A
Here are four scientific discoveries from this year that could lead to new inventions.
Discovery 1 — To survive in the ocean, some animals essentially hide from the light itself, with transparent bodies that all but disappear from view, but it has one potential risk. The creatures’ eyes reflect light, creating a bit of shine that can give away their location to a predator (捕食者). Some shrimp and prawn larvae, however, have developed a way around this shortcoming. Their eyes are covered with a sheet of special glass that effectively matches their eyeshine to the color of surrounding water. In this way, the tiny crustaceans (甲壳类动物) can become invisible. This discovery might help researchers uncover ways to improve relative technologies in solar panels, remote sensing and communications.
Discovery 2 — Brown bears resist blood clots (血栓) despite their long, inactive periods during their winter sleep. To find out how they do it, scientists tracked down brown bears in Sweden. They discovered one protein showed a significant seasonal change, which could provide ways for preventive treatment in cancer patients and those recovering from surgery, who would be more likely to develop blood clots.
Discovery 3 — A caterpillar venom (毛虫毒液) contains an unusual, shape- shifting protein. When it reaches the outer surface of a cell, this protein forms into a doughnut- like shape, then makes a hole through the cell wall. By researching such nature, engineers could develop medicine delivery strategies that get drugs inside cells where they need to work, which will benefit cancer patients.
Discovery 4 — This year, scientists found two proteins in bowhead whales that could be linked to DNA repair, increasing the animals’ cancer resistance. The proteins called CIRBP and RPA2 were much more common in bowhead whales and played a role in this gene repair. As a scientist says, we probably have the solution to cancer medicine out there in nature already.
21. What can we know about the tiny crustaceans?
A. They can keep away from the light. B. They can perfectly hide themselves.
C. They can shine while reflecting light. D. They can be located by their predator.
22. Which discovery might improve the way doctors use cancer drugs?
A. Discovery 1. B. Discovery 2. C. Discovery 3. D. Discovery 4.
23. What do the four discoveries have in common?
A. They provide an excellent inspiration for innovation.
B. They might bring about a breakthrough in medicine.
C. They have awakened our environmental awareness.
D. They are all concerned with endangered creatures.

A self-described “girly girl”, nine-year-old Zandra Cunningham was constantly begging her parents for the latest beauty products. One day her dad simply told her “no”, which inspired her to make her own.
Zandra has been recognized by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the youngest millionaires in America. When asked about her experience as a child entrepreneur (企业家), Zandra says, “It wasn’t frightening. When you’re young, you don’t have that fear mentality. ‘Maybe it’s not going to work’ never really crossed my mind.” For Zandra, it became a challenge to separate her personal interest from what her customers actually wanted. “There were a lot of things that I felt were good ideas, but they wouldn’t fit into the market,” she says. Being part of the market herself, Zandra felt she had a unique perspective that allowed her to truly listen and respond to her customers.
It started as a hobby for Zandra and her mom. They’d play around with different ingredients until they found formulas they liked “through trial and error”. Slowly, they started transforming the pastime into a brand. Zandra began selling her products at local markets, and a few years later—when Zandra was 12 years old — the family started a shop for Zandra Beauty. At the time, Zandra Beauty was one of the first brands to offer plant-based and organic beauty products at an affordable price. The 21-year-old has essentially grown up alongside her brand—but her goals have remained the same: “Our main focus is to push out amazing products that are safe for everyone and the earth.”
“There’re so many brands doing similar things, but there’s still so much room to grow,” says Zandra. “Your customers are out there, and you just have to find something that’s going to set you apart.”
24. What can be inferred from Zandra’s words in paragraph 2?
A. Her young mind made her fearless.
B. Her parents supported her greatly.
C. She had much precious experience.
D. She was always very caring.
25. Which of the following is the most important in Zandra’s opinion?
A. Sharing her personal interests. B. The diversity of hobbies.
C. Changing the global market. D. The need of customers.
26. What kind of product does Zandra mainly pursue?
A. The one that is cheap and useful.
B. The one that is enjoyed by her mom.
C. The one that is created by trial and error.
D. The one that is reliable and eco-friendly.
27. What is Zandra’s attitude towards the future of her brand?
A. Hopeful. B. Concerned. C. Doubtful. D. Relieved.
A 25. D 26. D 27. A
When you’re young, you don’t have that fear mentality. ‘Maybe it’s not going to work’ never really crossed my mind.(这并不可怕。当你年轻的时候,你不会有那种恐惧的心态。我从来没有想过“也许这行不通”)”可知,从Zandra的话可以推出年轻的头脑使她无所畏惧。故选A项。
根据第二段中“For Zandra, it became a challenge to separate her personal interest from what her customers actually wanted. “There were a lot of things that I felt were good ideas, but they wouldn’t fit into the market,” she says. Being part of the market herself, Zandra felt she had a unique perspective that allowed her to truly listen and respond to her customers.(对Zandra来说,将她的个人兴趣与客户的实际需求区分开来是一项挑战。她说:“有很多东西我觉得是好主意,但它们不适合市场。”作为市场的一部分,Zandra觉得她有一个独特的视角,使她能够真正倾听和回应她的客户)”可知,Zandra认为自己觉得好的不一定适合市场,不能根据自己的个人兴趣来推断客户的实际需求,真正倾听和回应她的客户的需求才是最重要的。故选D项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“At the time, Zandra Beauty was one of the first brands to offer plant-based and organic beauty products at an affordable price. The 21-year-old has essentially grown up alongside her brand—but her goals have remained the same: “Our main focus is to push out amazing products that are safe for everyone and the earth.”(当时,赞德拉美容是第一个以可承受的价格提供植物性和有机美容产品的品牌之一。这位21岁的女孩基本上是和她的品牌一起成长的,但她的目标一直保持不变:“我们的主要重点是推出对每个人和地球都安全的神奇产品。”)”可知,Zandra的产品是植物性的有机美容产品,对每个人和地球都是安全的。所以她的产品主要追求产品的可靠和环保。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Zandra的话“There’re so many brands doing similar things, but there’s still so much room to grow(有很多品牌在做类似的事情,但仍有很大的发展空间)”和“Your customers are out there, and you just have to find something that’s going to set you apart.(你的客户就在那里,你只需要找到能让你与众不同的东西)”可推知,Zandra认为自己的品牌仍然有很大的发展空间,对自己品牌的未来满怀希望。故选A项。
C
If you’ve ever waded into the ocean for a swim and suddenly realized that the shore is getting farther away, not closer, you may have encountered a rip current (离岸流). Common at beaches worldwide, these powerful currents flow from the shore toward the sea at speeds up to several feet per second.
It’s important to know what rip currents are and how to look for them, because they are a leading cause of drownings in the surf zone near shore. Rip currents can form in several ways. One type of rip current, known as a channel rip current, forms when there are gaps between breaking waves. As waves break, they push water toward the beach and raise the level of the water slightly. If waves break on a sandbar (沙洲), but not in a deeper channel that cuts through the sandbar, the extra water that the waves have pushed toward the beacon escapes back to the ocean through the channel. The darker corridor of the escaping water acts like a conveyor belt, moving water, unsuspecting swimmers and small marine organisms offshore.
Another type, known as a transient or flash rip current, forms when surf is choppy The edges of breaking waves push on the water and make it spin, like a fast ice skater crashing into someone.
Think of a rip current as a swift river cutting through the surf away from the shore. Swimming against the current is going to tire you out and put you at risk of drowning. Instead, swim parallel to the beach—think of heading for the “river banks”—until you are out of the rip current’s pull. Once you’re no longer fighting it, you can swim back to shore.
Rip currents aren’t just a safety issue. Scientists are beginning to better understand the crucial ecological role they play in the ocean. Many marine organisms, including oysters, barnacles, fish and coral, rely on ocean currents to find suitable habitats. These organisms swim up or down or attach to floating or sinking material and are transported by multiple ocean processes. Rip currents are a key mechanism for carrying larvae (幼体) to deeper waters or recalculating them in shallow waters. The type and behavior of the rip current may affect the movement of marine organisms.
28. What can we learn about channel rip currents according to the text?
A. They cause a bit huger waves than common currents.
B. They form around deeper channels in the ocean’s bottom.
C. They present visually as darker areas between breaking waves.
D. They are generated when two waves meet close to the shore.
29. What does the underlined word “transient” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Dangerous. B. Powerful. C. Slow-flowing. D. Short-lived.
30. What suggestion does the author give on escaping from a rip current?
A. Swimming with the current.
B. Avoiding swimming against the current.
C. Swimming under the current.
D. Avoiding floating with the current.
31. Why are rip currents important to the ocean ecology?
A. They redistribute small marine organisms.
B. They provide habitats for marine organisms.
C. They change the structure of marine ecosystems.
D. They bring nutrients from the ocean’s bottom to the surface.
C 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据第二段的“One type of rip current, known as a channel rip current, forms when there are gaps between breaking waves.(一种类型的离岸流,被称为通道离岸流,当破碎波之间存在间隙时形成)”及“The darker corridor of the escaping water acts like a conveyor belt, moving water, unsuspecting swimmers and small marine organisms offshore.(流出水的较暗色地带就像一条传送带,移动着水,不知情的游泳者和离岸的小型海洋生物)”可推知,channel rip currents在视觉上呈现为海浪裂口间较暗的区域。
根据第四段的第二句“Swimming against the current is going to tire you out and put you at risk of drowning.(逆流游泳会使你疲惫不堪,并使你有溺水的危险)”可推知,作者建议避免逆流而游,因为逆流而游会导致疲惫甚至溺水。
根据最后一段的“Rip currents are a key mechanism for carrying larvae (幼体) to deeper waters or recirculation them in shallow waters. The type and behavior of the rip current may affect the movement of marine organisms.(离岸流是将幼虫带到较深水域或在浅水中再循环的关键机制。离岸流的类型和行为可能影响海洋生物的运动)”可推知,离岸流可重新分配海洋微生物,故而对海洋生态具有重要作用。故选A。
D
Procrastination (拖延), we are often told, is the “thief of time”. It’s often the case that when I notice my days slipping away in some unplanned activity. I can’t help but feel a sense of loss for all I might have achieved and guilt for failing to prevent it.
However, this may only make it harder to break the habit, because procrastination is often a way of dealing with stress and self-criticism. If I feel anxious about writing a new chapter of my book, for example, I may choose to hide my head in the sand of social media rather than face the reality of a bad first draft. The lost time will only make poorer performance more likely, but it provides short-term relief from the anxiety I am facing. If we then beat ourselves up, it is only going to raise our levels of stress and anxiety, which may cause us to look for more relief in temporary distractions (消遣) - messing up our next task, too.
For this reason, psychologists suggest that practising greater self-compassion (自我同情) may be one way of reducing procrastination. Imagine you are talking to a friend in a similar situation. What kind of words of encouragement would you use?
You might also consider employing a little “strategic indulgence (放任)”. Let me give you an example. One of my main sources of time-wasting is funny YouTube videos, so I might decide to enjoy those for 10 minutes at 11 am, before returning to writing. Since it is a decision we’ve made, we don’t have the feelings of failure that come with our procrastination, so we are then less likely to fall into the cycle of being unproductive.
Research shows that students who procrastinate “intentionally” tend to have higher motivation and make better progress towards their goals, with less stress. In today’s busy culture, it is encouraging to see research that celebrates self-compassion and self-indulgence. The thief of time may be an unavoidable guest, but, with the right mindset, we can ensure its visits are short.
32. How does the author respond to his procrastination according to paragraph 1?
A. He regrets what he had done. B. He welcomes the extra free time.
C. He makes up his mind to avoid it. D. He completes tasks immediately.
33. What idea does the author mainly convey in paragraph 2?
A. The benefits of procrastination are often ignored.
B. Our bad performance leads to procrastination.
C. It is quite difficult to prevent procrastination.
D. The negative response leads to more harm.
34. What does the author suggest people do?
A. Watch videos to reduce stress.
B. Include procrastination in a schedule.
C. Talk to friends facing similar situations.
D. Ignore procrastination and improve productivity.
35. Which could be the best title for the text?
A. Managing Guilt in the Battle Against Procrastination
B. Regarding Procrastination as a Tool for Achieving Goals
C. How to Stop Procrastinating and Start Getting Things Done
D. What the Psychological Roots of Procrastination Are
A 33. D 34. B 35. C
根据第一段的“I can’t help but feel a sense of loss for all I might have achieved and guilt for failing to prevent it. (我不禁对我可能取得的一切感到失落,并为未能阻止它而感到内疚。)”可知,作者意识到自己拖延时会很愧疚后悔。故选A。
根据第二段中的“If we then beat ourselves up, it is only going to raise our levels of stress and anxiety, which may cause us to look for more relief in temporary distractions(消遣) - messing up our next task, too. (如果我们自责不已,只会增加我们的压力和焦虑水平,这可能会导致我们在暂时的消遣中寻求更多的缓解——也会打乱我们的下一个任务。)”可知,本段通过举例说明如果我们因为拖延就责备自己,只会增加我们的压力和焦虑水平,这可能会导致我们希望进一步放纵,也会弄糟我们的下一个任务。由此可知,对拖延的消极反应会带来更多坏处。故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“One of my main sources of time-wasting is funny YouTube videos, so I might decide to enjoy those for 10 minutes at 11 am, before returning to writing. Since it is a decision we’ve made, we don’t have the feelings of failure that come with our procrastination, so we are then less likely to fall into the cycle of being unproductive. (我浪费时间的主要来源之一是有趣的YouTube视频,所以我可能会决定在上午11点欣赏这些视频10分钟,然后再开始写作。由于这是我们做出的决定,我们不会有拖延带来的失败感,所以我们不太可能陷入低效的循环。)”可知,作者通过有计划地安排看YouTube视频的例子说明,作者建议将拖延列入计划中。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“However, this may only make it harder to break the habit, because procrastination is often a way of dealing with stress and self-criticism. (然而,这可能只会使打破这种习惯变得更加困难,因为拖延往往是应对压力和自我批评的一种方式。)”、第三段中的“For this reason, psychologists suggest that practising greater self-compassion (自我同情) may be one way of reducing procrastination. (因此,心理学家建议,练习更大的自我同情可能是减少拖延症的一种方法。)”、第四段中的“You might also consider employing a little “strategic indulgence (放任)”. (你也可以考虑采用一点“战略放纵”。)”可知,本文主要围绕拖延展开,并提出了减少拖延的两个方法——练习自我同情和战略放纵。由此可知,C项“如何停止拖延并完成工作”为文章最佳标题。故选C。

Many students study by reading their notes and textbooks over and over again. But studies show there are more effective ways to help you study smarter.
____36____
Many students know what they are expected to do. Yet many often fail to plan ahead. So they need first to set a reachable target. Break it into pieces and make them happen one by one. It may seem strange at first. But after two weeks or more, it becomes a normal thing.
Don’t just reread.

根据上文“Musicians practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. (音乐家练习他们的乐器。运动员练习运动技巧)”可知,空格处应表示学习也一样需要多练习。选项C“学习也一样需要练习”承接上文讲述练习对于学习的重要性。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a sunny morning, when Jessie sat at her desk in Mrs. Williamson’s class. They were learning about science, which Jessie normally enjoyed. However, a bird stayed outside the classroom window, which Jessie’s desk was right next to. So it caught much of Jessie’s attention.
“Jessie, are you listening?” Mrs. Williamson’s question cut in Jessie’s thoughts.
Jessie turned to her teacher. “What was that?” she asked.
The teacher frowned (皱眉), saying it was the second time that morning that she hadn’t been listening and that she was supposed to do better. Jessie’s face turned red, thinking Mrs. Williamson shouldn’t have said that to her. Jessie couldn’t help it if the bird by her desk was distracting (分心) her.
When the bell rang for a break, the teacher stopped Jessie. “I hope you will think about what I said in class,” she told her. “A rule is a rule. And it’s important for everyone to follow the rules.”
Jessie nodded to show she understood, but she didn’t really take it seriously, still thinking Mrs. Williamson was being too strict. Then she rushed outside to play ball games with other kids. They first picked teams and made the rules for the game. According to the rules, when a team got two outs, they had to go to the outfield (外场).
Jessie’s team was in the outfield first. In the game, she tried her best. Soon, the other team got two outs, and then it was Jessie’s turn to kick the ball.

Jessie went to Mrs. Williamson’s office.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Instead of giving Jessie’s team a chance to score, the other team quit. It made Jessie angry and she complained it was not fair. One of the players on the other team said they didn’t enjoy the game but Jessie thought that they had to keep on with the game, reminding them it was one of the rules and a rule is a rule. But as soon as she said the words, she remembered what happened in class. Mrs. Williamson had told her a rule is a rule, too. No wonder her teacher was so strict. Rules were important for everything to be fair.
Jessie went to Mrs. Williamson’s office. Seeing Jessie at the door, Mrs. Williamson was a little surprised. She found Jessie’s face flushed with shame. Jessie apologized and promised to follow the rules in class and she was going to do better from then on. Her teacher smiled warmly and hugged Jessie, saying, “I’m proud of you, Jessie. It is very brave of you to apologize.” Jessie smiled, too. She felt much better, and she understood that she needed to follow the class rules. After all, a rule is a rule!

A
Here are four scientific discoveries from this year that could lead to new inventions.

B Our bad performance leads to procrastination.
