College visits are important. Before you commit years of your life and money to a school, be sure you’re choosing a place that is a good match for your personality and interests. You can’t get the “feel” of a school from any guidebook, so be sure to visit the campus. Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit.
Explore on Your Own
Of course you should take the official campus tour, but be sure to allow time to hang around on your own. The trained tour guides will show you a school’s selling points. But the oldest and prettiest buildings don’t give you the entire picture of a college. Try to walk the extra mile and get the complete picture of the campus.
Read the Bullet in Boards
When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boards. They provide an easy way to see what’s happening on campus. The ads for lectures, clubs and plays can tell you what’s going on outside the classrooms.
Eat in the Dining Hall
You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall. Try to sit with students if you can. Do the students seem happy or stressed? Also, is the food good? Are there enough healthy options? Many admission offices will give prospective students coupons (优惠券) for free meals in the dining halls.
Visit a Class in Your Major
If you know what you want to study, a class visit makes a lot of sense. You’ll get to observe other students in your field and see how involved they arc in classroom discussion. Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major. Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit-most colleges don’t allow visitors to drop in at class unannounced.
Talk to Lots of Students
Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to talk to students who aren’t getting paid to impress you. These important conversations can often provide you with information about college life that isn’t part of the admission script. Few university officials will tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking or studying, but a group of random students might.
31.What is the best way to know about a college in an official campus tour?
A.To walk around the campus by yourself.
B.To hire a trained tour guide.

32.Reading the bulletin boards can help you
A.decide the major you want to study
B.learn about the after-class activities on campus
C.get free coupons from the admission offices
D.find out the options of healthy food
33.If you plan to attend a class on campus, .
A.drop in at a class in your major B.ask the professor for permission
C.make an appointment in advance D.have a talk with students before class
34.To get a real idea of the college during a visit, it’s best to talk to .
A.famous professors B.campus tour guides
C.admission officers D.random students
35.Where does the passage probably come from?

In the city I live in, we have a small local national park full of trees. I like that place very much, although I do wish it was bigger.
One day, I was walking around in the park along a path (小路) when I saw a beautiful squirrel (松鼠) lying in the middle of the path. I stopped and found that there was something wrong with one of its legs.
Just at that time, a man with two little kids was behind me. They were my neighbors. They were going up the same path. I said hello to them. The dad asked me, “Why are you standing still here?” I said,“Look! Here is a beautiful squirrel, but....” Noticing the squirrel, one of the kids shouted, “Quickly dad, catch it for me. I want to put it in my birdcage.” His brother nodded, asking their dad to catch the squirrel.
Then I stopped them.“Please wait. Do you really want to catch it and put it into the birdcage?” My neighbor said, “Yes. I will catch it and take it home.” I said angrily, “Animals are our friends and this is the last place in our city that the squirrel can live in. We must protect them. If we are kind to this tiny animal then we can start to be kind to bigger ones.” My neighbor smiled and said,“You misunderstood me. I will take it home and cure (治疗) it and when it is well, I will take it back to the park and set it free. Do you come long with me?”After hearing his words, I became happy. Tisha was the silent one in the family. She spoke very little and kept to herself. In school she had no friends, which made her parents wonder when she would make friends, laugh and be like other children. When Tisha was seven, her cousin Shalini from the United States visited her.
“Say hi to your cousin, Tisha,” her mother told her. Tisha mumbled (咕哝) a hello and went off. On her very first day, Shalini visited the neighbours’ houses, and made friends with everyone. When Tisha returned home in the evening, she saw that Shalini had become an appealing girl in the family and in the neighbourhood. Tisha felt a little lost. Her mother didn’t know it and told her that Shalini would sleep with her that night.
To avoid talking to Shalini, Tisha got into bed early and pretended to be fast asleep. But the moment Shalini came in, Tisha started to make changes. “See, what I have got for you, Tisha. I wanted it to be a big surprise,” said Shalini, who handed Tisha a box. Carefully, Tisha opened the box. It was a huge multi-coloured globe (地球仪). And it seemed to Tisha that Shalini and she were traveling around the world on the globe. A woman who lost one leg to cancer is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon runs.
Jacky Hunt-Broersma set her goal in mid-June. And since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon. Most of the time, she averages (平均) just over five hours to complete a run. If she keeps successfully completing marathon runs every day, she will reach her goal by September.

Charles Rose, an eight-year-old boy, lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.
There was a river nearby. On its bank stood the small house of a poor fisherman. He and his wife worked very hard and they were too poor to send their son, Joe, to school.
Charles called at the fisherman’s one day to look for his dog. He found Joe sitting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures. “No, I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. If I could only learn to read and write, I should be the happiest boy in the world.” Charles said, “I can teach you that though I’m a little boy.”
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe.
Some time after, Mr. Rose was told that Charles often went to the house of the fisherman. Fearing that Charles went out in their boat, Mr. Rose went to the river in search of him. Not seeing Charles, he grew uneasy and went to the fisherman’s. There a pleasant sight met his eyes. Charles was sitting at the table and Joe was reading to him.

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown.Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, “You’re nervous and that’s okay. Everyone is afraid of high school.” I denied (否认) it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.
On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn’t figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn’t think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right.
Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.
Since then, I’ve been elected vice monitor of my class, which wasn’t much of a victory since only three people ran for the four positions.
It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something that any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some out-of-class activities because you’ll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn’t straight A’s.
Most important of all, be who you are, whether you’re a “fool”, an athlete, or a lower grader. Don’t try to pretend to be someone you’re not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.

How I Turned to Be Optimistic
I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times. ”
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

Yesterday after work, the boss told me I was fired. When I walked along a riverbed sadly, I suddenly realized it was New Year’s Day, a day to start afresh.
I passed by a man holding his son, one or two years old. The baby’s face was in pure joy, and his innocent eyes were full of wonder. The simple sweetness of the baby made me moved.
Walking on, I saw a young couple repairing their bicycle. They smiled at me and said, “Happy New Year!” I smiled and wished them the same. It was a simple thing, but for a moment it brought me a sudden joy.
I kept walking, enjoying the cheerful singing of birds. With people around laughing out loud, an old woman immersed herself in her sewing. She didn’t seem either happy or sad. A feeling of timeless peace flowed through me and all fear of what the future might bring disappeared. I thanked her in my heart, and moved on.
As I reached home, I was filled with great thanks and hope for life, which took me a long time to find. Actually, happiness could be simple and easy. Now I knew whatever the New Year would bring, there would be joy and enough love to help me through the hard times we all had to face.

It was the final part of the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Mexico. With jus700 meters to go, Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother Jonny, was in the lead. Alistair pushed himself towards the finish line in the burning heat, but as he came round the corner, he saw his brother about to fall onto the track Alistair had to choose -brotherly love, or a chance to win the race?
For Alistair, the choice was clear. His brother was in trouble. He had to help. Alistair ran towards Jonny, caught him and started pulling him towards the finish line. My new teacher is cool. Her name is Paula so we call her Miss Paula.
The first time we met her she said we are going to be good friends and that good friends are always nice to each other.
Miss Paula has been teaching us a lot of things. Some of us used to get in trouble for talking in the hallway (过道). Miss Paula just smiled and asked “What’s this?” So I told her what happened. Miss Paula put it near the window to make it dry. She said the sun had been waiting for such an important job as this and would be happy to help us.

The African grey parrot’s ability to talk and mimic sounds makes it a charming companion. African grey owners often report that their greys oftentimes talk in context and can understand their people’s emotions. The African grey parrot is not just a top talker — this bird is also known for its extreme intelligence, which gives it the name “The Einstein s of the bird world”.
The bird is medium-sized, dusty-looking and almost pigeon-like. It has a bright red tail, intelligent orange eyes, and a stunning scalloped (扇形的) pattern to its feathers. Its diet in the wild consists mostly of nuts, seeds, fruits, and leafy matter.
At home, African greys need plenty of toys that challenge their intelligence, such as food searching and puzzle toys. Nutri-Berries by Lafeber Company are a perfect choice, which, with a balance of grains, seeds and other nutrients in the shape of a berry, encourages African greys to hold, bite off, and even do other things, just as they do in the wild.
African greys seem especially affected by stress and disturbing noise in their environment and can be put more at ease by placing one corner of the cage against a wall compared to in the middle of a room.
African grey parrots are more likely to suffer from lack of vitamin A/beta-carotene, and therefore benefit from eating vegetables high in beta-carotene, such as cooked sweet potato and fresh kale. Lack of vitamin D is another concern, especially for greys on a poor diet. Offering a balanced, pill-shaped diet, such as Nutri-Berries, helps prevent vitamin and mineral shortage.
23.Why are African grey parrots called “The Einstein s of the bird world”?
A.Due to their talking ability. B.Because of their brain size.
C.Owing to their rich emotions. D.On account of their intelligence.
24.What can “Nutri-Berries” probably be?
A.A type of round fruit. B.Puzzle toys for birds.
C.A brand of bird food. D.Wild intelligence games.
25.What is the characteristic of African grey parrots?
A.They are smart and love to have fun. B.They are dusty-looking with blue eyes.
C.They seldom get ill despite the lack of vitamin. D.They prefer to stay in the middle of a room.
26.Where can we most probably find the text?
A.In a travel guide. B.In science fiction.
C.On a shopping website. D.In a wildlife magazine.

My dad, Greg Newman, had wanted to be a race car driver, but things didn’t work out for him. So I guess having a son who could become a race car driver was the next best thing. Don’t get me wrong — Dad didn’t push me into racing. In fact, when I was about 10 years old, my dad was afraid that driving a car wasn’t my dream. So he took the racing away from me. I wasn’t very happy with that decision. It wasn’t long before Dad realized that racing was what I loved.
At four, Dad bought me my first Quarter Midget (袖珍赛车) and that’s really where it started for us. Back then, Dad coached me. He would stick out (伸出) his foot in the path of the race car, and then tell me to exactly hit his foot. By repeating this again and again, Dad believed that I would be faster and sharper on the race track.
Dad worked really long hours at his car repair business to make money so that I could race each weekend. I can remember that every night before he turned off the lights in the garage, Dad would tell me: “Don’t forget to kiss your race car good night.” He was trying to teach me that if I show respect, it’s returned. He wanted me to show thankfulness and respect for my race car and for all the hard work that we and many others had put into the dream.
My dad, my mom and my sister gave up a lot of things to help me race. For us, there was no better moment than winning the 50th running of the Daytona 500 in 2018. That evening in February 2018, I knew I had gotten a good push. I could hear the excitement. My father couldn’t speak a word, and when he got to Victory Lane (车道), he nearly knocked me over and gave me such a big hug.
41.Why did Greg Newman stop his son to race when his son was 10 years old?

Before I even started school, people felt that I was not going to amount to much. At the age of four, I started speech lessons because even I could not speak well enough to be understood.
First grade was a struggle. I not only had difficulty speaking, but I was expected to learn to read and I just couldn’t do it. My parents grew more and more frustrated. They bought books and offered great rewards if I could read one of them from start to finish to them. Well, with my speech problems and now my reading problems, I did not like to do reading and so refused to do it whenever possible.
Second grade was not much better. It was in the second grade that the teacher decided that I needed special education. I remember the days of taking the physical exams. However, after all that, they decided that I did not qualify for special education.
It was in third grade that a new school was built close to where I lived. I remember going there with my parents and helping to get the school ready so that we could transfer (转学). It was a happy day that we started school at Vandalia. However, things did not get better as my parent expected.
It was now time for fifth grade. Mrs. Wake field was my teacher, and if ever there was a teacher that deserved a gold star, it was her. She did not make me feel upset. Instead, she helped me in so many ways and built my self-confidence so that I actually did believe that I could do something special. And that is just what I did.
For the past 22 years, I have been a fifth grade teacher. Because of Mrs. Wake field’s influence in my life, I am now encouraging students who have had difficulties in their lives to believe that they can overcome and become someone. I have won a large number of awards but I know that all of them belong to one fifth grade teacher who believed in me and challenged me to be all that I could be.
I still have a class picture of her with her fifth grade class hanging on the wall of my office, encouraging other teachers to reach out to their students.

I first heard the Spanish language in 2017 while lining up to ride the London Eye. Two boys were murmuring (嘟囔) something in the sweetest language. I asked them what the language is, and they told me it was Spanish.
In the fall of the same year, I selected Spanish as a compulsory foreign language course throughout the next six years in my junior and senior high schools.
I had a burning desire and persistence to learn Spanish well. My interest and passion helped me succeed.
Spanish trills were quite difficult for me at the very beginning. I repeatedly tried to figure out where to place my tongue to pronounce perfect trills.
There is no easy short-term solution to master a foreign language. Spanish conjugations (动词变位) are much more complicated than English ones, so I practiced more. The cycle of learning, forgetting and memorizing continued.
Reaching milestones has always been important. I set up several goals for learning Spanish in 12 semesters. For example, I drew up a plan last winter to pass the DELE B2 test before graduating from my high school.
I usually split up my tasks into six sections — vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, writing and oral practices. I regularly read Spanish books, recited(背诵) words and phrases, and kept on doing grammar exercises. I did listening exercises every day while showering or bathing. I wrote emails or letters to my Spanish friends as practice and took all opportunities to talk with my Spanish teachers and people I met online to enhance my oral Spanish.
I believe that success only comes with practice, patience and persistence. There’s no end to learning!

I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing.
Obviously, that was something she should not go through phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t noticed Kate had sat up.
She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, clearning up and holding on.

C.To visit the oldest and prettiest buildings.
D.To take pictures of the campus.
32.Reading the bulletin boards can help you
A.decide the major you want to study
B.learn about the after-class activities on campus
C.get free coupons from the admission offices
D.find out the options of healthy food
33.If you plan to attend a class on campus, .
A.drop in at a class in your major B.ask the professor for permission
C.make an appointment in advance D.have a talk with students before class
34.To get a real idea of the college during a visit, it’s best to talk to .
A.famous professors B.campus tour guides
C.admission officers D.random students
35.Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A news report. B.A tourist poster.
C.An educational journal. D.A geographical magazine.

In the city I live in, we have a small local national park full of trees. I like that place very much, although I do wish it was bigger.

It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”
However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Jacky said she felt like giving up at 24 kilometers and began to cry. “I had a total emotional breakdown. I was like, ‘I just can’t do this.’ ” she said.
Jacky is documenting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following. As she nears the end of her goal, Jacky is hoping to inspire a single thought in others. She tells people, “You’re stronger than you think and you’re able to do so much more.”

The next day, Mr. Rose took Charles to town, and gave him books for himself and Joe, with writing paper, pens and ink. Charles was the happiest boy in the world when he came home. He ran to Joe, his heart beating with joy.

It was so big that I could knock someone out with it!

记叙文
1.(2023-2024学年上学期.天津市南开区.高一期中)
It was the final part of the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Mexico. With jus700 meters to go, Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother Jonny, was in the lead. Alistair pushed himself towards the finish line in the burning heat, but as he came round the corner, he saw his brother about to fall onto the track Alistair had to choose -brotherly love, or a chance to win the race?
For Alistair, the choice was clear. His brother was in trouble. He had to help. Alistair ran towards Jonny, caught him and started pulling him towards the finish line. Alistair then pushed his brother over the line. The move put Jonny in second place and Alistair himself in third. It was an unexpected end to the race, but Alistair did not want to discuss it with the media. He just wanted to see his younger brother who had been rushed to the medical area.
The Brownlee brothers have been doing triathlons since they were children “Obviously, when your older brother is doing it, you think it’s a cool thing to do,’says Jonny. Alistair says that they encourage each other as much as they can where they train. Despite argument s over “stupid things” now and then, Alistair agrees than having a brother is an advantage. “Throughout my entire life, I’ve had my brother trying to beat me at everything I do. It has been a fantastic driving force.”
Watched by millions, the ending to the race has varied opinions: should the brothers have been disqualified or highly praised for their actions? But for Alistair his decision was easy to explain: “Mum wouldn’t have been happy if I’d left Jonny behind.” At that moment, he was no longer an athlete aiming for a me dal - he was just a brother.
36.Why did Alistair get third place only?
A.Because he fell onto the track accidentally.
B.Because he was overtaken by another athlete.
C.Because he stopped to give his brother a hand.
D.Because he struggled with the burning heat.
37.What can be learnt from Paragraph 2?

A.Because he thought racing was dangerous.
B.Because he worried that his son didn’t like racing.

D.Because he couldn’t afford the money.

A.training his son to race
B.working hard to make money
C.buying his son a mini racing car
D.changing his job as a race car driver
43.Why did Greg Newman let his son hit his foot?
A.To improve his son’s skill. B.To help his son to be braver.
C.To have fun with his son. D.To make his son more careful.
44.Greg Newman asked his son to kiss his race car good night to ________.
A.get help from his family
B.treat the race car as his son
C.feel grateful that he could follow his dream
D.develop a close relationship with his race car

Charles Ⅴ (1500-1558), Holy Roman Emperor, once said, “I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men and German to my horse.”
39.Why did the author begin to learn Spanish?
A.He was attracted by the beauty of Spanish. B.His friends encouraged him to learn it.
C.It was a compulsory course at his school. D.He admired Holy Roman Emperor Charles Ⅴ.

A.His short-term learning plans. B.His goals for learning Spanish.
C.The ways he practiced Spanish. D.The ways he prepared for the DELE B2 test.

A.Creative and hardworking. B.Patient and modest.

根据第二段的句子“Soon, I heard her screaming, ‘Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!’(很快,我听到她尖叫:‘把你的鞋拿走!为什么在我的床下!’)”可知,Kate很生气是因为作者把鞋放到了她的床下。故选D项。
32.推理判断题。根据第四段的句子“All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t noticed Kate had sat up.(突然,一股温暖的同情之情涌上我的心头。慢慢地,我收起铅笔,收回书本,整理床铺,把袜子清走,扫地,甚至打扫了她的那边。 我太投入工作了,甚至没有注意到凯特已经坐起来了)”可以推出,作者收拾房间主要是为了表示她对Kate的关心。故选C项。
33.推理判断题。根据第一段的句子“I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier.(我从来不是很整洁的人,而我的室友凯特却非常有条理。 她的东西各有各的位置,而我的东西总是藏在某个地方。她甚至给每样东西都贴标签。 我总是寻找一切。随着时间的推移,凯特变得更整洁,而我变得更混乱)”可知,作者是通过讲述她和Kate的不同来展开第一段的内容的。故选B项。
34.词义猜测题。根据上一句话“From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill.(从她最后的谈话中,我马上就知道她奶奶病得很重)”和划线词前面的内容“When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers(挂断电话后,她很快就钻进被窝里)”可知,在得知奶奶病重后,Kate肯定是钻进被窝里哭了。
