People say there seems to be so much negativity in this world, but there are good people out there and sometimes we are made aware of them when we least expect it.
My family had been planning a yard sale for several weeks. Our five-year-old son, Braxton, asked if he could set up a lemonade (柠檬水) stand during the yard sale. He wanted to make a little money and save up to buy a set of Lego bricks, which might add up to $100. “I will earn it myself!” he declared proudly. He had been talking about it almost non-stop and couldn’t wait for the day to finally arrive.
Two days ago, we put up the sign “Yard Sale” in front of the driveway, telling neighbors about the time and items. On the very day, Braxton woke up early at 6:00 am and couldn’t hide his excitement. After setting everything out for the yard sale, he made the lemonade and baked some cookies to begin his business adventure.
After about an hour or more, we had several customers, but Braxton still had not sold any lemonade. He was a little sad. Then a young woman walked up with her baby to browse the items. While making small talk, we told her about Braxton’s plan to save his money for his little dream. She then selected a couple of baby toys for just $6 and paid with a $10 bill. “Keep the change, boy!” she said gently. Braxton offered to give her the lemonade and cookies he made. He couldn’t have been happier to receive his first little bit of money for the day.
The woman left with the baby toys, the lemonade and some cookies. We didn’t give it much thought after that, but the story didn’t end there.

My brother and I set off shortly after sunrise. The air was cool, but I knew that wouldn’t last long. I’d chosen this hike for a hot day like today so that we’d climb down into a redrock canyon (峡谷) , where we would swim in a pool and camp by a picturesque waterfall. I knew it wouldn’t be an easy hike, though. I’d researched and planned for weeks, knowing climbing down into the canyon is challenging.
About a mile in, the trail started to dip down to the river and the footing became steep (陡峭的) . After repeated slips on the loose ground, my brother decided to turn back to the car. Unwilling to give up on my plan so soon and remembering there was another car where we parked, I believed there was someone else going to the canyon. So I chose to continue alone. He gave me the bag which contained food and water. Then we decided to meet up at the car the next day.
After another mile or so, the river came into view below me, but the trail became less obvious. I chose to go down along a bush-covered slope (斜坡) . As soon as I began hiking down, though, I realized the ground was much looser than I’d thought. I decided to climb back up and find another way.
I tried to pull myself up, but, unfortunately, the rock I was standing on broke beneath me. My face struck earth first. I was rolling with my bag, dirt and red sandstone flying beneath me as I picked up speed. I was going to die, I thought.
Then I fell flat on my back, my head hitting on a baseball-size stone. To my surprise, I was alive, but everything hurt. After lying in confusion for a few moments, I tried to look around. One of my eyes was already swollen shut, and through the other, the world spun around me. I could hardly move my left hand, and my right ankle hurt terribly.

Hiking in the wild is one of Ehlers’ favorite hobbies. And he had a single goal: to hike in the hills of west - central Iowa, which is the best wild place for people who love hiking in the wild. Although it’s about 250 miles from the hills of west - central Iowa to Ehlers’ home in Minnesota, he still put into practice with his friends.
During a long trip home, following a weekend of hiking, Ehlers thought about the small brown dog he had seen trembling alongside the road. At the time, he stopped the car and tried to coax (哄劝) the dog to him but, frightened, it ran off. It immediately disappeared without a trace.
Back home, Ehlers was troubled by that lost dog, which drove him to make up his mind to find that dog. So, four days later, he called his friend Greg, and the two drove back.
Arriving at that place, they came across a local farmer and asked him, “Have you seen a lost dog? We had seen the dog trembling alongside the road four days ago.” Meanwhile, Greg described the dog’s appearance to him.
“The dog sounded like one advertised as lost in the local paper. The ad had a phone number for a town in southern Minnesota and the dog’s picture,” the local farmer told them.
Ehlers and Greg were excited to know that the dog’s owners were Jeff and Lisa. So they called Jeff and Lisa to tell them they were finding their dog. Hearing that, Jeff was surprised and said, “We had hiked in Iowa before Thanksgiving with our dog, Rosie, but a fierce dog came out of nowhere and scared Rosie off. We searched in vain for Rosie in the next four days. So we drove back home.”
“We are also driving there now, and it will take about two hours to arrive in Iowa. Tell me exactly where you are. Let’s search Rosie together,” Jeff said. “OK. We will wait for you while looking for Rosie,” Ehlers replied.

In a small village set between rolling hills (连绵起伏的山丘), there lived a young girl named Lily. Lily had always dreamed of becoming a painter, but in her village, most girls were expected to help their families with farming or housework. Despite this, Lily’s parents recognized her talent and supported her passion for art. They saved to buy her brushes and paints, and Lily spent every spare moment practicing her craft.
One day, an artist passing through the village noticed Lily’s paintings displayed proudly in her humble home. Impressed by her skill at such a young age, he encouraged Lily to follow her dreams in the city, where opportunities for artists were plentiful. Lily’s heart was filled with hope. With her parents’ blessing and a backpack filled with her artwork, Lily set off on a journey to the busy city.
In the city, Lily faced many challenges. She lived in a narrow apartment and took odd jobs to make ends meet. Despite frustrations (挫折) and refusals, Lily persevered. She joined art classes, attended exhibitions, and sought out teachers who could guide her. Her determination caught the eye of a famous gallery owner who saw potential in her unique style. Lily’s first exhibition was a success, selling a few pieces that earned her just enough to cover her rent.
As Lily’s fame grew, so did her confidence. She painted scenes inspired by her village, showing its beauty and simplicity. Her paintings began to attract collectors and art enthusiasts from far and wide. Lily’s dream of making a living through art was finally becoming a reality.
But success didn’t protect Lily from self-doubt. The pressure to produce more, to meet expectations, weighed heavily on her shoulders. One day, Lily found herself staring at an empty canvas (画布), unable to find inspiration. Frustration started to appear, and doubts clouded her mind. Was she really good enough? Could she maintain her success?

I had appendicitis (阑尾炎) when I was twelve. It ended up getting serious, and I was in the hospital for the better part of the summer. For the first week or so, I was so miserable that I didn’t really do anything but sleep, but as I started feeling better, I wanted to keep occupied. I read too quickly for my mom to keep me in books and wasn’t really interested in television even then, so my mom was desperate.
This being the early 2000s, she eventually hit on one of the most popular trends of the time: bead (珠子) keychains. She bought me some threads, a bag of beads in every color of the rainbow and a book that taught me how to make all different types of animals. I mastered the making process of it pretty quickly, and it kept me happily engaged in between books.
One day, one of the nurses came in and saw me working on one and exclaimed over how cute it was. She was one of my favorite nurses, so I immediately offered her one, and she immediately attached it to her ID badge (徽章). A nursing assistant asked for one, so I gave him one too, and then my doctor… and then it seemed like everyone wanted one!
I started spending most of my time making lizards (蜥蜴), snakes, and a turtle in the color combinations requested. My mom said she felt bad that it was turning from a hobby into a chore, but I genuinely enjoyed it and wanted to make something for everybody who’d been so nice to me when I was sick.
What I didn’t find out until some time later was that one of the officers supervising the hospital saw one of my nurses and criticized her for the lizard hanging on her badge and the officer said that the lizard was“ out of uniform” and therefore against regulations.

Computers have been my main career focus for the last three decades. That is all because of a great teacher who trusted me with the school’s only computer.
When I was in tenth grade in 1980, my high school purchased a single computer, which was a significant technological advancement for that time. The computer was acquired towards the end of the school year, and its arrival caused quite a stir among the students and staff alike. A particular math teacher, who wasn’t one of my instructors that year, was assigned the responsibility of overseeing this new addition. This teacher was known for his enthusiasm about technology and his willingness to share it with students.
Upon hearing about the new computer, my curiosity was aroused. I eagerly went to see it and was delighted to find that the teacher was welcoming and open to letting me experiment with it after school. I spent countless free time exploring the computer’s capabilities, writing basic programs, and learning how to navigate its features. My fascination with this technology grew each day, and I began to imagine the possibilities it offered.
As the end of the school year approached, I made a plan to continue working with the computer during the summer. I thought it might be possible to check out the computer, just as the school routinely loaned out expensive band equipment. I was hopeful that my request would be granted, considering how much I had grown to appreciate the computer and the progress I had made with it. However, when I approached the administration with my proposal, I was met with a firm refusal. The reason given was that the school had plans to use the computer to set up a student gradebook system. So, the math teacher and I boxed up the computer and placed it in a locked storage closet in the main school building. That summer vacation seemed to be the longest one I had ever had.

The waiter carefully placed our food on the table. “Enjoy your meal. Let me know if you need anything,” he said with a polite smile as he walked off to serve the other guests in the restaurant.
Raul lifted his fork to begin eating before I interrupted him, “Wait, can I take a picture for my blog?”
He sighed, “Go ahead.” I took out my cell phone and took the picture. Then, I spent the next thirty seconds deciding on how to make a perfect post.
By the time our ice cream dessert came around, I was getting ready to take my fifth picture of the night. Raul rolled his eyes. I quickly had a shot of the dessert before asking him, “Sorry, am I bothering you by taking pictures?”
“I’m not going to lie. It’s a little annoying, ” he said hesitantly. “But it’s okay. I want you to do what makes you happy.”
I put away the phone, a little bit embarrassed, and decided to just enjoy our dinner. While we conversed over dessert, his statement lingered(逗留)in the back of my mind. It wasn’t until I reached home that I really thought over the issue. Did taking pictures of my life to show someone whom I barely spoke to make me happy? Well, there was definitely that indescribable feeling I felt when my post gained over twenty likes. It felt good; it felt like I won, But, what was the prize?
I looked through the stream of photos that I had posted of Raul and me. Most were of our time spent at fine restaurants or the latest attractions near our city, and the brand name gifts we bought each other on holidays. I clicked on the profiles of other people I knew and noticed a similar trend.
Well, when my post gained over twenty likes, it felt good. But does it really matter?

In a quiet town located in the heart of China, there lived a boy named Chen. From a young age, Chen harbored a burning passion to become a famous musician, a dream that seemed far out of reach, for he was born deaf. Many in the town considered his aspiration impossible, but Chen was determined. He believed that music was not just about hearing, but about feeling and connecting with the heart and soul.
Chen’s musical journey began with the ancient guqin, a traditional Chinese instrument known for its beautiful sounds. He spent hours feeling the gentle touch of the strings under his fingertips, learning each note’s distinct sound by heart. His devotion to understanding music through its vibrations became his unique method of communicating with the music world.
Gradually the tale of the deaf boy’s extraordinary talent swiftly spread across the town and beyond, drawing crowds eager to witness his performances. Chen’s music, filled with depth and emotion, touched the hearts of many and slowly shaped his dream into reality.
His persistence and skill eventually caught the attention of a celebrated musician, professor Wang. She decided to travel far to see Chen perform. Closing his eyes, Chen allowed his hands to find their way along the guqin. Upon witnessing Chen’s live performance, professor Wang was struck with amazement. The raw emotion and skill with which Chen played gugin impressed professor Wang, a musician famous for her contributions to preserving China’s traditional music. She stood, with her heart beating with excitement and admiration for the young boy before her.
Professor Wang approached Chen, her eyes shining with respect and a newfound purpose. She recognized not just a student in him, but the passion for Chinese music. “Your talent is extraordinary. Everything changed for me when I entered high school. Among 790 freshmen, I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. My elder brother was a senior and was making decisions about his future in college. My little brother didn’t want anything to do with me. My older sister was outgoing and never without her friends. “They all fit in.” I thought.
The comfort came—my mom was there waiting for my coming back. I was about to run towards her, hug her and get the bad feelings off my chest when I heard, “Carole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean? ”
Another strike! The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother. I just wanted a few warm words from her. “Mom, I… ” I tried to explain my suffering but was interrupted by a telephone ring.
“One minute, Carole.” Mom walked away and answered the phone. It seemed that she was negotiating something with her editor. I saw her sitting down by her desk, nodding her head now and then, and carefully taking notes. I knew she was a great writer and mother, strict with herself and affectionate towards us. I also knew she was busy all these days, but still, I couldn’t help feeling disappointed and upset.
I went back to my room and pulled out my maths exercise. I started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. “Wrong again!” I thought. I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The paper ball landed on the floor. By the time I finished my homework, the floor had been littered with paper balls. Out of something unknown, it gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I’d made. I kicked the paper balls under the bed and left the room without tidying it up.
The next day, I came home to an empty house. I dragged myself to my bedroom as usual.

One afternoon, Emma and I were walking home from school, chatting about our day. Emma, with her curious eyes shining, asked me about my friendship with Lucy. Without thinking, I said, “I only hung out with Lucy because she wanted me to, but I didn’t really want to be friends with her. She was kind of boring.”
Unluckily, I didn’t know Lucy was nearby. When I looked up, she was right there, having heard everything. Her face turned pale, and her eyes got big with surprise. She didn’t say anything and ran off. Emma and I just stood there, feeling bad. I knew I should go after Lucy and say sorry, but I was too shocked to move. Emma’s face turned red too. We walked home without talking, and it felt like our steps were getting heavier
The next days were hard. I felt really bad about what I said and wanted to fix things with Lucy. I needed to say sorry. But what should I say? Even though I didn’t mean to, I hurt Lucy’s feelings. Every time I saw her at school, I looked away quickly.
Then, something interesting happened in our speaking class. On Tuesday, Ms. Julia said we would do pre-class speeches. She had written our topics on small pieces of paper and put them in a box. We had to pick one without knowing what it was. I was a bit nervous. When I reached into the box, I pulled out a paper that said, “Tell your most embarrassing moment.” My heart was beating fast. It felt like I was given a chance to make things right
I spent the next few days practicing my speech, trying to find the right words to apologize to Lucy. I wanted to be sincere and show her I was sorry. When the day of the speech came, I was still nervous, but I knew it was important to face my mistake. I stood in front of the class, took a deep breath, and began to share my story, hoping it would help me and Lucy move forward.

Jack, who had just moved with his parents to a new town, was new to Emerson School. But he was very worried about his speech problem that had often brought about laughter from his former classmates. Although he had tried to exchange ideas with his classmates, he was inconstant fear of being laughed at. Shy and reserved, Jack had always felt like an outsider, never quite fitting in.
Fortunately, Katherine, Jack’s science teacher in the new school, immediately noticed why Jack shied away when he was called upon to speak in class and made up her mind to lend a hand. Whenever Jack got stuck in his speech, the warm-hearted and caring woman would wait patiently and smile at him encouragingly. Whenever possible, she was ready to praise his efforts and said to him, “You are so great!” The teacher hoped that such encouragement would provide Jack with the necessary confidence to overcome his speech problem. But all her efforts failed.
Then she adopted a different method and tried to help Jack find the potential that might be hidden by the speech problem.
During the class, Katherine announced that each student should present their answer to a problem in front of the class, in their unique way. Jack’s heart sank and felt gripped by the familiar fear and anxiety. He kept thinking how he could possibly stand before his classmates to explain his answer clearly and whether his classmates would laugh at his speech problem again. He sat there, watching his classmates take turns to walk up to the front. Most of them went through their presentation smoothly and went back to their seats with broad smiles. However, Jack felt as if he was sitting on pins and needles while waiting for his turn.

I remembered when I was a child, whenever our teachers or parents asked about our hobbies, my friends and I would always express our love for reading. However, with the development of high technology, I sense our lives are gradually occupied by a variety of entertainment methods. Electronic screens of all sizes are everywhere, and they attract our attention like magnets (吸铁石) and gradually distance us from the world of books. Today’s attracting social media, the excitement of games, movies, TV shows and animated (有生机的) works satisfy our sensory needs, stimulating us to a point that sometimes we forget to eat or sleep.
However, this happiness is short-lived, leaving behind the desire to want more. As a result, many people no longer have the patience to experience the “delayed gratification” that comes from reading.
I have had the same experience before. There was a time when I felt like my life went downhill, and with increased pressure from school, physical tiredness and emotional burdens, I had to watch short videos to distract myself from those troubles.
It is said that the goal of short video creators is to catch the audience’s attention in three seconds. They have a clear understanding of my preferences and viewing habits, and accurately feed their noisy videos on my mobile screen.
Like millions of other users, I am controlled by the algorithm (算法). Whether I am at home, at school, or on the go, I am constantly being taken on a sensory roller coaster (过山车) ride by short videos, which leaves me feeling both physically and mentally tired.

Liza was a young girl with bright eyes and a hopeful smile. She was sitting on her bed with her laptop. She scrolled through an online store, her eyes lighting up at the sight of a beautiful dress.
It was a designer gown(女礼服), shining with sequins(亮片)But it was way out of her budget. She sighed and looked over at her mother, who was reading a book in the armchair by the window.
“Mom, can I please get this dress for my prom(正式舞会)? It’s perfect!” Liza pleaded, showing the screen to her mother.
Her mother glanced at the price and shook her head. “Liza, that’s too expensive. We can’t afford to spend that much on a dress you’ll wear once.”
“But, Mom. Everyone at school is talking about their designer dresses. I don’t want to be the only one without one,” Liz a argued, her voice rising with frustration.
Her mother sighed, trying to stay calm. “Honey, I understand, but spending that much money on a dress isn’t practical. Besides, someone has a surprise for you today. You might not need to buy a dress.”
Liza lit up. “A surprise? What kind of surprise?”
Her mother smiled mysteriously. “You’ll see. Just be patient.”
Liza’s grandmother, palm, entered the house, holding a package wrapped neatly in gift paper. Pam’s eyes twinkled as she approached Liza.
“Hello, dear! I brought you something special,” palm said warmly, handing the package to Liza.
Liza’s curiosity got the better of her, and she eagerly tore open the package. Inside was a beautiful dress, hand crafted with fine details and care.
“Liza, try it on. It was made by your grandmother, though not a designer, but it is a sign of love from her,” her mother said.

At tea-making time every year in Kenya, Boss Kende would personally monitor the process in the workshop. This year was no exception.
Boss Kende was an expert in tea-making and very fond of the flavor of tea. Seeing the green tea leaves drying, he felt like it was a grand and fascinating ceremony, as magical as the birth of a child. He was filled with joy when participating in this process, even feeling a little moved. After breakfast, Boss Kende went to the workshop. The familiar smell of tea leaves made him feel refreshed. The workers were busy working. All the tea leaves collected from the tea farmers yesterday were ready to be dried.
“Ah, there you are, Boss!” When the workers saw him coming, they immediately greeted him. “Hi, guys! How is everything with you?” With a smile, he approached the iron pot used for drying tea leaves to start working.
“Kende, this batch of tea is of very high quality, but it’s a pity the leaves were bitten by insects. I wonder whether the flavor will suffer because of it.” The man who was speaking was named Kipsang from the tea farm.
When the tea leaves were delivered to the workshop from the farm, insects were clearly seen on the leaves. The son of Boss Kende proposed purchasing them at a lower price. When Kende learnt about this, he insisted his son still pay the originally agreed-to price. The villagers were very grateful, but felt a little indebted to Kende.
“Don’t worry! This batch of tea leaves will be made into black tea. When they’re ready, we’ll first taste them before putting them on the market. In the worst case, if it’s actually a loss, I can still afford it.” The boss comforted Kipsang as he worked. Boss Kende kept holding up tea leaves and then spread them out in the pot. The water in the leaves was gradually evaporating.

He was the prettiest homeless dog we had ever seen at the shelter. We immediately fell in love with him and decided to give him a permanent home. Our ten-year-old daughter. Margie, named him Onyx because of his thick, shiny black hair. When we adopted him, Onyx was only ten weeks old and we had no idea that this amazing little baby dog would end up being our hero.
As he grew older, Onyx became more and more involved in our family activities. He particularly loved swimming with us on hot summer days. He would float in the river in his own rubber tube(橡皮圈). Sometimes, he would stand on the top of the tube with a big smile and show off his perfect balance. Otherwise, he would rest his front legs over the edge of the rubber tube and keep his eyes shut as he floated until he had enough of the warm sun on his thick, black coat.
One day, Margie announced she was going to swim in the pond in front of our house. But it happened that no one in the family was free to go swimming with her that day. The unwritten rule in my family, regardless of swimming ability, was to have a companion in the water. I was not a good swimmer, so I said to Margie, “Take Onyx with you.”
Having heard his name, Onyx jumped to his feet and was ready for action. Margie signaled him to follow and they rushed to the water together. However, I still felt uneasy at the moment.
I went to the doorway and watched them reach the pond. They rested on the shore for a few minutes before diving into the water and started swimming side by side. Suddenly I heard Margie calling out, “Help! My leg hurts!”

“Only a couple hours to go,” I told myself. We’d made it to northern Indiana after driving all afternoon and evening, heading home from a family vacation in Wisconsin. We’d gotten a late start packing up, none of us wanting to leave our lakeside hotel before we had to. Now we were paying the price. It would be past midnight when we got home.
My wife Jeannie, who was always thoughtful and positive, drove for some time to allow me to take a break from driving. Now I took the turn. However, I wasn’t so alert (警觉的).
I turned on the radio, softly, so as not to disturb my wife, who was sleeping beside me. I was on a two-lane state highway. It was slower than the interstate, but less stressful. I generally didn’t mind driving late at night, though I really could have used a cup of coffee. I had a look at my three sleeping children, ages 14, 10, and 3, in the back seat. “Keep alert!” I said to myself.
The voice of my 3-year-old son, Jon, broke the silence. “I have to go to the bathroom, Dad.” I couldn’t stop in the middle of the highway in the dark. But right up ahead was a building. A diner. Maybe a chance to get that coffee. I pulled into the parking lot. The restaurant was closed.
I looked around and saw the tall grass surrounding the lot. That would have to do for Jon. I led Jon there. As he took care of business, I tried to drive away a mosquito that flew out of the grass. Then another. And another. I urged Jon to hurry. We ran back to the car and closed the doors. Jeannie, our oldest daughter Amy, and Jennifer who still wore her hat were wide awake.
I felt a mosquito touch down on my neck. I said, “I sure picked the wrong place to stop.” Jeannie patted me on the arm and attempted to catch the mosquito.
I switched on the light in the car. The children were screaming, “They’re everywhere!”
“You do the driving,” Jeannie quickly said to me with a smile. “Let us take care of the mosquitoes.”
The children readily agreed.

I’m smaller than everyone else my age. When I walk in the halls at school, I have to squeeze in between the bigger kids to get by. At the playground, sometimes even little kids try to boss me around. Mia, my best friend, is so tall that when she walks, I have to jog to keep up with her.
I used to try to make myself taller whenever I could, but I was the same height every time. Frustrating! “Don’t worry,” Mum always said. “Being small has its advantages.” “Really? I could never notice any.”
One day, Mrs. Alvarez announced to the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines. But at the audition, when I walked up to the stage, Mrs. Alvarez cried, “You’ll be perfect as the elf! You’re just the right size for the costume.” I never even got a chance to deliver the lines I’d practiced. Back home I grumbled (咕哝) to Mum that I had been made an elf. But she bet I would be the best elf. To please her, I went to rehearsals, though I only had two lines.
Mia got the lead role — a girl wandering through a magical fairy forest in search of her lost dog. In the last scene, she finds a box under a giant mushroom, and when she opens it, her dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals, and when he wasn’t onstage, we got to play with him, but he seemed to like me best.
The night of the show, my first line came early. Since my only other line was toward the end, I waited offstage, playing with Prince. Finally, the grand end came, and Prince was brought onstage inside the box. But the box was found empty. Mrs. Alvarez said, “A burst of noise frightened him away. I see him under the stage!”

It was early spring in Fairbanks, and puppies were blossoming like flowers among melting snow in Susie’s dog yard. “How can I ever turn you into a winning team?” Susie said, laughing. She’d dreamed of winning the yearly Dog Sled Championships Race.
“Which pups will you choose?” Susie’s mother asked. “I think I’ll just choose three of four Aurora’s pups,” Susie said, but she knew that only three of these little puppies would make it to the big race. Although Aurora’s pups were only four weeks old, Susie already saw differences among them. Pluto was naughty, while Sunshine was shy, and Foxy was a tease. Fudge was the most responsive to her. Actually. Fudge was the smallest one.
“Will you be my lead dog someday when your mother Aurora is old?” Susie said, holding Fudge’s tiny face to hers. “He’s awfully small,” Susie’s mother said. His brothers and sisters were already twice his size. “He’ll grow fast,” Susie said. “I’ll train him right along with the others.”
Training puppies was a family affair. Susie’s mother and father raised thirteen strong dogs. Susie planned to make her best team this time. Susie trained each of them for their roles. Aurora was surely the leader of her four-dog team. As for Fudge, Susie would also give Fudge a small branch when she often let team dogs pull branches as a kind of training. He kept pulling it even when the other pups knocked him over. He kept working at tasks that Susie gave him, no matter how tired he got. Susie loved him for trying so hard.
When spring snow melted into summer, Susie ran her pups through flowered fields and wooded hills to keep them in shape. She felt delighted when Aurora proved to be a good leader and the team did well. Unexpectedly, Fudge got the summer growth that she hadn’t counted on. Though not officially belonging to the team, every practice, Fudge did his best beyond Susie had imagined.

WINNING
Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. He had never lost a contest, but that didn’t calm him. Tom glanced at the other rockets. They all had their own problems. One rocket, however, caught his eye. It’s perfect in every aspect. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his. It belonged to a newcomer — ED.Suddenly, Ed turned, his sight pausing on Tom’s rocket. Admiring it for a while, he then gave Tom a thumbs- up with a smile.
The announcer began to explain the competition. Tom barely listened; he couldn’t help but repeatedly look over to Ed’s rocket. Suddenly his heart did a leap. Tom knew that Ed had no chance of winning. He had noticed that as Ed lifted his rocket to place it on the launch pad, one fin (翼) had caught against something on the ground, pulling it away from the rocket and making it loose. But Ed hadn’t noticed. He glanced back at Tom and gave another thumbs- up sign. Tom felt sorry but decided he wasn’t going to des troy a sure win by saying anything. Anyway, it was up to Ed to keep checking his rocket.
The contest began. Most gained respectable heights but none exceeded (超过)1,000 feet. Tom watched, but the problems the others had didn’t make him feel good. For the first time the looks on their faces bothered him.
Tom thought about the loose fin of Ed’s rocket, wondering if he should say something. He was lost in thought and didn’t hear his name being called. When it was repeated, it shocked him. He moved to the pad. With a shaky hand, he connected the wires to the igniter (点火器). Stepping back to the firing board, he took a deep breath and pushed the button. His rocket climbed wonderfully to a height of 1,100 feet. As he ran out into the field to pick up his rocket, he heard Ed’s name being announced.

My husband and I have dark skin, so the skin of my daughter Ruby is also dark. Every time she goes out or has a party with children, someone will laugh at her, “Ruby, how black you are! Are you originally from Africa?”
At first, as Ruby was still small, it was not unusual to hear such words. But later I found that Ruby was unhappy that others called her black. One day when she was six years old, her uncle accidentally said, “Ruby, you will have a great advantage when you go to Africa. At least you will be able to blend(融合) in before others on the skin.” Ruby immediately burst into tears, “I am not black; why do you all say I am black?! I hate you!” Then she locked herself in her bedroom and cried thunderously. It took her uncle a lot of effort to coax(哄) her.
But from then on, Ruby would often ask me, “Mom, am I ugly?”
She washed her face every morning and evening, looked in the mirror repeatedly, and asked me to buy children’s skin care products for her. I can sense that the little girl loves beauty, and I want to make her feel better, so I bought her some children’s skin care products. But one day, I found that she had secretly used my liquid foundation, and I felt that I couldn’t let things get out of hand any more. I need to let her face her own shortcomings and to let her know that there are many imperfections in life, and we need to face and accept.
One day after picking up Ruby from school, I took her to the supermarket to buy her favorites. She chose a few snacks aimlessly, then wandered to the fruit section and pointed to some large apples with very smooth surfaces. “Mom, these apples are big and red. Let’s buy these apples!” She requested in a lovely way.

One day my mother and I were out having a girls’ day, and we decided to go to a seafood restaurant. We got there just as the lunch rush started, so there was a line to get in. I looked over to the side and spied a very thin lady with no coat. She was holding a sign that read: “Homeless and hungry. Please help.” I looked around at everyone, and no one looked like they cared in the least. I knew that if I didn’t do something, I will be regretful forever. I went over to her and asked if she would like to come out of the cold and get something to eat. She looked for a second like she was unsure I was talking to her. She put her head down and said in the lowest voice, “Yes.”
I helped her to her feet and walked her up to my mother, who was in line. We stood there together until we were seated. When the waitress came, she looked at the woman as if she were a disease waiting to attack her. She asked what we wanted to eat but completely neglected this woman and acted like she didn’t exist. Then the owner came over and asked if we wanted this woman to sit at our table. I assured her we did. The owner then asked what her name was, to which I replied that we hadn’t gotten to ask that yet because the waitress had come as soon as we sat down.
I told the waitress to take the woman’s order and get her a cup of coffee. After the waitress left, we got talking, and I found out that her name was Judy. “Oh, I must have forgotten my wallet at home. I’m so sorry. I’ll have to come back for these things later,” Mary said to the cashier, who started picking up the items and putting them back. Meanwhile, Mary prepared to walk away when the boy behind her in line spoke up.
“Wait, ma’ am. I’ll pay for them,” he said. He couldn’t be older than 12, and Mary noticed that he didn’t look particularly well-off.
“Oh, no. I couldn’t put you out like that,” Mary said.
“Sometimes, we have to do good things. That’s what my grandmother says all the time,” the boy said, paying for everything that Mary had picked out. Luckily, it was only a few essentials.
“Hey, I’m Mary Cummings. What’s your name?” she said conversationally.
“I’m Mark.”
“Thank you so much for what you did, Mark. It saved me a trip to the store. How about giving me your phone number so I can pay you back as soon as I get my wallet,” Mary suggested, and the kid wrote down his number on the receipt.
“Although I also believe in paying it forward like you and your grandma, we have to pay off our debts,” Mary said, and they said goodbye.
She got home and told her daughter, Anastacia, about the experience. “It was nice to see a young man being so kind,” Mary finished her story.
Mary called the kid to return the money the following day.
“Hello, Mrs. Cummings,” Mark said upon opening the front door. “I would invite you in, but I’m not supposed to have anyone over. My grandma would be mad.”
“Oh, where is she? Maybe, we can come later to meet her.” Anastacia added happily.
“She’s actually at the hospital and won’t get out for a while,” Mark explained with a frown (皱眉). Mary and Anastacia wanted to know more, so he continued. “She needs a huge surgery, and I started a GoFundMe, but it’s not that popular.”
“Oh, sweetie. You shouldn’t have to do that on your own,” Anastacia said, concerned.
“We don’t have anyone else. It’s only us,” Mark shrugged (耸肩).

Roderick threw himself into his seat in the back of the Washington city bus along with several other high school boys. It was another cold, gray day.
He still remembered his stomach chilling into a frozen knot as he approached the locker room last month. He had read the team list posted on the locker room door, hoping, searching anxiously for his name. It hadn’t been there.
It was missing. He had felt suddenly as if he had ceased to exist. Become invisible. It wasn’t easy starting a new school, especially for Roderick because he had been a star athlete in all sports at elementary school. Now, it seemed, he was nothing.
The bus came to a stop. A very pregnant woman hung onto the silver handrail and slowly pulled herself onto the bus. As she fell backward into the seat behind the bus driver, her feet kicked up, and Roderick saw that she wasn’t wearing any shoes.
The bus driver yelled over his shoulder, “Where are your shoes, lady? It is freezing out there.”
“I can’t afford shoes,” the woman answered.
“I got on the bus just to get my feet warm,” the woman continued. “If you don’t mind, I’ll just ride around with you for a bit.” Some of the boys at the back exchanged glances and rolled their eyes.
The driver scratched his head and shouted, “Now just tell me how come you can’t afford shoes?”
“I got eight kids. They all got shoes. There’s not enough left for me.”
Roderick looked down at his new Nike basketball shoes. His feet were warm and cozy. And then he looked back at the woman. Her socks were torn. Her coat, missing buttons, hung open around her stomach, as swollen as a basketball.
Roderick didn’t hear anything around him after that. The word “invisible” popped into his mind again. An invisible person forgotten by society, but for a different reason, he thought.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But the cold was not invisible.

【新八省阅读·读后续写01】(24-25高三上·云南大理·开学考试)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Several minutes passed and the woman returned.

Holding the envelope and the bill, we were so moved.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Several minutes passed and the woman returned. “Is there anything wrong?” I thought to myself. I actually thought she was here to ask for her change back. Of course, I couldn’t have been more wrong. She was carrying an envelope this time. She handed it to us and said, “The lemonade and cookies are so delicious that I want to buy all of them. I hope you can give them away to whoever passes by your stand for me.” We thanked her and she walked away. We opened the envelope after she left and found a $100 bill in it.
Holding the envelope and the bill, we were so moved. It was just a random act of kindness by a total stranger that would make a little five-year-old boy’s wish come true. At the same time, she delivered that kindness to other strangers by offering them lemonade and cookies for free. She obviously did not do it for praise or recognition. She just did it out of the kindness of her heart. Contrary to what some may think, the positivity in this world really does outweigh the negativity. There are good people around us doing good deeds, asking for nothing back.

2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Fighting my unsteady vision, I pulled out my phone, only to find there was no service.

It had been about 2 hours since my fall when I heard the sound of several people.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Fighting my unsteady vision, I pulled out my phone, only to find there was no service. That was too bad. Now I noticed I’d landed in the canyon bottom about 20 feet from the river’s edge. My bag was lying not far from me. Gathering my strength, I dragged myself to the river to clean myself and then used some tree branches to create a spot of shade, knowing the temperature would climb above 100°F later on. With my injuries, there was no way I could get myself up and out of the canyon. I could do nothing but wait.
It had been about 2 hours since my fall when I heard the sound of several people. They were hikers. They must be the owners of the car. Then I spotted a family of three picking their way down the canyon wall. “Help!” I screamed. The father rushed to my side and I told him what had happened. Shortly after his wife and daughter arrived, the man turned and ran off to call for help. I was luckily rescued and sent to hospital for treatment. The lesson I drew from this lucky survival is that you should never ever hike alone to an unfamiliar destination.

【答案】参考范文:
After nearly two hours’ careful search, an amazing thing happened. Greg saw, across a field, the dog moving cautiously away. Upon seeing that, Ehlers’ face turned red, with excitement in the heart, as a deer jumping with joy. Obviously, it was full of nervousness and fear. Ehlers and Greg tried their best to coax Rosie and made it calm down. Eventually they succeeded in coaxing the animal to them. Its nervousness and fear were replaced with joy. It just started touching Ehlers’ face, which made him in a good mood at the moment.
Ehlers called Jeff and Lisa again and waited for their arrival. During that time, Ehlers and Greg played with Rosie. Just 25 minutes later, Jeff and Lisa arrived. Seeing them, Rosie barked and ran to them. They hugged Rosie with excitement. Touched deeply, Jeff and Lisa could never say thank you enough. And then they returned to Minnesota and became best friends. “It’s good to know there’s still some one out there who cares enough to go to that kind of trouble,” says Lisa of Ehlers’ rescue effort. “I figured whoever lost the dog was probably just as close to it as I am to my dogs,” says Ehlers. “If it had been my dog, I’d hope that somebody would be willing to go that extra mile.”

【答案】
Just when Lily was on the edge of giving up, she received a letter from her village. The letter, written by her mother, spoke of the village’s pride in her accomplishments and how her paintings had inspired many in the community. It reminded Lily of the joy she found in capturing the simple beauty of her surroundings. Tears welled up in her eyes as she realized that her roots were her greatest source of inspiration. The letter was a gentle reminder that her art was not just about success, but about expressing her love for the world she came from. With this renewed perspective, Lily felt a surge of motivation to continue creating.
With renewed determination, Lily returned to her canvas. She began to paint, not just with her hands but with her heart. The brushstrokes flowed effortlessly, capturing the essence of her village in vibrant hues. The empty canvas transformed into a masterpiece that spoke of peace, tranquility, and the power of perseverance. As she finished, Lily knew that she had not only created a piece of art, but also rediscovered her true purpose. She understood that her success was rooted in her love for her village and her unwavering belief in her talent.

【答案】
Apparently, several nurses had received criticism. They all felt very upset until one of them, or possibly one of my doctors, explained to the officer that the small animals were gifts from a very sick child- patient and that it not only made the patient smile to see them proudly wearing them on their badges, but it made the other patients smile as well. It was eventually decided that they could keep them hanging on their badges when they interacted with child- patients.
After that, I continued to make different animals with beads. And more nurses and doctors asked for the lovely presents. They kept hanging them on their badges when I saw them, which made the hospital full of smile. Soon I got recovered from the disease. I thought the story ended as I got released from the hospital but it turned out to be beyond my imagination. When I was visiting someone in the hospital about six months later, I was moved to see all of the nurses still had the bead animals hanging on their badges.

【答案】参考范文:
The first week before the next school year, I went to school and saw the math teacher. I greeted him and he nodded at me with a smile. He told me he would be my math teacher this term and asked me to check on the computer. So together we went to see what the status of the computer was. To my surprise, the computer was exactly where we had left it at the end of school. It hadn’t been moved a bit, as evidenced by the dust pattern around its boxes. We set it up in his new room and I was eager to continue my programming adventures.
Throughout that next school year, I was in the math teacher’s room whenever possible after school. I’d get so involved with programming experiments that he’d just tell me to make sure the door was locked and the lights were off when I left. Sometimes I’d stay until6:00 pm. He’d even let me program in class when I was supposed to be learning geometry. My experience with that computer directed me to get a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Mathematics when I went to college. But for the math teacher’s generosity, all this wouldn’t have happened.

【答案】
When I opened the door, I was astonished to see a fairly tidy room. My mom had obviously cleaned it herself. Thinking of the mess I deliberately made under the bed, I hurried to my bed and bent down to take a look. To my great surprise, the floor had been cleaned as well. All the paper balls had disappeared. A mixed feeling surged through my whole body. As I stood up and froze for a while, I noticed a note lying on my desk. Picking it up, I recognized my mom’s perfect handwriting at once:“ Dear Carole, I am critical of myself, and I have found that I have also been very critical of you lately. For that, I’m truly sorry. I just expect that you are to be your sweet self. Love, Mom.”
I read the note again and again, and felt a weight lifted from me. It was replaced by something as soft and comforting as Mom’s hug. I knew Mom still loved me the same way, and she cared about me even when she was over occupied by work all the days. Tears were streaming so fast that my vision was a bit unclear. Mom had said sorry to me, and I owed her the same. When she got home, I rushed to her and couldn’t wait to tell her all I had bottled up inside. Embarrassed, I soon found my brothers standing by and looking at me smilingly. On the couch, we sat side by side, sharing all the stories and feelings as the sun set.

【答案】范文
Knowing what I had to say, I calmed myself down and walked to the stage. I started speaking, even though my voice was a little shaky. I talked about how I’d acted without thinking and how sorry I was for hurting someone. When I finished my speech, I was sweating, and I wasn’t sure what the others would do. But they clapped for my honesty. Mrs. Julia even said I was brave for saying sorry in front of everyone. I went back to my seat and saw Lucy looking at me with tears in her eyes.
That day marked a turning point. Lucy and I didn’t talk about what had happened, but we started to talk and laugh together again, as if she had silently forgiven me. I wasn’t proud of what I did in that speech class; instead, I was grateful for the experience. It taught me some important lessons that I’ve kept with me: talking badly about others can lead to regret, and true friendships need to be built on honesty and openness.

【答案】
Finally, his turn came. Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack. He stood there tongue - tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was just smiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation. Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him.
When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine’s, her smile now a symbol of his journey to self - assurance. No longer defined by his stutter, Jack felt a sense of belonging. His presentation wasn’t just an assignment; it was a testament to his ability to overcome personal obstacles. As the room quieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter, knowing that he had made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
This situation changed when one day I came across an inspiring book. When I opened the cover and started reading, I felt like being hit hard on my head. I was attracted by the wonderful story and beautiful writing as if I was in the world presented by the author. Although I discovered the characters in the book faced severe survival challenges, they still struggled to live in hardship and fight for their dreams. This spirit deeply inspired me, allowing me to gradually regain my confidence in the future. Now I carry this book with me either at the dining table or during school breaks. I absorb myself in it, feeling the joy and sorrow, love and hate in the book.
However, when I look around, I find that many people have not been as lucky to find pleasure in reading. They gradually moved away from reading, either due to school pressure or the attraction of the virtual world. Some parents have misunderstandings about reading, believing that reading books unrelated to schoolwork will delay children’s studies. I want to say that reading can help us learn new knowledge, better understand human nature and other people, love life more, and become mature and wise. Why should we ever to choose to ignore reading? Finally, I would like to appeal to my peers to protect our eyes and minds, and make wise choices between books and screens.

【答案】One possible version:
Just then, a refreshing pleasant smell blossomed out. Boss Kende froze for a moment! When the tea was done, Boss Kende cleaned the teapot and cups, added some tea, and poured hot water in. Then he carefully poured some of the tea into two cups. The liquid was clear, with an amazing smell. “Son, come and have a taste!” Then, they both picked up the cups, and took a sip. “Terrific! The tea tasted nothing like any of the previous. But why?” The son looked at his father in astonishment. “I think it’s because the leaves were bitten by the insects,” Boss Kende’s voice trembled with excitement.
“Sometimes, what appears bad is not really bad,” Kende smiled after tasting the tea with his son. “A bad thing can turn good if dealt with well. Tea making is just like life; it mirrors how one should conduct oneself in the world. You should always stand with others when you think and act. You are bound to gain something valuable from it.” “Yes, father, I will keep that in mind.” The young man’s face turned slightly red and he was touched. The father and son drank tea together surrounded by the fragrance of tea all around them.

My heart skipped a beat as panic surged through me. But I was not a good swimmer, so I dared not go into the water to save Margie, just stoping on the bank anxiously. Just then, Onyx, sensing Margie's danger, immediately swam closer to her, barking and nudging her leg gently with her nose. With remarkable agility, Onyx supported Margie, allowing her to rest her weight on the dog while she massaged her cramped leg.
Onyx's quick thinking and unwavering loyalty had saved Margie from a potentially dangerous situation. With tears of gratitude in my eyes, I hugged Onyx tightly again and again, realizing that she truly was our hero in every sense of the word. Onyx raised his head and wagged his tail, apparently feeling honored for her bravery. From then on, Every time Magi went swimming, she took Onyx with her. We were certainly relieved to have Onyx by her side.

I started the car and my family started to fight against the mosquitoes. Jeannie began methodically clapping the mosquitoes between her hands. Amy took charge of the back seat crew and attacked the mosquitoes happily. Jennifer also successfully trapped some with her hat. Jon laughed, determined to keep up with his sisters. Jeannie began announcing each one she vanquished. “One, two, three, ” she counted off. The kids joined in, the number of victories growing rapidly. “Nine, ten, eleven.”
As their voices of victory continued, I became totally alert. The effect was better than drinking a cup of coffee. “Fifteen!”Clap. “Sixteen!” I laughed at how excited they had become. Only at 39, when the last mosquito was taken care of, did things settle down. By the time I pulled into our driveway, Jeannie and the kids were sound asleep again, the car blissfully silent. I paused for a moment to reflect on the last leg of the trip and smiled.

【答案】
“How can we get Prince out from beneath the stage?” Mrs. Alvarez asked. Meanwhile, the audience began to whisper and someone even stretched their necks. Mrs. Alvarez and some girls tried to call Prince’s name, but there was no response. Worried about my little friend and our performance, I visually measured the room under the stage and thought of my size. “Maybe I can get him out. I’m small enough.” My words suddenly cut through the constant calling of “Prince”.
Having no other ideas, Mrs. Alvarez nodded to me. So I crawled inch by inch until I found Prince curled up like a ball. I raised my hand, saying, “It s me, Prince. Come here.” Luckily, Prince recognized me and nuzzled my fingers. When we came out, I knew it was time to say my last line, “Yes, I am the small elf who can bring good luck!” With thunderous applause hovering over the hall, I saw Mum in the audience, my eyes beaming with joy. She winked at me as if to say, “Look, being small has its advantage, right?”

The race began, and Fudge set a fast but steady pace. The other dogs followed him closely, and the team worked together smoothly. Fudge was determined and focused, and he led the team through the difficult terrain. Susie was proud of Fudge’s performance and cheered him on. As the race progressed, the team gained momentum and started to overtake other teams. In the end, they crossed the finish line and won the race. Susie was overjoyed and hugged Fudge tightly. She knew that Fudge had exceeded her expectations and proved that size didn’t matter. From then on, Fudge became the star of the team.

【答案】范文
Ed lifted his rocket and approached to the launch arca. Tom watched as Ed carefully placed his rocket on the launch pad making sure everything was in place. As Ed stepped back and prepared to push the button, Tom’s hear raced. He knew that the loose fin could cause the rocket to veer, off course, potentially causing it to crash. He couldn’t bear the thought of Ed losing because of a simple mistake that he had noticed but hadn’t mentioned. In a split second decision, Tom called out to Ed, warning him about the loose fin. Ed quickly checked his rocket and fixed the fin just in time. The rocket soared into the sky, reaching an amazing height.
The figure of 1150 feet came as a shock to Tom. He had been so sure that his rocket would be the highest, but Ed’s rocket had surpassed his by fifty feet. Tom felt a mix of emotions — disappointment a not winning, but also a sense of pride for doing the right thing by helping Ed. As the crowd cheered for Ed’s victory, Ed excitedly ran towards Tom and hugged him tightly, tears of gratitude streaming down. At that moment, Tom realized that winning wasn’t everything. He had gained something much more valuable-the respect of his peers and the satisfaction of knowing he had helped someone else succeed. From that day on, Tom made a promise to himself to always be a good sport, whether he won or lost.

I was about to tell her that they weren’t good when I suddenly came up with an idea. I was determined to teach her a lesson, so I asked her, “Are you sure this will be delicious?” Ruby nodded. “OK, pick some for yourself.” While Ruby was selecting the apples, I walked over to a pile of not-so-pretty but absolutely sweet apples and took a few, too. Seeing this, Ruby laughed at my speckled apples. “Yours are just not delicious,” I said with a smile. Ruby did not believe. When we got home that night, Ruby couldn’t wait to eat the apples.
After a few bites of both, she said to me, “Mom, the apple you chose is delicious.” I quickly responded, “You choose beautiful but not delicious, while I choose not beautiful but delicious. Apples have advantages and disadvantages, let alone people. You’re dark, but you’re tall. Think about it. Are you the tallest in your class? ” Ruby listened and$$
