He was able to sell millions of cars because he could produce them in large numbers at a time; that is, he made many cars of the same kind. Ford’s father hoped that his son would become a farmer, but the young man did not like the idea and he went to Detroit (底特律) where he worked as a mechanic (机械师). By the age of 29, in 1892, he had built his first car. However, the famous “Model T” did not appear until 1908. Five years ago, Ford started his great motor car factory. This kind of car showed to be well-known that it remained unchanged for twenty year. Since Ford’s time, this way of producing cars in large numbers has become common in industry and has reduced the price of many goods which would be very expensive. 21. Henry Ford was the man to built ________ cars. A. strong and slow B. cheap and long C. fast and expensive D. cheap and strong 22. The young man became a mechanic (机械师), ________. A. which was his father’s will B. which was not his own will C. which was his teacher’s will D. which was against his father’s will 23. The “Model T” was very famous ________. A. before 1908 B. between 1892 and 1908 C. before 1892 D. after 1908 B Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought and flood. Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil—make the rain in—and also bind the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert. 24. The most important points of trees to man is that ________. A. they help him to stop drought and floods B. they help him to make money C. they give him cool D. they give him wood and other things 25. In many places forests slowly disappear because ________ . A. many trees have been cut down by man B. new trees are not well looked after C. man has not paid enough attention to planting trees D. all the above 26. Land becomes desert after all trees are cut down because ________ . A. roots of trees break up the soil B. there are too many rainfalls C. strong winds bring a lot of sand D. there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil. 27. Which title best fits the passage? A. Trees and Man B. The Function of Tree Wood C. How do People do with Trees? D. The Usage of Tree Roots C This is a story I wanted to share just to show how often things happen for a reason. And just by having a short conversation with a stranger can change the course of someone’s day. It brought me to tears and still does. Yesterday my parents were heading off on a little holiday and I took them to the train station. Upon arrival it was pouring rain. I got their luggage out and helped them to the elevator and sent them on their way. As they were entering, an elderly man was exiting. We walked back to the entrance and I commented to him I hoped he had arrangements to get where he needed to go. He was going to wait 30 minutes for the bus. I asked where he was going and it turned out that he was heading to the same town as I was, just a 15-minute drive away. I offered to drive him and he gratefully accepted. We had a lovely chat on the way and I learned some of his history and the fact that he was 87 and heading to the hospital where his only daughter stayed. His daughter had mental disability. A tear fell down his cheek as he told me about her. I managed to hold it together but barely. As I dropped him to the entrance of the hospital, I gave him the bunch of flowers I had in the car which I had given to my mum on Mother’s Day, forgetting she wouldn’t be home to enjoy them. I would much rather see them enjoyed by him and his daughter than take them back home. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he thanked me. As I made my way back to my car, I totally lost control of my emotions and cried like a baby. I was very glad to be able to help him in some way. 28. How did the author help the elderly man? A. By giving him a lift. B. By carrying his luggage. C. By helping him take a taxi. D. By taking him to the station. 29. What was the elderly man going to do? A. Go on a holiday. B. Go back home. C. Buy a bunch of flowers. D. See his daughter with mental disability. 30. Which of the following best describes the author? A. Well-paid. B. Warm-hearted. C. Brave. D. Polite. 31. Why was the author glad to cry? A. His behaviour made a difference to the elderly man. B. He paid a visit to the elderly man’s daughter. C. He ignored his daughter. D. He missed his parents. D Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney’s entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. What makes these places an almost universal attraction? What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks? Well, one reason is the way they’re treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their “guests”, as they prefer to call them, and to see that they enjoy themselves. All new employees, from vice presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions I”. Here, they learn about the company’s history, how it is managed, and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success. After passing “Traditions I”, the employees go on to do more specialized training for their specific jobs. No detail is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires four eight-hour days of training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple, ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take back to the campgrounds? We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to helps our guests enjoy the party.” Even Disney’s managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the mangers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail (单轨车), and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week helps them to see the company’s goals more clearly. All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or the world. As one longtime business observer once said, “How Disney treats people, communicates with them, rewards them, is in my view the very reason for his fifty years of success… I have watched, very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis, successfully. It is what Disney does best.” 32. The first day they come to Disney parks, all new employees ________. A. begin by receiving on-the-job training B. must learn several jobs C. begin as ticket takers D. have started to get specialized training 33. Each year, managers wear special service clothes and work in the park to ________. A. set a good example for employees B. remind themselves of their beginnings at Disney C. gain a better view of the company’s objectives D. replace employees on holiday 34. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Tourists learn the history of Disney in its entertainment parks. B. Disney attracts people almost from all over the world. C. Parades are regularly held in Disney’s entertainment parks. D. Disney’s managers are able to do almost all kinds of work in the Disney parks. 35. This passage is mainly about ________. Whenever I work with my patients on improving their health, we start by asking a simple question, “Who is the most important person in your life?” Many people answer that the most important person is their child, their parent, their husband or wife or others they love. But the real answer is YOU! You are the most important person in your life! Most of us were raised to believe that putting ourselves first is selfish. But the reality is that when we take care of ourselves, we have even more to give to others. When someone says “I don’t have time to take care of myself”, what does that really mean? It means you don’t think your basic needs are worthy of care. The truth is that when you don’t take care of yourself, every part of your body suffers. When you don’t eat right, your cells suffer. When you let stress get to you, your cells suffer. All that damage actually ages you and makes you more likely to suffer from diseases. So what is the first step you should take on your journey to a younger, healthier, and happier you? Make yourself the most important person in your life. A Henry Ford was the first person to build cars which were cheap strong and fast. D. The Usage of Tree Roots 【答案】24. A 25. D 26. D 27. 根据第一段中的“Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought and flood. (树木在三个重要方面对人类有用:它们给人类提供木材和其他有用的东西,给人类提供凉爽的地方,它们有助于阻止干旱和洪水)”和第二段中的“Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. (不幸的是,在世界许多地方,人类还没有发现其中第三点是最重要的)”可知,树木的第三个用途:帮助人类阻止干旱和洪水,是对人类最重要的一点。故选A项。 根据第二段中的“Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear. (人类想从树上赚钱,所以人类大量砍伐树木,结果发现没有它们,人类失去了最好的朋友。此外,人类通常过于粗心,以至于无法种植和照料新树。所以森林慢慢消失了)”可知,在许多地方,森林慢慢消失的原因在于:许多树被人类砍倒了、新树没有得到很好的照料和人类对植树没有给予足够的重视。故选D项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil—make the rain in—and also bind the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert. 故选A项。 C This is a story I wanted to share just to show how often things happen for a reason. 28.
