Dear David,
Having reviewed your initial draft for the poster design competition on “Protecting Wildlife”, I’m writing to offer some suggestions for improvement.
Your design seems to lack a message that can motivate people to take action. Additionally, the quality of the images and the cluttered layout need to be improved.
Therefore, I suggest you use a concise and convincing message and high-quality images relevant to the theme. Meanwhile, you’d better simplify the layout by removing some unnecessary elements that distract attention from the message.
I hope my feedback is helpful. Best of luck with your design.

Jenny was so sad that tears began welling up in her eyes. She dried the tears and tried to block out the Christmas music that filled the entire hallway, not recalling her previous happy holiday. Suddenly, the phone rang, breaking up her moment of self-pity. She reached over and picked it up. “Hello?” “Hi, Jenny. This is Elsie.” Elsie greeted Jenny and asked when she would come back home on the phone. After hanging up, Elsie felt heart-broken. She immediately gathered her workers and told the bad news.
Before long, Elsie and her workers bought Jenny a ticket home. When knowing it Jenny was so amazed and shouted, “I’m going home! I’m going home!” She jumped up and down for joy. She began happily preparing for the final exams. On Christmas morning, she was awoken early by laughter. The smell of the holiday food and being able to stay with her family filled her with gratitude and love. The kindness of some special friends helped her, a lonely freshman, to have the best Christmas ever.

Los Angeles residents Joe Blackstone and Jamie Mohn have long recognized the lasting impact storytelling can have on a child’s life. Shortly after getting married, the couple began volunteering to read books to elementary school kids. Then, when they became parents themselves, they created the J3 Foundation to help organizations devoted to children’s growth. But after learning two-thirds of fourth graders who cannot read effectively end up on welfare, Blackstone and Mohn decided to take a more hands-on approach: in 2018, they launched J3’s Cozy Reading Club.
Each session of the two-hour, after-school program is free and includes outdoor activities and a healthy snack. Then, it’s time for some comfortable reading. After teachers read a book aloud and the group talks about the storyline freely, the kids find a spot to sit while grabbing a book of their choice to look through. In the end, they get to choose two books to borrow and take home.
In its first year, J3’s Cozy Reading Club served 15 students in one L. A.-area classroom. As of 2022, it had expanded to 17 schools across four different districts, impacting a total of at least 400 students, the vast majority of whom live in underserved communities. With impressive statistics backing it up 90% of the students have significantly improved their reading scores, and 95% say they’ve started reading for fun since taking part in the program——its founders have much to celebrate.
“Having more than 5,000 culturally relevant books available to them is so exciting. I love it when our students can see themselves and their classmates’ lives reflected in the books they are reading. The hope of changing one kid at a time makes all the work worthwhile,” Blackstone said.
Currently, J3 is in the process of raising $864,000, so the Cozy Reading Club can expand to an additional 24 Los Angeles schools and double its book collection to 10,000. This is worthwhile. The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) reported that 68% of U. S. fourth graders weren’t skilled at reading in 2022, up from 66% in 2019.
24.What can be inferred about Blackstone and Mohn?
A.They are children’s writers. B.They teach reading in a school.
C.They value kids’ development. D.They’ve donated much to charities.
25.What can children do in J3’s Cozy Reading Club?
A.Learn the history of books. B.Discuss a book’s plot.
C.Cook and have snacks. D.Buy interesting books.
26.What are the statistics in Paragraph 3 about regarding J3’s Cozy Reading Club?
A.Its great achievements. B.Its various services.
C.Its long-term goals. D.Its current programs.
27.Why does the author mention NAEP in the last paragraph?
A.To state reading is significant. B.To show J3 is a necessary cause.
C.To assess J3’s potential abilities. D.To criticize America’s education.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.B
根据第一段中的“Los Angeles residents Joe Blackstone and Jamie Mohn have long recognized the lasting impact storytelling can have on a child’s life. Shortly after getting married, the couple began volunteering to read books to elementary school kids. Then, when they became parents themselves, they created the J3 Foundation to help organizations devoted to children’s growth. (洛杉矶居民乔·布莱克斯通和杰米·莫恩早就认识到讲故事对孩子生活的持久影响。结婚后不久,这对夫妇就开始志愿为小学生读书。然后,当他们自己成为父母时,他们创建了J3基金会,以帮助致力于儿童成长的组织。)”可知,他们对孩子的成长非常重视。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“After teachers read a book aloud and the group talks about the storyline freely, the kids find a spot to sit while grabbing a book of their choice to look through. (在老师大声朗读一本书,小组自由地讨论故事情节后,孩子们找一个地方坐下,拿起一本他们选择的书来翻阅。)”可知,在J3的舒适读书俱乐部,孩子们可以自由地讨论某本书的故事情节。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“In its first year, J3’s Cozy Reading Club served 15 students in one L. A.-area classroom. As of 2022, it had expanded to 17 schools across four different districts, impacting a total of at least 400 students, the vast majority of whom live in underserved communities. With impressive statistics backing it up 90% of the students have significantly improved their reading scores, and 95% say they’ve started reading for fun since taking part in the program——its founders have much to celebrate.(在第一年,J3的舒适阅读俱乐部在洛杉矶地区的一个教室里为15名学生提供服务。截至2022年,该项目已扩展到四个不同地区的17所学校,影响了至少400名学生,其中绝大多数生活在服务不足的社区。令人印象深刻的统计数据表明,90%的学生的阅读成绩有了显著提高,95%的学生表示,自从参加了这个项目以来,他们开始以阅读为乐趣——该项目的创始人有很多值得庆祝的地方。)”可知,这些数据表明了这个阅读俱乐部所取得的成绩。故选A。

Though researchers have long known that adults build unconscious preferences over a lifetime of making choices between things that are essentially the same, the new finding that even babies engage in this phenomenon demonstrates that this way of justifying choice is intuitive (凭直觉的) and somehow fundamental to the human experience.
“The act of making a choice changes how we feel about our options,” said Alex Silver, a Johns Hopkins researcher. “Even infants who are really just at the start of making choices for themselves have this preference.”
The findings are published today in the journal Psychological Science. People assume they choose things that they like. But research suggests that’s sometimes backwards: we like things because we choose them. And, we dislike things that we don’t choose. “Adults make these inferences unconsciously,” said co-author Lisa Feigenson, a Johns Hopkins scientist in child development. “We justify our choice after the fact.”
This makes sense for adults in a consumer culture who must make random choices every day, between everything from toothpaste brands to styles of jeans. The question was when exactly people start doing this. So they turned to babies, who don’t get many choices so, as Feigenson puts it, are “a perfect window into the origin of this tendency.”
The team brought 10-to 20-month-old babies into the lab and gave them a choice of objects to play with; two equally bright and colorful soft blocks. They set them far apart, so the babies had to crawl to one or the other — a random choice. After the baby chose one of the toys, the researchers took it away and came back with a new option. The babies could then pick from the toy they didn’t play with the first time, or a brand new toy. Their choices showed they “dis-prefer the unchosen object.”
To continue studying the evolution of choice in babies, the lab will next look at the idea of “choice overload.” For adults, choice is good, but too many choices can be a problem, so the lab will try to determine if that is also true for babies.
28.What is people’s assumption about the act of making choices?
A.They like what they choose.
B.They choose what they like.
C.They base choices on the fact.
D.They make choices thoughtfully.
29.Why were babies selected as subjects for the study?
A.To help them make better choices.
B.To guide them to perceive the world.
C.To track the root of making random choices.
D.To deepen the understanding of a consumer culture.
30.What does the study on the babies show?
A.They like novel objects.
B.Their choices are mostly based on colors.
C.Their random choices become preferences.
D.They are unable to make choices for themselves.
31.What will the following study focus on?
A.The law of “choice overload”.
B.The problem of adults’ many choices.
C.Why too many choices can influence adults.
D.Whether babies are troubled with many choices.

由第一段“Though researchers have long known that adults build unconscious (无意识的) preferences over a lifetime of making choices between things that are essentially the same, the new finding that even babies engage in this phenomenon demonstrates that this way of justifying choice is intuitive (凭直觉的) and somehow fundamental to the human experience. (尽管研究人员早就知道,成年人在一生中在本质上相同的事物之间做出选择时会产生无意识的偏好,但即使是婴儿也会参与这一现象的新发现表明,这种证明选择合理性的方式是凭直觉的,而且在某种程度上是人类经验的基础)”和第三段中的“People assume they choose things that they like. (人们认为他们选择自己喜欢的东西)”可知,人们对选择行为的假设就是人们选择自己喜欢的。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。由第四段中的“So they turned to babies, who don’t get many choices so, as Feigenson puts it, are “a perfect window into the origin of this tendency.”(因此,他们转向了婴儿,婴儿没有太多选择,所以,正如费根森所说,这是“一个了解这种倾向起源的完美窗口”)”可知,选择婴儿作为研究对象是因为婴儿是追踪随机选择的根源。故选C项。
由第五段“The team brought 10-to 20-month-old babies into the lab and gave them a choice of objects to play with; two equally bright and colorful soft blocks. They set them far apart, so the babies had to crawl to one or the other — a random choice. After the baby chose one of the toys, the researchers took it away and came back with a new option. The babies could then pick from the toy they didn’t play with the first time, or a brand new toy. Their choices showed they “dis-prefer the unchosen object.”(研究小组将10到20个月大的婴儿带进实验室,让他们选择玩的物品;两块同样明亮多彩的软块。
由最后一段中的“For adults, choice is good, but too many choices can be a problem, so the lab will try to determine if that is also true for babies. (对于成年人来说,选择是好的,但选择太多可能是一个问题,因此实验室将尝试确定婴儿是否也是如此)”可知,接下来实验室研究重点是“婴儿是否会被太多选择困扰”。故选D项。

Feel exhausted after a party? Rather see one close friend than a group of acquaintances? Enjoy your own company? In our world, that makes you an introvert However, there’s another possible explanation — vertical attachment. If you are closer to your parents and family members than to your peers, you are vertically attached, which means you rely more on family for comfort.
If you are closer to your peers, then you are peer attached. We live in a peer-oriented world. We believe that having lots of friends means that we are well-adjusted. We put our kids in playgroups and daycare for peer interaction. We expect teenagers to want to hang out with their friends, thinking it is the natural way of things.
Result? Generations often feel worlds apart. We use different language, dress, and technology apps. Even if multiple generations are invited to the same party, the kids go to the basement playroom while the parents stay upstairs.
Vertically-attached individuals can feel out of place in this context, demonstrating the traces of introversion. Will they be exhausted after a party with same-aged acquaintances? Absolutely. Would they rather spend time with one close friend? Sure. Do they enjoy alone time? Yes, more than they enjoy time fitting in with peers.
It’s normal that many people need alone time to recharge. However, vertically-attached people often label themselves as introverted. They feel insecure that others have more friends and live richer lives. They claim that their family attachments arise from their loved ones being stuck with them.
If you feel these insecurities, know that there is nothing wrong with you, and you are not missing out on anything. Your attachment style is just different from the culture where you live. Have confidence in the strength of the relationships you have, whether it is with a mom who feels more like a best friend, or a grandmother with whom you can share anything. They are meaningful, enriching relationships, even if they look different from the cultural norm.
32.Who is vertically attached according to the text?
A.Mike, who feels at ease with his teachers.
B.Maggie, who enjoys film time alone at weekends.
C.Tom, who feels burnt out after a family get-together.
D.Lisa, who often turns to her dad when things are hard.
33.What is the popular belief among parents?
A.Younger generations should be self-disciplined.
B.Being sociable is a desired quality for their children.
C.Their children need more friends than they themselves do.
D.Different generations should have different circles of acquaintances.
34.What advice is given to vertically-attached people?
A.Be that as it may, just leave it as it is.
B.Never underestimate your inner power.
C.Hang out more with friends and adjust to it.
D.Treat others the way you want to be treated.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards vertically-attached people?
A.Biased. B.Objective. C.Unconcerned. D.Critical.

根据第一段中“However, there’s another possible explanation — vertical attachment. If you are closer to your parents and family members than to your peers, you are vertically attached, which means you rely more on family for comfort.(然而,还有另一种可能的解释——垂直依恋。如果你与父母和家庭成员的关系比与同龄人的关系更近,你是垂直依恋型的,这意味着你更依赖家庭来获得安慰。)”可知,垂直依恋类型的人更依赖父母和家庭成员。由此推知,在遇到困难的时候经常向父亲求助的Lisa很可能属于垂直依恋类型。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中“We believe that having lots of friends means that we are well-adjusted. We put our kids in playgroups and daycare for peer interaction. We expect teenagers to want to hang out with their friends, thinking it is the natural way of things.(我们相信有很多朋友意味着我们适应得很好。我们把孩子放在游戏小组和日托中心进行同伴互动。我们期望青少年想和他们的朋友出去玩,认为这是很自然的事情。)”可知,家长们普遍希望他们的孩子具备善于交际的品质。故选B项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“If you feel these insecurities, know that there is nothing wrong with you, and you are not missing out on anything. 35.推理判断题。通读全文,结合第五段中“However, vertically-attached people often label themselves as introverted. They feel insecure that others have more friends and live richer lives.(然而,垂直依恋型的人通常给自己贴上内向的标签。别人有更多的朋友,过着更富裕的生活,他们感到不安全。)”和最后一段中“If you feel these insecurities, know that there is nothing wrong with you, and you are not missing out on anything. Your attachment style is just different from the culture where you live. Have confidence in the strength of the relationships you have, whether it is with a mom who feels more like a best friend, or a grandmother with whom you can share anything. When you look ahead at the year to come, I hope you focus on all the positives even if the negatives exist, because positive thinking can help you get where you want to go.
Positive thinking is not the same as optimism. Being optimistic means believing that everything is going to work out great. But positive thinking is more than that. It’s a mindset or a way of looking at the world and what you do. 36
To think positively, first of all, we need to look at problems, mistakes and failures as normal. Imagine you bomb a big job interview. A negative thinker will be upset by the fact that he didn’t get the job. 37 He will analyze what he did and figure out how to do it better next time. And he’ll also think about what he did well and try to repeat and improve on those successes. This means focusing on the big picture.
One trick to positive thinking is to imagine how you’ll think back to things that are happening now. 38 There are bad things that happened last year that you can probably laugh about now. You understand what was a big deal and what was not. Try to do that in the present.
39 A negative thinker will focus on the past, especially past failures. But the past cannot be changed. It’s done and dusted. The future, however, is yet to be written. And that’s where the positive thinker will focus his attention.
Positive thinking is a mental habit. It takes practice. Sometimes, we have to remind ourselves to focus on the future and on possibility. 40 But if you can do it, there are some great payoffs: greater confidence, a better chance of success, better health condition as well as a better quality of life.
A.A positive thinker will learn from the experience.
B.Negative thinkers will look at failures as end points.
C.Positive thinking often means separating the past and the future.
D.It’s a belief in possibility, solutions to problems and the big picture.
E.Sometimes, it’s hard to learn from our failures or see the big picture.
F.We can see the power of positive thinking when it comes to problem-solving.
G.You know from experience that the passing of time brings a fresh perspective.

37.空前“A negative thinker will be upset by the fact that he didn’t get the job.(消极的思考者会因为没有得到那份工作而心烦意乱。)”说明了消极的思考者会如何做,空后“He will analyze what he did and figure out how to do it better next time. And he’ll also think about what he did well and try to repeat and improve on those successes.(他会分析他所做的,并找出下次如何做得更好。他也会思考自己做得好的地方,并试图在这些成功的基础上重复和改进。)”说明的是另一种人的做法,根据句意可知,这个人的做法很积极,应该说的是积极的思考者,A选项“A positive thinker will learn from the experience.(积极的思考者会从经验中学习。)”说明了积极的思考者会从经验中学习,和前面的消极的思考者的做法形成对比,且引出下文积极思考者的做法,因此承上启下,符合语境,故选A。
38.空前“One trick to positive thinking is to imagine how you’ll think back to things that are happening now.(积极思考的一个技巧是想象你将如何回想现在发生的事情。)”说明的是积极思考的一个技巧是回想发生过的事情,也就是从经历过的事情中学习,G选项“You know from experience that the passing of time brings a fresh perspective.(你从经验中知道,时间的流逝会带来新的视角。)”是从经历过的事情中了解到的东西,承接上文,下文“There are bad things that happened last year that you can probably laugh about now. You understand what was a big deal and what was not.(去年发生的一些糟糕的事情,你现在或许可以一笑置之。你知道什么是大事,什么不是。)”举例说明从经验中学习。故选G。
39.空格处是本段主题句,由空后的“A negative thinker will focus on the past, especially past failures. But the past cannot be changed. It’s done and dusted. The future, however, is yet to be written. And that’s where the positive thinker will focus his attention.(消极的思考者会关注过去,尤其是过去的失败。但过去是无法改变的。一切都搞定了。然而,未来还有待书写。这就是积极思考者会集中注意力的地方。)”可知,本段主要讲的是积极的思考者会关注未来,能分开过去和未来,C选项“Positive thinking often means separating the past and the future.(积极的思考通常意味着把过去和未来分开。)”
40.空前“Sometimes, we have to remind ourselves to focus on the future and on possibility.(有时候,我们必须提醒自己要关注未来和可能性。)”说明了我们必须提醒自己要关注未来和可能性,空后“But if you can do it, there are some great payoffs: greater confidence, a better chance of success, better health condition as well as a better quality of life.(但如果你能做到这一点,就会有很大的回报:更大的信心,更大的成功机会,更好的健康状况以及更好的生活质量。)”说明了如果能做到某事就会有很大的回报,空格处应该说明是什么事情,E选项“Sometimes, it’s hard to learn from our failures or see the big picture.(有时候,我们很难从失败中吸取教训,也很难看到大局。)”

When Jenny was in high school, she took a part-time job at a grocery store near the school. She was smart and nice while the boss Elsie and other workers there were friendly. As a result, Jenny made friends with them. After Jenny graduated, she gave up her part-time job, said goodbye to her friends, and went to a city far away to go to college, not knowing these friends would do her a big favor in the future.
Months later after Jenny was in college, the Christmas holiday approached. She applied herself to the final exams. Jenny’s eyes were aching from lack of sleep. She tried to rub(擦) the tiredness from her eyes, but failed. So she stood and stretched and looked through the window to watch the first snow of the season.
As she stared out of the window of her dorm, memories of once happily staying with her family members for the holiday hit her mind.
Feeling sad, Jenny sat back down at her desk and tried to focus on her studies. In just seven more days, the final exams would be over and all the students in the freshman college dorm would be going home except her. She would be moving temporarily to another dorm for the
Christmas break. Instead of enjoying homemade pies, cookies and roast turkey together with her family, Jenny would be eating alone in the school dining hall. It was not a prospect she looked forward to.
Jenny had no choice. She was a student from Pennsylvania attending college in Utah and her family of ten couldn’t afford to pay for her ticket home. She was able to attend college because of the several scholarships she had got.
Unable to focus her mind, Jenny stared back at the white snow dancing in the air. This would be her first Christmas away from home.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Jenny was so sad that tears began welling up in her eyes.

Before long, Elsie and her workers bought Jenny a ticket home.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

D.Critical.
