(一)友谊
1.(2024·山东省联考高一月考)As soon as Harrison got home, he ran into his room. He sat down at his desk, took out a pen and a piece of paper from his bag, and began to write to Joe. Harrison started by introducing himself including his name, the school he attended, and his interests. He talked about how happy he was to find Joe's balloon and letter. He longed to be friends with Joe and hoped that they could stay in touch in the old but precious way because he believed that it would lead to a longlasting friendship.
A few weeks later, Harrison received a letter from Joe. Joe expressed his thanks to Harrison for valuing the letter in the balloon. He thought it would be treated as a trick. Joe told Harrison that, like him, he didn't have a lot of friends and often felt lonely. Joe hoped their friendship would inspire and motivate each other. Harrison believed that young people should open their hearts and create opportunities to make more likeminded friends. Finally, they became the best friends and brought happiness to each other.
2.Obviously, the cabin was quite tiny, so it was impossible to leave each other alone. Megan sat in one chair, trying to read and Elaine sat in another, singing song after song. When Elaine's dad noticed the strange atmosphere, he chose to figure out what had happened. He thought of the expression “too much of a good thing”, and explained that one piece of cake tastes delicious, but 10 is too much.
Thanks to the expression “too much of a good thing” from Elaine's dad, things got better. Elaine and Megan are still great friends. They realize that even best friends need to give each other some space when they need it. What's more, good friends need to show respect and patience. In this way, it will be easier to understand each other and maintain their friendship.
3.(2024·河南省鄢陵县第一高级中学高一阶段性检测)One day, Paul advised “Gayel, you should use the money to do something for yourself.” “Maybe I should use it to meet Kathy,” I joked, thinking it would take a very long time and couldn't really happen. I expected Paul to be against it, but he was all for it. “That's exactly what you should do,” he insisted, knowing how much this friendship meant to me. I struggled so much inside that I tossed and turned at night. But I finally made up my mind to visit Kathy, a friend I knew well but hadn't seen in years.
So I left Paul and the kids to travel 30 hours to reach Kathy. Of course I was nervous. We'd poured our hearts out to one another for decades but had never actually met face to face. My nerves disappeared the moment I stepped off the plane and spotted Kathy with her mother, sisters and a good friend, all waiting for me. “I'm finally here!” I choked as we hugged each other in tears. For the next 10 days, Kathy showed me the sights of Canada. As we said goodbye, I knew this wouldn't be the last time we saw each other. At that moment, I realized that even though we were separated by thousands of miles, our friendship remained, and I believed we would meet again!
4.The next morning when he arrived, he found the case had fallen. Brodie could hardly believe his eyes. The neck of the violin was broken. That was when the talent scout came into the room. “Your teacher tells me there is real talent here,” he said, looking around. “I'm looking forward to hearing you.” Again, it was Hollie Larson who played first. Brodie listened but seemed to hear nothing. He saw that the talent scout smiled and whispered something to Miss Samson. When it was Brodie's turn, Brodie lowered his head and explained his situation, overwhelmed by a wave of sadness.
Suddenly, Hollie Larson walked toward him, holding out her violin—“Use mine,” she said. Brodie was stunned. Hollie really longed to win, but now she was offering him a chance. He had thought it was she who damaged his violin! He shook his head, but she insisted. “If you can't play, that's not a real win.” Casting a grateful glance at her, Brodie took over the violin. While playing, he felt his inner world coming back to peace. The talent scout was on his feet, smiling and clapping. So Brodie won the selection and was to play the violin in Mr Spy. Hollie didn't win, but she and Brodie became true friends.

1.First, he made advertisements. Then, he put them up in the neighborhood. Attracted, some parents invited him home. After an interview, they were content with Andy's teaching ability and hired him. Thus, Andy's schedule became so tight that he often didn't get home until dinnertime. Andy kept it a secret from his mom. Finally, he was amazed he earned enough money. He immediately bought a hearing aid for his mother and studied the instructions.
One morning when Mary was still sleeping soundly, Andy put the hearing aid in her ear. Mary awoke to the sounds of birds' singing and car horns. “Morning, Mom,” Andy said. Mary turned, finding Andy was sitting nearby, smiling. “Is there a hearing aid?” she asked in disbelief. Andy nodded and asked, “How does it feel?” Mary replied that it was incredible, with tears rolling down her cheeks. She was relieved that her son loved her so much.
2.(2024·山东省德州市齐河县第一中学高二月考)“Woah, happy birthday, boy!” Martin said, sitting down next to Dylan. With kindness in his heart, he asked patiently in a soft voice to get to know the intention of the little boy who only got $28. Immediately Martin took him outside to purchase some fresh cooking materials for the big meal which was prepared for Dylan's mother. Dylan was thankful to express his gratitude by giving all his money to the food truck owner.
The next morning, Eve woke up to find a food truck outside her house. “Hello! It's Martin.” Opening the door, confused with all the delicious food in the food truck, Eve couldn't believe her eyes and felt like a dream. “It was your son Dylan who prepared all the food for you. Enjoy it.” With a man's voice appearing, she knew it was real. Touched by these words, Eve burst into tears. They sat together and enjoyed the meal, surprised to discover a note with $28 under a plate reading “Filial piety is priceless.”
3.However, Marquez knew what had to be done. “I don't think I want to play ball anymore,” he announced. “I want to do something else.” The family stood confused. “Like what, son?” his father said, breaking the silence. “Cheerleading,” Marquez replied. Nervous, unbelievable laughter followed that word. They thought he was joking. “That's what I really want to do.” Marquez said in a voice that came out louder than expected. When they saw he was serious, they were quiet.
Over the next few weeks, his family began to understand and support him for the big event. Over weeks of training, he could see that he was improving with practice. Maybe he even stood a shot at making the competition. A week later, it was time for the competition. From the sidelines, dad, mom and Reggie cheered Marquez on. As the music played, he hit every beat the best he could. The following Monday, results for the competition were posted. Marquez saw his name at the top of the list. He made it—of course he did. This time, he felt proud of himself.
4.(2024·广东省肇庆鼎湖中学高二月考)“Then maybe think of a compromise,” suggested Gran. But I sobbed uncontrollably and couldn't say a word. “Well, if you could let me go with you, I'd say yes,” My mom added. I wasn't fond of my mom hanging around like a bodyguard, but to get to the party I had to compromise. “I suppose your mother won't disturb your party, will she?” Gran looked at Mom with a kind smile. “Well, I promise I won't.” Mom finally gave in to me. My mood gradually improved. I ran to my grandmother and gave her a big hug. I was looking forward to the wonderful party desperately.
The longawaited beach party finally came. I made it at the beach with my mom. Under a tree near the destination, Mom stopped suddenly, taking out a red mat to sit on and signaling to me to join my friends. I rushed for the crowd. Joyful and excited, we sang, danced and chatted. Occasionally, the red mat in the near distance caught my eyes. Mom held a book, leaning against the tree. The moment my eyes fell on her, a wave of appreciation surged through me. It became dark when the party was over. I said goodbye to my friends and turned to Mom. Under the tree sat Mom waiting patiently. Tears of happiness blurring my eyes, I took her hand tightly, heading home.

1.(2024·山东省菏泽市郓城县第一中学高一月考)That day after Jenny came back home from school, she went to her father. She was no longer upset. She told her father that she had decided to find a job to make money. “Good,” said her father. Jenny started to look for parttime work on the Internet. Luckily, some families in the neighborhood were looking for parttime workers. One old couple needed someone to cut the grass. A young couple needed someone to look after their baby. Jenny called the families and she was offered the jobs.
Jenny started to work parttime. First she cut the grass for the old couple. And then she looked after the baby for the young couple. She kept doing other parttime jobs. Three months later, Jenny had enough money for a cell phone. She went downtown. But she didn't buy a cell phone. Instead, she bought a birthday gift for her father because it was her father's birthday the following day. She thought the gift was very meaningful and her father might be happy because she bought it with her own money.
2.Needing to be involved, I ran upstairs and grabbed my favorite stuffed animals. Very happy, my sister also took her own stuffed animals down to help. Thinking the stuffed animals as her classmates, my mother practiced the presentation again and again. Gradually, she became more fluent and more confident. My mother gained the associate degree that she wanted eventually. My mother took care of us as before and tried her best to learn more knowledge she needed.
One day when I was seven, my mother decided to apply for nursing degree. Once again, stuffed animals became useful. My sister and I sat aside and watched my mother preparing for her nursing degree. She gained her degree more easily than before. Willing to help others, my mother devoted herself to her career which she had pursued for a long time. My mother received recognition from many people. Now, under the influence of my mother, the hero of my life, I also become a nurse.

4.Seeing that Steve was eager for the set, Mrs Thomas came up with an idea. She bent over and winked at the boy, saying that he could help her out at the shop after school for the next two weeks and in exchange he could have the set for $10. At the thought that his dream would come true soon, he was overwhelmed with excitement. In the following two weeks, Steve rushed to the store after school, helping sort out the goods and offer valuable advice to customers, which satisfied Mrs Thomas a lot. Finally the last day came! Mrs Thomas announced as she had promised, “Boy, you have done an excellent job. Now go to get your payment.”
With her permission, Steve rushed to the new football set excitedly. Holding the set carefully with both hands, he couldn't help dreaming about the coming football match. A broad smile spread across his face. To show his gratitude, Steve bowed to Mrs Thomas, without whose help he couldn't have afforded the precious set. Then he went back home happily and shared this amazing experience with his parents, who felt so proud and gave him a thumb-up. What Mrs Thomas and his parents gave him was not only support and sports equipment, but a valuable lesson about independence.

1.Then Catherine spotted Landy seating alone in a corner. She ducked her head with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It's high time to do something for a change.” Catherine thought to herself. Having made up her mind, she urged the rest cool kids to make peace with Landy. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, no matter what they said. “Landy, sorry about the spaghetti thing. I should have realized it earlier. Can you forgive us?” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also learned that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.
2.(2024·湖南省雅礼中学高二期中)Emma sprang to her feet, “Let's hold a bake sale to raise funds!” Everyone's face lit up with pleasure and they all nodded in agreement. With respective tasks, the children and parents got down to the preparation. Emma's father made a huge banner reading “Saving the Playground”, while Leo's mom occupied herself with paperwork needed to issue a permit for the sale. Meanwhile, kids worked jointly to design and hand out the leaflets. Eventually, the big day came. Almost every family in their community contributed their delicious homemade treats. That Sunday morning, the aroma of freshly baked cookies and cakes filled the air as people lined up to support the cause. Being a tremendous success, the sale in the farmer's market went for another 2 months.
Their hard work paid off. As news of their efforts spread, local businesses started pitching in. The hardware store donated paint and materials, while the gardening center provided plants and flowers. The children worked tirelessly, transforming the wornout playground into a vibrant and inviting space once again. On the day of reopening, the children organized a community celebration, inviting everyone who had contributed to the project to share the joy. The children of Meadowville taught the world that with determination, unity, and a little bit of fundraising, anything is possible. The playground stood as a testament to their resilience and the power of their youthful spirits, reminding everyone that dreams can be achieved when hearts come together.
3.The following Monday, Steve arrived at school earlier than usual because Miss White would give a quiz on the weekend homework. When the class bell rang, Miss White handed out the test papers. At first, Steve was so nervous that his throat was dry, and his palms were sweating. But when he saw the smile on her face, his heart was full of courage again. Steve began to focus on doing it. Time went by quickly, and it was time to hand in the test papers. To Miss White's surprise, Steve was the first to hand in his paper.
After Miss White checked Steve's test paper, she was in total shock! She found Steve finished all the questions and passed the test for the first time. She couldn't wait to share the good news with Steve. When seeing the score on his paper, Steve couldn't believe his eyes. He was wild with joy, tears of delight rolling down his cheeks. From that moment, nothing was the same for Steve. His grades got better and better and he was gradually willing to play with his classmates. It was Miss White's care that made him confident in himself.
4.(2024·广东省江门市鹤山市第一中学高二阶段考试)Upon arriving home, I told my grandpa what had happened. A look of anxiety flashed across his face, his eyebrows knitted into a deep frown. I could see him struggling with the decision, knowing how much the jacket meant to me but also aware of our financial limitations. After a long silence, he said in a firm voice, “Martha, it's not just a jacket; it's a symbol of your hard work.” He reached into an old tin can he kept hidden under his bed, pulling out a few crumpled bills and some coins. “Take this,” he placed the money in my hand. “You deserve that jacket more than anyone.”
The next day, the principal called me to his office. As I entered, I noticed his expression, a mixture of guilt and embarrassment. “Martha,” he began, “I need to apologize.” He paused, looking down at his desk before continuing, “Your history teacher, Mr Frank, made a convincing argument about the unfairness of the situation. The Board agreed; the jacket should be awarded based on one's academic performance, not on one's ability to pay.” Relief and joy washed over me. My hard work hadn't been in vain, and my grandfather's sacrifice wasn't needed. The scholarship jacket was truly mine, a symbol of my perseverance and the unyielding support of my family.

1.(2024·青海省西宁市大通高一阶段练习)The postman went to houses to deliver mails during the New Year celebrations. When he thought about the little girl, he started thinking it wouldn't be right to meet her emptyhanded during the festival. After much thought he bought a small box of chocolates. The next day, he went to her house and knocked, waiting for a while as usual. When the girl opened the door, the old postman handed her the chocolates and said, “Take this small gift from your uncle's side.” She was happy to get that and asked the postman to wait for some time.
After a while, she brought a big box and handed it to the postman. She said, “Uncle, this is a gift from my side to you.” The postman was surprised to see the box which was decorated with red ribbon. After thinking for a minute, he said, “You are like a daughter to me. How can I accept a gift from you?” The girl insisted, “Please don't refuse my gift.” The postman kept the box and lovingly put his hand on the girl's head. After going home, when he opened the box, the postman found a pair of shoes in it.
2.Sheila looked up at him in surprise. “Are you sure?” “One hundred percent, you're up to the task.” Sheila moved in with Frank. The children didn't have living grandparents and were delighted to have Sheila in their lives. When the local art community discovered what had happened to Sheila, they got together to hold a fundraiser for her. Frank immediately offered his gallery as the venue. And Sheila's disease gradually recovered.
One day, Sheila called Frank into her room to show him something. In the corner stood a painting. Frank felt very surprised at the painting and said, “How did you do it?” Sheila said,“Now I'm back on my medicine. There are days when the shivers aren't that bad. A few weeks ago, I decided to try painting again and see how it goes.” Sheila lifted the painting and held it out to Frank. “It's not my best work, but I hope you'll accept this as my gratitude.”
3.(2024·云南省宣威市东升实验中学高一月考)Then Mrs Kader appeared again, with a new bicycle. It was a brand new black bicycle which I had been looking forward to owning someday. “This is for those who are in need. Therefore, it's for you!” she said with a smile, explaining that she was impressed by my spirit of struggling for life whenever she saw my rushing figure. Mrs Kader put her arms around me, gave me a gentle hug and said, “My boy, you deserve it.” Hearing that, I was shocked and more than appreciative for her generosity and kindness. I didn't even realize that my eyes had welled up.
I bowed to Mrs Kader gratefully and left for school. I did not have to walk or run in a rush every day—I had the bicycle, which really made my life much easier afterwards. With the incredible bicycle, I could deliver my papers more effectively, thus having more time left for my studies. Even after many years, I still kept this bike in good condition. It witnessed my journey to my new life, and more significantly, it reminded me of a kindhearted gesture from a stranger.
4.I rushed out of the house, waving my hands. “What are you doing out in this weather?” I asked as we hugged. Sister Esther said she called my office and knew I wasn't working there anymore, so she came to see me. I gave her a warm welcome and led her into my room. Upon arriving, she told me urgently, “Hearing the news that you were fired from the work, I felt greatly worried. I know you are raising a big family and bearing great financial pressure. So I come here and give the gifts for you and Kristil.” She said as she kissed me on the cheek. While saying, she handed me a big package and a Christmas card.
Into the package placed a doll and a large envelope. I tore the envelope carefully and hundred-dollar bills poured onto the floor. Tears of gratitude puddled in my eyes as I picked up the precious gift, which could help me get through the tough time and buy the Christmas tree that I promised to give to my daughter. Feeling gratitude, I hugged Sister Esther tightly and thanked her sincerely.

1.One day, the ballet teacher in her school was late. Melanie was asked to keep an eye on the girls so that they would behave themselves. Once inside the ballet room, all her old memories flooded back, she couldn't control herself anymore. She started off by teaching some steps to the girls and then carried on dancing herself for some time. Unaware of the time and the people around her, Melanie was lost in her own little dancing world.
“What a perfect dance, Melanie! You are a true ballerina!” said the ballet trainer entering the classroom. Hearing her voice, Melanie stopped dancing. She was embarrassed to see the teacher in front of her and was at a loss for words. This was the first time that someone had said she was a wonderful dancer. Then the teacher, who was shocked to see Melanie's amazing skills, asked Melanie to visit a dance trainer with her. There has been no looking back for Melanie since then. Today, Melanie is a world-famous ballet dancer.
2.(2024·河南省名校联考高二月考)Still, I watched for any signs of an outburst of anger. But he didn't show any signs of an explosion. Instead, his face softened and he was starting to look entertained. It seemed that my father enjoyed the woman's singing comfortably and calmly. Then, he closed his eyes, too. His head nodded with the melody, and his body was in a relaxing position in his chair. When her song ended, my dad was still looking at her. “That's beautiful,” he said.
The woman smiled and said, “Thank you.” Maybe she seldom got others' praise, for she was a little excited and moved. It was surprising that I had hardly heard my father praise others since he got Alzheimer's disease. But perhaps this is the power of music. Music makes him calm and quiet. The woman's fantastic singing clears all his sufferings away. It is likely to arouse my father's deep memory and helps him recall some good time. People always like beautiful things, even Alzheimer’s patients have no exception.
3.After the photos were printed, I tried to find the photo “ruined” by the woman. However, it turned out that my unwilling touch led to a perfect picture. Actually, it was exactly the woman's presence that made the image come to life and breathe. I loved the picture so much that I put it in a frame and sent it to a photography contest. To my surprise, this picture was thought highly of by some professional photographers too. Several days later, I received a letter saying that I got the first prize in the photography contest.
Now this photo hangs on a wall in my study. I hung it there not only because it is my favorite picture, but also it can be a reminder. For one thing, it can be a reminder for me to be patient when meeting with something annoying. For another, I want to remind myself that we all live in the same space and share a common desire for beauty. If we can try to understand others, we can build a closer bonding and live in harmony with each other. Then we might be rewarded in unexpected ways though we expect nothing in return.
4.(2024·山西省大同市浑源县第七中学高二月考)“Are you busking (街头卖艺), Tiegan?” Mrs Maudslay asked. “No. I'm just playing and singing,” answered Tiegan. “I think the man must have mistaken me as a street performer, because I have my hat out there. It is really funny,” Tiegan added. She hadn't meant to start a new job, but since her hat was already out, she decided to keep singing. Soon enough, people walked past and stopped to listen. When they were ready to move on, they dropped some money into her hat.
By the end of the afternoon, Tiegan's hat was full. Tiegan felt happy, because she not only got a lot of unexpected dollars, but also proved that her songs were recognized by people. Singing didn't feel like work to her, but it was certainly a good way to earn money. It suddenly occurred to her that with this money, she could take Mom and Dad out for ice cream just as soon as Dad was feeling better. After all, her singing had disturbed the peace of their home for so long.

1.(2024·江西省上饶市蓝天教育集团高二期中)This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations. We met every day and practiced passing and kicking the football. At first, some complained that even the hardest practice couldn't change the fact that they were the last. The whole team was covered by the sense of depression and failure. What I could do at that time was to company them and try to cheer them up. Encouraged by my persistence, the team gathered the spirit of trying again and practiced even harder. This time, we sweated out in the fields instead of being the audience, watching and cheering. Every inch of the field has seen the effort of my team.
Six months later, football season started. After suffering our failure on the spring practice field, we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. Finally, we faced the number one team in the state. I felt that it would be a victory for us even if we lost the game. But that wasn't what happened. My boys beat the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the greatest thrills of my life! From the game I learned a lot about how the attitude of the leader can influence the members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and encouraged them. I helped them to see themselves differently, and they built themselves into winners. Winners are made, not born.
2.The next day, Laura and her mother built a goal and made a training plan. Every night before dinner, they headed to an old car garage for one hour, where Laura practised moving the ball by dodging around old tyres, pretending she was protecting the ball from the best players in the world. Her mother recorded everything secretly. When Laura's mother showed her the videos, she saw her mistakes carefully and corrected them.
One evening, Dequan, a boy from Laura's school and some other children saw Laura going about her routine and asked her what she was doing. “I'm practising moving the ball against imaginary defenders,” Laura responded. “Do you want to practise with me?” Dequan replied that he would, but he could not run fast enough. “Although I used to be so slow, my leg muscles have been strengthened through practices. If possible, I can teach you!” Laura said. Dequan happily agreed. Soon, more children joined them.
3.(2024·河南省开封市五县联考高一月考)However, when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. With the shot of the starting gun, I dashed out and ran as fast as I could, as if it were a 200meter race. Soon I was out of breath and slowed down. Other runners passed me one by one, and gradually I had no idea how many of them were still behind me. My legs were getting heavier and heavier, and I might fall down at any moment. Suddenly, I heard my classmates chanting my name. My deskmate even ran along the tracks beside me and cheered for me at the same time, just like the monthlong training we did together.
Despite the cheering of my classmates, I was almost the last to cross the finish line. In relief, I was so tired that I knelt down on the track, sweat streaming down my face. Immediately, my classmates rushed to me, held my arms, and urged me to walk on my feet and not to sit down. I was surrounded, with towels and all kinds of drinks handed to me. I felt a kind of warmth I had never felt before. That sports meet is an unforgettable experience, which gives me a lot of confidence, both confidence in my fellow students and confidence in my own potential.
4.Every time Kevin's team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line and they would give him the ball. Kevin skipped extra high as he went onto the court. His first shot bounced around but missed. The player from the other team swiped the ball and took it down to the other end, scoring two more points. At that moment, a clear tension and unease appeared on his face. But quickly he adjusted his mindset and got back into the game. As soon as Kevin's team had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who obediently stood in his place. But he missed again.
Kevin missed every chance with this pattern continuing a few more times, and the spectators finally figured out what was happening. Little by little people started to stand up and clap their hands. The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping, yelling and chanting, “Kevin! Kevin!” The whole world was stopped, waiting and wanting for Kevin. Finally, after an infinite amount of tries, the ball took one miraculous bounce and went in. Kevin's arms shot high into the air and he shouted, “I won! I won!” The clock ticked off the last few seconds and the first-place team remained undefeated. But on that evening, everyone left the game truly feeling like a winner.

1.“Got you!” I reached out my hand to sweep the nest away but I saw the baby bird, so lovely and so gentle. It was pink and helpless, flopping about in the nest. I thought of Goldie in her babyhood. How could I hurt that baby chick! So I started climbing again up back when I felt a soft, feathery bundle in a tiny crack next to me. “It's Goldie!” I forgot about being scared. I carefully stuffed her inside my shirt and managed to drag myself up to the top. I found her legs almost broken and eyes dull. Luckily, in the following weeks she grew stronger and stronger.
Then, this morning, Mum said to both me and Goldie, “Grandad's coming home.” Well, I was really pleased but worried too. With Goldie in my hands, I could feel her heart going pit-a-pit-a-pat. Soon, I heard Grandad coming down the garden. “My champion racer!” cried grandad. “Let her fly,” said Grandad, stroking Goldie's feathers. My stomach's doing back flips. I reluctantly tossed her up into the sky. She's flying. She flew as an arrow to join the other birds, sunshine glittering on her wings. “She's more beautiful,” Grandad laughed. So did I.
2.(2024·福建省厦门大学附属科技中学高二期中)Finally, it would let me get close. One day, as I sat quietly under the shade of a tree, the fox cautiously approached, its bright and soft eyes fixed on me. I held my breath, not wanting to startle the little creature. As it came closer, I could see the trust in its eyes, and I knew that it had got accustomed to my presence and that our bond had deepened. Over time, I was able to bring it food and even stroke its fur occasionally. It would huddle peacefully against me as we sat on the green grass, like two old friends. And just like what I'd do to an old friend who seemed to need help, I took it home, thinking I could better take care of it and we could better enjoy each other's company.
To my surprise, the day after I took it home, it fled. It jumped out of an open window and in no time vanished into the woods. As I watched it slip away, with a nimbleness and grace that was a joy to behold, darting through the underbrush with a fluidity that spoke of its wild nature, I suddenly realized that perhaps the wild called to it more strongly than I ever could. I should never have tried to keep it as a tame pet, because wild creatures were supposed to be roaming in their own home, rather than being confined in mine. I didn't see it then—not even with the help of that book about foxes, but now, on looking back, I know that my selfacclaimed “love” for it was not love at all, but possession.
3.I grabbed the signs and rushed out. I was incredibly sad and worried about our dog. Carrying the signs made by my mother, I was busy posting them along our street as well as along the surrounding streets. In the meantime, whenever there were people passing by, I would ask if they had met such a dog. Nobody claimed to have spotted our dog. Tears of regret welled up in my eyes. As the darkness fell, I decided to come back home to check if anybody had called.
When I returned, my mother was waiting for me, smiling broadly. There, behind my mother, was our lovely dog looking up at me eagerly. Upon seeing me, it raced towards me. I couldn't hold my tears. “It just came back by itself,” my mother said gently. Hugging the dog with relief, I apologized to my mother sincerely. “I am sure you have learned your lesson today,” my mother replied in a comforting voice. It was on the day that I learned the value of responsibility.
4.(2024·广东省惠州市惠阳区泰雅实验学校高二月考)Upon hearing the noise, Allen's mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened. “Mary, she's ... she's gone,” Allen sighed sadly with disappointment. “Don't worry, honey,” said his mother, trying to convey comfort and confidence. “Let's move together and find Mary. Six years of companion has established a close bond between both of you. She will definitely come back to her family.” Allen's mother then kissed him fondly on the forehead and helped him back up from the floor. Hand in hand, they made their way downstairs and to the front door.
Filled with anticipation, Allen and his mother went outside to look for Mary. They called out Mary's name, even imitating bird sounds as they walked down the street. They scanned their way down one block after another—eventually they found themselves at the entrance of the park Allen and Mary had been to multiple times. Amazingly, it was Mary that was perching atop of the bench where Allen always liked to sit in the time of sorrow and loneliness. At the sight of Allen, Mary unhesitatingly spread her wings and flew, chirping all the way, into Allen's cupped hands. His mother was right after all: Mary always found her way back to Allen's heart.

1.(2024·吉林省长春市第五中学高一第一学程考试)Bushong decided to have a try. She filled a small basket with some of Hank's favourite things. She called it Hank's Party Pack. With the help of volunteers from Casey Trees, they used special equipment and shot a sandbag attached to a rope high into the tree. They got luck on the first try. The rope caught a branch directly above Hank. Pulling on the other end of the rope, they positioned Hank's Party Pack just beneath him. To their great delight, he jumped in.
Carefully, they lowered Hank down. Once Hank reached the ground, Bushong took Hank into her arms, hugging him hard. Afterward, they went inside and ate, and Hank rested in his favourite chair. Hank's adventure taught Bushong a lesson about neighbors helping neighbors. “I can't believe so many people went out of their way to help me with this cat,” she said, “It made me feel good that I live in a neighborhood where people would do whatever they could to get him down. It gave me hope.”
2.Maggie and Alex tell their neighbors about their project. Their neighbors get very excited. Whenever they have free time after work or on the weekends, all the neighbors go up to the roof. They enjoy the sun and help take care of the plants in the garden. They all cooperate, and by working together, they soon have a big, beautiful vegetable garden!
Now the roof looks beautiful like a garden. They spend time in their community garden, enjoy the sun, and create much less garbage. In fact, they even save money because they do not have to buy so much packaged food. The garden is a real success, and the building in the center of the city is a much nicer place to live because of it. All of the neighbors safeguard their environment and improve it for themselves and for each other.

That's very kind of you.” Then my sister and brother got into Valerie's car on the freezing cold day. After expressing their thanks to Valerie, they greeted John with a smile. After a while, a faint flush rose to my brother's cheeks because of the warm wind in the car, and my sister had a broad smile on her face. Seeing that, Valerie decided to continue the act from then on.
Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family. It just started with this small act of offering a ride, and afterwards the relationship between the two families gradually deepened. We kids have been close friends ends with John. Valerie and my mother also became very close. Valerie and her family tried to help us in other aspects, such as offering us warm clothes we were in urgent need of at that time. And my mother loved to cook Indian food for Valerie's family. We all believed that our friendship would last forever.
4.We found the new girl riding around on her bike. “Welcome, neighbor!” I said. I introduced Ollie and myself to her. “Hope you and your family like chocolate-chip cookies. We made these for you,” said Ollie.“That's so sweet!” the girl said, choosing a cookie and taking a bite. “I'm Gabriella.” Then she stopped chewing and made a funny face.“What did you put in the cookies except chocolate?” she asked. “Regular cookies are boring,” Ollie said.“I wanted them to taste like Abuela's hot chocolate, so I used a little chili powder.”“Oh, brother,” I sighed.
Ollie and I each took a cookie and had a bite. Ollie found he had put in too much chili powder and felt very embarrassed. However, Gabriella said no matter how strange these tasted, they were the best“welcome to the neighborhood” cookies she had ever had. The three of us laughed. After a little while, Abuela came outside to see how we were doing, and Gabriella's mom invited us all into their house for a snack. We had a good time that day.

1.“What happened?” she asked in surprise. The washerwoman pulled off her costume. The class was in amazement as they recognized this washerwoman as their class teacher. She told the class, “We wanted this test to be real, rather than a paper-based one. I dressed myself up as a woman in need of help and asked each of you in turn to help me.” “Ah, yes of course,” said the class in reply.
“However, only Maria passed the test,” the teacher said. Maria understood everything after the teacher's words. She was the only student who went out of her way and helped, not caring about how hard it would be or how dirty she would get in the process. Then the teacher honored Maria with a special medal for her excellent performance. All the children had learned one of the most important lessons. They now looked on every person in need as an opportunity, rather than a burden.
2.(2024·四川省射洪中学高二期中)One day, I met my cousin, who also had a large birthmark on his arm. Depressed and upset, I poured out all my recent experiences to him. “You should be confident and proud of your birthmarks!” he exclaimed. “It's a tough pill to swallow, but it's necessary medicine.” Looking at me straight in the eyes, he told me that he had also struggled to accept his birthmark, but now he saw it as a unique part of himself that made him stand out. “Just remember, what others see is what you want them to see.” His words struck a chord with me, and I realized that I had been too focused on the negative aspects of my birthmarks.
From then on, when I met people, I began to change myself. Instead of feeling embarrassed, I began to embrace my birthmarks and see them as a part of my identity. When people asked me about my birthmarks, I answered them with confidence, explaining that they were beautiful birthmarks passed down from my mother's family. Gradually, I learned to accept and love myself and I noticed that people around me began to appreciate and accept me as well. I no longer felt selfconscious about them. Instead, I felt empowered by them. My birthmarks were no longer a source of shame, but a symbol of beauty and confidence.
3.Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container. For a moment, just a moment, he managed a weak smile. Before I could say a word, he turned and walked back to his desk quietly. When I looked at his thin figure, a mixture of warmth and surprise swept over me. “Maybe I was wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I said to myself. After school, I took our collected money to the school headteacher.
When the headteacher passed me the list, I discovered Willard's family was on the top. So surprised was I that I couldn't help sharing with the headteacher what the boy had done. The headteacher gave a thumbs-up with a satisfied smile, nodding his head slightly. A sense of contentment spread over my face. What impressed me most was that a boy of a poor family was still willing to help others. It seemed hopeful to develop a friendly relationship with him. Being poor is not our fault but being helpful is a good virtue and a choice.
4.(2024·海南省琼海市嘉积中学高二月考)There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. Then to my horror, I caught sight of Forrest's yellow sleeper. Brigitte was bravely doing her best to keep him afloat by holding on to his sleeper with her mouth. At the same time, she was desperately trying to swim to the shallow end. Only then did I realize that Forrest had somehow opened the door, wandered out and fallen into the pool. In a split second, I dove in, lifted my precious baby out and carried him outside. Hands shaking, I called 911 and we were rushed to the hospital immediately, where the doctor kept him for observation for one night.
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. Back home, once Brigitte saw him, she barked with apparent joy and wouldn't let Forrest out of her sight. In time she settled down, but remained dedicated to Forrest and followed him everywhere, concerned about his safety. Even when Forrest was asleep, Brigitte crammed herself under the crib, keeping a vigil. Our dog was indeed an angel, erasing any despair I might have had about losing our home. A house could always be replaced, but knowing we had each other around was the greatest blessing of all. I was grateful she was part of our lives, who I would never give up.
