高三英语培优外刊阅读 班级:____________学号:____________姓名:____________ 外刊精选|中国人太爱吃榴莲,催生一批东南亚“榴莲富豪”? China's Lust for Durian Is Creating Fortunes in Southeast Asia By Thomas Fuller The fruit, durian, has long been a cherished part of local cultures in Southeast Asia, where it is grown in abundance. A single durian is typically the size of a rugby ball and can emit an odor so powerful that it is banned from most hotels. Then, China acquired a taste for durian in a very big way. Last year, the value of durian exports from Southeast Asia to China was $6.7 billion, a twelvefold increase from $550 million in 2017. China buys virtually all of the world’s exported durians, according to United Nations data. The biggest exporting country by far is Thailand; Malaysia and Vietnam are the other top sellers. The Thai durian industry is centered in Chanthaburi Province. During peak harvest season, in May and June, heaping piles of durian are everywhere. Around 1,000 shipping containers of durian leave packing houses throughout Chanthaburi every day, creating durian traffic jams that rival manic Bangkok intersections. Across Chanthaburi, the signs of durian wealth are everywhere: modern houses and new hospitals. A shopping mall, inaugurated two years ago, hosted a car show in April. "When you're from another province and you arrive here, you come to realize that durian farmers are very, very rich," said Abhisit Meechai, a car dealer who was selling MG vehicles. "Never judge a book by its cover," Mr. Abhisit said of his customers who are durian farmers. "They come with dirty clothes and dirty hands. But they pay for their cars with cash." 1.lust英 [lʌst] 美 [lʌst]n. ________________________________________ 2.durian英 [ˈdʒʊəriən] 美 [ˈdʊriən]n. ________________________________________ 3.fortune英 [ˈfɔːtʃuːn] 美 [ˈfɔːrtʃuːn]n.________________________________________ 4.cherished英 [ˈtʃerɪʃt] 美 [ˈtʃerɪʃt]adj. ________________________________________ 5.cherish v.________________________________________ 6.typically英 [ˈtɪpɪkli] 美 [ˈtɪpɪkli]adv. ________________________________________ 7.emit英 [iˈmɪt] 美 [iˈmɪt]v. ________________________________________ 8.odor英 [ˈəʊdə] 美 [ˈoʊdər]n. ________________________________________ 9.acquire v. ________________________________________ 10.value英 [ˈvæljuː] 美 [ˈvæljuː]n. ________________________________________ 11.export英 [ɪkˈspɔːt] 美 [ˈekspɔːrt]n. ________________________________________ 12.import n. ________________________________________ 13.twelvefold英 [ˈtwelvfəʊld] 美 [ˈtwelvfoʊld]adj. ______________________ 14.virtually英 [ˈvɜːtʃuəli] 美 [ˈvɜrːtʃuəli]adv. ________________________________________ 15.peak英 [piːk] 美 [piːk]adj. ________________________________________ 16.heaping英 [ˈhiːpɪŋ] 美 [ˈhiːpɪŋ]adj. ________________________________________ 17.heap v. ________________________________________ 18.ship v. ________________________________________ 19.rival英 [ˈraɪvl] 美 [ˈraɪvl]v. ________________________________________ 20.manic英 [ˈmænɪk] 美 [ˈmænɪk]adj. ________________________________________ 21.intersection英 [ˌɪntəˈsekʃn] 美 [ˌɪntərˈsekʃn]n. ________________ 22.inaugurate英 [ɪˈnɔːɡjəreɪt] 美 [ɪˈnɑːɡjəreɪt]v. ____________________ 23.inauguration n. ________________________________________ 【词块学习】 请从文章中找到下面中文相对应的文词块。 1.his lust for power ___________________ 2.make a fortune ___________________ 3.spend a fortune ___________________ 4.cherish the memory of something ___________________ 5.grow in abundance ___________________ 6.abundance n. ___________________ 7.in abundance(习语)___________________ 8.emit a clicking sound ___________________ 9.a foul odour ___________________ 10.a pungent odour ___________________ 11.acquire a taste for something ___________________ 12.in a very big way ___________________ 13.increase in value ___________________ 14.fall in value ___________________ 15.piles of ___________________ 16.shipping container ___________________ 17.come to realize ___________________ 18.say of ___________________ 拓展练习阅读理解 Globalization has reshaped the world in profound ways, joining nations closely together through trade, communication, and cultural exchange. While many celebrate the economic opportunities it brings, globalization also poses significant challenges to local cultures, which can be overshadowed by a homogenizing global culture. This raises a complex debate: Does globalization enrich local cultures or endanger them? On one hand, globalization allows for an unprecedented exchange of ideas, customs, and values. It exposes individuals to diverse cultures, promoting understanding and tolerance among different societies. For example, international festivals and food fairs introduce people to foreign cuisines and traditions, enriching their cultural experience and broadening their worldviews. However, the other side of this cultural exchange is often a dilution of distinct local identities. As global brands dominate markets worldwide, local businesses and traditions can struggle to survive. The widespread existence of fast food chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks in cities around the world is a proof to this trend. This not only leads to the disappearance of unique cultural landmarks but also to a more homogenized global culture where local features may struggle to find a place. Furthermore, the pressure to adapt to global market demands often reshapes local cultures in ways that prioritize profitability over genuineness. Traditional crafts and practices are commercialized and removed of their original meaning to appeal to mass markets. This can lead to a shallow understanding of cultural symbols, which are disassociated from their rich historical contexts. Despite these challenges, globalization is not necessarily a disaster for local cultures. Many communities have turned globalization to their advantage by promoting cultural tourism and exporting local products that represent their unique traditions and histories. This not only helps preserve cultural identities but also supports local economies. In conclusion, globalization presents both opportunities and threats to local cultures. It enriches cultural understanding on a global scale while also risking the erosion of unique cultural identities. The challenge lies in finding a balance that respects and preserves local traditions while engaging with the global community. 13.How does globalization contribute positively to cultural understanding? A.By removing all cultural differences. B.By increasing the profitability of local businesses. C.By enforcing a uniform educational system worldwide. D.By introducing people to various cultures and promoting tolerance. 14.Which statement best describes a challenge posed by globalization to local cultures? A.Globalization promotes understanding and tolerance. B.Globalization has no significant impact on local cultures. C.Globalization leads to the loss of unique cultural landmarks. D.Globalization primarily supports local economies through cultural tourism. 15.What does the underlined word “dilution” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Recognition. B.Strengthener. C.Mission. D.Reduction. 16.What is the best title for the text? A.Globalization: A Double-Edged Sword for Local Cultures B.The Benefits of Globalization for Cultural Exchange C.Preserving Local Cultures in a Globalized World D.The Threats of Globalization to Local Identities 1.lust英 [lʌst] 美 [lʌst]n. While many celebrate the economic opportunities it brings, globalization also poses significant challenges to local cultures, which can be overshadowed by a homogenizing global culture. This raises a complex debate: Does globalization enrich local cultures or endanger them?(全球化以深刻的方式重塑了世界,通过贸易、通信和文化交流将各国紧密地联系在一起。 Globalization: A Double-Edged Sword for Local Cultures(全球化:地方文化的双刃剑)最适合作文章标题。故选A。
