Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.
Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully focused. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert, and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.
As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing. Going out on to the crags (悬崖), I saw how you could learn to read the rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to adjust their bodies on to the stone. Watching them, I wanted to possess that skillful “language”.
My progress happened when I worked for the Caingorms National Park Authority.Guiding my explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady too. Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal achievement. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own curiosity, I saw that rock climbing need not be a process of testing oneself against anything. Rather, the intensity of focus could develop a person into another way of being.
Spending so much time in high and st ony places has transformed my view on the world and our place in it. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology (地质学), rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.
4. What does the writer find important in climbing?
A. Balance. B. Concentration.
C. Determination. D. Perseverance.
5. What does the writer learn from Nan Shepherd?
A. Climbing goes together with nature.
B. Every mountain top is within reach.
C. The best climber is the one having fun.
D. You can not achieve high unless you change.
6. What does the underlined word“it”in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Time. B. Transformation. C. The world. D. My view.
7. Why does the author like rock climbing?
A. It challenges her to compete with men.
B. It allows her a unique attitude toward rock.
C. It teaches her how to possess a new language.
D. It makes her feel connected with the earth.

To Swedes, the scent of surströmming (鲱鱼罐头) is pleasant, but to most others, it’s sickening. This contrast highlights the role of culture in shaping our perceptions (见解) of scent. However, researchers now suggest that biology might play a more significant role than previously thought.
Artin Arshamian, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and Asifa Majid, a psychologist at the University of Oxford, noticed from their own previous work that people from different cultures described smells differently. They also knew from past experiments by other researchers that culture was important in determining which sorts of faces people found beautiful. Thus, they expected to see a similar phenomenon with smells.
The researchers conducted a study involving nine diverse groups of people, including hunter-gatherers in Mexico, farmers in Ecuador, and residents of cities like Mexico City and Bangkok. They were presented with ten smells, ranging from isovaleric acid to vanilla extract, and asked to rate them according to pleasantness. The results showed high consistency across cultures, with isovaleric acid universally disliked and vanilla extract mostly enjoyed.
Interestingly, the chemical composition of the smells accounted for 41% of the reactions, while cultural factors only explained 6%. It is quite different in the case of visual perception of faces, where a person’s culture makes up 50% of the explanation for which faces they find beautiful. Meanwhile, the researchers identified an “eye of the beholder” effect in our perceptions of scent. This phenomenon, though less obvious than in visual perception, represents the personal preferences that are shaped by influences outside individual culture, accounting for 54% of the differences in which smells people liked.
This study suggests that our sense of smell may be more influenced by biological factors than cultural ones. It challenges the idea that culture alone determines what we find pleasant or unpleasant and opens up new ways of exploring the biological basis of our senses.
8. What is the initial purpose of the research?
A. To explore how culture affects our sense of smell.
B. To prove all people enjoy the scent of surströmming.
C. To examine geography plays a role in scent perception.
D. To confirm biology has an influence on scent perception.
9. How did the researchers conduct the research?
A. By making questionnaire surveys. B. By recording participants’ reactions.
C. By comparing cultural backgrounds. D. By referring to previous study reports.
10. The underlined “eye of the beholder” effect mentioned in the research refers to ________.
A. the standard of beauty across different cultures
B. the role of culture in shaping our sense of smell
C. the impact of personal preferences on scent perception
D. the influence of outside factors on our visual preference
11. What can be inferred from the participants’ reactions to isovaleric acid?
A. They were familiar with isovaleric acid beforehand.
B. They hated isovaleric acid all due to its unpleasant smell.
C. Their reactions to the scent of isovaleric acid varied among cultures.
D. Their dislike for isovaleric acid was based more on biological factors.
D
Some civilizations record their pasts with art or books. Others pass on history through folk songs and dances. In Singapore, the story of how a ramshackle fishing village in Southeast Asia developed into a wealthy and modern country often comes in spoonfuls of peppery pork rib soup or bites of fried egg noodles at its hawker centers (小贩中心).
For visitors, hawker centers might just seem like food courts: Follow your nose or the longest line, then pay a few Singapore dollars for a plate of food to enjoy at a shared table. For Singaporeans, hawker culture is about more than just a good meal. These food centers are symbols of the country’s diversified culture. Hawker centers are so central to Singapore that the country recently led a successful campaign to have the practice listed as the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
To accommodate (容纳) Singapore’s diversified population, the government made sure the hawker centers included Malay, Indian, and Chinese store owners. “Hawker centers are likely the first places where people will try another ethnic group’s food,” says Chee Kien Lai, author of Early Hawkers in Singa pore. “They’re open to everyone. You can get Chinese food or try Indian cuisine and get connected to different cultures and religions.”
After Singapore’s rapid development in the 1970s and 80s, there was a sudden stop in the construction of hawker centers. Everybody was concentrating on becoming a knowledge-based society. By the time the government returned to building new hawker centers in 2011, many people wondered if there were enough people to carry on the tradition.
“Even though locals love eating at hawker centers, few are interested in running a small food shop themselves,” says Chee. “The cost of labor has gone up, with the younger, better-educated generation put off by the long hours and physical work the job requires. As aging hawkers retire, their recipes risk extinction.”
That’s one of the reasons that, in 2019, Singapore’s National Heritage Board put the hawkers forward for UNESCO recognition. “We need to make them our local cultural heroes,” says Tay.
12. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “ramshackle” in paragraph l?
A. Poor. B. Big. C. Unfriendly. D. Pretty.
13. For Singaporeans, the hawker centers are__________.
A. a means of passing on their history B. an easy way to earn a living
C. symbols of being a modern country D. just good places for cheap food
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. Singapore has a very diversified population.
B. Hawker centers declined shortly after the 1980s.
C There is intense competition among the hawkers.
D Young people enjoy working at the hawker centers.
15. What is Chee Kien Lai worried about?
A. The rising prices of food. B. The high cost of labor in Singapore.
C. The disappearance of hawker centers. D. A lack of customers for hawker centers.

The birth of the little girl, Melody, cast a shadow over her family. The words the doctor said to Dana and Jeff completely shook them, “Your daughter was born with a cleft lip (唇裂).” It was impossible for the couple to hide their sadness. They couldn’t believe it was true until they saw their daughter in person. Seeing her cleft made Dana and Jeff heartbroken more than anything. It broke their heart to imagine the kind of life Melody would lead in the future.
Fortunately, Dana and Jeff saw a ray of hope when the doctor told the couple that their daughter’s condition was treatable with a cleft lip surgery (外科手术). Rather than feeling stressful like the first few days, they promised themselves they never wanted their daughter to suffer from that. They would spare no effort to support Melody.
Nothing is precious than their little angel, and Dana as well as Jeff was ready to do anything for Melody. After bringing Melody home, they immediately began looking for clef surgery options. However, no matter where they turned, getting Melody the surgery she needed was expensive, and the various treatments and medications she needed in the following would also be much more costly than the young family could afford.
Then came the thrilling moment when Jeff browsed through a medical forum one evening he stumbled upon (意外发现) a post about a nonprofit organization that specialized in cleft lip surgeries for children. The organization, named Smileatfuture, is dedicated to providing free surgeries to families who could not ford the procedure. The couple had seen a lot of photos and read a lot of stories about children who had cleft surgeries sponsored by Smileatfuture, and the results were incredible. The idea that Melody could grow up with hardly a scar (伤疤) where her cleft was lit a fire under the couple. Without any hesitation, Dana and her husband reached out to Smileatfuture and handed in an application for medical aid.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11.

C. There is intense competition among the hawkers.
D. Young people enjoy working at the hawker centers.
15. What is Chee Kien Lai worried about?
A. The rising prices of food. B. The high cost of labor in Singapore.
C. The disappearance of hawker centers. D. A lack of customers for hawker centers.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. B 15. C

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“As aging hawkers retire, their recipes risk extinction. (随着上了年纪的小贩退休,他们的食谱面临着灭绝的危险。)”可知,Chee Kien Lai担心小贩中心会消亡。故选C。

【答案】A possible version:
Good morning, everyone. I feel highly honored to stand here and address a speech themed “Positive Attitude”.
Personally, our attitudes towards life determine how happy we are. We can’t always change what happens to us, but we can change the way we look at things. If we have a positive attitude, we can overcome the difficulty and get ready for greater challenges. What should we do to develop a positive attitude? First of all, focus on the bright side of things instead of complaining about the negative side. Besides, it’s important to always be grateful. No matter how difficult our situation seems, there is always something to be grateful for. Last but not least, making friends with positive people, listening to positive music, and reading positive books are all good ways to develop a positive attitude. Only with a positive attitude can we live a happy life.
That’s all! Thank you for listening.

Then they made an instant appointment with Smileatfuture. The moment the couple walked into Smileatfuture, they were greeted with warm smiles and a sense of community. Smileatfuture’s team was incredibly supportive, guiding them on everything they needed to do to prepare Melody for her surgery. Knowing that their daughter’s future was in capable hands, they left with a newfound sense of optimism that day.
The big day for Melody’s surgery finally came. All the tests beforehand showed that Melody was in perfect condition for the surgery. The couple’s hearts were overflowing with a mix of anxiety and hope. After what seemed a century’s waiting, they finally had good news that the surgery was a success. Imagining that their girl was on track for a life of joy, loving to run around and play with other kids in the future, Dana and Jeff felt more than relieved and grateful. The couple owed all these to the kindness they received. They also made a promise to pay it forward by helping others in need.
