W: I’m going to the snack bar for a cup of coffee. Would
you like me to bring you back something?
M: Not from the snack bar, but could you pick up a
paper for me?
W: OK. I will.
Text 5
W: Excuse me. Do you know where I can find a cafe
around here?
M: There’s one right next to the museum down the
block. They have wonderful coffee. There’s also
W: Is that all you need? Anything else you’re short of?
M: No, I think I’m all right otherwise. Thanks a lot,
Alistair. See you in a bit.
W: Glad to help.
Text 9
M: Betty, how was the concert last night?
W: It was fine. pBut I didn’t enjoy it because I had an
argument with a person.
M: You? mIt’s unbelievable that you could have an
argument with anybody. What happened?
W: It was a woman, with her son, about 6 years old.
They sat behind me and talked all the way through
the concert. It was so annoying.
M: So you argued with them?
W: No. I just told them not to talk and they nodded. But
a minute later, they began talking again. nThe boy
even kicked my seat. I felt quite uncomfortable so I
turned my head and stared at them. Guess what? The
woman said I should be nice to kids. Then we started
to argue. What would you have done?
M: oI wouldn’t have argued with her. I would have
asked the security guard to remove her.
W: You’re right.
Text 10
M: I was born in New Jersey, qbut my family moved to
New York when I was five. This was my father’s idea.
qHe wanted us to have a more cultured childhood.
A lot of people with different cultural backgrounds
lived there. We were closer to museums, theaters and
art galleries. My school had students from all over
the world, and I learned how to take the subway
every day. rI also got to eat many different kinds
of food, which was much better than in New Jersey.
But there were some bad things. I didn’t like having
to share a bedroom with my parents, and I didn’t
think they did, either! Also, the roads outside were
always noisy, and when it was hot, the garbage on
the sidewalks made me want to throw up! sBut I
had to say that my favorite part of living in the city
was my neighbors. My neighborhood was mostly
made up of families with kids my age, so it was easy
to make friends. Every evening after dinner, all
the kids would go to the park and play. And since
everyone knew each other, it was really safe. tI’m
glad we moved to the city!

M: Hey, Susie. There’s a strange guest in Suite Three.
W: Mr. Nash? Why’s he strange?
M: Well. He stays in his room all day.
W: Yes, but he eats in the restaurant every evening.
M: But fhe orders room service in the morning and at
lunchtime. And he orders the same food every day.
An American breakfast and a hamburger for lunch.
W: Well, that’s not strange.
M: Oh no? Guess how much he gives me for a tip.
W: $10?
M: No.
W: $25?
M: No. He tips everyone $100.
W: Wow!

M: Do you know the big shop on the High Street?
W: Which one do you refer to? hThe one next to the post
office? The one on the corner? The one with round
windows? There are several big shops on the High
Street.
M: hThe one with the windows and the one on the
corner have both been changed into offices now. I
mean another one.
W: hOh yes, I know. I bought my boots there.
M: Yes, that’s the one. Everyone used to have their kids’
feet measured there. They had some nice shoes but a
little old-fashioned.
W: So, what do you want to tell me about the shop?
M: Well, I was down there this morning and I noticed it
has now been divided into two, with one shop selling
phones and the other selling organic food.
W: iOh, that’s such a shame. All the town’s lovely old
businesses are disappearing.
Text 8(第 12 题为主旨要义题)
W: Hi, Henry! You look sad. What’s the matter?
M: I hate my new job! It really gets me down.
W: Oh. Too bad.
M: Yeah, every morning I have to get up at 6:00. jAnd
there’s no bus at that time so I have to cycle five
miles to get to work.
W: It’s a long ride.
M: And when I get to work I have to make the boss a
cup of coffee. I feel like a servant.
W: Ur, you’re in Customer Services, right?
M: Yes. The same thing all the time. kJust answering
the phone to hear people complain and complain. It
makes me mad.
W: Well, at least you get a free lunch.
M: You mean used to. Now we have to pay £5 just to eat.
W: I see. But you finish work early.
M: Yeah, but when I get home I’m too tired to do
anything. My social life is zero right now.
Text 9
M: The weather forecast says tomorrow will still be
smoggy. We haven’t seen the sun for nearly one week.
W: Yes. mThe smog has been so heavy every day
recently.
M: Yesterday’s weather forecast said nthe pollution in
our city was very serious.
W: mMany people have to wear a mask every day now. I
plan to wear one tomorrow.
M: Me too. oI’ve decided to take a bus to work instead
of driving. I hope it will help.
W: I think that’s a good way to cut down on vehicle
emissions. oI can ride my bike to work since my
office is not far from my home.
M: Oh, that’s good! nI hope the government will do
something to stop air pollution.
W: Yes, though I think it’s not only the government’s
job. We citizens should also try to do what we can to
protect our environment.
M: Yes, you’re right. pWell, I hope we can have a few
sunny days soon.
W: I hope so, too.
Text 10
W: Many customers asked me how I began making
cakes. Now I’d like to share how I began my career
as a cake maker.
qI started off making cakes for my kids and quickly
realized that baking provided me with a creative
outlet rthat had been missing from my work selling
toys to children. I started posting pictures of my
work on Facebook and soon developed a large
following. Friends and friends of friends started
asking me to make cakes for them, so I figured I

should give this a shot as a business! After two years
baking at night while working in my office during
the day, I decided to take the leap and go full-time
with it. That was five years ago when I was already
forty years old. I never looked back! Since then, the
business has grown dramatically! It was clearly the
best decision for me because sit developed a creative
side of me that had previously been unfulfilled. The
added bonus is that I’m able to be home for my
kids every day when they come home from school.
tMany women who fear changing their lives have
been inspired by my change.

M: Shall we meet in front of the school tomorrow
afternoon?
W: But my class is going on a trip to the ocean park
tomorrow. So how about we meet next Saturday?
M: Sounds fine to me.
Text 4
M: Excuse me. Do you know what time it is? I’m
supposed to meet my mom here at 5:00.

Text 5
W: Why don’t you watch where you’re going instead of
talking on your cell phone, buddy? I don’t want to
die crossing the street!

Text 6
M: So you say fyou had your handbag stolen this
afternoon at about what time?
W: fIt must have been three hours ago, about four
o’clock. I was doing my shopping when a fellow
suddenly seized my bag and ran off.
M: Was there anything valuable inside the bag?
W: Not really. But the bag itself was an expensive one
— it cost me about $500.
M: And are you able to recognize the man?
W: I remember he was tall, bearded. I’m sure I’d
recognize him if I saw him again.
M: OK. gI just need to find out a few more details before
we take action.
Text 7
M: Hello, Mary. I notice quite a lot of black smoke
coming out of the chimneys of the factory near our
school. It all adds to the air pollution.
W: Yes, it does. But I hear that the factory leaders have
promised to take measures.
M: I hope they will keep their promise.
W: I think they will. hThey have promised that a special
machine will be installed at the end of this year. It
will take in the fine dust in the smoke before it pours
into the air.
M: That’s good.
W: John, you see, inow we do not eat the fish from the
lake near the steelworks.
M: iBecause the waste has polluted the lake.
Text 8
W: jWhere were you yesterday, Tom?
M: jI was at home asleep.
W: Asleep? I thought you had to take an exam. Didn’t
you say it was very important?
M: Yes. But I was sick. I had a fever. I couldn’t get out
of bed.
