Text 9
W: How was your first day at the new work? Did you
meet your new boss today?
M: Yeah. I met him at the office this morning.
W: What did you think of him?
M: I was actually surprised. mHe didn’t seem like a boss
at all.
W: What do you mean?
M: mHe wasn’t dressed professionally. He had on jeans
and a regular shirt that didn’t quite fit him.
W: That’s surprising. nYou’re working for a financial
company... I would expect everyone to wear suits.
M: I guess he’s so rich that he doesn’t care. He’s also
in his fifties, so maybe he figures he’s lived long
enough to do whatever he wants.
W: Did you talk to him?
M: Yeah, we talked. I tried to ask him about my new job,
but he just made a lot of jokes and asked me what
singers I like.
W: Did he give you any advice at least?
M: oYeah, he did say I should read the newspaper every
day. He said that would help me understand the
economy.
W: pWell, here. You can take my copy of The Times. I’m
done reading it.
Text 10
W: Do you like wearing T-shirts like me because it is
comfortable? tAnd do you know the history of the
T-shirt? Well, white cotton T-shirts were first worn
by the U.S. Navy in the World War Ⅱ and by 1948,
every American soldier was wearing one too.
qBut it was Hollywood films that made the T-shirt
really popular: Actors Marlon Brando and James
Dean wore classic white T-shirts in their films. After
that, every young man wanted to wear one.
Women didn’t begin to wear T-shirts until the end
of the 1950s. In the 1959 French film À bout de
Soufflé, American actress Jean Seberg wore a T-shirt
advertising an English language newspaper. This
started a new fashion in T-shirts for women, rbut
it wasn’t until the mid-1960s that companies like
Budweiser and Coca-Cola started using T-shirts as
“walking advertisements”.
Later, sthe T-shirt became a way of saying
something important. For example, soon after the
black American leader Angela Davis went to prison
in 1970, people all around the world were wearing
T-shirts with the message “Free Angela”.
In the 1970s, French fashion designer Yves Saint
Laurent designed a famous blue T-shirt with his
name in white letters. Giorgio Armani has also used
T-shirts in his fashion shows. And in 2001, a number
of white “J’adore Dior” T-shirts sold quickly at over
$100 each!
Text 1(本题为推理判断题)
W: I’m always late for my morning classes. It’s because
of all the traffic out near where I live.
M: Well, you wouldn’t have that problem if you lived on
campus.
Text 2
M: Are these your children in this photo?
W: Yes. The oldest one is Henry. This is Linda, the
second oldest. And this is Bob, the youngest. The
tallest one is Peter, my husband.
