Text 2
W: That smells great, Lawrence! What are you cooking?
M: I took a Thai cooking class during my vacation there
last month. I’ve been trying to make a new recipe
every weekend.
Text 3
M: Hey, Mary! You don’t look happy. Is there anything
bothering you?
W: I’m certain I’m going to fail my English test. My
vocabulary and reading comprehension are not very
bad. But it’s impossible to improve listening level
within a week!
Text 4
W: How about going for a bike ride?
M: Sure. Where?
W: Let’s call Harry and ask him. He always knows the
best places to go.
M: That’s a good idea. I’ll get ready.
Text 5
W: Look at this traffic. Can you call Edward to tell him
we’ll be late?
M: I’m driving! Don’t you know it’s dangerous to call
and drive? Why don’t you get your phone and call
him?
W: OK.
card has to be renewed. Are you still at your same
address?
W: Yes, I am.
M: Okay, you’re all set. mWould you like a receipt?
W: No, thanks. By the way, do you have a list of the
classes you offer? I couldn’t find anything on the
website.
M: oWe’ve been meaning to get that information up on
the site. Here’s a list. Most of our classes are held on
Mondays and Wednesdays. Occasionally, we have a
class on Friday, but it’s rare.
W: Thank you. I’m interested in taking a Photoshop
class.
M: Oh, yes, that has been popular for a while now.
pWe’re offering a new course of Photoshop starting
next Monday. It will be every Monday for six weeks.
We also have photography and digital design, if
you’re interested.
W: pI think I’ll start with Photoshop first. Thanks for
your help.

W: qI have three older brothers. When I was young,
they usually played with their friends and left me
alone. Sometimes, our mother would take us to the
playground. We would chase each other. I remember
one time at the playground very well. I was six years
old. There was a very high slide there. We had to
climb about fifteen steps to get to the top. I was too
afraid to go up that high, because I just knew I’d
get hurt. rMy brothers kept telling me how easy it
was and how fun the slide would be. sI told them
it was very dangerous. rThey said nothing would
happen to me. So, I finally gave in. I climbed all the
way to the top of the steps and started to sit down
on the slide. But I lost my balance and fell all the
way down to the ground. My mother ran to me,
screaming. My brothers just stood with their mouths
open. They couldn’t believe I had fallen. tLuckily, I
broke nothing worse than my arm.

Text 6
W: Is your city a historical place?
M: 200 years ago, it was just a small insignificant
village.
W: How did it grow into such a large place?
M: fLarge deposits of coal were found and so many
industries located themselves here. The village
quickly grew into a key industrial center.
W: As the city grew, it must have absorbed many
villages nearby.
M: Yes, it did. The names of those villages survive as the
names of parts of the city.
W: I see. Are there any buildings more than 200 years
old in your city?
M: Oh, yes. Several of the buildings from the villages
still survive. Many of them were hotels for travelers
and today survive as pubs. There was a castle near
one village, so our city has a castle, too.
W: gYour city does have a long history after all.
Text 7
W: Hello. hHow was your vacation?
M: It was great: ha whole week at the seaside, swimming
and sitting in the sun. I feel completely relaxed.
W: How I envy you! Do you know what I was doing
when you were enjoying your vacation?
M: iWorking as usual?
W: Right. iAnd I was also asked to do some of your
work.
M: I’m sorry. They should have waited for me to come
back.
W: Don’t worry. iGo to your desk and you’ll find lots of
emails waiting for you.
M: Oh, it’s terrible, so many!
W: Well, it’s really hard for you to make up for the lost
time.
M: Yeah, I agree.
Text 8
W: My sister is going to be really disappointed if we
don’t make it in time for dinner.
M: Don’t worry. We still have time. You know they
won’t start eating until they’ve all chatted for an
hour.
W: Yeah, but jshe told everyone to get there at 6 p.m.
They’ve already been chatting for half an hour.
M: Well, we should get there soon.
W: Uh oh... no, we won’t. kI wrote Ocean Avenue North
by accident instead of Ocean Avenue South in the
GPS. This is so embarrassing. We’ll have to turn
around.
M: Well, on the bright side, we still got to the Ocean.
At least we didn’t start off going east by mistake.
Otherwise we’d be telling your sister we’ll have to
miss dessert too.
W: lI’m really not in the mood for jokes.
Text 9
W: Excuse me, mare you going to buy that book?
M: Well, I need it for a class but it’s awfully expensive.
W: Oh, nwe must be in the same class. Introduction to
British Literature?
M: nYes, that’s the one. Were you there yesterday for the
first class?
W: I sure was. Professor Robert really seems to know his
subject.
M: Yes, I took his Shakespeare course last semester and
it was very good. He likes listening to his students.
W: That’s a relief. I’m a biology major and I was a little
uncertain about taking an English course.
M: oI’m an English major and this is a required course.
But now I’m in trouble because I’m not sure whether
I can afford this book.
W: Hey, I’ve got an idea. pWhy don’t we split the cost
and share the book?
M: Sounds great. Do you live on campus?
W: Yeah, I live on the 10th floor of Butler Hall.
M: Perfect. I live on the 3rd floor of Butler. We should
have no trouble sharing the book. I can bring it up to
your room right after I wrap up the assignment.
W: It’s a deal.
Text 10(第 20 题为主旨要义题)
M: In large public American universities, many students
will find themselves in classes that are taught by
graduate students instead of professors or assistant
professors. qThis is not true for beginning courses

M: No, thanks. I’d like the fruit plate without strawberry.

M: I’m going to the beach this Sunday. Would you like
to come?
W: Oh, Sunday’s a bit of a problem. Some of my friends
are coming for dinner at my place. What about
Saturday?
Text 3
M: The lecture starts at 8:00.
W: Don’t rush. We still have fifteen minutes to go.

M: I won’t take it. Your price is higher than I’ve seen for
any other similar product.
W: But I think you should take the quality into
consideration. If you order a large enough quantity,
we can offer a slight discount.
Text 5
W: Excuse me, I’m looking for Mr. Tang.
M: Oh, he is not on this floor. He is on the fourth floor.
Go down the stairs and turn left.
Text 6
W: Charlie, how’s your business going?
M: fEverything seems to be getting worse. I really don’t
know what to do with it.
W: Nothing is plain sailing. You should never give up.
M: But what should I do?
W: gI think you should make a thorough market investi-
gation now.
M: gIt’s a thoughtful suggestion. I’ll try my best to do it.
W: Life is not all roses, and I believe you’ll pull this
through.
Text 7
M: This is Officer Belford. You reported a break-in
just now?
W: Yes, I did.
M: I’ll need a little more information about it. What time
did it happen?
W: It must have been sometime between 12:00 and
1:30 p.m. hbecause I was at home until almost 12:00
and I just got back at 1:30.
M: What did they get?
W: Well, what I know is some jewelry and the television.
that cover a lot of materials and often have several
hundred students; these classes require the
experience of a professor. rBut for courses that are
more for fun, like photography and classes about
pop culture, as well as smaller classes that are more
specialized, the university doesn’t want to waste
the valuable time of a professor. Because graduate
school is much more expensive than regular college,
graduate students often pay their way through school
by teaching these types of classes. In other words,
they do earn some money for their work, sbut it’s
not really the main reason to do it. It gives them
experience leading a classroom. Some parents look
down on universities that use graduate students to
teach the most important courses across many fields.
Considering how much school fees continue to rise
each year, these feelings are understandable. But the
reality is that all large schools do this; it’s part of a
public university education. And some studies have
suggested that students actually learn better when
they’re taught by graduate students.
