B When my father died last year, I received messages from my friends and family sharing their condolences (吊唁). While I appreciated everyone who reached out, I was especially grateful to two of my roommates who surprised my family with a delivery of bagels (百吉圈) for breakfast. Despite a mix- up in the address and the fact that we never received those bagels, this act of kindness stayed with me. It mattered more than the actual food. There’s a difference between being nice and being kind. Being nice often involves politeness and the purpose of pleasing others. It can be used as a strategy to leave a good impression, as noted by Dr Manly, a psychologist. Think about the last time you praised someone’s clothes but didn’t actually mean it. If you’ re people- pleasing, you may also expect others to respond in a certain way. But being kind is less self- serving. A kind person tries to really understand what someone else is going through so he could offer assistance. He is acting out of genuine concern for another without expecting anything in return. Practicing kindness benefits people’s health. When people act kindly, the brain releases a substance called oxytocin, which dampens activity in a region of the brain involved in fear and anxiety. If you have ever felt less stressed from helping others, it’s all thanks to the calming effects of oxytocin. Besides, acts of kindness get your brain to release feel- good chemicals like endorphins. They promote pleasure and act as a natural pain reliever. Being kind provides the same health benefits, no matter how big or small the gesture is. Below are some good deeds you can do and start right now: pick up litter, be an active listener, cook a meal for someone in need. Initially, acts of kindness might feel unfamiliar and out of character. However, this feeling will go away if you practice more. Soon enough, it will become so familiar and you’ll notice the benefits to yourself and others. 24. What made the author most grateful according to paragraph 1? A. The support from his family. B. The present of bagels sent to him. C. The messages expressing sympathy. D. The genuine concern from his roommates. 25. Where does the difference between niceness and kindness lie? A. In people’s intentions. B. In people’s capabilities. C. In people’s appearances. D. In people’s impression on others. 26. What does the underlined word “dampens” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Reflects B. Stimulates C. Weakens D. Assesses 27. What does the author encourage people to do in the last paragraph? A. Perform acts of kindness. B. Acknowledge kind acts in life. C. Enjoy the benefits of being kind. D. Value the impact of kindness. C An artificial intelligence (AI) tool of street view could be used to predict the risk of coronary heart disease — a condition where the heart’s arteries (动脉) are blocked, limiting blood flow to the heart by analysing neighbourhood environments, according to research. A study, published in the European Heart Journal, monitored everyday surroundings, including the quality of roads, buildings, and green spaces, and the role they play in determining heart health. Researchers were able to track the link between these environmental elements, including the presence or absence of pollution, and the risk of coronary heart disease. They found that these neighbourhood characteristics could account for 63% of the differences in heart disease risk from one community to another. The discovery stems from analysing more than half a million AI street view images across US cities, using computer vision to identify and interpret details that might go unnoticed by the human eye. The data provides urban planners and public health officials with information to design healthier living spaces and neighbourhoods. “Undoubtedly, there is a vast amount of social, economic and environmental data set,” said one of the study's authors, Prof Sanjay Rajagopalan. “However, there still remain significant gap s in our knowledge regarding unique environmental aspects of data that are currently beyond human comprehension. This is where the use of computer vision approaches may enable unique understanding of the physical and built environment.” By employing AI, researchers have been able to examine the details of neighbourhoods’ environment. The study employed computer vision technology, including applications used in medical imaging and autonomous driving, to identify details and then interpret them to make predictions or decisions. “We are getting to a place in human civilization where traditional approaches that have been used are rather limited and the use of AI to enhance human understanding is going to be critically important at solving complex problems,” Prof Rajagopalan said. 28 What is the finding of the study? A. How people can prevent heart diseases. B. How environments affect heart health. C. How AI can reduce heart disease risks. D. How the heart's arteries are blocked. 29. What can the finding of the study help to do? A. Promote computer technology. B. Reduce air and water pollution. C. Design green neighbourhoods. D. Advertise for an AI company. 30. Why was computer vision used in the study? A. The researchers had no environmental data. B. It had solved some environmental problems. C. People ignored the environment they live in. D. It helped people understand the environment. 31. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. The development of AI for hospitals B. The medical use of a street view tool C. The insight into healthy neighbourhoods D. The link between the heart and environment D “Renewable energy development is a critically important component of the transition away from fossil fuels, making our air cleaner. However, bird death has become an unintended consequence of renewable energy development,” said Hannah Vander Zanden, an assistant professor of biology at the University of Florida. Birds can be killed when they hit wind turbines (涡轮机) , fly into solar panels they mistake for bodies of water or get burned by the intense heat from concentrating solar power plants. “While the death rate of birds due to these energy facilities is far lower than deaths due to domestic cats and crashes with buildings, efforts to deal with this new problem are important,” scientists said. Vander Zanden and her colleagues performed geospatial (地理空间的) analyses of stable data obtained from feathers of 871 individual birds found dead at these renewable energy facilities in California, which represented 24 species. Results from the study show that the birds killed at the facilities were from a broad area across the continent. Their geographical origins varied among species and included a mix of local and nonlocal birds. Researchers found most birds killed at solar facilities were nonlocal and peaked during the migratory periods of April and September through October. The percentage of the migratory birds found at wind facilities nearly matched that of local birds, at 51%. “The data can help inform us about the best strategies to use to minimize the deaths,” Vander Zanden said. “For example, facilities management could work with conservationists to improve the local habitat to help protect local birds or improve other parts of the species’ range where the migratory birds originate.” The results also illustrate: the power of stable data to assess future population growth or decline patterns for birds due to a variety of reasons. “Studying the remains of animals like what we did is a noninvasive approach to get information that is otherwise hard to track and apply to conservation,” Vander Zanden said. “It’s a great way to understand the mysteries about animals.” 32. What is the new threat to birds according to Vander Zanden? A. The high- rise buildings. B. The loss of natural habitats. C. The large number of domestic cats. D. The rise of renewable energy facilities. 33. What did Vander Zanden and her colleagues discover in their study? A. Solar facilities were a major cause of bird deaths. B. Local birds faced a greater death risk at wind facilities. C. The majority of birds killed at solar facilities were migratory. D. The bird death rate was closely related to migration patterns. 34. What can we infer from Vander Zanden’s words? A. Animals hold many mysteries to humans. B. The study possesses scientific significance. C. Keeping track of and analysing birds is challenging. D. The remains of dead birds should be well conserved. 35. Which of the following proverbs can be concluded from the text? A. Every coin has two sides. B. The early bird catches the worm. C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Benefits of Boredom to Embrace Boredom is good medicine for the brain. And he had a single goal: to hike in the hills of west - central Iowa, which is the best wild place for people who love hiking in the wild. Although it’s about 250 miles from the hills of west - central Iowa to Ehlers’ home in Minnesota, he still put into practice with his friends. During a long trip home, following a weekend of hiking, Ehlers thought about the small brown dog he had seen trembling alongside the road. At the time, he stopped the car and tried to coax (哄劝) the dog to him but, frightened, it ran off. It immediately disappeared without a trace. Back home, Ehlers was troubled by that lost dog, which drove him to make up his mind to find that dog. So, four days later, he called his friend Greg, and the two drove back. Arriving at that place, they came across a local farmer and asked him, “Have you seen a lost dog? We had seen the dog trembling alongside the road four days ago.” Meanwhile, Greg described the dog’s appearance to him. “The dog sounded like one advertised as lost in the local paper. The ad had a phone number for a town in southern Minnesota and the dog’s picture,” the local farmer told them. Ehlers and Greg were excited to know that the dog’s owners were Jeff and Lisa. So they called Jeff and Lisa to tell them they were finding their dog. Hearing that, Jeff was surprised and said, “We had hiked in Iowa before Thanksgiving with our dog, Rosie, but a fierce dog came out of nowhere and scared Rosie off. We searched in vain for Rosie in the next four days. So we drove back home.” “We are also driving there now, and it will take about two hours to arrive in Iowa. Tell me exactly where you are. Let’s search Rosie together,” Jeff said. “OK. We will wait for you while looking for Rosie,” Ehlers replied. After nearly two hours’ careful search, an amazing thing happened. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ehlers called Jeff and Lisa again and waited for their arrival. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高三英语入学考试 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? D 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第一段中的“While I appreciated everyone who reached out, I was especially grateful to two of my roommates who surprised my family with a delivery of bagels (百吉圈) for breakfast. Despite a mix- up in the address and the fact that we never received those bagels, this act of kindness stayed with me. It mattered more than the actual food. (虽然我感谢每一个伸出援手的人,但我特别感谢我的两个室友,他们给我的家人带来了早餐的百吉圈。尽管地址搞错了,而且我们从来没有收到过那些百吉圈,但这种善意的行为让我印象深刻。这比食物本身更重要。)”可知,作者最感激的是室友们的真诚关心,而不是百吉圈本身。故选D。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“There’s a difference between being nice and being kind. 故选A。 根据第三段中的“activity in a region of the brain involved in fear and anxiety (大脑中与恐惧和焦虑有关的区域的活动)”和“If you have ever felt less stressed from helping others, it’s all thanks to the calming effects of oxytocin. (如果你曾经因为帮助别人而感到压力减轻,这都要归功于催产素的镇静作用。)”可知,催产素会减弱大脑中与恐惧和焦虑相关的区域的活动。dampens的词义为“减弱”。A. 根据最后一段中的“Below are some good deeds you can do and start right now: pick up litter, be an active listener, cook a meal for someone in need. Initially, acts of kindness might feel unfamiliar and out of character. However, this feeling will go away if you practice more. (下面是一些你现在就可以做的好事:捡垃圾,做一个积极的倾听者,为有需要的人做一顿饭。起初,善意的行为可能会让你感到陌生和不符合你的性格。然而,如果你练习得更多,这种感觉就会消失。)”可知,作者鼓励人们去做善事。故选A。 C An artificial intelligence (AI) tool of street view could be used to predict the risk of coronary heart disease — a condition where the heart’s arteries (动脉) are blocked, limiting blood flow to the heart by analysing neighbourhood environments, according to research. 28. What is the finding of the study? The link between the heart and environment 【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. 根据文章第二段中的“Researchers were able to track the link between these environmental elements, including the presence or absence of pollution, and the risk of coronary heart disease. (研究人员能够追踪这些环境因素(包括是否存在污染)与冠心病风险之间的联系。)”可知,该研究能够发现环境因素,如道路、建筑、绿地等的质量以及污染的存在与否,是如何影响心脏健康的,即环境如何影响心脏健康。故选B项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“The data provides urban planners and public health officials with information to design healthier living spaces and neighbourhoods. (这些数据为城市规划者和公共卫生官员提供了设计更健康的生活空间和社区的信息。)”可知,研究发现的数据可以帮助创建更多绿色和健康的社区环境。故选C项。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段中的“This is where the use of computer vision approaches may enable unique understanding of the physical and built environment. (这就是使用计算机视觉方法可以对物理和建筑环境进行独特理解的地方。)”可知,计算机视觉方法的使用可以使人们对物理环境和建筑环境有独特的理解。故选D项。 31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段中的“An artificial intelligence (AI) tool of street view could be used to predict the risk of coronary heart disease—a condition where the heart’s arteries (动脉) are blocked, limiting blood flow to the heart by analysing neighbourhood environments, according to research. (根据研究,街道视图的人工智能(AI)工具可用于预测冠心病的风险,冠心病是一种心脏动脉阻塞的疾病,通过分析邻近环境来限制流向心脏的血流。)”可知,文章主要讲述了利用街景人工智能工具预测冠心病风险的研究,并强调了这种工具在医学上的应用。故选B项。 D “Renewable energy development is a critically important component of the transition away from fossil fuels, making our air cleaner. 根据第一段中“However, bird death has become an unintended consequence of renewable energy development,(然而,鸟类死亡已成为可再生能源发展的意外后果)”及“Birds can be killed when they hit wind turbines (涡轮机) , fly into solar panels they mistake for bodies of water or get burned by the intense heat from concentrating solar power plants.(鸟类可能因撞击风力涡轮机,误将太阳能板当作水面而飞入,或被集中式太阳能发电厂的强烈热能烧伤而死亡)”可知,鸟类面临的新威胁是可再生能源设施的增加。 根据第二段中“Researchers found most birds killed at solar facilities were nonlocal and peaked during the migratory periods of April and September through October.(研究人员发现,在太阳能设施中丧生的大部分鸟类是非本地的,并在4月及9月至10月的迁徙期间达到高峰)”可知,研究发现迁徙中的鸟类比本地鸟类受太阳能设施的影响更大。 根据第三段中““The data can help inform us about the best strategies to use to minimize the deaths,” Vander Zanden said. “For example, facilities management could work with conservationists to improve the local habitat to help protect local birds or improve other parts of the species’ range where the migratory birds originate.”(范德赞登说:“这些数据可以帮助我们了解如何制定最佳策略以最大限度地减少死亡。例如,设施管理人员可以与环保主义者合作,改善当地栖息地以保护本地鸟类,或改善迁徙鸟类起源的该物种其他分布区域”)”可知,这项研究具有科学意义,可以帮助制定策略来保护鸟类。故选B。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段““Renewable energy development is a critically important component of the transition away from fossil fuels, making our air cleaner. However, bird death has become an unintended consequence of renewable energy development,” said Hannah Vander Zanden, an assistant professor of biology at the University of Florida.(“可再生能源的发展是从化石燃料转型的关键组成部分,能让我们的空气更清洁。然而,鸟类死亡已成为可再生能源发展的意外后果,”佛罗里达大学生物学助理教授Hannah Vander Zanden表示)”可知,本文主要讲述了可再生能源设施致鸟死亡成新问题,所以虽然可再生能源的发展能让我们的空气更清洁,但是也导致鸟类死亡,也就是凡事都有两面性。故选A项。 Benefits of Boredom to Embrace Boredom is good medicine for the brain. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: After nearly two hours’careful search, an amazing thing happened. Greg saw, across a field, the dog moving cautiously away. Upon seeing that, Ehlers’ face turned red, with excitement in the heart, as a deer jumping with joy. Obviously, it was full of nervousness and fear. Ehlers and Greg tried their best to coax Rosie and made it calm down. Eventually they succeeded in coaxing the animal to them. Its nervousness and fear were replaced with joy. It just started touching Ehlers’ face, which made him in a good mood at the moment. Ehlers called Jeff and Lisa again and waited for their arrival. During that time, Ehlers and Greg played with Rosie. Just 25 minutes later, Jeff and Lisa arrived. Seeing them, Rosie barked and ran to them. They hugged Rosie with excitement. Touched deeply, Jeff and Lisa could never say thank you enough. And then they returned to Minnesota and became best friends. “It’s good to know there’s still some one out there who cares enough to go to that kind of trouble,” says Lisa of Ehlers’ rescue effort. “I figured whoever lost the dog was probably just as close to it as I am to my dogs,” says Ehlers. “If it had been my dog, I’d hope that somebody would be willing to go that extra mile.” 词汇积累 行为类: ①成功做某事:succeed in doing sth.→manage to do sth ②代替:replace→take the place of ③触摸:touch→feel 情感类 ①激动地:with excitement→excitedly ②紧张:nervousness→tension ③恐惧:fear→horror 【点睛】【高分句型1】It just started touching Ehlers’ face, which made him in a good mood at the moment. 2】I figured whoever lost the dog was probably just as close to it as I am to my dogs(运用了whoever引导主语从句,as…as固定句型) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
