You are in: North Yorkshire > Places > Great Yorkshire Show > Wall to wall
Wall to Wall
A dry stone wall is a remarkable achievement of engineering! The Yorkshire Dry Stone Walling Guild will be demonstrating the craft at this year's Great Yorkshire Show. Find out about the eye-catching structures.
Winding their way across some of Britain's most beautiful landscapes. for many hundreds of years, dry stone walls remain a typical and much-loved feature of the Yorkshire countryside. The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are no exception.
Dry stone walling is an old craft which marks the boundaries between fields and parcels of land. The walls are built without using any cement (水泥) jointing and the walls fit in with the surroundings, providing shelter and habitat for a wide range of animals and insects. They can last for more than a lifetime and need repairing and preserving. However, far from dying out, the craft is alive and kicking all over the county.
The Yorkshire Dry Stone Walling Guild (YDSWG) was founded 20 years or so ago and is dedicated to the craft. It is a voluntary, non-profit-making organisation with around 130 members. Its aim is to preserve the walls and the skills involved in building and maintaining them. It also encourages an interest in the history of dry stone walls.
Brian Wood, secretary of the YDSWG, told us about their involvement with the Great Yorkshire Show.
“Last year we finished a wall we were building around the pond near the showground's Brown Gate. The Guild hopes to build more walls and we look forward to meeting all our enthusiasts again. Hope you will lay a stone or two as you have done in the past.”
1. What do we know about dry stone walls?
A. They are newly discovered. B. They hold no more appeal to the public.
C. They now face extinction. D. They are harmonious with the environment.
2. What is the Yorkshire Dry Stone Walling Guild aimed at?
A. Training craftsmen. B. Preserving the tradition.
C. Promoting tourism. D. Enrolling volunteers

The language of Gaelic has been spoken in Scotland since at least the 10th century and was at one time the country’s main language, widespread in towns and cities across the nation. Since the union of Scotland and England in the early 18th century, though, it has been in decline. These days you are most likely to find native Gaelic speakers in the Highlands of Scotland, with concerns having been raised about the future of the language.
Now, a new initiative from Community cafe and Gaelic cultural centre seeks to turn the tide with the release of the first Gaelic edition of the board game Scrabble.
Titled Scrabble Gàidhlig, it contains only the 18 letters found in the Gaelic alphabet and includes the grave accent on vowels À È Ì Ò and Ù. The frequency with which each letter appears has been reconsidered to reflect its usage in Gaelic, and scoring has been reformulated (重新设定) to reflect the respective ease and difficulty of using different letters in the language.
“We worked closely on the development of the new game with the team at An Taigh Cèilidh, who have done a fantastic job of localizing the material and ensuring that the game plays really well,” said CEO Jim Harrison. “I hope everyone enjoys playing it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
“It will help people improve their oral skills and the range of their vocabulary in Gaelic,” said McLeod, professor of Gaelic at the University of Edinburgh. “In particular, many Gaelic speakers are not very confident with their written Gaelic and Gaelic Scrabble could give them a valuable boost. It will be very helpful for Gaelic learners too. Gaelic spelling is very logical once you are familiar with the system, but it does take time to master it.”
Scrabble was invented in 1948 and has been common in UK homes ever since, with about half of all households owning at least one set. It is sold in more than 120 countries and available in 28 languages and counting.
4. Why was Scrabble Gàidhlig invented?
A To help keep a declining language alive. B. To add a new type to board games.
C. To help reunite the two countries. D. To promote a language game.
5. What is discussed about Scrabble Gàidhlig in paragraph 3?
A. Its origin. B. Its feature. C. Its advantage. D. Its function.
6. How will Scrabble Gàidhlig benefit its users according to Prof McLeod?
A. It will improve their language competence. B. It will boost their confidence in socializing.
C. It will raise their interest in the board game. D. It will enhance their hands-on ability.
7. What is the last paragraph intended to do?
A. Add some background information. B. Make some further predictions.
C. Raise a reasonable doubt. D. Introduce a global trend.

You are what you think. Whatever you are doing right now is determined by your thinking. All your emotions and desires are influenced by your thinking. The problem is that when you are not aware of your thinking, you have no chance of correcting it if it is poor. When thinking is subconscious, you are in no position to see any problems in it. And, if you don’t see any problems in it, you won’t be motivated to change it. What’s worse, few people realize the powerful role that thinking plays in their lives, so they don’t gain significant command of it. As a result, most people are in many ways victims of their thinking.
Consider your success as a student. The single most significant variable in determining your success as a student is the quality of your thinking. Your instructors will play a role in your learning, but even the best teachers cannot get into your head and learn for you. If you lack the intellectual skills necessary for thinking well through course content, you will not be successful in school.
Here is the key question we are putting to you in this book. If the quality of a person’s thinking is the single most significant determinant of both happiness and success, why not take the time to learn from the best thinkers?
This book will inform you of the tools that the best thinkers use and will illustrate the activities and practice you can use to begin to emulate them, and take control of your destiny as a thinker. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of these thinking aids, helping you discover the power of your own mind and of your potential to think systematically about your thinking.
This book, as a whole, introduces you to the tools of mind that will help you reason well through various challenges you face. If you take these ideas seriously and practice using them, you can improve the quality of your thinking and ultimately, the quality of your life.
8. Why do many people lack motivation to change their poor thinking?
A. They are victims of emotions. B. They are unaware of the need.
C. They think highly of themselves. D. They lack the academic guidance.
9. What plays the most crucial role in school success?
A The course content. B. The school environment.
C. The commitment of teachers. D. The quality of an individual’s thinking.
10. What does the underlined word “emulate” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Make friends with. B. Win over. C. Follow the example of. D. Look up to.
11 The book is organized according to ________.
A. types of life challenges B. varieties of thinking tools
C. determinants of life value D. ideas of different thinkers
D
Astronomers have examined the stars that a new space telescope might target, to prepare for one of the most advanced searches for life on other planets. They found out which star systems might be more suitable to hunt for potential life.
In the 2040s, NASA plans to launch the Habitable Worlds Observatory(HWO). Its big goal is to image about 25 Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of sun-like stars-where water and even life could exist. Before building the HWO, scientists are working on significant challenges it will face.
One of those is choosing stars within around 100 light years from Earth that the telescope might target. Caleb Harada at the University of California, Berkeley, and his team analyzed 164 potential stars to determine their characteristics. These stars could become some of the most studied stars ever.
Harada and his team discovered that 102 of the stars are binaries(双子星), which could make the search for life more complex. The HWO telescope will use a tool to block out the stars’ light to attempt to image planets in orbit and study the gases in their atmospheres. “If binaries are too close together, the light from the unblocked star will be so bright that it’ll cover up the planets and make them hard to see,” explains Bruce Macintosh from the University of California Observatories.
Out of all the stars, 33 have dust rings that could make it hard to see planets clearly. “This makes exploring harder,” says Harada. “Some stars also sometimes burst into bright flames, like our sun’s flares, which aren’t always deadly. But we need to check closely that they’re not too strong, because these can affect life and living conditions,” explains Harada.
12. Why is HWO to be built?
A. To take pictures of planets. B. To find out habitable planets.
C. To identify Earth-like planets. D. To prepare for the search for life.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The application of the telescope. B. The characteristics of studied stars.
C. The analysis of potential sun-like stars. D. The challenge of finding the right stars.
14. What challenges planet detection around binary stars?
A. The HWO telescope. B. Tightly spaced binary stars.
C. The brightness of unblocked stars. D. The gases in planets’ atmospheres.
15. What factor might prevent the formation of life according to the last paragraph?
A. Space exploration. B. Stars’ intense bursts.
C. Frequent solar flares. D. Dust rings on planets.

In Chinese traditional architecture, a skywell is an open courtyard or well-like space usually located at the heart of a building or group of buildings.____16____ Their designs often feature the classic Chinese dou gong overhangs to provide shade and collect water into a central basin.
Chinese skywells are so effective in cooling homes because they can control natural airing. Cool air is drawn into the building from the lower levels, and warm air escapes and rises through the upper levels. ____17____
The skywell’s layout and construction materials also help in thermal(热量的)regulation. During the day, the courtyard absorbs heat from the sun, acting as a thermal mass.____18____This day-night cycle helps maintain a balanced and consistent temperature indoors.
Most traditional skywells include water features, such as fountains or ponds. A recent study has shown that the most significant part of a skywell’s cooling effect comes from these water bodies.____19____As water evaporates(蒸发)from these features, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air. This reduces the temperature within the courtyard and surrounding rooms.
____20____One fitting example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology Research Centre in Jinan,an 18-story building that has a giant open space at its heart from the fifth floor to the top floor. The toilets, elevators, and meeting rooms surround this space. This enhances natural airing and natural energy consumption, according to the Shanghai-based CCDI Group.
A. This promotes fresh air flow, especially during hot summer days.
B. It is often a square surrounded by the building’s rooms and wings.
C. This cooling was disadvantageous in regions with hot and dry climates.
D. It’s probably why temperatures around them are 2.6℃ to 4.2℃ lower.
E. These wonders continue to inspire architects to seek sustainable solutions.
F. The magic of skywells stands as witnesses to the wisdom of ancient builders.
G. The stored heat is gradually released as the outdoor temperature drops at night.

A Birthday Surprise
I stood at the kitchen window watching Papa as he sat in the old, wooden lawn chair staring out at the lake. Ralph, his old black dog, lay on the ground at his side. Papa’s hand absently stroked (抚摩) the head of his old companion as they dreamed the dreams of old men and old dogs in the evening sun. “He does this day after day?” I asked Mama.
She nodded, sadness filling her eyes. “I don’t know what to do for him. There is a strong desire in his eyes that I can’t satisfy -a desire for the past. The past can’t be brought back to the present. Once days are gone, they are gone forever,” Mama sighed.
“I’m going down to talk to him,” I said.
I called out to Papa and handed him a cup of coffee. “What are you and Ralph thinking about all these hours you spend out here?” I asked,
“We’re not thinking,” he said softly. “We’re wishing.” I sat on the grass beside his chair. “Wishing for what?” “For the impossible, I suppose,” he sighed. “You always told me that nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly enough and were willing to work hard for it,” I reminded him.
He laughed softly, but there was no amusement in the sound. “But Ralph and I have come to learn that when you reach our age, some things are actually impossible.” “Maybe I can help you. What do you want so badly?” I asked.
Papa grinned (咧嘴大笑), and his eyes shone brightly at the thought of his dream becoming a reality. “Ralph and I want to fix up the old boat and go out on the lake again. We used to spend all day out on the lake, fishing, drinking beer and eating sandwiches,” Papa said.
Yes, I remember. When I was young, Papa and Ralph often enjoyed themselves on the lake on weekends. They’d start for home when the sun went down, totally satisfied with themselves and with life. Now, Papa was almost eighty-five years old and had a heart condition, so Mama was horrified by the idea of him going out on the lake again at first. But eventually I managed to convince her.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan.

A. To help keep a declining language alive.

A. The course content. B. The school environment.
C. The commitment of teachers. D. The quality of an individual’s thinking.
10. What does the underlined word “emulate” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Make friends with. B. Win over. C. Follow the example of. D. Look up to.
11. The book is organized according to ________.
A. types of life challenges B. varieties of thinking tools
C. determinants of life value D. ideas of different thinkers

C The analysis of potential sun-like stars.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. B

Most traditional skywells include water features such as fountains or ponds.

【答案】One possible version
After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan. I decided to fix up the old boat. The boat didn’t fall apart, and the paint had faded and cracked. We spent several weekends repairing and painting the boat. I replaced the faded and cracked seat cushions while my friends repaired the motor. We expected Papa to be proud of the boat a s he and Ralph went out on the lake again. Tired as we were, we were happy to complete the restoration. I wouldn’t let off the secret until Papa’s birthday.
Then came the day and we were all eager to give him a surprise. He could hardly believe his eyes when we showed him the new boat. Then we said “Happy birthday” to him in chorus, and he was so touched that tears blurred his eyes. After that, we put sandwiches and dog biscuits on it while Mama also bought Papa a new hat. Soon, we all stood by the lake and watched as Papa and Ralph sailed away, Papa waving and laughing. Seeing him so happy, I felt that everything I did for him was rewarding.
