Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous
for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital
city of the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of
its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to
remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of
traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check
out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping
at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums
to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to
explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for
celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city’s
museums and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
●Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking
between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
●Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are
generally cheaper than in the city center.
●Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
●Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will
give you a unique point of view of the city.

As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a
leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was
awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his
birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework
clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化).
“Within10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will
be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall
and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of
Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that
small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting
sustainable (可持续的 ) crops, using new technologies for water treatment and
focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia,
and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming
philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can
create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of
desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to
water.”
By September2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20
pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that
some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to

plant l million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the
programme to Algeria and Morocco.

A. They fired her enthusiasm for helping others.
B. They helped her better understand her father.
C. They made her decide to leave the country.

25. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?
A. Cold weather. B. Soil pollution
C. Forest damage D. Low rainfall.
26. Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia?
A. To create job opportunities for young people.
B. To promote the protection of their farmland.
C. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers.
D. To help the children obtain a basic education.
27. Which of the following can be the best title to the text?
A. Saving Water in Africa B. Fighting Poverty in North Africa

There are as many kinds of careers as there are people. They vary greatly in the
type of work involved and in the ways they influence a person’s life. The kind of
career you have can affect your life in many ways. By making wise decisions
concerning your career, you can help yourself build the life you want. To do that, you
need as much information as possible. The more you know about yourself, the better
able you will be to choose a satisfying career.
What do people hope to obtain from a career? Some people desire a high income.
Some hope for fame. Others seek for adventure. Still others intend to serve people and
make the world a better place. Before you begin to explore career fields, you should
determine your values, your interests, and your aptitudes that will make you
competent for your future work. Most people are happiest in jobs that fit their values,
interests, and skills. Each person has many values, which vary in strength. For
example, money is the strongest value for some people — that is, wealth is more
important to them than anything else. As a result, they focus their thoughts, behaviour,
and emotions on the goal of earning a high income. Other values include devoting to
religion, taking risks, spending time with family, and helping others.
Before making a career decision, you can ask yourself what is most important to
you and examine your beliefs to better know your values. For example, is it important
to you to work as a member of a team? Or would you rather be in charge or work
alone? If working alone or being in charge is important to you, independence is
probably one of your primary values.

Have you ever wondered what an American high school is really like? 36
A typical American high school has several large buildings and enough space for
about 1,500 students. 37 When students first arrive at school, they go straight
to their lockers (寄存柜,有锁存物柜) to put away or get their textbooks and to hang
up their outdoor clothes. As American textbooks are expensive, students would rather
rent than buy them. 38
American students have different types of school transport. They usually take a
yellow school bus or walk to school if they live close enough. 39 When they
turn 16 years of age, most take a free driving class at school for one term. If students
earn passing grades in the class and also pass their state driver’s exam, they can begin
driving themselves to school.
40 They must take science, math, English and social studies. They can
choose art, homemaking, fashion design and other classes. In some schools students
are required to take one or more of the following special classes: health education,
physical education or foreign language studies. Students move to different classrooms
for each subject. This is because each teacher has their own classroom. There is a five-
minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry to their next class.
The regular school day usually ends early in the afternoon. After school more
than half of the students are involved in after-school activities. These activities include
sports-especially football, basketball, baseball and soccer or clubs, such as yearbook,

书面表达:
During the wonderful summer holiday, I did many meaningful and impressive
things, one of which is washing dishes after dinner. At first, I carefully carried the dirty
dishes to the kitchen and put all the dishes in the sink. Then I turned on the water tap
over the sink and added some detergent(洗涤剂) to the water. Maybe I put it too much,
so soon the sink was full of bubbles. It was just like a bubble bath for dishes and bowls.
I caught a bowl to wash. It was too slippery. “Pang!” The bowl slipped from my fingers.
It dropped into the sink and broke another bowl and a dish. It was terrible! There was
only one dish left. At that moment, my mother suddenly appeared by my side with
her mouth widely open. I thought she was going to punish me, but she just burst into
laughter and encouraged me to do a better job next time.
