Are you ready to run now ? Part III Reading Comprehension A The number of jobs for new graduates has shrunk by 8% in a year, suggests a survey of more than 200 top employers. This is a sharp reversal after four years of growth in graduate jobs, says the Association of Graduate Recruiters. Some firms are "repackaging" graduate roles as higher apprenticeships but overall the labour market for young people is shrinking, says the AGR.Brexit is the biggest serious challenge for recruiters, said AGR Chief Executive Stephen Isherwood. The AGR, which represents blue chip companies and major public sector employers, carries out an annual survey of graduate job vacancies among its members. This year the 208 firms which responded to the survey had 19,732 graduate positions to fill - compared with 21,427 last year. Detailed figures show vacancies in construction, retail and engineering have decreased the most: Engineering vacancies for graduates were down 14% from 2,106 in 2015 to 1,820. Retail vacancies fell 16% from 1,975 last year to 1,666 in 2016. Construction vacancies were down 11% from 1,266 last year to 1,121 this year. This year there are more than 10,000 apprenticeships on offer in these companies - a rise 13% on 2015, the AGR calculates, though it also points out that this is still relatively small compared with the drop in graduate vacancies. "The labour market for young people is shrinking for the first time since the financial crisis, but the composition of the market is also changing as employers invest more in school leaver programmes and apprenticeships," said Mr Isherwood. "The uncertainty of Brexit is the single biggest challenge facing recruiters in the year ahead."He added that the apprenticeship levy, which from April 2017 will impose a levy of 0.5% on company payrolls to raise 3billion a year to fund three million apprenticeships, was another significant concern for employers. But, despite the fall in the figures, there are still thousands of vacancies available for university graduates, he said, while "school leavers will find many more different options open to them for high quality jobs". 85. Retail D. Travel 87. What may be the biggest difficulty for the employers in the year ahead? A. The financial crisis. B. The apprenticeship levy C. The uncertainty of Brexit D. The re-composition of the market 88. What is the best title for the text? A. Jobs Market Shrinks for New Graduates. B. Brexit Embarrasses the Graduate Recruiters. C. Apprenticeships Are on the Rise for School Leavers. D. More Options Are Available for University Graduates. She had excellent grades, but she always thought that something was missing. Two weeks before the audition, Roberta’s mother had heard about it and 97 her to join in. “I can’t think of anyone else better suited to 98 the part. Remember all the plays you used to act out for us?” Her mother wouldn’t let the matter drop. “You’re just a little scared. Everyone gets scared. You know you can do it. The trick is to look past the fear to find the love of what you’re doing.’’ So Roberta had made an appointment with the head of the Drama Club. She had read the play and found herself excited by the idea of speaking such rich words. In secret she practiced Portia’s part, 99 the lines by repeating them over and over. Mo Yan, last year’s Nobel Prize winner in literature, believes his success comes from a large amount of reading. Mo was born into a farming family in a village in Shandong Province. He grew up listening to folk (民间的)stories about gods, spirits and foxes. Those stories later became the inspiration (灵感) for Mo’s writing. Mo left school at the age of 12 and started to work in the fields. (2) Although he was tired after his daily hard work, Mo was always hungry for books. However, there were very few in the village. He read his elder brother’s textbooks and even dictionaries. He helped others with farm work in exchange for books. He studied from these writers but did not copy them._(1)_, he _(1)_his own style. “I grew up in an environment filled with folk culture. It enters my novels whenever I pick up a pen. This has affected, even decided, my style,” Mo told a group of reporters in his hometown shortly after he won the award.
