kMaybe that is why Betsy is going to Harvard!
M: But our girls have excellent grades. I just wish you
would let them have more of a social life.
W: When I was their age...
M: Let’s not go there. lWe come from a different
country. Of course it was different for us. Our girls
are Americans. Let them live like Americans.
W: OK, I will take your advice this time. But they’d
better be home by midnight, or I’m blaming you!
M: Don’t worry. mI will go to pick them up. We shouldn’t
make Sharon drive them home so late.
Text 9
M: I am tired of my job. I want something different in
my life. I’m ready to travel the world.
W: oYour job is good. You make enough money to live a
comfortable life. You can buy what you want. Why
would you give it up?
M: Didn’t you hear me? pI want some adventures! I
think I’ll join the army.
W: What? Are you ready to train hard for the next four
years?
M: No, no. I don’t want to go into those places. pI want
to join the merchant teams. You load ships with
goods from one country. Then you ride on the ship
and deliver the products to another country. It’s hard
work, but I don’t mind. pThat way, I can see other
places around the world. The pay is very well, too.
W: Sounds good. Will your family be sad?
M: Not if I bring them gifts from other countries.
W: qWill you bring me a present, too?
M: Sure, what would you like?
W: I’ve always wanted a silk dress from India.
M: I’ll see what I can do.

W: Although the city of Gilan is not far from the capital
of the country, the people here have not enjoyed
the economic advantages as those in the capital.
rMost of the people here are farmers, and their
only source of earning money is selling what they
grow to markets. The markets want to make a profit
when the farmers sell, so the people of the city do
not get very good deals. The main crop they sell
is tea, although some rice and corn are grown here
too. Nowadays, the young generation living in the
rural parts of the city is moving to bigger cities.
Their parents and grandparents seem to think this is
because the kids don’t like village life. sHowever,
the fact is that there are not many jobs here.
Although the soil is good to grow what they need,
young people don’t want to be farmers like previous
generations. Older people here entertain themselves
by watching their favorite sport, or meeting in small
markets. tA festival is held here every 10 years, and
is attended by thousands of people. Almost half the
city goes there. tThe last time it was held was in
2017, and the locals say everyone is looking forward
to the next one. Some even say it should be held
every 5 years, instead of 10.

M: fMom, can you drive me to the cinema?

M: fBut it’s going to rain! Look at the dark and cloudy

W: Well, you can take a bus.
M: But I’m meeting my friends at five thirty. The bus

W: What’s wrong with you?
M: hThe noise from that construction site next door is
driving me crazy!
W: Is that guy drilling outside your window again?
M: Again? He never stops. hIt’s so bad that I even hear

W: Why don’t you take the rest of the afternoon off?
M: I can’t. I’ve got to hand in the report today.
W: Oh! They say bad noise can affect your health. It
causes hearing damage.
M: It’s worse than that! Studies show that high noise
levels affect the heart, too. iI have to talk to the

W: jI read a book on John Milton this afternoon. It was
so interesting and moving.
M: Really? Who is John Milton?
W: He is a very famous English poet.
M: jPlease tell me more.
W: jHe was born in 1608 in London. Even when he
was young he had an idea of writing a great poem.
kHe mastered Greek and Latin completely, learned
French, Italian and Spanish and studied the latest
theories of science to prepare for his great works.
M: That’s unbelievable!
W: jMilton worked endlessly for twenty years.
Unfortunately, he lbecame completely blind with his
greatest works still unwritten.
M: Oh! No! That’s terrible!
W: But he told everything to his daughters. They helped
him finish the works.
M: Oh! He really is a great man.

W: Here we are!
M: This place is very convenient. There’s a supermarket
and a laundry and some grocery stores over there.
W: And the people here seem very friendly.
M: But it’s five flights up.
W: That’s OK. We’ll get used to it soon.
M: Ah! The sitting room is pretty bright and that
bedroom is big enough for the twins.
W: What about the kitchen?
M: The stove and the refrigerator are in good working
order, and I don’t see any loose electric wiring that
could cause fires.
W: Oh, this place is well furnished, and that’ll save us a
lot of time and trouble.
M: We’re a little further away from the street and traffic
noise and nthere’s no one living over us. That’s why
it’s quieter up here.
W: The toilet is new, the shower has hot and cold water
and the sinks in the bathroom and the kitchen don’t

Text 10
W: Good evening. I know many of you students are the
proud owners of your first motor vehicle. qSo I want
to talk to you about something you can do to make
sure your car or motorbike isn’t stolen.
Car theft is a widespread problem. In this country
almost a million cars are stolen each year. And
of those, 40% are never recovered. rMost thefts
occur in residential areas, often in front of a house
or even from inside the garage. Some areas that
are especially dangerous are shopping centers and
parking lots. Most car thieves don’t need to break
into the cars. sThey usually gain entry through
unlocked doors and one in five stolen cars had the
keys left in the car. Isn’t that amazing? 20% of
drivers left the keys in an unlocked car!
Who steals cars? Well, there are basically two
kinds of thieves: joyriders aged about 15 to 21,
and professionals. The latter group usually needs
less than one minute to break into a locked car and
tthey often steal cars to use in other crimes such as
robberies. You are much less likely to get your car
back if it’s stolen by a professional, and if it’s stolen
by a joyrider, it’ll be broken when you do get it
back. Joyriders have a very high accident rate.
