M: How are you paying for your college education?
W: My expense for every term is almost $15,000. At
the start of each term my parents pay $10,000 for
tuition. I also get $2,000 in financial aid. I have to
earn the rest myself.
M: How can you do that?
W: jkI have a part-time job at a hotel. The pay is not bad.
M: jHow do you spend the money?
W: jIt helps to pay for my room and board on campus.
It also pays for things like my cell phone, books,
transportation and clothes. I hardly ever go to the
movies. My roommates and I usually rent videos,
and share the cost. I don’t go to restaurants. lI cook
with my roommates. I try to walk or ride my bicycle
to college.

W: Does your family live around here?
M: No, mmy parents live in California. That’s where I
grew up.
W: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
M: I have twin brothers. One of them lives near my
parents, and the other one is in Washington. nAnd
my sister lives in England.
W: How old is she?
M: nShe’s twenty-eight. She’s been there for six years.
W: How old are your brothers?
M: They are twenty-four.
W: So you’re the oldest?
M: Yeah. My sister was born when I was two.
W: Did you grow up near other family members as well?
M: Yeah. We have a very large family. I grew up with
many aunts, uncles, and cousins. oWhen I had
birthday parties as a child, I couldn’t invite friends
from school because my cousins filled up the whole
house.
W: So why did you move to New York, then? It seems
like you would’ve wanted to stay near your family.
M: Well, it makes sense to live there when I have my
own family. My brothers and my sister will probably
also move back eventually. pBut for now, I’m
having a great time living on my own and starting
my career.

W: Well, I’ve just come back from China. When it
comes to Chinese people, most people will say they
are hard-working and smart, rbut for me, what
impresses me most is their honesty. Here, let me tell
you about my several experiences there. I stayed in
China for three years, and qI worked in a language
training school there. I had to admit that I was a
careless woman. I lost my purse twice in China, but
each time I got it back. The first time was when I
was in a taxi going home late at night. sMy purse
slipped out of my pocket and I didn’t notice. A few
days later, a policeman called me and I went to the
police station to fetch it. The second time was when
I was traveling in a mountainous area. I went into
a shop to buy some water. The shop owner was a
young man. And again I left my purse with my credit
card and ID card on the counter. tThis time, the
shop owner mailed my purse to me.

W: Mark, we’ve had these chairs since we got married.

M: fI’m sorry I’m late again. The traffic was terrible.
W: Well, that’s OK. But the schoolmaster wants to see
you. He asked about you this morning.
M: Oh, that’s too bad. I’m going to see him now.
W: You’d better go and see him after 10:00. He isn’t in
his office. He is having a meeting now.
M: To tell the truth, Mrs. Wilson, I don’t want to be late.
But you see, the traffic is always so heavy. How can
I not be late?
W: You should get up earlier.
M: It’s no use. Every time the alarm clock rings, I stop
it. You know, it’s difficult for me to wake up that
early.
W: gWhy don’t you buy a bike? That would be faster.
M: I guess so.

W: Let’s move out of here. This apartment is too small.
M: I agree. hI’ll look in the paper.
W: A house would be great. I could plant a garden. And
you could use the garage for a workshop.
M: Here’s an interesting ad : hiFor rent. Two-bedroom,
unfurnished house, fenced yard, one-car garage.
W: How much is the rent?
M: The ad says $325 per month. It’s available now, and
it’s got a very good location. You won’t be far from
work.
Text 8
M: How long are you planning to stay here?
W: I’ve got three weeks altogether. What do you suggest
I see?
M: What would you like to do?
W: I think I’d like to see some of the things that can’t be
found in other countries.
M: Well, I suggest you see some of our national parks.
You’ve got lots of old buildings in your country.
Ours is a fairly new country, so our cities and towns
are modern. jBut I guess we’ve got some of the most
beautiful mountains and countryside in the world.
Why don’t you hire a car and drive around for a
couple of weeks?
W: Is it expensive to rent a car?
M: No, not very. You need a driving license. Have you
got one?
W: Yes.
M: kI think you’d better fly somewhere in the west.
Then you can pick up a car and travel around.
W: What about places to stay?
M: lI suggest you take a tent. I can lend you one and a
few pieces of equipment.
W: That would be great. Thank you very much.

W: mI’d like to check out this book, please.
M: Eleanor & Park! I absolutely love this book.
W: Oh, good. I’m really looking forward to reading it.
I’ve heard a lot of good things.
M: Have you read Attachments or Landline? Those are
some of my favorite Rainbow Rowell’s novels. You
should read those as well.
W: I haven’t read them, but I’ve read Fangirl, which I
loved.
M: I haven’t read that one. nOh, it looks like your

W: Yes, I am.
M: Okay, you’re all set. mWould you like a receipt?
W: No, thanks. By the way, do you have a list of the
classes you offer? I couldn’t find anything on the
website.
M: oWe’ve been meaning to get that information up on
the site. Here’s a list. Most of our classes are held on
Mondays and Wednesdays. Occasionally, we have a
class on Friday, but it’s rare.
W: Thank you. I’m interested in taking a Photoshop
class.
M: Oh, yes, that has been popular for a while now.
pWe’re offering a new course of Photoshop starting
next Monday. It will be every Monday for six weeks.
We also have photography and digital design, if
you’re interested.
W: pI think I’ll start with Photoshop first. Thanks for
your help.

W: qI have three older brothers. When I was young,
they usually played with their friends and left me
alone. Sometimes, our mother would take us to the
playground. We would chase each other. I remember
one time at the playground very well. I was six years
old. There was a very high slide there. We had to
climb about fifteen steps to get to the top. I was too
afraid to go up that high, because I just knew I’d
get hurt. rMy brothers kept telling me how easy it
was and how fun the slide would be. sI told them
it was very dangerous. rThey said nothing would
happen to me. So, I finally gave in. I climbed all the
way to the top of the steps and started to sit down
on the slide. But I lost my balance and fell all the
way down to the ground. My mother ran to me,
screaming. My brothers just stood with their mouths
open. They couldn’t believe I had fallen. tLuckily, I
broke nothing worse than my arm.
