But for the past two weeks, he hasn’t even called once. “A few of my staff mentioned that we hadn’t seen his order in a while. Then I found that it had been 12 days since he last ordered,” Domino’s manager Sarah said, feeling she could no longer ignore (忽视) Alex’s recent absence. Sarah has known Alex since 2009, when she started working at the Domino’s Pizza as a delivery driver and often made the short trip to Alex’s home about six minutes away. She knew Alex worked from home, and neighbors said he seldom left. She also knew that he suffered some health problems in the past. Something, Sarah worried, was wrong. Around 1 a.m. on May 8, Sarah sent delivery driver Sean to visit Alex’s home. Sean arrived at Alex’s home and knocked on the front door several times. There was no answer. He later noticed that the lights and the TV were on. When he called Alex’s phone, it went straight to voice mail. Sean drove back to the restaurant to tell Sarah and they decided to call 911. Soon, officers arrived at Alex’s home. So did Sarah and Sean. They heard a man calling for help from inside. Officers broke down the door and found Alex on the floor, suffering from a heart attack. One day later, they might have been too late. So is keeping an eye on regular customers (老顾客) part of Domino’s business plan? Helping others means helping ourselves B Rainforests (热带雨林) provide much of the world’s oxygen (氧气). People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans. These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows for the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water out of the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in (吸收) up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive. Cloud forests are also home to many different kinds of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet. These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions. 16. Where can you probably find cloud forests? A. In North America. B. Far from the equator. C. In an African country. D. At the foot of mountains. 17. How much rainfall is pulled in by the cloud forests in those areas every year? A. About 60 cm. B. About 108 cm. C. About 180 cm. D. About 300 cm. 18. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A Europe is short of plant types. B. Scientists are working on a list. C. Cloud forests are getting smaller. D. Cloud forests house many plants. 19. What will be discussed in the following part of the text? A. Ways to protect cloud forests. B. Goals of cloud forest protectors. C. Difficulties in planting new trees. D. Successes of getting wide support. 20. Where can we probably find the text? A. In a storybook. B. In a travel guide. C. In a chemistry textbook. D. In a geography magazine. C ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot (聊天机器人) tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with their homework. Some students even got high scores thanks to papers written by ChatGPT. Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create poems, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions. Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools don’t allow students and teachers to use ChatGPT on the school’s networks. The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on homework. 82% of the teachers are worried about its impact on education. “The tool can provide quick and easy answers to questions. It does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic (学术的) and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, the secretary of the New York City Department of Education. Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to block the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones, the New York Times reported. However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting policies on its proper use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far. Bhaskar Vira, from the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not sensible. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use. What we need to do is adapt our learning, teaching and examinations. That way, we can have honesty while recognizing the use of the tool.” 21. Why is the use of ChatGPT not allowed in some schools in the US? A. It takes the place of the teachers. B. It takes up most of the networks. C. Students may get wrong answers. D. Students use it to cheat on homework. 22. What does the underlined word “impact” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Importance. B. Impression. C. Influence. D. Safety. 23. What does Jenna Lyle think of ChatGPT? A. ChatGPT is necessary for academic and lifelong success. B. ChatGPT is not good for developing students’ minds. C. ChatGPT is world’s smartest AI chatbot tool so far. D. ChatGPT might provide the wrong information. 24. What did the educators in the US do to avoid the use of ChatGPT? a. They changed the forms of homework. b. They blocked students’ access to the tool. c. They suggested laws to ban the use of ChatGPT. d. They learned to recognize papers written by ChatGPT. A. ab B. ac C. bc D. cd 25. Which opinion is NOT mentioned in the report? A. Using ChatGPT makes students lazy in thinking. B. The complete ban on using ChatGPT is not wise. C.
