Catherine's nineyearold son, Chirag, won his first silver prize at a swim meet. It seemed like he could swim before he could walk. His dad is a competitive swimmer and a former champion, so many people think it is surely in his genes. That's wrong! Until a few years ago, Chirag was afraid of water. It wasn't his fault. His dislike came from Catherine's childhood phobia (恐惧症). One summer when Catherine was a child, she and her brother went to a pool to learn basic swimming skills. All that went well and soon it was time for class. A coach was hired and he agreed to do a trial round. He took children to the deep end and asked them to swim across the breadth of the pool. While Catherine's brother stayed calm and made it, she, however, immediately disliked the task. It was Catherine's first time in such deep water, and the bottom of the pool seemed so far away that she felt really frightened. She felt she was going to drown (淹死) for lack of air. At that moment, she thought that swimming wasn't for her. After being rescued from the water, she didn't swim again. Fast forward to her thirties, she was a mother of a child and living in an area with a lot of rivers and beaches. Then her son, Chirag, started school, and swimming was a compulsory course. Every Wednesday, the day for the weekly swimming lesson was Chirag's bad dream. From the previous evening, he would be anxious and tearyeyed about going to school. It turned out that Catherine had passed on her anxiety about swimming to her little boy. She was always worried about keeping her child safe around water and was starting to realize that the best way to do that was making him learn how to swim. Words of comfort were of no use to Chirag. He still sat outside the pool during his classes. It was obvious that he needed professional lessons to help build his confidence. She needed to challenge herself to encourage her son. So Catherine signed up for swimming classes with her son. To Catherine's amazement, she didn't drown! 关键信息 when a few years ago what Catherine's nineyearold son, Chirag, was__anxious__about__swimming. Catherine signed up for swimming classes to encourage her son. who Chirag (小时候怕水,游泳课前紧张) ①Until a few years ago, Chirag was afraid of water. ②Chirag, started school, and swimming was a compulsory__course. ③From the previous evening, he would be anxious and tearyeyed about going to school. Catherine (怕水恐惧症,焦虑影响儿子,决心挑战自己) ①Fast forward to her thirties, she was a mother of a child. ②Catherine had passed on her__anxiety__about__swimming to her little boy. ③She realized that the best way to do that was making him learn how to swim. ④She needed to challenge herself to encourage__her__son. Dad (一名游泳运动员和前冠军) His dad is a__competitive__swimmer and a former champion. 例如:“Luckily, the coach was patient.”“Soon after, her once-hesitant son stopped sitting outside the pool during his classes”。 2. 例如:“For the first few lessons, Catherine came to watch.” “After a few days, the coach felt that ...”“Soon after ...”。 3. So Catherine signed up for swimming classes with her son. For the first few lessons, Catherine came to watch. Luckily, the coach was patient. Chirag still chose to sit outside the pool. After a few days, the coach felt that Catherine was skilled enough to dive into the water. Her fear washed over her again. She stood at the edge of the pool as if frozen. Just then, she found Chirag watching her. If she didn't make it, he would do the same thing. She took a deep breath, and jumped into the water. To Catherine's amazement, she didn't drown! No one was more proud of her jump than Chirag. Soon after, her oncehesitant son stopped sitting outside the pool during his classes, and plunged into the water. Now, Catherine isn't worried about swimming across the pool. Fear has given way to achievement. If she feels nervous when swimming, Chirag is always there to encourage her. The power of maternal love has allowed her to overcome her childhood phobia, and even the scariest unknown bottom of the pool doesn't seem so frightening. Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help crying when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Having wandered (徘徊) in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a shop for a while, watching the middleaged seller busy cooking noodles. However, she had no money. The seller in the shop noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?” “Oh, yes ... but I don't have money on me,” she replied. “That's nothing. I'll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny.“Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother didn't care for me. A stranger is much better than her!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you count the times she cooked for you? Have you ever said ‘Thanks’ to her?” Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock. she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered (沧桑的) hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.” On the way home, Jenny decided to say sorry to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home. At the door, Jenny met her father, who just came back from work. At last, her mother came back home. [精彩范文] At the door, Jenny met her father, who just came back from work. Amazed and sad, she stood still, speechless. Having seen that situation, her father was shocked, too. “What's wrong, my dear?” he asked and patted her back gently. She told him the fact that she had argued with her mother. She was worried about that maybe her mother was too angry to forgive her. Her father tried to comfort her and advised that they should make dinner for her mother. She took the advice with a smile. One hour later, dinner was ready. She paced up and down in the living room, waiting for her mother. At last, her mother came back home. Jenny rushed to her mother and said sorry again and again. “Here you come! I've been looking for you,” her mother said, tired and relieved. She felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks. She couldn't help throwing herself into her mother's arms. “Mum, I'm so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled and hugged her tightly in the arms. Her heart was as sweet as honey. Then, the whole family had dinner happily. 1.She couldn't help crying when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. 亮点:①can't help doing sth 意为“禁不住做某事”;②when引导时间状语从句。 2.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby.
