The social purpose of the copyright system is to encourage creativity and the advancement of knowledge by giving those who make intellectual (智力的) contributions a “unique right to their writings and discoveries” for limited times. Protection is provided for a much longer time for copyrights than for patents. The U.S. Copyright Law of 1976 provides a term or the lifetime of the author plus 50 years. It recognizes that the value of written works often extends over a longer time than that of technological advances in the public area.
It is essential to register for formal copyright protection in order to have some degree of protection against the copyright of one’s works by others. The procedure for obtaining a copyright registration is quite simple—an application is submitted with a small fee and two copies of the work. No examination is made, and the copyright is immediately in force.
The Copyright Office will provide on request a variety of leaflets (小册子) describing the procedure and giving information about the classes of subject matter that can be registered.
Those are subject to protection:
(1) Books and newspapers (2) Lectures
(3) Dramatic compositions (4) Films
(5) Maps (6) Works of ant
(7) Sound recordings (8) Photographs
(9) Prints and labels (10) Musical compositions
Those are not subject to protection:
(1) Ideas (2) Systems, methods and plans
(3) Government publications (4) Laws and opinions of courts
You can contact the Copyright Office (wwcoprightfice.org) for more information.
1. In which aspect do copyrights differ from patents?
A. The application fee. B. The duration of protection.
C. The intellectual value. D. The contribution to society.
2. Which of the following should you provide for copyright registration?
A. Copies of your work. B. Photos of yourself.
C. Introductory leaflets. D. Examination certificates.
3. According to the text, the Copyright Office may reject ______.
A. a movie about a new method of time travel
B. an original musical composition for children
C. a book about one’s opinions on American laws
D. an official document issued by the local county

When Alex Lin was 11, he read an article about electronic waste, or e- waste, and its harmful effects due to toxic substances like mercury and lead (铅). Concerned, he discussed the issue with his classmates from the Westerly Innovations Network (WIN), an organization they formed to solve community problems.
To address the e-waste issue, Alex and his friends began by educating themselves on the chemicals in e- waste and their effects on humans. They then conducted a survey to assess the situation in their town and discovered a significant lack of awareness about e-waste. Disturbed by their findings, including a case of a man dumping old computers in his backyard, they decided to act.
They organized a two-day e-waste collection drive at a school parking lot, collecting over21,000 pounds of e- waste. This included out-of-date computers from the school system. Alex’ team then set up a permanent e-waste drop-off center for the town and found a responsible company to recycle the waste, ensuring it wouldn’t be shipped overseas where it could cause harm.
Understanding that reusing is more efficient than recycling, Alex’s team also focused on refurbishing (翻新) old computers. They persuaded their school to teach students how to refurbish donated computers, and they distributed 260 computers to students in need, making a direct impact on their education and the environment.
To create a lasting solution Alex and his team advocated for e-waste legislation (立法). After initial setbacks, they successfully lobbied for (游说) a bill that banned the dumping of e-waste, making Rhode Island the fourth state to create such legislation. This achievement marked a significant step in promoting safe treatment of e-waste.
Recognizing e-waste as a global issue, Alex and his friends expanded their project internationally, establishing WIN teams in Mexico and three African countries. They shipped refurbished media centers to schools and centers in need, further spreading the message about safe e-waste disposal.
Alex’ work exemplifies how young individuals can lead community efforts to address environmental challenges, promoting awareness, responsible recycling, and the importance of reusing technology to prevent it from becoming toxic trash.
4. What was the primary motivation for Alex Lin to get involved with the issue of e-waste?
A. A discussion on e-waste with his classmates from the WIN.
B. His personal need to recycle his old electronic devices.
C. Reading an alarming article about the harmful effects of e- waste.
D. A case of a man dumping old computers in his backyard.
5. How did Alex and his team address the issue of e- waste in their town?
A. By lobbying for e-waste legislation effortlessly.
B. By organizing a collection drive and setting up a drop-off center.
C. By conducting more surveys to raise awareness of their neighborhood.
D. By persuading the local government to handle the e- waste.
6. Arrange the following events in the order they occurred in the passage:
a. Alex read an article about e-waste. b. They collected e-waste and set up a drop-off center.
c. Alex advocated for a new e-waste bill. d. WIN was formed.
e. They shipped refurbished computers overseas.
A. d-a-b-c-e B. a-b-c-d-e C. a-c-b-d-e D. d-c-a-b-e
7. What personal qualities does Alex Lin display throughout the story?
A. Curiosity and creativity. B. Leadership and problem- solving skills.
C. Foresight and environmental concern. D. Technical expertise and innovation.

The Enjoyment of Travel
Travel used to be a pleasure, but now it has become an industry. No doubt there are greater facilities for traveling today than a hundred years ago, and governments with their official travel bureau s have developed the tourist trade, resulting in modern man traveling much more than his grandfather. Nevertheless, travel seems to have become a lost art. To understand the art of travel, one should first be aware of the different types of false travel.
The first kind of false travel is travel to improve one’s mind, which has been overdone. I always doubt whether one’s mind can be so easily improved. If we are usually so serious as to be bent upon improving our minds, we should at least during a vacation empty the mind. This false idea of travel has given rise to tourist guides, the most intolerable chattering busybodies that I can imagine.
One cannot pass a square or a statue without his attention being called to the fact that So-and-so was born on April 23, 1792, and died on December 2, 1852. I have seen convent (修道院) sisters accompanying school children to a cemetery, reading to them the dates of the dead, the age at which he married, and other such learned nonsense, which I am sure spoiled the pleasure of the entire trip for the children.
The second kind of false travel is travel for conversation, in order that one may talk about it afterward. I have seen visitors at Hupao of Hangzhou, a place famous for its tea and spring water, having their picture taken while lifting tea cups to their lips. The danger is that one spends less thought on the actual taste of the tea than on the photograph itself. This sort of thing can become an obsession, especially with travelers provided with cameras. Tourists are so busy with their cameras that they have no time to look at the places themselves.
This foolish travel produces the third type of false travelers, who travel by schedule, knowing beforehand exactly how many hours they will spend in each city. Bound by the clock and run by the calendar as he is at home, he is still bound by the clock and run by the calendar while abroad.
8. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. People today travel more than their ancestors did.
B. The pleasure of travel has remained unchanged over time.
C. The modern travel industry has overshadowed the art of travel.
D. Governments have greatly improved travel facilities in recent years.
9. The author mentions “convent sisters accompanying school children to a cemetery” to illustrate ________.
A. the importance of educating the young about history
B. the significance of visiting historical sites during travel
C. the indifference children present in learning about the past
D. the boredom of overly detailed information during travel
10. Match the type of false travel with its description:
①Travel to improve one’s mind ②Travel for conversation ③Travel by schedule
a. Focusing on selfies rather than the experience
b. Following a strict itinerary without flexibility
c. Being overly serious and not truly relaxing
A. ①-a/ ②-c/ ③-b B. ①-c/ ②-b/ ③-a
C. ①-c/ ②-a/ ③-b D. ①-a/ ②-b/ ③-c
11. What might most probably be talked about in the next paragraph of this excerpt(节选)?
A. The true art of travel B. The benefits of guided tours
C. The history of travel industries D. The rise of modern travel tools
D
Today’s Olympic Games are a technological marvel. Slow-motion cameras capture the milliseconds-long difference between first and second place. Wearable sensors detect clean hits in fencing or tae kwon do.
Technology and sport are tightly linked, but controversy (争议) arises when technology enhances athletic performance, sometimes called “technological doping (兴奋剂).” This refers to using apparel (服装) or equipment to gain an unfair advantage.
Unlike drug doping, monitored by an international agency, legal apparel and equipment are decided by each sport’s governing body. It’s up to these bodies to put in place technical requirements for equipment use in their sport and enforce these requirements. But there’s no standardized rules across sports to disqualify an item based on its degree of enhancement, cost or exclusivity (排他性). Consequently, decisions to ban an item from competition are often made retroactively.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 94% of swimming gold medals were won by athletes wearing the Speedo LZR Racer swimsuit, engineered to reduce drag. It was worn by athletes who set 23 new world records. Many labeled it technological doping, so World Aquatics banned full-body swimsuits from competition.
The running equivalent (对等物) of the LZR Racer, Nike’s tailored shoe for Eliud Kipchoge, helped him achieve a sub-two-hour marathon in 2019. Its commercial version, Nike Vaporfly, led to numerous long-distance world records. These super shoes feature energy-returning midsole foam, a curved rigid plate, and a shape that rolls a runner forward, improving running economy by 4% on average. Other brands have since released super shoes, but some research suggests they don’t match Nike Vaporflys in performance. Differences in access to the best equipment have long been a source of inequality in elite sport (高水平竞技体育), worsened by technological doping, where brand exclusivity and high costs limit access.
Andy Miah, a professor at the University of Salford, believes this technological race is natural in elite sport. “Resisting technology in athletics may be fruitless, as elite performances are a combination of biological capability and technological training.” Miah says, “In fact, being a genius athlete is a very unnatural way of life — but that doesn’t make it bad.”
12. What does the underlined word “retroactively” in the third paragraph most likely mean?
A. Afterwards B. Ineffectively C. Ahead D. Temporarily
13. Which of the following is TRUE about the Speedo LZR Racer swimsuit mentioned in the passage?
A. It was allowed in all swimming competitions after 2008.
B. It was designed to reduce drag force and improve performance.
C. It was banned before any Olympic records were broken.
D. Its fabric played the most significant role in the drag reduction.
14. How does Andy Miah seem to feel about the integration of technology in elite sports?
A. Skeptical, fearing it could harm the integrity of sports
B. Supportive, seeing it as a natural progression in elite athletics
C. Indifferent, viewing it as a natural part of modern sports
D. Concerned, believing it might create an uneven playing field
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Nike, the Biggest Winner ever in History
B. The Very Two Sides to Technological Doping
C. Technology, an Unfair Competitive Advantage
D. A Form of Doping, or a Reality of Modern Sport?

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Socrates, Galileo, Marie Curie, Einstein ... What did these great thinkers have in common? They all practiced deliberate doubt and used it as a tool to improve their thinking and generate creative ideas.
____16____ It is about suspending our certainty and letting go of our preconceived (先入为主的) notions in order to explore new ideas and perspectives. When we’re certain of something, we tend to stop looking for alternative explanations or possibilities. ____17____ Doubt can, of course, be unsettling, but it can also result in a greater understanding of a subject and inspire fresh thoughts and insights.
____18____ But it doesn’t mean we should use it all the time. While deliberate doubt can be a valuable tool for generating creative ideas and exploring complex problems, it can also be counterproductive if it is not practiced in the right way.
It’s important to keep in mind that deliberate doubt is not constant doubt. If we’re continuously doubting our own ideas, we’ll be less likely to pursue them and see them through to completion. ____19____ We spend so much time doubting everything and end up not doing anything.
____20____ We can become self-critical and unsure of our abilities, which can undermine our self-esteem. As a result, we may be too afraid to try new things or take risks.
To avoid these traps, it’s important to strike a balance between doubt and certainty, and to use doubt as a tool to stimulate creative thinking and exploration, rather than as a means of undermining ourselves or others.
A Deliberate doubt can also lead to a lack of confidence.
B. But when we doubt, we’re forced to consider other perspectives.
C. In this case, deliberate doubt can prevent us from making decisions.
D. When practiced all the time, deliberate doubt can lead to a different belief.
E. By turning doubt into a deliberate process, we open ourselves to new possibilities.
F. Deliberate doubt is the practice of actively questioning our beliefs and assumptions.
G. Deliberate doubt can help us to develop a more open-minded approach to the world.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
When I was in high school, like many other teenage boys, I played in a band. Most of our families came from South Africa, so, we mixed our favorite hard rock and heavy metal songs with elements of South African rhythms and melodics. Although our band didn’t achieve widespread success, we were always able to touch the audience to the heart, feeling the unique impact of music.
At our school’s talent show, we weren’t the best, but we were good enough to come in third place, which made us more confident. Then, we decided to test the waters beyond our classmates. When we were booked for a charitable event at a large hospital, we were delighted. This opportunity was a thrilling breakthrough. Yet, beneath our excitement, we felt a sense of anxiety to perform for strangers — could our tunes really touch an audience unfamiliar with our sound?
For two weeks, we threw ourselves into intense practice sessions, meeting daily after school to practice hard and learn enough songs to fill a one- hour show.
On the concert day, we arrived early to check the stage. We felt nervous as we stood there and looked out at the hundred or so empty chairs lined up below us. After setting up and doing a quick sound check, we went backstage to have a soda and rest, doing anything to calm our nerves. While we were back there the hospital’s entertainment director came over to chat with us.
“Okay, boys, there are a couple of important details you should know,” she began. “Many in the audience today are suffering from severe physical and/ or mental disabilities. Don’t be surprised by that. These patients have very few chances to see live entertainment of any kind, so they enjoy any kind of musical act that we can provide. Just go ahead and play your regular show, and you’ll do fine.” After saying that, she left, joining into the theatre to help the volunteers and staff who were assisting the patients to their seats.

1. 续写的词数应为 150 左右;

To create a lasting solution, Alex and his team advocated for e-waste legislation (立法).

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. A

【8题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Travel used to be a pleasure, but now it has become an industry. No doubt there are greater facilities for traveling today than a hundred years ago, and governments with their official travel bureaus have developed the tourist trade, resulting in modern man traveling much more than his grandfather. Nevertheless, travel seems to have become a lost art. To understand the art of travel, one should first be aware of the different types of false travel.(旅行曾经是一种乐趣,但现在它已成为一种产业。毫无疑问,与一百年前相比,现在有更多的旅游设施,政府和他们的官方旅游局也发展了旅游业,导致现代人比他们的祖父旅行得更多。然而,旅行似乎已经成为一门失传的艺术。要了解旅行的艺术,首先应该了解不同类型的假旅行)”可知,第一段的主旨是现代旅游业使旅行艺术黯然失色。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“I have seen convent sisters accompanying school children to a cemetery, reading to them the dates of the dead, the age at which he married, and other such learned nonsense, which I am sure spoiled the pleasure of the entire trip for the children.(我曾看到修道院的修女们陪着学生们去墓地,给他们念死者的日期、结婚年龄,以及其他诸如此类的学术废话,我敢肯定,这破坏了孩子们整个旅行的乐趣)”可知,作者提到了“修道院修女陪同学生去墓地”,以说明旅行中过于详细的信息是多么无聊。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The first kind of false travel is travel to improve one’s mind, which has been overdone. I always doubt whether one’s mind can be so easily improved. If we are usually so serious as to be bent upon improving our minds, we should at least during a vacation empty the mind.(第一种虚假的旅行是为了修身养性的旅行,这种旅行已经言过其实了。我总是怀疑一个人的思想是否能如此轻易地得到改善。如果我们总是一本正经,一心要提高我们的智力,那么我们至少应该在假期里放空一下头脑)”可知,①旅行是为了提高头脑对应c.过于严肃,没有真正放松;根据倒数第二段“The second kind of false travel is travel for conversation, in order that one may talk about it afterward. Tourists are so busy with their cameras that they have no time to look at the places themselves.(第二种虚假的旅行是为了谈话而旅行,为的是以后可以谈论它。我在以茶和泉水闻名的杭州虎跑泉看到过游客把茶杯举到嘴边拍照。危险在于,人们花在茶的实际味道上的时间比花在照片本身上的时间要少。这类事情可能会让人着迷,尤其是那些带着相机的旅行者。游客们都忙于他们的相机,他们没有时间去看看自己的地方)”可知,②旅行是为了谈话对应a.专注于自拍而不是体验;根据最后一段“This foolish travel produces the third type of false travelers, who travel by schedule, knowing beforehand exactly how many hours they will spend in each city. Bound by the clock and run by the calendar as he is at home, he is still bound by the clock and run by the calendar while abroad.(这种愚蠢的旅行产生了第三种类型的假旅行者,他们按照时间表旅行,事先确切地知道他们将在每个城市呆多少小时。在国内,他受时钟的约束,按日历行事;在国外,他仍受时钟的约束,按日历行事)”可知,③按计划旅行对应b.严格按照行程安排,没有灵活性。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“To understand the art of travel, one should first be aware of the different types of false travel.(要了解旅行的艺术,首先应该了解不同类型的假旅行)”以及最后一段“This foolish travel produces the third type of false travelers, who travel by schedule, knowing beforehand exactly how many hours they will spend in each city. Bound by the clock and run by the calendar as he is at home, he is still bound by the clock and run by the calendar while abroad.(这种愚蠢的旅行产生了第三种类型的假旅行者,他们按照时间表旅行,事先确切地知道他们将在每个城市呆多少小时。在国内,他受时钟的约束,按日历行事;在国外,他仍受时钟的约束,按日历行事)”可知,最后一段讨论完了愚蠢的第三种旅行者,推测下一段最有可能讨论的是真正的旅行艺术。故选A。
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. B 15. D
根据第三段前三句“Unlike drug doping, monitored by an international agency, legal apparel and equipment are decided by each sport’s governing body. It’s up to these bodies to put in place technical requirements for equipment use in their sport and enforce these requirements. But there’s no standardized rules across sports to disqualify an item based on its degree of enhancement, cost or exclusivity 故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段第一句和第二句“At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 94% of swimming gold medals were won by athletes wearing the Speedo LZR Racer swimsuit, engineered to reduce drag. It was worn by athletes who set 23 new world records.(在2008年北京奥运会上,94%的游泳金牌都是由身穿Speedo LZR Racer泳衣的运动员获得的,这种设计可以减少阻力。创造了23项世界纪录的运动员穿过它。)”可知,Speedo LZR Racer泳衣的设计是为了减少阻力和提高性能。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句和第二句“Andy Miah, a professor at the University of Salford, believes this technological race is natural in elite sport. “Resisting technology in athletics may be fruitless, as elite performances are a combination of biological capability and technological training.”(索尔福德大学教授安迪•米亚认为,这种技术竞赛在精英体育运动中是很自然的。“在体育运动中抵制技术可能是徒劳的,因为优秀的成绩是生物能力和技术训练的结合。”)”可知,安迪•米亚对科技融入精英运动持支持态度,认为这是精英运动的自然发展。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Technology and sport are tightly linked, but controversy (争议) arises when technology enhances athletic performance, sometimes called “technological doping (兴奋剂).” This refers to using apparel (服装) or equipment to gain an unfair advantage.(科技和体育运动紧密相连,但当科技提高运动员成绩时,争议就会出现,有时被称为“科技兴奋剂”,指的是利用服装或设备获得不公平的优势。)”
To avoid these traps it’s important to strike a balance between doubt and certainty, and to use doubt as a tool to stimulate creative thinking and exploration, rather than as a means of undermining ourselves or others.
A. Deliberate doubt can also lead to a lack of confidence.

【答案】
A Debate on Labour Education Week
Our school is planning to carry out Labour Education Week, giving a rise to a heated debate among the students. Here’s where they disagree.
Some students warmly welcome the new policy, believing it will help enhance the concept of labour, and simultaneously acquire necessary life skills, which will benefit them all their lives. Other students don’t agree. They think it is just a waste of time. They can learn to work naturally when they grow up. Right now they should devote their precious time to studies.
Although both sides have valid points, I am just supportive of the new policy. Well organized, it can help us become physically and mentally healthy. I hope every student will actively participate.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】范文
Before long, it was time to begin our show. Fighting back our nerves, we stepped on to the stage and began our performance. Thanks to our thorough practice, our first song was almost flawless, but to our disappointment, there was no applause. Determined to connect with our audience, we pushed ourselves beyond our limits, pouring all our energy into our music. However, when each song came to an end, all we could see was stillness, silence, and vacant eyes staring blankly from an ocean of expressionless faces. It was heartbreaking and emotionally draining. Finally, unable to bear it any longer, we stormed off the stage, with angry thoughts and frustration bouncing around our heads.
“Don’t go! You don’t understand — they love your performance!” shouted the director, who rose up from her seat.He went on to explain that instead of failing to understand our performance with unique African style, the audience were unable to express their appreciation in a normal way due to their injuries and disabilities. He asked us to observe their faces closely. All at once, I had a moment of clarity. It was as if a light bulb had flickered on in my mind, and understanding dawned on my face. As I looked around, I saw the patients trembling with emotion, their eyes moistened with tears. It filled me with regret. Without hesitation, we continued with our performance. That night, we came to understand that no matter where we came from and who we were, music had the remarkable ability to connect us all. It had a unique power to touch the hearts of those lost in loneliness.
