reward. The next painting shows Edmund’s wife
Margaret, whom he married in 1605. She’s wearing
all the family jewels. sAnd now let’s move on to the
picture of Henry and William, their two sons. It’s
the picture that hangs next to Margaret’s portrait,
and it’s the one I like best. The one who’s sitting
on the horse is Henry, and William’s the one who’s
holding the book. William, who was his mother’s
favorite, became a poet, swhile Henry, who his
father preferred, was a man of action. He fought in
the Civil War, which broke out in 1642. We don’t
know much about the woman he married, and he had
no heirs, but William, whose wife Jane was a famous
beauty, had nine children, who all survived. tNow,
I can lead you into the dining room, where we’ll see
some more recent pictures...

an apartment alone, right? Maybe we can rent
together...
Text 6

M: How are you paying for your college education?
W: My expense for every term is almost $15,000. At
the start of each term my parents pay $10,000 for
tuition. I also get $2,000 in financial aid. I have to
earn the rest myself.
M: How can you do that?
W: jkI have a part-time job at a hotel. The pay is not bad.
M: jHow do you spend the money?
W: jIt helps to pay for my room and board on campus.
It also pays for things like my cell phone, books,
transportation and clothes. I hardly ever go to the
movies. My roommates and I usually rent videos,
and share the cost. I don’t go to restaurants. lI cook
with my roommates. I try to walk or ride my bicycle
to college.
Text 9
W: Does your family live around here?
M: No, mmy parents live in California. That’s where I
grew up.
W: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
M: I have twin brothers. One of them lives near my
parents, and the other one is in Washington. nAnd
my sister lives in England.
W: How old is she?
M: nShe’s twenty-eight. She’s been there for six years.
W: How old are your brothers?
M: They are twenty-four.
W: So you’re the oldest?
M: Yeah. My sister was born when I was two.
W: Did you grow up near other family members as well?
M: Yeah. We have a very large family. I grew up with
many aunts, uncles, and cousins. oWhen I had
birthday parties as a child, I couldn’t invite friends
from school because my cousins filled up the whole
house.
W: So why did you move to New York, then? It seems
like you would’ve wanted to stay near your family.
M: Well, it makes sense to live there when I have my
own family. My brothers and my sister will probably
also move back eventually. pBut for now, I’m
having a great time living on my own and starting
my career.
Text 10
W: Well, I’ve just come back from China. When it
comes to Chinese people, most people will say they
are hard-working and smart, rbut for me, what
impresses me most is their honesty. Here, let me tell
you about my several experiences there. I stayed in
China for three years, and qI worked in a language
training school there. I had to admit that I was a
careless woman. I lost my purse twice in China, but
each time I got it back. The first time was when I
was in a taxi going home late at night. sMy purse
slipped out of my pocket and I didn’t notice. A few
days later, a policeman called me and I went to the
police station to fetch it. The second time was when
I was traveling in a mountainous area. I went into
a shop to buy some water. The shop owner was a
young man. And again I left my purse with my credit
card and ID card on the counter. tThis time, the
shop owner mailed my purse to me.

shopping mall.

M: Sorry, I’m late. I caught the wrong bus and went in
the wrong direction.
