The underwater bicycle parking garage
At Amsterdam's Central Station,a sizable underground bicycle parking garage recently opened. The building features 6,300 spaces for individual bicycles and 700 additional spaces for shared bikes.
Statistics constantly show that 35% of Amsterdam people and 50% of Utrecht inhabitants use bicycles daily. Before constructing the garage floor and setting the massive columns that had been carried in by ship to support the roof that would eventually be flooded, workers had to first drain the water from the 19th-century station.
Around half of the 200,000 daily visitors to Amsterdam's Central Station arrive by bicycle. The other half arrive by train, ferry, tram, bus, and subway. They used to park in many of the disorganized above-ground bike racks (架子) that were located around the station and were taken out now.Locals viewed these as annoying racks that frequently had no open spaces due to a high number of abandoned bicycles, despite the fact that the largest number of these is so enormous that they have become a tourist attraction. As a result, regular commuters ran the risk of having their bikes impounded by locking them to nearby trees, street lamps, and signposts or by placing them on any free slab (板子)of concrete, which raised the likelihood that they would be stolen.
The brand-new underwater parking structure is spotless,at least for the time being.Several dozen OV-Fiets shared bikes and possibly a few hundred personal bicycles are available for rental inside the facility, which is staffed around the clock. The facility also has a daily cleaning crew hard at work and a few friendly staff members prepared to explain how everything operates.
The first 24 hours of parking at the garage are free;after that,it costs$1.46 each day. That makes it handy for folks who commute every day and serves as a powerful way for people to swiftly remove their bicycles.
The above-ground entrance of the underwater garage can be seen clearly through a sizable blue sign and a bicycle logo, making it obvious from a considerable distance.

The Earth's most ancient land animal
Jonathan,a tortoise,is regarded as the oldest living land animal in the world, first arriving at its current home on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic in 1882 as a gift to the governor of the island, which is a British territory. He was thought to be at the age of at least 50 at the time because his species,a Seychelles giant tortoise, reaches full maturity by this age and 120cm-long Jonathan has not grown any bigger since his arrival on the island.
His age means Jonathan was just a youngster when Queen Victoria,Britain's secondlongest reigning monarch(执政君主),took the throne, and he outlived both World Wars.
Despite his long life,Jonathan only gained international attention in 2008 when the newspaperThe Independentreported on his then-remarkable age of 176.At that stage,he had already surpassed the 150 years'life expectancy of Seychelles giant tortoises.
Jonathan, who is now blind with cataracts (白内障) and lacks a sense of smell,is recognised by the Guinness World Records as the oldest known living land animal.
He has lived most of his life at the governor's plantation house, according to the island's website, which added that the tortoise could also be considered a national symbol for the island.Jonathan's image is even on the back side of a Saint Helena five pence coin.
Scientists have even studied Jonathan to determine what health benefits they might gather from his diet and his cells.Because his cells do not change in the same way that humans'cells do,scientists hope he could reveal the secret to fighting cancer in humans.
Jonathan shares his home with three other tortoises: Emma,a 54-year-old female,David,a 54-year-old male and Frederika,a 31-year-old tortoise originally called Frederik that is now thought to be female. The first two arrived in 1969,and Frederika arrived in 1991.

For the past year,Adalyn had bravely fought her brain tumor. She spent six weeks in the hospital getting 30 rounds of radiation nearly every day.Even as she lost some of her hair, she insisted on wearing her“Princess Elsa”braids(辫子),modeled by her favorite character inFrozen. Her love of Disney princesses never ended, even as she fought for her life.
Her treatment options were done, and the family didn't know what the future held,so they decided to celebrate Adalyn's 4th birthday a few months early. They called upon their community to help, and they couldn't believe the outpouring of support they received.

Before long,Tanya and her army of volunteers had put together a surprise fit for a princess! People quickly signed up to dress up as characters fromFrozenand other Disney films, and the team arranged a kid-friendly menu selected by Adalyn.
“I put requests on social media and it was amazing how people wanted to help,”Tanya recalled.Adalyn was a little nervous at first, but as soon as she saw Olaf, she rushed to give him“a warm hug”.The party was held at a friend of the family's home.Someone donated a yellow princess dress for the birthday girl, and princess-themed balloons decorated the halls.Over 40 people attended the party, and guests feasted on meatballs, hot dogs, cheese and so on.
