A I am Peter Brown.I am a writer with an important magazine. The other day I saw a whitehaired man sitting on the chair in front of his house.I could see the wrinkles (皱纹) in his face and neck, and his wrinkled hands.Articles on the secrets of living to an old age are always popular with our readers,so I decided to write a story and discover the secret of this man's long life.As I went near him,I said: “Sir,would it bother you if I talked with you for just a moment?” “Not at all.Actually,it would make me very happy.I get very bored sitting here, even for a short time.Until a little while ago,I lived a full and active life without a moment's rest.” “Well, they say that a lot of activities help one to live a long time.” “That's true, very true.I still feel very well, although my step has slowed down a little.” The conversation continued in that way for a while.Although I tried to be very thoughtful about getting information from older people,it seemed to me that it would now be all right to begin to ask some polite questions. “Would it bother you if I smoked?” “Not at all.” “I'd offer you one,but I suppose you probably don't smoke,or drink,or...” “You're wrong! I've always smoked a great deal. And until a little while ago,I went dancing every night. And as for alcoholic drinks...” “Do you mean to say that you've done these things all your life?” “Of course, why does that surprise you so much?” “I've always been told that doing those things is bad for the health.” “Nonsense !” “I suppose that you have another secret...a lot of fruit...vegetables...a lot of exercise in the fresh air...” “Don't be silly! I hate exercise in the fresh air,and I don't like any kind of vegetable.” “This is unbelievable!” “What do you mean, unbelievable? What are you talking about?” “It's just that I can't understand how you've been able to live like that and to have lasted so long.Tell me,how old are you?” “Me? I'm twentyeight. Why?” 1.Why did Peter Brown decide to write a story about the man? A.Because the man looked healthy. B.Because he thought the man looked cool. A.I don't like them. B.I drink a little. C.They're my favorite. D.They cost too much. 3.According to the story, the man________. A.smokes a lot B.often eats vegetables C.likes doing sports D.stays at home every night 4.What can we learn from the story? A.All's well that ends well. B.It's never too late to learn. C.What you see is what you get. D.Don't judge a book by its cover. 根据第一段的“Articles on the secrets of living to an old age are always popular with our readers,so I decided to write a story and discover the secret of this man's long life.” 根据第十段的“I've always smoked a great deal. And until a little while ago,I went dancing every night.” 根据第十段的“I've always smoked a great deal.” B A new study has discovered that meditation (冥想) and oxygen sport together reduce depression (抑郁).The Rutgers University study found that this mind and body combination, done twice a week for only two months, reduced the symptoms for a group of students by 40 percent. “We are excited by the findings because we saw such a meaningful improvement in both clinically depressed and nondepressed students,” said lead author Dr.Brandon Alderman.“It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression.” Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive effect on combating depression.Alderman and Dr.Tracey Shors discovered that a combination of mental and physical training (MAP) enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them. Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport. They were told that if their thoughts drifted to the past or the future they should refocus on their breathing, enabling those with depression to accept momenttomoment changes in attention. Shors, who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus-part of the brain involved in memory and learning-says scientists have shown in animal models that oxygen sport exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive. The idea for the human intervention (干预) came from her laboratory studies, she says, with the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can learn to recover from stressful life events. By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people who are fighting depression can acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelming recollection of memories from the past,Shors says. “We know these treatments can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be effective in improving mental health.”said Alderman.“The good news is that this intervention can be practiced by anyone at any time and at no cost.” 5.What made the research so different? A.Adopting a way of meaningful talk. B.Combining the two behavioral ways to treat depression. C.Treating depression with special medicine. D.Comparing the depressed with the nondepressed. 6.The underlined word “combating” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ________. A.fighting B.identifying C.distinguishing D.examining 7.What did the participants do in the research? A.They did oxygen sport half an hour before thinking. B.They thought quietly and then took exercise. C.They took exercise longer than they thought. D.They took exercise while thinking quietly. 8.What is Shors' main purpose of her studies? A.To find out certain brain cells of humans. B.To study the production of new brain cells. C.To offer people a new method to treat stress. D.To decide the links between stress and exercise. 根据第二段的“It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression.” 根据第一段的“A new study has discovered that meditation (冥想) and oxygen sport together reduce depression(抑郁).” 根据第四段的“Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport.” 根据第六段的“with the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they call learn to recover from stressful life events。” Last year,I received a special present. My children __1__me a stainless steel coffee machine for my birthday.I love drinking coffee every morning and couldn't __2__ to use it.But __3__I poured my first cup,the coffee spilled (洒出) all over the table.Thankfully,no one was around to see my __4__face!
