Have students finish part A on page 40. The Qingming Scroll describes people’s lives in Bianjing in the 12th century, including scenes of rural life, the riverbanks, the splendid central bridge and life inside the city. The painting shows people from all walks of life and the atmosphere appears to be one of peace and happiness. Zhang Zeduan uses ink on silk. He creates realistic images and displays a remarkable mastery of perspective. His brushwork is so precise that the painting shows an enormous amount of detail. By showing the detail, the painting reveals a great deal about life during the Northern Song Dynasty. It tells us about the customs, clothing, transportation methods, business practices and architecture styles of that time. However, on closer inspection, it also exposes serious political and social problems. The painting greatly influenced Chinese art and inspired future artists. 2. Have students discuss the writing technique of this essay by answering the following questions. (1) Can you find the topic sentences of paragraphs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5? Para. 1: Zhang Zeduan’s Qingming Scroll is a masterwork of Chinese art. A topic sentence’s main purpose is to summarize the main idea of the paragraph. Additionally, it has other functions such as supporting the writing’s primary topic throughout the essay, as well as unifying the content of each paragraph. In each paragraph the topic sentence further enables readers to determine the subject and perspective of the paragraph. That’s why the topic sentence is usually placed at the beginning of the paragraph. In some cases, the topic sentence is also the transitional sentence, which makes the change of subject between two paragraphs smoother. For example, the topic sentence of paragraph 4 is also a transitional sentence, which indicates the subject changes from “an enormous amount of detail” (in the last sentence of paragraph 3) to “a comprehensive look at life during Northern Song Dynasty” (the subject of paragraph 4). 3. Have students finish part B on page 40. ● Making digital models of a gallery for online tours is commonplace nowadays. It can help museums protect vulnerable masterpieces, but the online tour benefits museum visitors too. It allows armchair tourists to make virtual visits to online galleries around the world, where digital models of museum pieces can be comfortably viewed while a variety of relevant information about the exhibits is available at the click of a button. ● Building underground exhibition halls may be necessary for delicate masterpieces and fragile artefacts.
