A
Here are four scientific discoveries from this year that could lead to new inventions.
Discovery 1 — To survive in the ocean, some animals essentially hide from the light itself, with transparent bodies that all but disappear from view, but it has one potential risk. The creatures’ eyes reflect light, creating a bit of shine that can give away their location to a predator (捕食者). Some shrimp and prawn larvae, however, have developed a way around this shortcoming. Their eyes are covered with a sheet of special glass that effectively matches their eyeshine to the color of surrounding water. In this way, the tiny crustaceans (甲壳类动物) can become invisible. This discovery might help researchers uncover ways to improve relative technologies in solar panels, remote sensing and communications.
Discovery 2 — Brown bears resist blood clots (血栓) despite their long, inactive periods during their winter sleep. To find out how they do it, scientists tracked down brown bears in Sweden. They discovered one protein showed a significant seasonal change, which could provide ways for preventive treatment in cancer patients and those recovering from surgery, who would be more likely to develop blood clots.
Discovery 3 — A caterpillar venom (毛虫毒液) contains an unusual, shape- shifting protein. When it reaches the outer surface of a cell, this protein forms into a doughnut- like shape, then makes a hole through the cell wall. By researching such nature, engineers could develop medicine delivery strategies that get drugs inside cells where they need to work, which will benefit cancer patients.
Discovery 4 — This year, scientists found two proteins in bowhead whales that could be linked to DNA repair, increasing the animals’ cancer resistance. The proteins called CIRBP and RPA2 were much more common in bowhead whales and played a role in this gene repair. As a scientist says, we probably have the solution to cancer medicine out there in nature already.

Cows love having an open area of grassland. But in some parts of the world, this is only feasible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being kept inside is not always enjoyable for the cows, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cow owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specially. The program simulates (模 拟) grassland in summer and was designed for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cows see red most easily but have a hard time telling the difference between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia — where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
The cow owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the moods of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it helps lift their spirits. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being used around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets were made specifically for the“ structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the animals
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a connection between a cow’s mood and its milk production. They said, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the amount of milk increases greatly.”

6.What’s Izzet Kocak’s possible attitude towards the VR headsets?
A.Satisfied. B.Opposed.
C.Indifferent. D.Concerned.
7.What concept is behind the VR headset program?
A.High tech is necessary in the dairy field.

A global study comparing 2,062 birds finds that in highly variable environments birds tend to have either larger or smaller brains relative to their body size, but birds with smaller brains tend to use ecological strategies that are not available to big-brained ones. The fact is that there are a great many species that do quite well with small brains.
Previous studies had found general trends toward larger relative brain sizes at higher latitudes (纬度) where conditions are more variable. This new study is different because it looks at the full distribution of brain sizes across environments, allowing the researchers to test whether different sizes are over-or under-represented. They found that at higher latitudes, some bird brains are significantly more likely to be relatively smaller compared to body size.
“In Alaska, the ptarmigan (雷鸟) might be a typical example of the small-brained species. Lovable though it is, it’s not exactly known for its smarts. The ptarmigan can, however, feed on branches and willow leaves.” said Trevor Fristoe, first author of the study from Washington University.
“We find that small-brained species in these environments employ strategies that are unachievable with a large brain. These species are able to live on readily available but difficult to digest resources such as needles of conifers (针叶树) or even branches. These foods can be found even during extreme winter conditions, but they are fibrous and require a large gut (肠道) to digest,” Fristoe said.“ Gut tissue, like brain tissue, is energetically demanding, and limited budgets mean that it is challenging to maintain a lot of both.”
“Brains are not evolving separately — they are part of a broader suite of adaptation s that help creatures succeed in their lives,” said Carlos Botero, assistant professor of biology and co- author of the study.“ Biologists, ourselves included, have historically believed that environmental variability drives the expansion of brain size. But when we take a broader view, we realize that other strategies also work and remarkably, the alternative here involves making a brain actually smaller!”
8.How does Fristoe’s research differ from previous studies?
A.It reveals birds’ evolving processes. B.It arrives at a conflicting conclusion.
C.It focuses on birds with smaller brains. D.It covers a wider range of brain sizes.
9.What do we know about the ptarmigan?
A.It has a changeable feeding habit. B.It is considered fairly intelligent.
C.It has an extremely large body size. D.It has a powerful digesting system.
10.What does Botero think of smaller brains?
A.They are a result of limited budgets. B.They are an effective survival strategy.
C.They are not for variable environments. D.They are typical of independent evolution.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Big Brains or Big Guts. Choose One B.Evolution of Brain Size in Birds
C.Big Brains: Adapt to Higher Latitudes D.The Smaller the Brain, the Smarter the Bird
D
Located in the Oaxaca, Mexico, the fishing village Huatulco is home to thousands of baby turtles. I had three open days on my calendar, and a desire to save some turtles. And so, away I went to Huatulco with a powerhouse of willing protectors calling themselves Wildcoast.
To carry out my mission, I was taken to La Escobilla to experience Wildcoast in action. Just one hour north of Huatulco, this protected beach is where mass turtle nesting happens. The natural phenomenon occurs at 12 beaches around the world, three of which are in Mexico. Having just four days during rainy season, thousands of female sea turtles go ashore to lay their eggs.
Between threats like illegal hunters, natural enemies and oil spills, the hatchlings (幼龟) have the whole world against them. As recently as 2012, turtle hunting was not only common practice, but an important part of the culture and diet in the Oaxacan communities.
Wildcoast rescues turtle eggs and recreates habitats. Thanks to their efforts, various sea turtles have made a major comeback, with now over 72 million turtles being born.
I got to hold 50 of the hatchlings in a bowl. Statistically speaking, just one in 1,000 baby turtles will make it to adulthood. Staring at the bowl, I so badly wanted them to find shelter somewhere in the ocean.
Finally, it was time to set free those little ones. Having made sure no suspicious (可疑的) people were nearby, I let out the hatchlings. With each set of waves, we witnessed the survival of the fittest, some crawling (爬行) past the whitewash while others crashed back to shore. A bunch of birds was ready to div e into the sea for their targets.
“One in 1,000.”
Nature was both cruel and sympathetic. After 30 long minutes, the last hatchling made its way to the sea.
12.What is Wildcoast?
A.A lively beach housing various wild animals.
B.An official organization tackling ocean oil leaks.
C.An experienced team exploring the coastal areas.
D.A voluntary group assisting the survival of turtles.
13.Why was the author taken to La Escobilla?
A.To liberate collected hatchlings.
B.To protect dedicate turtle eggs.
C.To witness mass turtle nesting.
D.To record Oaxacan cultures.
14.Which threat does the author want to protect the turtles from?
A.Water pollution. B.Human hunting.
C.Natural enemies. D.Ocean waves.
15.How might the author feel when seeing the hatchlings crawling?
A.Relieved. B.Attached.
C.Concerned. D.Annoyed.

We all know that fish tanks bring comfort and peace for adults—or at least, we are in a better mood after staring at our fish for a while. But what about kids? 16
Taking care of something that depends on them teaches kids responsibility. It helps them realize that what they do is important and that sometimes things need to get done(like feeding the fish)even when they don't feel like doing it. You can have your child help with cleaning the fish tank. 17 A young child could simply watch and hand you the things you need. Kids in grade school could help clean the outside of the fish tank. Teens could help more with the actual cleaning process.
Keeping a fish tank also has a direct effect on kids' mental health. 18 One study has shown that people feel more relaxed and calmer after watching live fish in a tank for five minutes. Interestingly, studies have also shown that watching fish in a tank helps calm kids. So why not bring that experience to your home?
19 One fun part of having a fish tank is choosing from a range of fascinating fish, plants and other decorations. If you can, get kids involved in this process by bringing them along to the fish store with you when you select fish or decorations. You can discuss with your kids about your choices. 20 It might not seem like you're teaching anything—but through these conversations, kids are learning to think creatively. They learn how to select fish for a community tank instead of just picking out a fish because "It's pretty!"
A.Let your kid helpers give their input, too!
B.To add to the benefits, it inspires creativity.
C.Keeping a fish tank brings lots of fun to kids.
D.Are kids able to take good care of a fish tank?
E.Give them responsibilities that make sense for their age.
F.Good news is that owning a fish tank for them has many benefits.
G.If you feel better after watching fish, it's not just your imagination!

Last summer, I traveled to Rockville, Maryland, to visit my parents. The trip was special because I had brought along my ten-year-old dog Dakota, who had been part of my family since he was a puppy. My parents had not seen him since I moved to California two years ago, and they were excited about seeing him again.
On the way back, my brother dropped Dakota and me at the airport. After checking in, I stayed with Dakota until an airport worker came to get him. Seeing him off, I headed to the gate and boarded the plane.
About two hours into the flight, the captain came up to me. He told me that he had received a call from the airport worker who said that Dakota had been carelessly loaded in the wrong cargo hold (货舱). He went on to explain that the plane was divided into two cargo holds — forward and rear. The rear cargo hold was designed as animal cargo, as it was lighted, pressurized and heated, while the forward cargo was not designed or used for animal cargo. He said Dakota had been misplaced in the forward cargo hold, and since it was not properly heated, he could not be sure that Dakota was okay, especially in the freezing temperatures at thirty thousand feet.
I couldn’t believe what he was telling me. I turned white as a ghost as my eyes watered with tears. The captain then told me that he was going to make an unscheduled landing in Denver. Again he said that he did not know if Dakota was still alive. Even though I was very upset, I was grateful that the captain was going to stop in Denver. He went on to explain that once we landed, I could go with him to check if Dakota was alright.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Unfortunately for Dakota and me, we had another hour to go before we could land in Denver.

根据Discovery 1第一句“To survive in the ocean, some animals essentially hide from the light itself, with transparent bodies that all but disappear from view, but it has one potential risk.”(为了在海洋中生存,一些动物本质上是在躲避光线,它们透明的身体几乎从视野中消失了,但这有一个潜在的风险。)和倒数第二句“In this way, the tiny crustaceans(甲壳类动物)can become invisible.”(通过这种方式,微小的甲壳类动物可以隐形。)
根据Discovery 3中的“By researching such nature, engineers could develop medicine delivery strategies that get drugs inside cells where they need to work, which will benefit cancer patients.”(通过研究这种性质,工程师们可以开发出药物输送策略,使药物进入细胞中需要发挥作用的地方,这将有利于癌症患者。)
根据第一段“Here are four scientific discoveries from this year that could lead to new inventions.(以下是今年的四项科学发现,它们可能会带来新的发明。)” 故选A项。
4.B 5.B 6.A 7.D
根据第一段中“In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth.(在冬季,天气可能会变得太冷,以至于奶牛无法安全地待在室外,因此它们会被安置在大型的农场建筑内以保暖)”可知,在某些地方只有夏天才能为牛提供开阔的草地区域,即这种做法只有在夏天才可能实现。
根据第三段“Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia —— where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.(来自俄罗斯莫斯科一个农场的报告——那里最初是由兽医开发出VR头盔的——在2019年发现,使用VR头盔的奶牛焦虑减少,情绪得到改善。这导致了牛奶产量的增加,从每天5.8加仑增加到了7加仑)”可知,佩戴VR头盔的结果是奶牛的产奶量相应地增加了。故选B。
6.推理判断题。根据第四段中“When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the moods of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it helps lift their spirits. They are less stressed,” he said.(当Kocak给他的奶牛戴上VR头盔时,他发现他的奶牛情绪有所改善。“它们看到一片草地,这有助于让它们的心情变好。它们的压力减少了,”他说)”可知,他对VR头盔的效果感到满意。故选A。
根据最后一段“Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a connection between a cow’s mood and its milk production. They said, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the amount of milk increases greatly.”(俄罗斯联邦农业部表示,研究表明奶牛的情绪与其牛奶产量之间存在联系。他们说,“不同国家的奶牛农场的例子表明,在平静的环境中,牛奶的产量会大大增加。”)”可知,奶牛的情绪与牛奶产量之间存在联系,再结合全文内容,可以推断出VR眼镜程序背后的概念是奶牛情绪良好时能够产生更多的牛奶。故选D。
8.D 9.C 10.A 11.A

根据第二段“They found that at higher latitudes, some bird brains are significantly more likely to be relatively smaller compared to body size.(他们发现,在高纬度地区,一些鸟类的大脑相对于身体来说更有可能相对较小)”以及第三段“In Alaska, the ptarmigan (雷鸟) might be a typical example of the small-brained species.(在阿拉斯加,雷鸟可能是小脑袋物种的典型例子)”可推知,雷鸟的体型非常大。故选C。
根据最后一段“But when we take a broader view, we realize that other strategies also work and remarkably, the alternative here involves making a brain actually smaller!(但当我们从更广阔的角度来看,我们意识到其他策略也起作用,值得注意的是,这里的替代方案涉及到让大脑变得更小!)” 故选A。
根据第一段“A global study comparing 2,062 birds finds that in highly variable environments birds tend to have either larger or smaller brains relative to their body size, but birds with smaller brains tend to use ecological strategies that are not available to big-brained ones. The fact is that there are a great many species that do quite well with small brains.(一项对2062只鸟类进行比较的全球研究发现,在高度多变的环境中,鸟类的大脑相对于它们的身体大小往往更大或更小,但大脑较小的鸟类往往会使用大脑大的鸟类无法使用的生态策略。事实上,有很多物种的大脑都很小)”结合文章主要介绍了关于鸟类大脑大小和智慧之间关系的研究,列举了研究人员对研究结果的看法。可知,A选项“脑大还是智慧大。选择一个”最符合文章标题。故选A。

根据文章第二段“To carry out my mission, I was taken to La Escobilla to experience Wildcoast in action. Just one hour north of Huatulco, this protected beach is where mass turtle nesting happens(为了执行我的任务,我被带到La Escobilla去体验Wildcoast的实际行动。这个受保护的海滩位于Huatulco以北仅一小时的地方,是大量海龟筑巢的地方)”可知,作者被带到La Escobilla是为了见证大量的海龟筑巢。故选C项。
14.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Between threats like illegal hunters, natural enemies and oil spills, the hatchlings(幼龟) have the whole world against them(在面对非法猎人、自然敌人和石油泄漏等威胁时,这些幼龟面临着整个世界的反对)”可知,海龟幼崽面临的威胁包括非法猎人。
根据文章最后一段“With each set of waves, we witnessed the survival of the fittest, some crawling(爬行) past the whitewash while others crashed back to shore. A bunch of birds was ready to dive into the sea for their targets(每组波浪中,我们都见证了适者生存,一些生物爬行穿过白浪,而另一些则被冲回岸边。一群鸟准备潜入海中捕捉目标)”可知,作者在看到幼龟爬行时可能会感到关切,担心它们的生存。故选C项。

But what about kids?(我们都知道鱼缸给成年人带来了舒适和安宁——或者至少,我们盯着我们的鱼看了一会儿后心情会好一些。 F项“Good news is that owning a fish tank for them has many benefits.(好消息是,对他们来说,拥有一个鱼缸有很多好处。)”
17.根据该段的主题句“Taking care of something that depends on them teaches kids responsibility.(照顾好依赖于自己的东西会教会孩子们责任感。)”和空格前的句子“You can have your child help with cleaning the fish tank.(你可以让你的孩子帮忙清洗鱼缸。)”以及空格后的句子“A young child could simply watch and hand you the things you need. Kids in grade school could help clean the outside of the fish tank. Teens could help more with the actual cleaning process.(一个小孩子可以简单地看着你,然后把你需要的东西递给你。小学生可以帮忙清理鱼缸的外面。青少年可以在实际的清洁过程中提供更多帮助。)”可知,空格处的句子应该和给孩子们责任有关,所以,E项“Give them responsibilities that make sense for their age.(给他们一些适合他们年龄的责任。 )”填入空格处,符合语境。故选E项。
18.根据空格前的句子“Keeping a fish tank also has a direct effect on kids' mental health.(养一个鱼缸对孩子的心理健康也有直接的影响。)”和空格后的句子“One study has shown that people feel more relaxed and calmer after watching live fish in a tank for five minutes. 19.空格处是该段的主题句,根据下文的内容“One fun part of having a fish tank is choosing from a range of fascinating fish, plants and other decorations. If you can, get kids involved in this process by bringing them along to the fish store with you when you select fish or decorations. You can discuss with your kids about your choices.(拥有一个鱼缸的一个有趣的部分是从一系列迷人的鱼,植物和其他装饰品中选择。如果可以的话,让孩子们参与到这个过程中来,当你选择鱼或装饰品的时候,带他们一起去鱼店。你可以和你的孩子讨论你的选择。)”可知,此处是说,应该让孩子参与选择鱼或者装饰品的过程,所以,A项“Let your kid helpers give their input, too!(让你的孩子帮手也提供他们的意见!)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选A项。
20.根据空格后的句子“It might not seem like you're teaching anything—but through these conversations, kids are learning to think creatively.(这看起来好像你没有教什么,但是通过这些对话,孩子们正在学习创造性地思考。)”可知,空格处的句子应该涉及到“养鱼有助于培养孩子的创造性”,所以,B项“To add to the benefits, it inspires creativity.(除此之外,它还能激发创造力。)”

If anyone could survive, it would be him. The more I pondered Dakota’s fate, the more hopeful I became that he was still alive and would pull through.
When we landed in Denver, I could hear the ground crew opening the cargo hold door. Without wasting a moment, I unbuckled my seat belt, exited the plane, and hurried down the stairs. My heart raced with excitement. Then, the ground crew signaled me with a thumbs-up: I hadn’t lost my beloved companion! Approaching the pet carrier, I could see Dakota trembling inside. Immediately, I unlocked the door and cradled him in my arms. My loyal Dakota was alive and safe in my embrace!
