Thomas Edison was an American inventor. When he was 7 years old, his mother had an appendectomy (阑尾切除手术). But it was too dark. So Edison put mirrors near oil lamps to light up the room.
The story is in a Chinese textbook for primary school students by People’s Education Press (人民教育出版社). But the publisher (出版社) recently said it will cut out this story. That’s because many people think it’s not true. Many believe that the world’s first appendectomy was in 1886. But when Edison was 7, it was 1854.
The publisher also said it will not use some other stories. For example, there’s a story about the first US President George Washington. The story says young Washington cut down a cherry tree in the yard of his house. But in fact, there was no cherry tree in the area at that time.
So what’s the problem? Experts say that some editors care too much about the educational (教育的) meaning of a story and fail to check first if the story is true.
The publisher says, in the future, they will pay greater attention to the truth of the stories in the textbook. “We will invite experts to check our stories,” it said in a statement.

D. Editors should pay attention to the educational meaning of the stories.
3. If we put the passage into several parts, which of the following is the best?
(①=Para. (段落)1 ②=Para. 2 ③=Para. 3 ④=Para. 4 ⑤=Para. 5)
A. ①; ②③④;⑤ B. ①②;③④;⑤
C. ①;②③;④;⑤ D. ①②③;④;⑤
4. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. Textbooks to cut out fake (假的) stories B. Educational stories in textbooks

As health is the fortune for people, enough exercise is necessary for everyone. However, it seems that people across the world need to get moving, according to a new study by the World Health Organization (WHO).
About 25 percent of adults (成年人) do not get enough exercise, according to the study. This figure (数字) hasn’t changed from 2001. Because of this, about 1.4 billion people are at greater risk (风险) for deadly diseases (疾病) such as heart disease and cancer.
People should do at least 150 minutes of “moderate intensity (中等强度)” exercise each week, such as dancing or swimming. They can also do 75 minutes of “vigorous intensity (高强度)” activity, such as running or playing soccer, according to the WHO.
As for how to exercise more, experts suggest we don’t have to go to the gym every time, the Guardian noted. For example, we can go up and down stairs a lot instead of taking the lift. If we don’t feel we can go to a dancing class each week, standing on one leg for 30 seconds a day is very good, too.
▲ It showed that 32 percent of women failed to exercise enough, compared to 23 percent of men. Women tend to spend more time at home taking care of children and doing housework, Time magazine noted.
Countries with higher incomes showed higher rates of inactivity. For example, people in Kuwait and the United States exercise less than people in Uganda and Nepal. This is partly because in developed areas, desk jobs have taken the place of manual labor (体力劳动).
5. What can we know from the second paragraph?
A. 25% of people all over the world don’t get enough exercise.
B. More and more people die from heart disease and cancer.
C. More and more people are easily ill as they get older and older..
D. Less exercise makes many people at greater risk for deadly diseases.
6. What is the topic sentence of the fifth paragraph?
A. The study showed that women are more vulnerable (脆弱的) than men.
B. The study suggested both men and women find it important to exercise.
C. The study inferred that men need more exercise than women every day.
D. The study also found that women are less active than men in exercise.
7. What does the underline word inactivity mean?
A. 积极 B. 有激情 C. 不积极 D. 呆板
8. According to the passage, which sentence is NOT true?
A. The writer believes exercise is very important for everyone
B. Generally, men spend more time on exercise than women.
C. Dancing, swimming and running have the same intensity.
D. The writer talks about the results of the study objectively (客观地).
C
You might feel full after having a big meal. But you may actually suffer from “hidden hunger”. This means that the food you eat is not giving you the nutrition (营养) that your body needs. This happens when food lacks (缺乏) the vitamins and minerals (矿物质) , proteins and other elements people need to stay healthy.
At present, “hidden hunger” affects 2 billion people worldwide, including 300 million people in China. It is most commonly seen among children and teenagers. And it can result in heart disease, blindness or even death.
Many Chinese people don’t get enough iron, calcium (钙), vitamin A and vitamin D. One main reason is that agricultural products (农产品) don’t have much of these nutrients. Over 40 percent of China’s farmland is losing its vitamins and minerals, so the crops that grow on it have less nutrition.
Many of the processed (加工的) foods that people enjoy eating today, such as burgers and cookies, have made the situation worse. Vitamins and minerals are easily lost when these foods are processed.
In response, China’s government has made several action plans to improve public health, as well as develop nutritious foods.
Eating more fresh nutrition-rich food like vegetables, whole grains (全麦) and milk can help us stay healthy. For vegetables like carrots, boiling and steaming can better keep their nutrition when compared to frying them.
9. According to the passage, what is “hidden hunger”?
A. The food you eat doesn’t make you feel full after a big meal.
B. The food you eat doesn’t provide you with the nutrition you need.
C. The food only lacks the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy.
D. The food you eat can result in heart disease, blindness or death.
10. The following food can help people stay healthy EXCEPT _______.
A. milk B. whole grains C. burgers D. vegetables
11. The main idea of paragraph 3 is _______.
A. that “hidden hunger” can result in heart disease, blindness or death
B. what China’s government has done to change the problem
C. why Chinese people lack some vitamins and minerals
D. that some of China’s farmland is losing vitamins and minerals
12. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Children and teenagers are more likely to suffer from “hidden hunger”.
B. Too many crops that are grown by people make farmland lose its nutrition.
C. When we cook cabbages, we can boil them to keep more nutrition.
D. Eating more fresh nutrition-rich food will make people fat.
