3.提问形式,题干中多出现what,which,when,where,who,how long,how much等疑问词。

Letter A
Dear sir/madam,
I’m writing to tell you about my recent holiday in Paris, which was a disaster. The young man at your travel agency told us that the price includes four things in a five-star hotel with a view. Well, that was a joke, and it was clearly not five-star hotel. There were only two small beds in our family room, so our son had to sleep on the floor. There weren’t any clean towels in the bathroom and there were lots of insects all over the place. Hundreds of them, in fact. Yes, there was a view from the bedroom window—but it was a view of a motorway and the airport. There was noise all night and we couldn’t sleep. There were no drinks included in the breakfast and we had to pay extra for milk! We strongly ask for a refund.
Yours faithfully
Mr.& Mrs. Masterson
Letter B
Dear sit/madam,
Three weeks ago, I booked a flight to New York with your airline. When I bought the ticket, I asked for vegetarian food. However, when I was on the plane, the flight attendant told me that there weren’t any vegetarian options available. She also said that there wasn’t anything she could do about it as we were already in the air. To make matters worse, there was a snowstorm in New York, so the plane was diverted to Washington. The total flight time was more than 15 hours, and there was nothing for me to eat! There weren’t even any peanuts! Thankfully, my holiday in New York was great, and there was vegetarian food available on my flight back to London. But please make sure that there’s vegetarian food available on all future flights.
Yours sincerely
Brian Smethurst

Five Tips for Students Living Away From Home
Don’t Skip Orientation Week
Be involved! It’s the most effective way to make friends during the first couple weeks of being away from home. I am a fairly quiet person, and I came to university without knowing anyone. It was a little hard at first, but as long as you participate and keep your spirits up, you should make new friends in no time.
Resist the Urge to Go Home
I would suggest not making a habit of going home every weekend so you won’t miss out on things that happen during the weekend at school. Try to avoid going home the weekend after O-Week ends, or for all of September if possible. The first month will be the biggest adjustment and it’s just easier to settle in, hang out with people and explore the city on weekends.
Stay Connected
I message and text my sister often and Facebook my friends to keep connected. Making new friends and diving into activities and homework is a great way to keep yourself occupied, but in those moments when you are feeling incredibly lonely and wondering what your mom is making for dinner, you need something extra. My recommendation is to have a couple photo albums to look through. It’s also a good idea to make a plan to have a friend or family member come visit you. That way you have a piece of home to look forward to.
Spend Time on Campus
I met many off-campus people during O-week and in my classes, and some are now my best friends. Get involved in clubs, talk to people and don’t go home immediately after your classes are done.
Live in Residence Halls(寄宿)
What you have to remember is that everybody else is going through the exact same thing, so take comfort in that. Get to know your floor, let them become your home away from home and you’ll see that you’ll get through it easier than you thought. My residence holds lots of events such as parties and mixers for us to meet new people. I’ve attended all the events in my residence and school, and I’ve met tons of awesome people! What I’d say is: don’t be shy, and socialize. You’ll make friends in no time. I’ve found residence halls to be beneficial, because my floor has helped each other through the transition People living on your floor are more likely to understand your problems with school rather than your friends from high school who go to other universities.
1.When you feel extremely lonely, you are advised to ______.
A.go back home immediately
B.invite a friend to visit you
C.devote yourself to homework
D.Facebook your friends or family
2.Why is it beneficial to live in residence halls?
A.It is full of people with the same experience
B.It is as comfortable as your own house
C.It is convenient to hold parties and activities
D.It’s similar to your old school
3.Who might be most interested in reading the text?
A.Graduates B.Job-hunters C.Parents D.Freshmen

With the beautiful snow-coated landscapes, winter reveals a different world of national parks with significantly fewer crowds. Here are some of the best national parks in the US for a winter getaway.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Between October and March, Acadia National Park’s Cadillac Mountain, the tallest mountain on the east coast, offers hikers epic views of the first sunrise in the country. Because the roads are closed to motor vehicles during the winter, those who undertake the 3.5-mile hike from Park Loop Road are rewarded with a stunning view all to themselves. Snowmobiling in the park is another special experience for visitors.
Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State
Mount Rainier National Park in Washington State is one of the oldest national parks in the US and a playground for outdoor enthusiasts in winter. Unlike other snow-crowded resorts, this park allows visitors to heartily enjoy snowmobiling, sledding and snowshoeing. Its hotel offers comfortable rooms with views of Mount Rainier, and tasty local dishes.
Denali National Park, Alaska
With its remote location and minimal light pollution, Denali National Park is an ideal place for photographers to capture the northern lights during the aurora (极光) season, between September and April. Visitors in this crowd-free park can spot wildlife such as wolves and black bears, which remain active in the winter.

Four Unique Festivals In Europe
Anything that exists or doesn’t exist can be the main theme of one of Europe’s festivals. Add excitement to your future travel plans with these unusual events.
Battle of the Oranges, Ivrea, Italy
Every year on the third week of February, the Italian town of Ivrea turns into a battlefield filled with oranges, where participants launch 600, 000 kilograms of oranges at each other during the historic carnival of the city. According to history, the Battle of the Oranges aimed to reconstruct a 12th-century battle between the locals and Napoleon’s royal army.
Air Guitar World Championships, Oulu, Finland
Anyone can try to play the guitar, but it takes a special talent to play an invisible guitar. Every August, musical instrument artists from all over the world flock to northern Finland, putting their best onstage “shamelessly” with their invisible instruments to compete for the event. Held in conjunction with the Oulu Music Video Festival, this contest since 1996 has been aiming to promote world peace
Running of the Bulls, Pamplona, Spain
This internationally recognized event, which starts on July 7th, has grown massively. It originated from men using fear and excitement to hurry the process of taking cattle to market. Nowadays the event is a lot more organized, and thousands now run through a barricaded (设路障的) course being chased by a thundering herd of bulls!
Kettlewell Scarecrow (稻草人) Festival, Kettlewell, Britain
In medieval times, farmers in England would often make unique human dolls out of straw to chase away fierce animals and birds, and place them in the fields to protect the crops. Later, this tradition gradually evolved into this national farmers’ festival. For two weeks in August, a variety of activities have emerged, including the finely crafted scarecrow production, and competing for the champion in the competition.

Maples are known for their autumn colors. Many species put on a display of oranges, browns, yellows, and reds every year. Here are four excellent species of maple for your landscape.
Bigleaf maple
Native Area: North America
Height: 50 to 100 feet
As the name suggests, the leaves are quite large on this tree. It has the biggest leaves of any maple; the classic palm-shape leaves can be over 12 inches wide. This large tree is an excellent shade tree for large landscapes and parks.
Hedge maple
Native Area: Europe and Asia
Height: 25 to 35 feet
The hedge maple is a great choice for the urban garden, as it does well in many severe environments: drought, salty soils, shady locations, and climates where there is ozone deficiency. It can also be used as a street tree if the power lines are high enough.
Norway maple
Native Area: Europe and Asia
Height: usually 40 to 50 feet
Known either as Norway maple or European maple, this popular species was brought to North America from Europe in the 18th century. It has since become one of the most common trees. In the right settings, this species may become invasive (侵入的), so before planting it, check to make sure it is not a problem in your region.
Hornbeam maple
Native Area: Japan
Height: 15 to 30 feet
Many species of plant within a genus have a similar appearance, but there can be surprises, as is the case with the hornbeam maple. Its leaves are nothing like what you expect from a maple. This can be a somewhat difficult plant to find for sale, but it can make a good small tree or a large shrub (灌木) in the landscape.
1.What might the name of the first maple be based on?
A.Its height. B.Its native area.
C.The size of its leaves. D.The function it performs.
2.Which can adapt to various challenging environments?
A.The bigleaf maple. B.The hedge maple.
C.The norway maple. D.The hornbeam maple.
3.What can we learn about the hornbeam maple?
A.Its leaves look like hands.
B.It is larger than other maples.
C.It is easy to find for sale at the market.
D.Its leaves differ from those of typical maples.

Four Really Strange Beaches
Sandy stretches of gray, brown or even white are the world’s norm. Even rocky beaches or those with sheer cliffs barring passage for everyone save the bravest adventurers are not rare. These unique beaches are some of the best treats nature has to offer.
Papakolea Beach, Hawaii, USA
Papakōlea Beach is a green sand beach located near South Point, in the Ka’ū district of the island of Hawai ’i. One of only two green sand beaches in the World, the other being in Galapagos Islands.
Papakōlea Beach is associated with the southwest rift (裂谷) of Mauna Loa. Since its last eruption, the cinder cone has partially collapsed and been partially swallowed by the ocean.
San Alfonso del Mar Beach, Chile
This beach is located between the largest artificial pool. San Alfonso del Mar Beach is an essential part of the luxurious resort of the same name.
It seems a strange spot for the world’s largest swimming pool. But the pool’s remarkable spaciousness (宽敞) complements the ocean beyond rather effortlessly, and jumping in the pool’s 79℉(26℃) water is a much more attractive prospect than venturing into the 63℉(17℃) seawater nearby.
Maho Beach, Sint Maarten
Maho Beach is a beach on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, in the country of Sint Maarten. It is famous for the Princess Juliana International Airport next to the beach.
Arriving aircraft must touch down as close as possible to the beginning of Runway 10 due to the short runway length of 380 metres, resulting in aircraft on their final approach flying over the beach at minimal altitude.
Ocean Dome, Japan
This is an artificial beach constructed in the Seagaia re son along the coastal highway outside the city of Myazaki in Japan it has a fully controlled indoor climate throughout the year.
The Ocean Dome, which was a popular part of the Sheraton Seagaia Resort, measures 300 meters in length and 100 meters in width.
1.What has Papakōlea Beach experienced in Hawaii?
A.One mineral. B.One connection.
C.One fierce rift. D.One severe outbreak.
2.What’s the most exciting in San Alfonso del Mar Beach, Chile?
A.Jumping into the pool’s water
B.Learning to jump water in the pool

Paris Travel TipsBest Months to Visit
The best time to visit Paris is from June to August and September to October. Both summer and fall have its ups and downs. From June to August the weather in Paris is just about parfait (perfect). Average highs are in the high 70s and there are long days of sunshine. Unfortunately, summer is also the most crowded time—and the most expensive. For lower travel rates and significantly shorter lines at attractions, plan a visit in the fall. The seasonal foliage is known to stun, though the city’s spring blooms are pretty famous too. If a travel deal is all that you’re after, a visit during the winter will surely shave off travel expenses. Keep in mind though that Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, seeing upward of 30 million travelers yearly. So no matter what time you visit, there will always be tourists and some crowds.
Culture & Customs
While many Parisians know English (especially in tourist areas and hotels), a little effort from your end really can go a long way. Pleasantries are highly regarded in French culture. A “bonjour” (hello or good day) or “bonsoir” (good evening) here and there will not only show that you’re trying on their turf (地盘), which the French appreciate, but enhance your own cultural experience. “Merci” is thank you and “s’il vous plaft” is please. If you’re at a loss for words, politely ask the waiter or shop attendant “Pouvez-vous m’aider?” (Can you help me?) or “Parlez-vous anglais?” (Do you speak English?). Another helpful phrase: “Excusez-moi” (Pardon or excuse me). If you are introduced to French people in social situations, stick to a handshake unless the person you are meeting initiates the les bises, or the greeting where people lightly kiss each other on the cheek once or twice. If you aren’t comfortable, merely stick out your hand for a handshake.
1.Which is the cheapest travelling season in Paris?
A.Spring. B.Summer. C.Autumn. D.Winter.
2.What is appreciated in French culture?
A.Speaking English in tourist areas and hotels. B.Showing politeness in communication.
C.Enhancing the cultural experience. D.Going a long way around the city.
3.When are you supposed to greet a Frenchman with a kiss on the cheek?
A.When he greets you with the les bises. B.When you are at a loss for words.
C.When he sticks to a handshake. D.When you are uncomfortable.

1.The Masterson family had a holiday in Paris.
A.relaxing B.boring C.terrible D.satisfying
2.Brian Smethurst was most dissatisfied with ________on the flight to New York.
A.no vegetarian food B.the taste of the food
C.the long flying hours D.the attitude of flight attendants
3.The two letters above are letters of________.
A.thanks B.complaints C.apology D.introductions
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B
A“I’m writing to tell you about my recent holiday in Paris, which was a disaster.(我写信是想告诉你我最近在巴黎的假期,那是一场灾难。)”

Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico
In northern New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park holds stone great houses, which were the largest buildings in North America until the mid-18th century. Accessible for most of the winter, the park can see fewer than 10 visitors a day in colder months. Photographers can capture landscapes amid the constellations (星群) by night.

【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A
