Every year, the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year awards celebrate food culture in all its aspects worldwide. Photographers from around the world submit entries for a competition celebrating the culture of food tradition, preparation, enjoyment, and social impact.
This year, a photographer from China, Yang Zhonghua, amazed the world with his amazing image Red Bean Paste Balls, capturing (捕获) the essence of a beloved traditional dish from his hometown of Xiangshan, Zhejiang province.
Yang’s photograph showcasing the red bean paste balls during Spring Festival preparation, won him not only the Champagne Taittinger Food for Celebration category but also the overall competition.
“Red bean paste ball is a national intangible cultural heritage from Xiangshan,” Yang said. “It is something that is a must-have for our New Year celebrations; it is a very necessary item of food for people from our town”
Yang, an experienced photographer of 40 years, didn’t enter the competition-for financial gain but to highlight his hometown’s culinary (烹饪的) treasure. “I wanted to draw attention to it because it’s special to us,” he added.

“When you laugh, you change and when you change, the whole world changes around you,” said Dr Madan Kataria.
World Laughter Day is an annual celebration that takes place all over the world, to raise awareness about the many healing(治愈) benefits of laughter. The event is celebrated on the first Sunday of May each year, and in 2024, it is on May 5th.

The first “World Laughter Day” took place in Mumbai, India, on 1lth of January 1998.
Laughter Clubs, which are free and open to all, are groups of people who regularly gather to practise simple laughter techniques that promote wellness and positivity. These clubs are typically led by a trained Laughter Yoga instructor, and the events usually last between 30 — 45 minutes.
Every year on World Laughter Day, hundreds of people gather worldwide to laugh together at Public parks, big squares or stadiums in their city by laughter club members, their families and friends. They have a variety of amusement programmes like music dance and laughter contests, etc. People with most infectious, natural and effortless laughter are the winners. During this day in India, laughter club members often do peace march. After walking some distance, they stop to do a few Laughter Yoga exercises and then move on. At the end of the march, they laugh together for 10 minutes or so and then read Dr Kataria’s message for World Peace.

Utah business owner Ed Wertz was looking for a way to stay active after his gym closed early in the pandemic. His wife suggested they try pickleball for a date night one evening. “We’ve played two to three times a week ever since,” the 7l-year-old says.
The couple joins more than 36 million Americans playing what has become the fastest-growing sport in the United States for three consecutive(连续的) years. “In a relatively short time, pickleball has already reached the levels of running, basketball and golf in popularity and the wide age range of people now playing indicates its growth will likely continue,” says Jim Edwards, a physical therapist and rehabilitation(康复) manager at Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation &. The sport was once thought of as a leisurely backyard activity for seniors and retirees, but data shows the average age of participants is now 35—with younger and younger players joining every year. “We now have people of all ages engaging in it, including celebrities like Taylor Swift, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Billie Eilish,” says Emily Hemendinger, a psychiatrist and outpatient clinical director at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Even star athletes like Patrick Mahomes, Serena Williams, LeBron James, and Tom Brady have publicly shown their love of the sport.

It was Friday morning and Mum had just sent the kids off to school. This Friday, she had a busy day ahead. She worked from home, cooking for special events like weddings. Today, she needed to deliver snacks to an office party by 5 p. m. Before starting, she enjoyed a cup of tea, a pastry, and the newspaper. She saw a photo of Dad’s brother, Jeff, whom the family liked to called the Wicked Uncle because he was totally carefree but amazingly lucky. He never had a proper job, but he owned several houses and even more cars, boats and motorcycles.
Mum sighed. “Jeff seems to live a charmed life... why can’t we share just a little bit of his good fortune? I’ll see what my instinct (直觉) says... it’s always fun to know in advance what sort of a day you’re going to have.” But today’s forecast was bad, telling her to stay in bed because everything would be against her.
Ignoring it, Mum started her day carefully, but everything went wrong. She ran out of ingredients, burnt the pie, and even tripped over the cat, Rudy, which had been sick for days.
But Friday the 13th, which is supposed to be an unlucky day, had been just fine for Jeremy and Jemima at school. Jemima had a swimming lesson which she loved and Jeremy was just glad because on Saturday he would be playing football. When they got home though, they found that Mum was crazily searching for her car keys to make the delivery Jeremy found them in the usual kitchen drawer, and they helped load the car. But Mum later got a call saying she delivered to the wrong office. Some lucky workers enjoyed a free feast, making her lose a client.

It was Friday morning, and Mum had just sent the kids off to school.
Dad came home tired after his car broke down and he had to take the bus. Rudy has diarrhea (腹泻) all over Jemima’s school project. Jeremy was the only one unaffected working on his computer.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Facing such bad luck, Mum warned the family to be careful. She suggested everyone should double-check their tasks and avoid making mistakes. Jemima promised to be more attentive with her schoolwork, while Jeremy offered to help Mum with her deliveries to ensure no more mix-ups. Dad also promised to have the car checked regularly to prevent future breakdowns. Rudy, despite feeling under the weather, wagged his tail as if he understood the need for caution. Together, the family rallied around each other, determined to turn the tide of misfortune.
Mum asked Uncle Jeff why he was luckier than them. Jeff chuckled, his eyes twinkling. “Luck, my dear, is a funny thing,” he said. “But I’ve learned that it often follows those who embrace life with open arms, even in the face of adversity. I may not have atraditional job, but I’ve always followed my passions and taken calculated risks. Plus, I’ve never let setbacks discourage me. It’s about attitude, my family. Focus on the good, and the good will find you.” Mum nodded thoughtfully, realizing that perhaps luck wasn’t just about chance but also about perseverance, positivity, and seizing opportunities. From that day on, she and her family made a conscious effort to do just that.
