I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley.Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2to 3weekold owl.It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine.If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck.My next work was to construct a nest in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful.A wire basket was found.I put some pine branches (松树枝) into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable.I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were nowhere to be found.I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults;they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well.I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all!The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings.I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And with it was the greatest sight of all — LUNCH!The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

“Animals in the Arctic, including reindeer and golden eagles, are migrating earlier due to climate change,” say researchers who have gathered a huge amount of data to study the behavior of 86 Arctic species over the past three decades.
“We have the ability to keep our eyes on animal movements on a very large scale,” says Eliezer Gurarie at the University of Maryland.“It seems that animals are unknowingly reacting and adapting to climatic changes, and have been doing for years.”
Gurarie and his team used GPS and satellites to track the spring migration of more than 900 female reindeer over the past 15 years. They discover that the females are migrating to give birth about a day earlier year on year, probably as a result of warming temperatures.“Earlier birthing times can be risky in northern parts of the Arctic,”says team member Gil Bohrer at Ohio State University.“There are higher chances of their children facing strong and unexpected storms,” he says.If they do, many will die because they cannot deal with extreme conditions.
Similarly, golden eagles—which usually nest in the Arctic area—have been starting their spring migration half a day earlier each year over the past 25 years.
“The daytoday change of climate is very small,” says Bohrer.“To understand how animals react to climate change, you need a very long period of observation—something that has only recently been possible.”
The researchers' archive (档案) of Arctic animal movements currently covers more than 15 million data points related to 8,000 animals.“Our archive can help to advise management methods to preserve endangered species, as climate change only becomes more extreme,” says Bohrer.
8.What can we conclude from Gurarie's words?
A.Researchers can guide animal movements.
B.Animals can adapt to climate change easily.
C.Animals don't know how to react to the changes.
D.Earlier migration is animals' reaction to warmer climate.
根据第二段中的“It seems that animals are unknowingly reacting and adapting to climatic changes, and have been doing for years.”
9.What is a possible bad effect of animals' giving birth earlier?
A.Children have less opportunity to survive.
B.There will be more unexpected storms.
C.Fewer children will be delivered.
D.They may migrate earlier in spring.
根据第三段中的“Earlier birthing times can be...cannot deal with extreme conditions”可知,早出生的动物幼崽无法抵御极端的环境状况,存活下来的机会更低。
答案 A
10.What does Bohrer want to stress in paragraph 5?
A.The small change of climate.
B.The challenge of the research.
C.The possibility of observing animals.
D.The purpose of the research.
11.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The observation of animals.
B.Newlyfound animals in danger.
C.The discovery of animals' migrating earlier.
D.Animals' extinction caused by global warming.
根据第一段中的“Animals in the Arctic...earlier due to climate change”并结合全文可知,这篇文章讲述了动物提前迁徙这一发现。

Have you ever wondered what wild animals do when no one is watching?
Lowcost, dependable and small modern cameras offered a big help.Cameras placed in hardtoreach places have shot everything from small desert cats to larger snowlowing cats in the northern Rocky Mountains.Scientists have been able to document the “private” moments of wildlife with leading technology.
Grant Harris is a government biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In his words, “there's no doubt that these wild cameras are important tools to learn new information on wildlife.” Harris said some images help scientists see the effects of climate change.
Researchers with the Wyoming Migration Initiative, or WMI, are among those using wild cameras along with global positioning systems. But WMI director Matthew Kauffman says as those devices are limited, so is the amount of information they can gather. However, cameras can be left in very wild areas for days, weeks or even months. They can provide information on how many animals are moving over a given period of time.
Putting those cameras in place requires careful planning.Wild video can show details about animal behavior. However, wild cameras have their problems too.Animals such as wolverines and bears sometimes attack them.Scientists do not know if the attacks are the result of anger or interest. Also, the devices have become popular tools to help hunters look for animals. Some people argue that it is unfair to use the cameras that way.
Even with such problems, wild cameras are clearly an important scientific tool in researching wild animals.

Scientists have been surprised and impressed with the longdistance travel of a bird recently.A common cuckoo (布谷鸟) flew from southern Africa to Mongolia.
Onon is a common cuckoo. It's one of 5 cuckoos that were tagged in the summer of 2019 in Monglia, far to the north of China. 16 However, scientists weren't sure that cuckoos from Mongolia flew to Africa for the winter.
In June, 2019, scientists attached tiny trackers (跟踪器) to five cuckoos. 17 Sure enough, Onon spent the winter in southern Africa—in Zambia.
18 “It is one of the longest animal migrations that have been recorded for a land bird,” said Chris Hewson, one of the project's lead scientists.
At times, Onon stopped for a few hours or a few days. But some of the long stretches (一段时间), like crossing the Indian Ocean, had to be done without stopping. 19 The birds have to travel through strong winds and storms, make sure they find enough to eat, and avoid being eaten.
Luckily, cuckoos seem to have a good sense of weather patterns, allowing them to fatten up as much as possible right before they leave. They also seem to be good at finding helpful winds that allow them to travel long distances without getting too tired. 20 Onon is the only one of the five tagged cuckoos that made it all the way back to Mongolia.
A.All of them grew well.
B.Still, flying such long distances isn't easy.
C.Long migrations like this are dangerous.
D.Cuckoos originally came from Africa.
E.They broke previous records of animal migrations.
F.Long migrations are common among seabirds, but cuckoos are land birds.
G.These trackers allowed scientists to follow the movements of the birds on a map.
