Bogre met Frederico in New York City. In 2014, they started a project to make the first public records of every language in the world. They’ve already recorded more than 350 languages.
“When humans lose a language, we also lose the greater diversity (多样化) in art and traditions,” said Bogre. Between 1950 and 2010, 230 languages disappeared. Today, a third of the world’s languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers left. Every two weeks a language dies with its last speaker, and 50% to 90% of them are said to disappear by the next century.
Volunteers has been asked to film native speakers talking in their mother languages. Native speakers are asked to share their stories. One volunteer recorded a language that had never been studied by language researchers before. Another volunteer found a speaker of Ainu, a language in Japan that has nothing to do with any other known language.
A lack (缺乏) of protection is the reason for cutting down the language diversity. For much of the 20th century, governments across the world made some local people use official languages. More than 100 languages in Australia have disappeared since Europeans arrived. However, most languages die today because of other things; climate change and urbanization (城市化) greatly result in the disappearance of languages.

A. Test people’s language levels. B. Offer language courses to people.
C. Find out the reasons for language loss. D. Record all the languages in the world.
44. What does the writer point out in Paragraph 2?
A. Language loss is becoming very serious.
B. Few people are worried about language loss.
C Language loss makes it difficult for people to communicate.
D. Some countries fail to slow down the process of language loss.
45. How do volunteers help protect languages?
A. By writing down native speakers’ stories.
B. By learning languages from native speakers.
C. By improving the living conditions of native speakers.
D. By videoing native speakers talking in their languages.
46. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Where language loss spreads. B. What causes language loss.
C. How to deal with language loss. D. What language loss brings to people.
D
People may experience culture shock when they’re suddenly in a new culture.
Culture shock usually happens in four stages (阶段). During the first stage, a person will feel excited. The excitement usually disappears after a while.
In the next stage, a person might have difficulties with the local language or feel frustrated because he or she can’t communicate with others in his or her mother language.
The good news is that this stage will slowly pass into the third stage —adjustment (调整).
If you decide to make the best of your situation, you will adjust. And finally, you will enter the last stage of culture shock. Once a person is able to accept the new culture and environment, the excitement often returns.
How should we deal with culture shock?
·Keep an open mind. As you learn about the country which you’re going to, it is necessary.
·You should also make an effort to learn the local language.
·Make sure you get to know people in your new environment.
·Finally, have a sense of humor. This is very important! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you make a cultural gaffe (失礼). Laugh at yourself and others will laugh with you.
47. Eric feels excited. Which stage may he be in now?
A. The first stage and the second stage. B. The first stage and the last stage.
C. The third stage and the last stage. D. The second stage and the fourth stage.
48. What should you do when you do something silly in a foreign country?
A. Ask a friend for help. B. Take it easy and laugh at yourself.
C. Show others that you’re right. D. Avoid talking with the people around you.
49. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Where people will experience culture shock. B. What causes culture shock.
C. Tips for people who go travelling. D. Culture shock in a foreign country.

A new machine can help with fighting against global warming. The machine is called Orca. It started working in Iceland. Its name comes from an Icelandic word. CO₂ is one of the main causes of global warming. Orca can get it out of the air and send it deep into the ground, where it is turned into stone.
Invented by a Swiss company the machine is made up of four parts which look like large air conditioners. Each part has 12 large fans that get air from outside into their steel “bodies”. Inside, CO₂ is heated to a high temperature so that it can be collected. Next, CO2 is mixed with water and put deep in the ground. And then it is turned into a type of rock called basalt.
Orca can remove 4,000 tons of CO2 from the air each year. That’s about the same amount as the emissions (排放物) produced by 850 cars in a year.
To make a big difference to global warming, much larger machines like Orca are needed. Some people disagree with that. In their opinion, governments should spend more time and money cutting down greenhouse gas emissions. But others say governments need to do both: reduce new emissions and remove CO₂ in the air.
50. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How Orca was invented. B. What Orca looks like.
C. When Orca was invented. D. How Orca works.
51. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Spending money fighting against global warming. B. Cutting down greenhouse gas emissions.
C. Building more machines like Orca. D. Making a difference to air pollution.
52. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A special air conditioner. B. A new machine—Orca.
C. A new type of rock—basalt. D. A Swiss company —Climeworks.

Judging by her good speech and bright smile, strangers may not be able to tell that 28-year-old Zhao Youzhu, who is outgoing and loves listening to music, is almost deaf.
When she was a little child her parents didn’t worry about her slow response (反应) to sounds, thinking that their daughter might just be developing more slowly than other children.

45. How do volunteers help protect languages?

A new machine can help with fighting against global warming. The machine is called Orca. It started working in Iceland. Its name comes from an Icelandic word. CO₂ is one of the main causes of global warming. Orca can get it out of the air and send it deep into the ground, where it is turned into stone.
Invented by a Swiss company, the machine is made up of four parts which look like large air conditioners.

After Zhao started school, she often seemed to be different and preferred to play alone. After she was examined at a number of different hospitals, the doctors in Beijing said the young girl had hearing problems.
“We gave her a hearing aid, but when she wore it, sudden noises made her afraid, and she would cry,” her mother said.
Her mother helped her practice English every day, and she started primary school at the age of 5. Over time, Zhao worked out a way to get the most out of her lessons.
She would sit in the front row, closely watching the teacher’s mouth as he or she spoke. She quickly got used to school life and became the top student.
In 2010, she was accepted by Northeast Agricultural University in Harbin. She reminds (使……想起) me of a sentence: _______________________
