After attending another parent meeting regarding my 7-year-old child’s behaviour, I didn’t know what to do. It was the second school we had tried for Nathan and, as always, everything was being done for my child’s needs. It was also having bad effects on Nathan. He would come home and say, “ Mom , I hate my life. I do not want to live anymore.” I was afraid that my son was beginning to suffer from depression and that I was losing him. We needed help.
By the age of seven, Nathan had already had three surgeries for his ears. He was in great pain, regardless of pain medication, which made it difficult for him to learn or pay attention. Despite Nathan’s bad condition, staff at two previous schools seemed as though they didn’t care. They often forgot to deal with his medication. As a result of many times of ear infections, Nathan had hearing loss. To make things worse, Nathan’s speech was not very good. Children would play a trick on him and Nathan began to fall behind in study.
When I first set foot into Ripley House Charter School, I knew this was the school for my son. It felt positive from the moment I entered. From the start, Mrs. Elsen and her staff heard my concern over Nathan. Mrs. Elsen addressed my concern, not with empty words but with action.
That day, Nathan came home from his first day of school saying, “ Mom, I love school !” By the end of the week he was saying “ Mom, I like my life. I have a good life.” Ripley House Charter School gave me my son back and saved our lives. Thank you for giving me back what we had lost ----HOPE.

C. Doubtful D. Negative.
7. The underlined word “addressed” in Paragraph 3 probably means “___________”.
A. spoke out B. dealt with
C. listened to D. believed in
C
Nowadays, saving wild animals has become very important. Cities growing bigger and industries making more things have hurt the places where animals live. This has caused many kinds of animals to become fewer and fewer, which is bad for nature and for us.
Protecting wild animals is important because it keeps nature in balance. Every animal, even the tiny ones, has a job in nature. For example, bees help plants make seeds, which gives food and homes to other animals. If we don’t have bees, it can cause problems for all the other animals.
Also, saving animals helps keep different kinds of the same animal. This is good because it makes animals more able to deal with changes in their world, like the weather getting warmer. By keeping animals safe, we might find new medicines or learn new things from them.
We can help animals in many ways, like making special areas for them to live in safety, and making laws to stop people from hurting them. One good thing that happened is the American bald eagle getting more and more after people worked hard to save it.
But saving animals is not just for governments and big groups. Everyone can help. We can make good choices in our lives, like using less plastic and buying things that don’t hurt the earth. This way, we can all help protect animals.
8. Why is protecting animals important?
A. It keeps nature in balance. B. It makes cities bigger.
C. It helps industries grow. D. It increases the number of people.
9. Why is having many kinds of the same animal important?
A. It helps them survive changes.
B. It makes one kind of animal more.
C. It stops new animals from coming.
D. It makes sure one kind of animal wins.
10. What is an example of animals being saved?
A Bees disappearing more.
B. The weather getting warmer.
C. The American bald eagle coming back.
D. The dodo bird disappearing.
11. How can people help save animals?
A. By using more plastic.
B. By not caring about what they buy.
C. By buying things that hurt the earth.
D. By making good choices that help the earth.

China’s Terraced Fields: A Cultural and Natural Heritage
In the heart of China, there are breathtaking landscapes that are not just a feast for the eyes but also a testament to human ingenuity. These are the terraced fields, or rice paddies, built on the slopes of mountains and hills. Unlike flat fields, these terraces are shaped like steps, allowing water to flow from one level to another, making it possible to grow rice in areas where it would otherwise be difficult.
The most famous of these terraced fields can be found in Yuanyang, Yunnan Province. Known as the Yuanyang Rice Terraces, they stretch over vast areas, forming a sea of green during the planting season and a mirror-like landscape when flooded for the rice to grow. These terraces are not just a marvel of engineering; they are also a living cultural heritage, reflecting the wisdom and traditions of the Hani people who have been farming them for over 1,300 years.
The Hani people have developed a unique water management system to support their terraced fields. Water from the mountain forests is channeled through a network of ditches and canals, ensuring that each terrace gets the water it needs. This system not only supports rice farming but also maintains the ecological balance of the region.
In addition to their practical function, the terraced fields have become a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world. Their beauty changes with the seasons, offering different sights throughout the year. In spring, the terraces are flooded and gleam in the sunlight, while in summer they are covered in lush green. Autumn brings the golden harvest, and winter transforms them into a tranquil, snow-covered landscape.
12. What are terraced fields?
A. Fields built on flat land for growing wheat.
B. Fields built on the slopes of mountains for growing rice.
C. Gardens for growing flowers on hills.
D Parks for people to visit and relax on mountains.
13. Where are the most famous terraced fields in China located?
A. In the north of Beijing. B. In the west of Shanghai.
C. In the south of Yunnan. D. In the east of Guangzhou.
14. Who are the people that have been farming the Yuanyang Rice Terraces for over 1,300 years?
A. The Han people. B. The Hani people. C. The Yi people. D. The Miao people.
15. What is one of the main reasons the terraced fields in Yuanyang attract tourists?
A. They are used for growing vegetables.
B. They are home to rare animals.
C. They change their appearance with the seasons.
D. They are the largest flat fields in China.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
When communicating with others, we often focused on what we should say.____16____ Listening well means not just understanding the words or the information being exchanged, but also understanding the emotions the speaker is trying to express. Here are some tips to help you become an engaged (专注的) listener.
____17____. You can’t listen in an engaged way if you’re checking your phone from time to time or thinking about something else. You need to stay focused in order to pick up the differences hard to notice and important non-verbal implications (暗示) in a conversation. If you find it hard to concentrate on some speakers, try repeating their words over in your head—it’ll strengthen their message and help you stay focused.
Avoid interrupting or trying to change the conversation to your concerns. By saying something like, “If you think that’s bad, let me tell you what happened to me.” ____18____ You can’t concentrate on what someone’s saying if you’re forming what you’re going to say next.
____19____ In order to communicate effectively with someone, you don’t have to like them or agree with their ideas, values, or opinions. However, you do need to set aside your judgment and take away blame and criticism in order to fully understand them. The most difficult communication, when successfully conducted, can often lead to an unlikely connection with someone.
Provide feedback. If there seems to be a disconnection, reflect what has been said. “What I’m hearing is,” and “Sounds like you are saying,” are great ways to reflect back. Don’t simply repeat what the speaker has said word by word, though— you’ll sound dishonest or ignorant. ____20____ Ask questions to make certain points clear: “What do you mean when you say...” or “Is this what you mean?”
A. Try to set aside judgment.
B. Focus fully on the speaker.
C. Speak frankly about your former boss.
D. Instead, express what the speaker’s words mean to you.
E. Listening is not the same as waiting for your turn to talk.
F. Show respect to the speaker and put your phone away in your pocket.
G. However, effective communication is less about talking and more about listening.

My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s along with other immigrants from India. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D. Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then.
It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn’t have heavy coats or warm clothes. We didn’t have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn’t have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn’t have a US driver’s license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D., and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis.
Since I was three years old, I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual,Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, “I see you on the way every day. Don’t you feel cold without coats?”My father responded,“We didn’t expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas.”Valerie said,“Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?”
Paragraph 1:
Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy.

Paragraph 2:
Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family.

E Listening is not the same as waiting for your turn to talk.

【答案】Hi Coward,
I’m sorry to know that you have trouble adapting yourself to senior high school.
However, the situation is easy to change if you take my suggestions into consideration. First of all, why not communicate with your teacher face to face? By doing this, your teacher will know your inner thoughts and help you solve this problem. What’s more, if I were you, I would be engaged in various kinds of activities held by class actively. More importantly, it would be a good idea if you made some friends with common interests. If you do this, you can share happiness and sadness with them and help you get to know them to get rid of loneliness at high school. I hope you will find these ideas useful, and fit in well with your new school.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)

My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s, along with other immigrants from India.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy. He said, “That would be great. That’s very kind of you.” Then my sister and brother got into Valerie’s car on the freezing cold day. After expressing their thanks to Valerie, they greeted John with a smile. After a while, a faint flush rose to my brother’s cheeks because of the warm wind in the car, and my sister had a broad smile on her face. Seeing that, Valerie decided to continue the act from then on.
Paragraph 2:
Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family. It just started with this small act of offering a ride, and afterwards the relationship between the two families gradually deepened. We kids have been close friends with John. Valerie and my mother also became very close. Valerie and her family tried to help us in other aspects, such as offering us warm clothes we were in urgent need of at that time. And my mother loved to cook Indian food for Valerie’s family. We all believed that our friendship would last forever.
