilitates our understanding of the origin of psychology.
33. Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from?
A. Their personal looks. B. Their mental needs.
C. Their inner emotions. D. Their physical feelings.
34. What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 4?
A. Human speech is alive with metaphors.
B. Human senses have effects on thinking.
C. Human language is shaped by visual images.
D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To deepen the readers’ understanding of EC.
B. To encourage the reader to put EC into practice.
C. To guide the reader onto the path to career success.
D. To share with the reader ways to release their emotions.

Summer vacation finally arrived, and with the pressure of exams off my shoulders, I could finally rest. Unfortunately, my daydreaming was interrupted by my mother’s announcement. She and my father had decided to take me to Uncle John’s farm in the countryside. Being born and raised in the city, I had absolutely no clue about farm life. In my mind, I pictured waking up at dawn with cows biting my sleeves (袖子). I begged my parents to let me stay home, but it was no use. They claimed that farm life would teach me far more important things than any book on my shelf, which I thought was nonsense.
Therefore, on a sleepy morning, we packed our suitcases into the car trunk and drove off at daybreak. Even though I was low- spirited throughout the ride, the moment the car entered the farm’s gates, I wondered at the scenery. It looked like an oil painting, with a few cows feeding freely on a pasture (牧场) in the distance. Uncle John and Aunt Alice happily showed us around and introduced us to the animals. Aunt Alice pointed at a sheep that was moving slower than the others and said, “She’s about to give birth. Do you want to see the baby lambs?” I nodded.
That night, after eating dinner around a campfire, we settled into our wooden beds and fell into a sleep. Suddenly, I felt somebody shaking my shoulders. I opened my eyes; it was Aunt Alice! She excitedly told me that the lambs were here. I quickly got up and raced toward the barn (谷仓). There they were! The mother sheep was lying on the straw, and three newborn lambs huddled (蜷缩) next to her, drinking milk. Uncle John was already there, but he looked worried. “What’s wrong?” I asked.“ Look at that little one; it’s not strong enough.” Uncle John pointed at the smallest lamb. It was true; the two other lambs were much bigger and took up all the space. The little one tried its best but still got pushed out. Uncle John said,“ It’s probably not going to survive.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: I knew instantly that I had to help that lamb.

W: Okay, I can afford to take a few days off work. And the pain and neck but.
M: Don’t worry about that. It’s probably because of the stress you’ve been under. You shouldn’t work or use any equipment that requires concentration like computer games. If I were you, I just sleep read a book or watch TV.

W: Oh, I’m reading this really interesting article about a woman called Helen who set up an ECO team.
M: An ECO team? I’ve never heard of that before. What do you mean by that exactly?
W: Well, an ECO team is a group of people who get together to learn about how they can lead more environmentally friendly lives. Now the ECO team is doing things like recycling their household rubbish, so they do things like reusing their old plastic bags when going shopping.
M: Oh, I always reuse mine. I’ve got lots of them at home.
W: Sounds great. Where am I? Oh yes, the team also tries to cycle or walk to the shops instead of going by car. But we both usually walk there don’t we.
M: Well, that’s mainly because the shops are so near the university.
W: Now what was I saying? Oh yes, the team also tries to eat healthy food so they go together to the markets and buy green food. Helen says that there is a link between health and the environment. There’is a farmer’s market once a week on Saturday just outside town. We could take a look this weekend. We could both do with eating a bit more healthily.

【原文】Michael Johnson is one of the most successful professional athletes of all time. He won four Olympic gold medals and a world championship golds. People used to think that it was impossible for the same person to win the two hundred meters and the four hundred meters. But Johnson won both at the nineteen ninety six Atlanta Olympics. Many people think that with better luck Johnson may have won even more medals. He was expected to be part of the team to the nineteen eighty eight Olympics but he had an injury and wasn’t selected. Then in nineteen ninety two he got ill after eating in a restaurant two weeks before the start of the Barcelona Olympics. As a result he didn’t get as far as the final that he had been expected to win. In nineteen ninety six he avoided bad luck and the success story began. Johnson’s success made him rich and famous but he didn’t always seem to enjoy the reputation. He sometimes sounded angry and interviews. After retiring he explained that he’d found the press attention annoying. Johnson of course had a natural talent and great passion for running. But many people say that it was his ability to focus and his devotion to training that made him so exceptional.

D. acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be
【答案】24. C 25. C 26. B 27. D

【答案】28. D 29. A 30. C 31.

【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. B

Picture yourself sitting at home in a quiet reading corner, ignoring the world around you, lost in a tale. You read the brief introduction to a book, instantly become glued and now you’re in the middle of an absolute page-turner. But, there’s a hot debate — physical books VS. e-books VS. audiobooks. ___36___
Generally, reading uses several areas of the brain. There’s attention span, reasoning, reading fluency, memory and language comprehension. Reading is known to strengthen communicative ability, vocabulary and increase emotional intelligence and social perception. ___37___
But, let’s look at the pros to reading with your eyes — physical books and e-books. They can help to retain information better. ___38___ Besides, with physical books and e-books you can go back and find any part you missed, especially if your mind wanders at some point or other.
On the other hand, there’s the audiobook. Headphones in, you’re switched off from life and the story really comes alive, almost like watching a film — in your head. From a scientific perspective, listening to an audiobook is likely to help you develop a greater sense of empathy as you hear the emotion of the narrator. ___39___ Hearing the story engages different parts of the brain, heightening the intensity and imagery, making you enjoy it more.
___40___ Perhaps, next time you find yourself browsing bookshop shelves, also consider the format. It may just change your whole literary experience.
A. You can more easily understand inflection (转调) and tone.
B. So, whichever way you’re reading, there are benefits definitely.
C. Does the device you’re using to read affect your reaction to the book?
D. All in all, it seems that there are advantages to the three types mentioned above.
E. Like e-books, physical books seem emotionless but make you free of distraction.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: I knew instantly that I had to help that lamb.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Soon, it was the end of summer vacation, and we had to go back home.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
I knew instantly that I had to help that lamb. I asked Uncle John if there was anything I could do. He suggested I feed the little lamb some milk directly to give it more strength. With his guidance, I carefully held the bottle to the lamb’s mouth. It eagerly drank, and after awhile, it seemed to gain some vitality. Seeing its feeble attempts to stand become stronger, I felt a sense of accomplishment and warmth spreading inside me. This experience taught me that every life is precious and deserves our care.
Soon, it was the end of summer vacation, and we had to go back home. As I packed my belongings, I couldn’t help but think about the little lamb and how it had grown stronger during my stay. Uncle John informed me that the lamb was now healthy and lively, thanks to our efforts. Saying goodbye to the farm, I realized that this trip had been more than just an escape from books; it had been a lesson in life. I learned about responsibility, compassion, and the beauty of nature. As we drove away, I knew that a part of my heart would always remain on that farm, with the lambs and the memories of a summer that had changed me forever.
