“Do you go to a window when you hear a clap of thunder, or pounding rain, or see a streak of lightning(闪电) in the sky? Me too.Except I take my curiosity a little bit further, I go out and chase the biggest storms I can find.”
The quote above was from Tim Samaras.Tim's curiosity started when he was about six years old when he saw the fantastic tornado in the movie the Wizard of Oz.And this curiosity took him in search of some of the worst storms and tornadoes in recent history.
He spent over half of his life running into the path of tornadoes to place research tools in the right places to gather information. He battled dangerous and powerful winds, pounding rain, chunks of hail, and the eerie noise of a racing tornado many times. He even saw the destruction of an entire community.Tim was a storm researcher and an explorer.
Tim didn't put himself in harm's way for the thrill of it; he did it for the science. His goal was to answer questions about tornadoes to help people better prepare for these violent storms.
When Tim went after storms, sometimes the tables were turned and the storms chased him! That's exactly what happened to Tim and his team while tracking a tornado.Upon seeing the tornado change course and head directly for them, the team jumped into action and quickly set up a tornado measuring device and then quickly drove away.
Besides chasing storms, Tim also wanted to inspire young people to study science and take up scientific research. “If you are as interested in weather as I do, learn as much as you can about weather. There are many colleges and universities that have active tornado research programs that allow students to participate at all levels. Most of all, keep your focus on what you want to do! Sometimes schoolwork can become very difficult.Keep at it, and you will do great!”

On March 19,2018,the world lost Sudan, the last male(雄性的) northern white rhino(犀牛).Sudan died at the age of 45.
A new film, Kifaru, tells Sudan's story through the eyes of his Kenyan caretakers.Kifaru, directed by David Hambridge, was recently shown at the Hot Docs 2019 Festival in Toronto, Canada.People are drawn into the world of the three caretakers and their love for Sudan.
“I saw the caretakers, the bond(纽带) they had, and how strong it was,” Hambridge said.“I saw how much they loved giving Sudan baths, feeding him, sitting next to him, and talking to him.”
After showing the bond between Sudan and his caretakers, Hambridge decided to tell the story “in a way that was very human,” he explained.“I wanted people to be able to experience the joys and pitfalls of animal protection on the ground.”
Taking care of a rhino, especially the last male northern white rhino, is no easy job.In Kenya, the role of a rhino caretaker does not make much money. Moreover, the caretakers had to spend 10 months out of the year away from their families. As James, one of Sudan's caretakers, said in Kifaru, the job was “taking care of an animal that can never look you in the eyes and say, ‘Thank you.’”
The film comes along with lots of sad news about animal extinction.Except for rhinos, many of whom were killed for their horns(角), lots of other animals are disappearing as well.According to a new report from the United Nations, as many as one million kinds of animals are at risk of extinction because of human activity.
As caretaker James said about the rhino problem, extinction is the result of humans' endless greed(贪欲).Unless we act now, life on Earth could change quickly.

Beavers(河狸) are famous for building impressive dams in streams. They have a rare ability to transform the landscapes they live in.This is primarily because beavers need to use their dams to hide from predators(捕食者) like bears, wolves, and river otters.Beavers live in dome-shaped constructions within the ponds that can only be accessed by underwater entrances.Inside, they are safe from threats.Besides, they can also store food inside and keep warm in winter.
Beavers build dams up to 5 meters high, and the largest one, in Alberta, Canada, is 850 meters long. Most dams are built from pieces of wood, with stones at the base and a sealing layer of mud and plants on the upstream side. The dams are thicker at the bottom with a shallow slope on the upstream side, meaning that the weight of the water pushes down on the dam, keeping it in place and allowing it to hold back large volumes of water.Their engineering work is so effective that beaver dams can last for decades.
Beaver dams can promote the creation and development of stable wetland ecosystems, one of the most productive ecosystems in the world, which serve as the home of rare and endangered species. In addition, the dams can help water flow to the newly created ponds, thus, preventing flooding in areas downstream of the rivers where these dams are built. They also protect the land from soil erosion(侵蚀,腐蚀) and block pollutants in the water flow downstream into major water bodies.
However, PhD student Robert Needham, from the International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research at Southampton, expressed a great deal of his concern about the possibility of beaver dams blocking the upstream and downstream migration(迁移) of Atlantic salmon(鲑鱼) and trout during their reproduction seasons, as well as affecting habitat quality. Thus, people should control the construction of beaver dams, especially in human-inhabited areas, near agricultural fields and pasture lands.

37 As of August 2010, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide.About 100,000 sea turtles and other sea animals die every year because they mistake the bags for food.In Australia, 50 million bags end up as litter yearly.
In view of the terrible effects of plastic bags, some alternatives(替代物) are used. 38 And more high-quality bags are available in practically all chain stores, from bookstores like Borders to Whole Foods. In addition, many people sew their own from leftover fabric(布料) or by turning old jeans or beach towels into carry-on bags. 39
As the effects of plastic bags are concerned by more governments, they are taking steps to limit plastic bags or ban them completely. 40 Then, the use of plastic bags in China reduced sharply. One of the most important efforts has taken place in Ireland, where a tax has been issued on each plastic bag.And it has led to a 95 percent decrease in usage.

Hello everyone!
Hearing that the first Chinese Mars Probe Tian Wen 1 launched on July 23rd, 2020 aims to land on Mars around May, 2021, it's a great honor for me to be here to congratulate beforehand on the success. Without doubt, had it not been for the hard work, we Chinese couldn't have gained such great achievements. As a student of my generation, I firmly believe it is a time with both challenges and opportunities, when we could achieve whatever we fight for if we spare no effort to attain the goal.At the same time, the more I know about my country, the deeper love I have for her.Wish China, my motherland, all the best.
That's all. Thanks for your listening.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It all started with the Food Fair, where groups of students prepared food representing different countries, in my school.I was excited to be in Group Spain. The group leader, Stan, designed a sign-up sheet for different tasks. There was a cooking-task.I could do far better in cooking. So, I chose to cook Spanish dishes on the very day of the fair.
Yet, the first few weeks slipped away quickly, and no one seemed to be starting their jobs—probably because they were tired by their studies, or they were simply not in the mood.I was worried that we might present a bad Spain because of our slow progress. After telling other members in Group Spain about my worries and encouraging them to make preparations, we finally started the preparation work.
When we made preparations for the fair, I received a message from Stan.“How many cups of drink do you plan to prepare?”He asked.Maybe forty?I wasn't sure.I asked the group members in charge of the planning about the number of people who would be at the fair, but they said they didn't know.Out of other solutions, I answered Stan with my count and explained that I might need to confirm(确定) with the organizer of the fair to know the exact number.
Then one day later, another demand came, “By the way, can you tell me the price for the food?” Sending him the rough price of the food, I frowned. This was supposed to be the task of others. Why did I have to do it? Again, for the progress of our group, I did not think much.
Then came the third, “I mean I need specific numbers, the unit price for each, and the total cost.Make a table and list all the things, will you?” Before I could do the market research for him, the fourth appeared.I tried to hold my manner as I felt rather dissatisfied when I realized that he was assigning(分派) others' jobs to me.“That's it.Enough is enough,” I said to myself.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
One possible version:
Having carefully chosen language, I went forward.I told him I had done enough to his benefit, and that I wouldn't argue for all the tasks I had already done.I stated my point clearly.I told him I was just worried about the success of the group work and therefore said a few words to encourage other group members to start working. But that didn't mean I became responsible for the entire process of the preparation.
After hearing all those words, Stan said he understood my point and admitted his mistakes. He apologized to me and offered to help me with cooking on the day of the fair.As a leader, he took on his responsibility, sending messages to every member of the group and asking them to change their attitude to the fair.Realizing their wrong attitude towards the fair, all the group members did their job to make preparations. When that day came, we presented the cooking of Spain together successfully.
