There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs rand farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was chief dog; he was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter. But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miler’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck. Buck growled and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train. When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go. That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood. “How much are they paying you for this?” he asked. “I only get fifty dollars.” “And the man who stole him — how much did he get?” asked the barman. “A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.” “That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here, help me to get him into this.” They took off Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men? And where was Mr. Miller? (from The Call of the Wild) 1 Which is the correct order of what happened to Buck? ①The man tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck. ②Buck was pushed into a wooden box and spent the night. ③Buck hit the man’s hand and was pulled hard again to give up. ④Buck and Manuel left the garden and arrived at a railway station. Abing was born in 1893 in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi. His mother died very early. His father trained him in drums from the age of 10. Abing began learning the dizi at the age of 12, then the erhu. He learned to play many of the local instruments quite well. At the age of 17, Abing first performed in public, which made him well known for his musical talent. When Abing was 35 years old, he got an eye disease and completely lost the sight of both eyes. From then on, he was known as Blind Abing. He often told people, “I haven’t used the name Hua Yanjun for ages, no one knows it. It’s better if you call me Blind Abing; that’s the name that everyone on the street knows.” Abing became homeless, and he had to make a living as a street performer. After Abing got married in 1903, he continued to perform every afternoon in a public square in Wuxi. His most famous piece, Erquan Yingyue, was performed in this period. When listening to the moving piece of music, you can sense a strong sadness and pain behind the beauty. During his lifetime, Abing developed his erhu skills to such a high level that his music spread throughout the country. However, it is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear. Abing died in 1950. His Erquan Yingyue is still played as a standard erhu piece today. As one of China’s national treasures, it is a piece which all the great erhu masters praise. The sad beauty makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own painful experiences. 1.Where was Abing born? 2.What is Abing’s real name? 3.What kind of music does Erquan Yingyue belong to? 4.Besides beauty, what other feeling can Erquan Yingyue bring us? 5.Were all Abing’s music recorded for future world?
