B What Theresa Loe is doing proves that a large farm isn’t a prerequisite for a modern grow-your-own lifestyle. On a mere 1/10 of an acre in Los Angeles Loe and her family grow, can (装罐) and preserve much of the food they consume. Loe is a master food preserver, gardener and canning expert. She also operates a website, where she shares her tips and recipes, with the goal of demonstrating that everyone has the ability to control what’s on their plate. Loe initially went to school to become an engineer, but she quickly learned that her enthusiasm was mainly about growing and preparing her own food. “got into cooking my own food and started growing my own herbs (香草) and foods for that fresh flavor,” she said. Engineer by day, Loe learned cooking at night school. The ultimately purchased a small piece of land with her husband and began growing their own foods. “I teach people how to live farm-fresh without a farm,” Loe said. Through her website Loe emphasizes that “anybody can do this anywhere” Got an apartment with a balcony (阳台)? Plant some herbs. A window? Perfect spot for growing. Start with herbs, she recommends, because “they’re very forgiving.” Just a little of the herbs “can take your regular cooking to a whole new level,” she added. “I think it’s a great place to start.” Then? Try growing something from a seed, she said, like a tomato or some tea. Canning is a natural extension of the planting she does. With every planted food, Loe noted, there’s a moment when it’s bursting with its absolute peak flavor. “I try and keep it in a time capsule in a canning jar,” Loe said. “Canning for me is about knowing what’s in your food, knowing where it comes from.” In addition to being more in touch with the food she’s eating, another joy, comes from passing this knowledge and this desire for good food to her children; “Influencing them and telling them your opinion on not only being careful what we eat but understanding the bigger picture,” she said, “that if we don’t take care of the earth, no one will.” 4. The underlined word “prerequisite” (Para.1) is closest in meaning to “__________”. A. recipe B. replacement C. requirement D. challenge 5. Why does Loe suggest starting with herbs? A. They are used daily. B. They are easy to grow. C. They can grow very tall. D. They can be eaten uncooked. 6. According to Loe, what is the benefit of canning her planted foods? A. It can preserve their best flavor. B. It can promote her online sales C. It can better her cooking skills. D. It can improve their nutrition. 7. What is the “the bigger picture” (Para.6) that Loe wishes her children, to understand. A. The knowledge about good food. B. The way to live a grow-our-own life. C. The joy of getting in touch with foods. D. The responsibility to protect our earth C In the spring, the western tanagers (唐纳雀) prepared to migrate (迁徙) thousands of miles to the forests of the Mountain West, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards. To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers feed on insects and berries. They must take advantage of the early-season boom in insects that started with springtime plant growth to produce healthy young. But as global climate change caused spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers were arriving at their destination after what was known as “green-up”, when flowers began blooming and insects popped up. With the shift of the time when plants put out new leaves, western tanagers became more likely to reach their destinations when food is in shortage or after insect numbers have begun to drop. Scott Loss, a professor at Oklahoma State University and his colleagues used satellite imagery to calculate the average start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, and then compared that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring was indeed beginning earlier along birds’ migration routes. The trend continued this year. The paper continued to build this picture of the inability of birds to track the changing seasons caused by climate change. Timing mismatches between birds and their food could affect whether birds survived the migration and how many chicks they had. Morgan Tingley, a researcher at UCLA said that the migration research could indicate conservation efforts in the future. “Part of it suggested which species were vulnerable (易受伤害的) to various threats,” Tingley said. “This added to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hoped that the information would serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible: “It was really important, if we couldn’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.” 8. During the migration, what will happen to the western tanagers after “green-up” ? A. They will struggle to find enough insects and berries. B. They will have difficulty finding suitable nesting sites. C. They will hardly find blooming flowers for reproduction. D They will find it hard to survive harsher weather conditions. 9. What is the direct result of the timing mismatch between birds and their food? A. The loss of birds’ habitats. B. The decrease of birds’ survival rate. C. The contribution to the greenhouse effect. D. The increase of difficulty in biodiversity conservation. 10. What is Morgan Tingley’s attitude towards the research findings in the last paragraph? A. Uncertain. B. Critical. C. Concerned. D. Indifferent. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. The Diverse Patterns of Bird Migration B. The Timing Mismatch of Western Tanagers C. The Impact of Climate Change on Migratory Birds D. The Vulnerability of Bird Species to Various Threats D Nuclear bombs. That’s the go-to answer for incoming space objects like asteroids (小行星) and comets, as far as Hollywood is concerned. Movies like Deep Impact and Armageddon rely on nuclear weapons, delivered by stars like Bruce Willis, to save the world and deliver the drama. But planetary defense experts say in reality, if astronomers spotted a dangerous incoming space rock, the safest and best answer might be something unnoticeable, like simply pushing it off course by crashing it with a small spacecraft. That’s just what NASA did on Monday evening, when a spacecraft headed direct into an asteroid called Dimorphos, which is around 7 million miles away and poses no threat to Earth. It’s about 525 feet across and orbits another larger asteroid. In images streamed as the impact neared, the egg-shaped asteroid grew in size from a little spot on screen to have its full rocky surface come quickly into focus before the signal went dead as the spacecraft hit right on target. Events happened exactly as engineers had planned, they said, with nothing going wrong. “As far as we can tell, our first planetary defense test was a success,” said Elena Adams, the mission systems engineer, who added that scientists looked on with, “both terror and joy” as the spacecraft neared its final destination. The impact was the peak of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a 7-year and more than $300 million effort which launched a space vehicle in November of 2021 to perform humanity’s first ever test of planetary defense technology. It will be about two months, scientists said, before they will be able to determine if the impact was enough to drive the asteroid slightly off course, probably shortening its, original orbit. NASA plans to launch an asteroid-hunting space telescope named NEO Surveyor in 2026. “We’ve tracked lots of space rocks, especially the larger. ones that could cause extinction-level events. Thankfully, none currently threaten Earth. But many asteroids the size of Dimorphos haven’t yet been discovered, and those could potentially take out a city if they’ came crashing down,” explains Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary. Defense Officer. 12. What’s the function of Paragraph 1? A. It presents author’s main idea. B. It serves as a summary of the essay. C. It introduces the topic of the passage. D. It adds. some background information. 13. How did scientists know the spacecraft hit the asteroid successfully? A. The little spot on the screen suddenly disappeared. B. They recorded the whole process with a telescope. C. The signal from the spacecraft was lost as it hit the target. D. They monitored the spacecraft with satellites in space. 14. What is the purpose of launching the spacecraft? A. To search for evidence of alien life. B. To show engineers’ terror and joy. C. To end the asteroid’s threat to Earth. D. To test technology for defending Earth. 15. Which statement will Lindley Johnson probably agree with? A. NEO Surveyor is aimed to track smaller asteroids. B. NASA’s plan will definitely a success. C. Larger asteroids will no longer threaten Earth. D. Asteroids are equally destructive whatever the size. Compared with the obvious environmental issues we hear about every day, littering (乱丢废物)is often taken lightly. But it’s more severe than we may think. ___16___This seems to be a completely harmless action due to the fact that if s part of a fruit—right? Actually, no. A banana peel (皮)can take up to two years to decompose (分解),and with a third of drivers admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of banana peels, or much worse. An orange peel or a cigarette butt has a similar decomposing term to that of a banana. But tin and aluminium (铝)cans last up to 100 years. ____17____ It’s true that longer-lasting materials will damage the environment and its animals for longer. ____18____ For example, despite its fairly short decomposing term, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is discarded (丢弃)in the UK every day. Besides, our annual littering, which has increased by 500 percent since the 1960s, has caused the UK*s rat population to increase by 60 million. It’s not a cheap habit either: ____19____ So, ifs not surprising that if caught littering you could face a £20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you throw away something dangerous, the court could give you five years to serve. The punishments might seem severe. ____20____ So we still have some way to go in making sure people follow the rules. To take back our beautiful countryside and cities we need to do more than simply not littering. We need to truly care more about the world around us. A. Banana peels are among the most frequent littered stuff. B. But fear of the environmental impact of litter is on the rise. C. Imagine throwing a banana peel out of your car while driving. D. UK taxpayers pay £500 million in order to keep our streets clean. E. And plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles and plastic bags. F. However, among the reported cases only 2,000 out of 825,000 were punished. G. But we can't simply measure the seriousness of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. When Hailey Fort was six, she saw a person standing on the street in her town. With great importance ___37___ (attach) to humans’ future survival, scientists find it necessary to explore an alternative planet to live on. As Stephen Hawking put it, we shouldn’t have all eggs in one basket — or on one planet. He believed humans must move into space so as to survive. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees with the idea ___38___ (total) and holds a firm belief that starting with Mars makes the most sense, thinking sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot about Humans’ ability ___39___ (exist) in a very different environment. However, scientists will need to terraform, meaning changing the conditions on a planet so that it is similar to ___40___ of the earth. One of the main goals is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about 60°C. One idea for warming up Mars is to build factories to produce greenhouse gases. And it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, thus ___41___ (result) in more air that people can breathe. ___42___ scientists greatly expect of Mars is that humans moving to Mars can maintain their health mentally and physically. Christane Heinicke, once living in a Mars-like environment in a test in Hawaii, reported that one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. So humans on Mars would regularly need to keep themselves busy with ___43___ (vary) of activities. One particular organization based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before 2030. According to Elon Musk’s recent plan to populate the red planet, the first Starships to Mars ___44___ (launch) in the next two years, when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens. Its purpose is to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars, which will be uncrewed. Regardless, if ____45____ (prepare), humans settling on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than expected. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第二节:读后续写 (满分25分) 47. Ever since I was little, my favorite season was winter. I loved to play in the snow and enjoyed the hot chocolate. Unfortunately, winter never gave me the special gift of snow on my birthday. The snow disappeared before my birthday and started after it. The seed of receiving that special gift was deeply planted in my heart. As I lived with my grandparents in my girlhood, I would always ask my grandmother why it didn’t snow on my birthday. She would laugh and tell me I asked too many questions, and my grandfather would always smile at me affectionately, sitting beside the stove. But one day, my grandmother promised that she would make it snow when I was enjoying life to the fullest. I thanked her and asked for snow on my next birthday, but my mind was occupied with confusion. “How can you make it snow?” My grandmother didn’t reply but shot me a determined look. It seemed that she had already hatched (策划) a plot. But that year, before my birthday, my grandmother passed away. I was at an emotional loss, but angry because she had promised me to make it snow. The day of my sixth birthday, I woke up and ran to my window, hoping to see just one snowflake. Unfortunately, there was no snow. I cried and cried all day because my grandmother had let me down, but my grandfather said with certainty that my grandmother would keep her word. Before my birthday every year, I would pray but it never came. By my sixteenth birthday, I had lost all hope of getting my snow, even though I still wished for it. During my party, I had the best time ever! I enjoyed the company of my friends and family, and I was truly happy. I was outside with a friend when she asked me if I was having a good time. I told her I was enjoying my life to the fullest. Then I saw the white snow falling all around. I became like a little child on Christmas morning as I ran around screaming and laughing. I was so excited that my friend looked at me as if I were crazy, and laughed at me. She asked me if I had ever seen snow before, and I laughed and said that I had, but that this snow was very special to me. Paragraph 1: Curious about my reply, my friend asked, “Why was this snow so special?” _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Hearing my friend’s advice, I decided to head for my grandfather’s home. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1.C 2.B 3.C 4.B 5.C 6.A 7.C 8.A 9.C 10.A 11.B 12.C 13.A 14.C 15.B 16.A 17.A 18.B 19.C 20.A 1. On a mere 1/10 of an acre in Los Angeles, Loe and her family grow, can (装罐) and preserve much of the food they consume. D. The responsibility to protect our earth 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第一段中“On a mere 1/10 of an acre in Los Angeles, Loe and her family grow, can (装罐) and preserve much of the food they consume.(在洛杉矶仅仅十分之一英亩的土地上,Loe和她的家人种植、装罐和保存了他们所食用的大部分食物)”可知,Theresa Loe一家人在很小的土地上种植和保存了他们所食用的大部分食物,由此可推断出,她所做的事情证明了拥有一个大农场并不是现代自己种植生活方式的“必要条件”。故划线词所在句“What Theresa Loe is doing proves that a large farm isn’t a prerequisite for a modern grow-your-own lifestyle.(Theresa Loe所做的证明了大型农场并不是现代自己种植生活方式的prerequisite)”中prerequisite意为“必要条件,要求”,与requirement意思最为接近。 根据第五段中“With every planted food, Loe noted, there’s a moment when it’s bursting with its absolute peak flavor. “I try and keep it’ in a time capsule in a canning jar,” Loe said. (Loe指出,对于每一种种植的食物,都有一个时刻,它会爆发出它绝对最好的味道。Loe说:“我试着把它保存在一个罐头瓶里的时间胶囊里”)”可知,Loe把她种植的食物装罐是为了保持它们最好的味道。故选A项。 根据最后一段中“Influencing them and telling them your opinion on not only being careful what we eat but understanding the bigger picture,” she said, “that if we don’t take care of the earth, no one will.(“影响他们,告诉他们你的观点,不仅要小心我们吃的东西,而且要了解更大的图景,”她说,“如果我们不照顾好地球,就没有人会这么做了”)”可知,Loe希望她的孩子们理解“更大的图景”指的是我们有责任照顾好地球。故选D项。 C In the spring, the western tanagers (唐纳雀) prepared to migrate (迁徙) thousands of miles to the forests of the Mountain West, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards. D. They will find it hard to survive harsher weather conditions. A. The Diverse Patterns of Bird Migration B The Timing Mismatch of Western Tanagers C. The Impact of Climate Change on Migratory Birds D. The Vulnerability of Bird Species to Various Threats 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. They must take advantage of the early-season boom in insects that started with springtime plant growth to produce healthy young. But as global climate change caused spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers were arriving at their destination after what was known as “green-up”, when flowers began blooming and insects popped up.(为了在漫长的旅途中补充能量,唐纳雀以昆虫和浆果为食。 C。 D Nuclear bombs. 12. C 13. C 14. D 15. 16. C 17. E 18. G 19. D 20. What 43. varieties 44. will be launched 45. prepared 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故填an。 名词ability(能力)后常用不定式作后置定语;ability to do sth. 故填to exist。 故填those。 故填What。 故填will be launched。 在when, while, if, as if, though(或although), as, until, once, whether, unless, where等连词连接的状语从句中,常省略跟主句相同的主语和be动词。 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Peter, I’m Li Hua, the head of our school’s drama club, and now I’m writing to seek your valuable assistance. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Paragraph 1: Curious about my reply, my friend asked, “Why was this snow so special?” I was still bathed in the ecstasy of seeing the snow, without even hearing my friend’s question, just exclaiming out aloud, “Snow! I see it!” It was when my friend tapped on my shoulder that I realized I lost control of myself and was immersed in this blissful world. I explained with my choking words to my friend that my grandmother who had died several years ago kept her word to make it snow when I lived my life to the fullest. Seeing that snow was like seeing my grandmother and her long-awaited gift. At that moment, a surge of nostalgia rushed into my mind and I couldn’t help bursting into tears. My friend, standing beside me, comforted me in her reassuring voice and suggested me going back home to share the delight with my grandfather. Paragraph 2: Hearing my friend’s advice, I decided to head for my grandfather’s home. When I opened the door, what greeted me was my grandfather’s affectionate smile as usual, which deeply tugged at my soft heartstrings. Without thinking twice, I instantly threw my arms around him, poured out my sentiment of missing for my grandmother and shared the pleasure of seeing the snow. My grandfather stroked my head fondly and then withdrew an elaborately-packed gift from the drawer. Inside, nestled in white paper, was a crystal snowflake with a card that read, “Happy Birthday!” Confused, I asked my grandfather how this could be. He explained that it was my grandmother’s final wish to give it to me when I lived my life to the fullest. At that moment, surrounded by the warmth of family and the magic of the falling snow, I realized that while my grandmother may no longer be with us physically, her love and legacy lived on in our hearts, forever etched in the delicate dance of snowflakes. 词汇激活 行为类 ①轻拍:tap/pat ②意识到:realize/perceive ③解释:explain/elucidate 情绪类 ①狂喜:ecstasy/triumph ②眼泪夺眶而出:burst into tears/tears burst out 【点睛】【高分句型1】I explained with my choking words to my friend that my grandmother who had died several years ago kept her word to make it snow when I lived my life to the fullest.( 运用了that引导的宾语从句、who引导的定语从句、when引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】Seeing that snow was like seeing my grandmother and her long-awaited gift.
