Chinese scientists have released (公开) a new geologic map of the moon. They say it is the world’s most detailed map of the moon’s surface to date. The mapping project took more than a hundred researchers 10 years to complete.
The mapping work used data (数据) from the Chang’e missions as the main source. It also used high-quality data from international exploration programs. China started the Change’e program in 2004. Since then, the country has sent various landers and rovers (探测器) to the moon in order to collect data.
The new map was drawn on a scale (比例尺) of 1:2,500,000. On this map, we can see 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 different rock types and 14 unique types of structures. The map also shows the locations of the landing sites (着陆地点) of the Chang’e missions.
The most detailed map provides a lot of information about the geology of the moon and its evolution (进化). It is expected to make a great contribution to scientific research. It can also help choose the landing sites on the moon for future exploration missions.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has made a number of regional maps of the moon with data from the Apollo missions. However, those maps were completed at different times with different levels of quality. So they were not able to be directly used together. (The Apollo program succeeded in preparing and landing the first humans on the moon between the years of 1961 and 1972.)
The USGS did put its regional maps together to complete a 1:5 million-scale map in 2020, said researchers. That map, however, is less detailed in comparison to China’s 1:2.5 million-scale map.

C. the Chang’e missions D. international exploration programs

A. Because it was drawn on a scale of 1:2.5 million.
B. Because it only collected data from the Apollo program in 1972.
C. Because it is made up with regional maps with different levels of quality.
D. Because it is expected to provide more information for scientific research.

Nowadays, most people seldom write by hand. However, some studies showed that writing by hand had many advantages.
A survey showed writing by hand was better for learning and memory than using a keyboard. “When you write your shopping list or English notes by hand, you can remember these better and more quickly,” said Audrey, a researcher of the survey.
The result showed that brains of young adults were much more active when they wrote by hand than when they used a keyboard. According to Audrey, lots of senses were activated (激活) when writing something by hand. These senses built the relation of different parts of the brain, which was helpful for learning.
Audrey did a second survey with her teammates and they invited 12 young adults and 12 children to take part in it. The survey was different from what Audrey had done before because this was the first time that children had taken part in such a survey.
The result also showed the importance to children in learning to draw or write by hand at early ages. “Learning to write by hand is a slow process, but it’s important for children,” Audrey said. “When children write something by hand, the hand movements can form the shapes of words and put these children in a condition of learning. It also helps them form good learning habits.”
Therefore, people had better write things by hand as often as possible.
47. How many people were invited to take part in Audrey’s second survey?
A. 24 young adults. B. 12 young adults and 12 children.
C. 24 children. D. 12 old adults and 12 children.

C. To encourage people to write by hand.
D. To introduce how students practice writing by hand.
49. What’s the best title of this passage?

C. How to improve memory D. Get to know more about students

Hou Yifan born on February 27, 1994 in Jiangsu, China, is a world-famous Chinese chess player. She was the Women’s World Chess champion (冠军), the youngest ever to win the title (头衔).
Hou started playing chess when she was 5 years old in 1999. At that time, her parents took Hou to try different brain games at a training center. “It was so interesting that I was attracted (吸引) by the chess and decided to take up the hobby,” said Hou. “Chess is a brain game full of uncertainties(不确定性). Even when there are only five or six pieces left on the board, you cannot predict all the results,” said Hou. “So instead of focusing too much on theories, we should depend on practice and skills more.” Learning methods from the past matches and practicing chess became her daily activities.

Although she became a famous chess star known all over the world, Hou wasn’t proud of it. “I’m happy to win these titles, but I know this is a coin with two sides,” Hou added. “As I gain public attention, my faults will become larger. So I should keep improving.”
Having focused on international chess for a long time Hou then decided to study in college. In 2012, she studied International Relations at Peking University and then she went to the University of Oxford in 2018. In 2020, she became a teacher at Shenzhen University. She wanted to connect the methods she learned in China and the West and teach more young Chinese people.

Words! Words! Words! So many words! We use them to express feelings and ideas. But where do those words come from? And how do they end up in a dictionary? The answer is through wide reading of published materials by dictionary researchers.
The editors (编辑) of Merriam-Webster Dictionary spend an hour or two reading every day. What do they read? They read online articles, books, magazines and newspapers. They pay special attention to new words, new usages and differences in spellings. They also find out which words are being used the most. And they pay attention to the way they are being used.
The Oxford English Dictionary’s (OED’s) Reading Program uses paid and volunteer readers to help. If these people have new findings in their reading, they provide examples and explain their usages. The history of a word’s usage and current (当前的) usage are also pointed out.
Millions of historical and current words are kept in the databases (数据库) of these and other dictionaries. Many recently added words may come from electronic files (文件), pop culture and politics. The OED has added many new English words from Republic of Korea recently. Korea, first spelled Corea, has been used as the country’s name since the 17th century. In 1999, “K-pop” appeared in Billboard Magazine and was added to the OED in 2016.
From Merriam-Webster we have 455 recently added words including “dad bod”—a typical middle-aged dad’s body shape. “Digital nomad” was also added, meaning someone who does his job over the Internet from anywhere.
There are so many words in the world. With the great effort of the dictionary researchers, there will be more on the way!
53. What can we know about OED’s Reading Program?
A. It provides the changes of Chinese. B. It creates the history of words.
C. It uses paid and volunteer readers to help. D. It encourages readers to do more reading.
54. Who can be called a “digital nomad”?
A. A well-paid person. B. A digital expert.
C. A person who finds words for dictionaries. D. A person working online from anywhere.
55. What is the purpose of writing the text?
A. To show how words get into dictionaries.
B To explain where editors find new words.
C. To show what new words mean to dictionaries.
D. To explain why new words are needed in dictionaries.

44. The main source of the data for the new map is from________.
A. the Apollo missions B. future exploration programs
C. the Chang’e missions D. international exploration programs
45. How long has the Chinese researchers collected data of the moon’s surface?
A. Since 1968. B. Since 2004. C. Since 2020. D. Since 1972.
46. Why is the map from the USGS less detailed?

48. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us how to improve our writing.
B. To explain why people seldom write by hand.
C. To encourage people to write by hand.
D. To introduce how students practice writing by hand.
49. What’s the best title of this passage?

Hou Yifan, born on February 27, 1994 in Jiangsu, China, is a world-famous Chinese chess player.
It needed a lot of hard work, but it was worth it. She became the youngest chess champion in the world at the age of 16. Although she became a famous chess star known all over the world, Hou wasn’t proud of it. “I’m happy to win these titles, but I know this is a coin with two sides,” Hou added. “As I gain public attention, my faults will become larger. So I should keep improving.”
Having focused on international chess for a long time, Hou then decided to study in college. In 2012, she studied International Relations at Peking University and then she went to the University of Oxford in 2018. In 2020, she became a teacher at Shenzhen University. She wanted to connect the methods she learned in China and the West and teach more young Chinese people.
50. Why did Hou Yifan decide to learn chess?
A. Because her parents were good at playing chess.
B. Because she thought it was interesting.
C. Because she had a good chess teacher.
D. Because she had no other choice.
51. What do we know about Hou Yifan?

Words! Words!

There is no doubt that happiness is one of the most precious things in the world. One of the happiest moments in my life was when I won the first prize in a painting competition. I had spent countless hours practicing and perfecting my skills. The reason this made me so happy was not just the prize itself, but the recognition of my hard work and dedication.
