Sometimes, using hand gestures can bring more information and be more convenient than words, especially when you are speaking to someone with no language in common. But the same gesture can mean something quite impolite to a person from a different cultural background.
"V" Shape
In many countries, if you have your index and middle fingers pointed up in the "V" shape. It stands for winning. However, when you make the sign, be sure to have the front of your palm facing outward instead of inward, because showing people the back of your hand is impolite in some countries like the UK and Australia.
Finger Snap (打响指)
Snapping your thumb and middle finger over and over may mean one is trying to remind someone of something forgotten. While, in Latin America, snapping_themmeans asking one to hurry up. But one thing you should remember is that, in many cultures, snapping fingers close to someone's face is considered to be a rude gesture.
Thumbs up
In most parts of the world, the thumbs-up sign means the same thing. You are basically saying that "Everything is OK" or "You are so great" to others. But you'd better avoid using it in the Middle East or West Africa because it is considered to be really impolite.

What would life be like if you were a rocker, a soccer player, a professor(教授) at Stanford University, and a Nobel Prize winner? Carolyn Bertozzi from the US lives such a cool life!
Bertozzi, 56, shares this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry with Barry Sharpless (US) and Morten Meldal (Denmark). She became 2022's only woman winner in science and the eighth woman to receive the chemistry prize in history.
Bertozzi won the prize for studying the sugar coats of cells( 细 胞 ). She has found a smart way to connect cells by connecting their sugar coats. The cells then have a green color so that scientists can see clearly where they are and how they move. According to the University of California, Berkeley, this finding "offered a springboard (基础)for a wide range of applications(应用)", such as developing better tests for infectious diseases (传染病) and new treatments for cancer (癌症).
Despite her great achievements, Bertozzi said she was not very interested in chemistry until her second year at Harvard University. "The professors intentionally( 故意地) made the class very difficult," she told Chemistry World magazine. "My classmates complained a lot, but it matched my brain."
Apart from doing science studies, Bertozzi has lived a colorful life. She was a keyboarder(键盘手) in a rock band. "I even used to think about majoring in music," she said. She also played soccer, and won an athletic scholarship (体育奖学金) from Harvard.
As a female scientist, Bertozzi tries to promote gender equality( 性别平等). "In the late 1980s, maybe 10 percent of the students were female," she told news magazine Chemical & Engineering News. "There were maybe one or two women in a lab, so we tried to support each other by starting a monthly get-together for all the women students in the department." In 2022, Bertozzi won an award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her work to increase diversity (性别多元) in science.
71.Why did Bertozzi win 2022's Nobel Prize?
A.Because she invented a new treatment for cancer.
B.Because she is the eighth female professor at Stanford University.
C.Because she found a way to link cells and make them clearer to see.
72.How might Bertozzi describe her chemistry class in her second year at Harvard University?
A.Interesting and not too hard.
B.Boring and simple.
C.Difficult and boring.
73.What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A.Bertozzi once wrote songs for a rock band.
B.Bertozzi once chose music as her major.
C.Bertozzi lived a colorful life apart from doing research.
74.How did Bertozzi promote gender equality in the 1980s?
A.She set an award for women in science.
B.She increased the number of female students by 10 percent.
C.She helped start a monthly get-together for women to support each other.
75.What is the passage mainly about?

A lot of people are always asking, "How do I improve my English?" There are many possible answers, and here is some good advice.
Be responsible for (对……负责任) your own learning
101. But who is really responsible for making sure you learn English well? Nobody but you. Make sure you are the one who is responsible for your own learning.
Immerse yourself in English as much as possible
Immersing yourself in a language means putting yourself in an environment where only that language is spoken. 102. Of course this isn't always possible, but you can do some things to immerse yourself in English from time to time.
☆Watch TV and movies in English
If there are English programs on your TV, watch them. If they have subtitles (the words written in your language), see if they can be turned off. 103. Most DVDs are great because you can choose the language you want to hear.
☆Speak English to your friends
Get a conversation buddy (friend) and speak in English as much as possible. If it is a person whose native (本国 的 ) language is the same as your own, you may feel silly speaking in English at first. But don't worry. 104. Finding friends whose native language is English is even better. Ask your friend to correct you when needed.
☆Study or travel to an English-speaking country
Of course the best way to immerse yourself in the English language is to live in an all English environment. You'll find yourself surrounded ( 包 围 ) with the language everywhere you go. 105. However, it is surely a very helpful experience.
A. If you do that, English is all around you.
B. It may be a more difficult and expensive choice for you.
C. Continue to do it and it will become more natural to you.
D. Don't worry if you make mistakes — it will actually help you to progress.
E. Some people even cover them with paper so that they can't see the words.
F. Surely you have teachers, reading materials and websites helping you with your English.

You must be familiar with this situation of your family: Dad is driving, while Mom is telling him where to go. He is sure that they should turn left at the next crossing. But she says it is not for the place they'll visit at all. Who has a better sense of direction? Men or women?
Both of them do, a new study says, but in quite different ways.
Men and women, some Canadian researchers have found, each have different ways to find their way. Men look quickly at well-marked buildings and then head off in what they think is the right direction. Women, however, always picture the route first and then follow it in their head.
"Generally speaking, women are more exact(准确的)," said Edward Cornell, who led the study, "while men are a little bit faster and a little bit more intuitive(凭直觉的)." The difference between their personalities makes up part of the reason for their different senses of direction.
"In fact," added Edward Cornell, "the sense of direction isn't one skill but two skills."
The first skill is the "survey way". This is when you see an area from above just as there is a map in your mind. You can see, for example, where the hospital is, where the parking lot is and that the supermarket is on the parking lot's right.
The second one is the "route way". This is when you use a series of directions. You start from the hospital, then turn left, turn right, go uphill—and then you see the supermarket in the end.
Men are more likely to use the survey way while women are more likely to use one route and follow directions. Both work, and neither is better.
Introduction: Dad and mom often 106. whether they should turn left at a crossing.
Question: Who has a better sense of direction, men or women?

A.How Bertozzi worked to win a Nobel Prize.

Be responsible for (对……负责任) your own learning
101. But who is really responsible for making sure you learn English well? Nobody but you. Make sure you are the one who is responsible for your own learning.
Immerse yourself in English as much as possible

☆Watch TV and movies in English
If there are English programs on your TV, watch them. If they have subtitles (the words written in your language), see if they can be turned off. 103. Most DVDs are great because you can choose the language you want to hear.
☆Speak English to your friends

But don't worry. 104. Finding friends whose native language is English is even better. Ask your friend to correct you when needed.
