W: Good evening. I know many of you students are the
proud owners of your first motor vehicle. qSo I want
to talk to you about something you can do to make
sure your car or motorbike isn’t stolen.
Car theft is a widespread problem. In this country
almost a million cars are stolen each year. And
of those, 40% are never recovered. rMost thefts
occur in residential areas, often in front of a house
or even from inside the garage. Some areas that
are especially dangerous are shopping centers and
parking lots. Most car thieves don’t need to break
into the cars. sThey usually gain entry through
unlocked doors and one in five stolen cars had the
keys left in the car. Isn’t that amazing? 20% of
drivers left the keys in an unlocked car!
Who steals cars? Well, there are basically two
kinds of thieves: joyriders aged about 15 to 21,
and professionals. The latter group usually needs
less than one minute to break into a locked car and
tthey often steal cars to use in other crimes such as
robberies. You are much less likely to get your car
back if it’s stolen by a professional, and if it’s stolen
by a joyrider, it’ll be broken when you do get it
back. Joyriders have a very high accident rate.

M: Right. How does 9:30 tomorrow morning sound to
you?
W: Er... OK, then.
M: My office is on the third floor of the Eliot Building...
Room E332.
Text 7
W: I’ve made a tough decision, sir. hHere’s my resignation.
M: Well, I have to tell you that I’m quite surprised.
hWhy? Were you unhappy working for us?
W: Oh, no. Not at all.
M: Are you planning on studying abroad, or have you
been given a better offer?
W: Oh, no. It’s my mother. She’s sick and needs
someone to take care of her. I’m the only one who
can do it.
M: I’m sorry to hear that, ibut you don’t need to quit
over that. We can hold your job for you until your
mother gets better.
W: iReally? I didn’t know that would be possible.
Thanks, sir.

M: So, how was your vacation? You went to London,
didn’t you?
W: Yeah, with my parents. We just got back on Saturday.
It was wonderful!
M: What places did you visit?
W: jWell, we saw all the most famous places, Big Ben,
London Eye... They were so interesting.
M: Did you take any tours?
W: Just one — a boat tour on the Thames.
M: Wow! That sounds wonderful.
W: Yeah. It was a great way to see the city.
M: Did you go to any of the famous art museums?
W: Yeah. kMy parents love art, so they spent hours in
the museums. But for me, it was pretty boring. I’m
just not very interested in paintings.
M: So, what else did you do?
W: Well, lI guess my favorite thing to do was just sit in
the park and watch the people. It was really relaxing.
M: It sounds like a great vacation to me.
W: Oh, it was. But it’s good to be home.
Text 9
M: Do you have many friends?
W: Yes. I have many friends. But only one of them is
very close to me. She is Cathy.
M: When and how did you meet her?
W: Well. mWe met in our first year of high school, about
five years ago. We were in the same class, so we did
many interesting things together.
M: Do you have any close friends in the university?
W: No. I was busy with study and work.
M: Why do you think you became close friends with
Cathy rather than others?
W: Well. At the beginning, nwe had a chance to organize
a speech contest. That made us close. oThen, I
discovered she was an honest person and I think
honesty is the most important aspect of friendship.
M: What else did you do?
W: pWe were both in the basketball team. We practiced
together and helped each other. Although we are in
different cities now, we are still best friends.
M: What is friendship?
W: Hmm... It is a process with depth and openness. It is
like a flower. It needs air, water and sunlight to make
it flourish.

M: Welcome everybody to Claremont Castle. I’m Jasper
Claremont and this has been my family’s home,
where we’ve lived for over four hundred years,
since the time of Edmund Claremont, who first lived
here in 1600. qThis room is the great hall and the
paintings you can see here are our oldest portraits.
The painting we’re looking at now shows Edmund
himself. Do you see the ship in the background? It’s
the one which he was captain of during a famous
naval victory. This victory was the reason why he
became a national hero. rHe was given the piece
of land where Claremont Castle now stands as a

reward. The next painting shows Edmund’s wife
Margaret, whom he married in 1605. She’s wearing
all the family jewels. sAnd now let’s move on to the
picture of Henry and William, their two sons. It’s
the picture that hangs next to Margaret’s portrait,
and it’s the one I like best. The one who’s sitting
on the horse is Henry, and William’s the one who’s
holding the book. William, who was his mother’s
favorite, became a poet, swhile Henry, who his
father preferred, was a man of action. He fought in
the Civil War, which broke out in 1642. We don’t
know much about the woman he married, and he had
no heirs, but William, whose wife Jane was a famous
beauty, had nine children, who all survived. tNow,
I can lead you into the dining room, where we’ll see
some more recent pictures...

M: gHave you read today’s newspaper?
W: No. Is there anything important?
M: Yes. gThere was a traffic accident yesterday
afternoon.
W: How did it happen?

home. A car hit them and they were badly hurt.

the doctors in time.
W: How are the children now?
M: They are getting better now.
W: I hope everything goes well.
Text 7
W: You are new here, aren’t you?
M: Yes, I studied in a middle school in a small town last
term. I began to study here this term.
W: hHave you come to the reading room for the first
time?
M: hYes. It is big and bright. And there are a lot of
newspapers and books here.
W: iDo you know the rules in the reading room?
M: iSorry, I don’t know. Could you tell me about them,
please?
W: iOK! Everyone must take good care of the
newspapers and books here and keep the reading
room clean and tidy. You must put everything back
