When I was at school, I hated art. Growing up in north Wales, I was not able to rate higher than an E in my final exams. I wasn’t too upset; I thought I wasn’t going to choose it as a career.
By the time I was about four, I started sleepwalking. At night, I used to go under the stairs and scribble (乱画) on the wall. When I was 15, I was no longer just making scribbles. I was drawing anything from pictures of Marilyn Monroe to unrealistic paintings. I showed some to my art teachers. They said: “Why can’t you do this in class?” It was something I struggled to understand myself. I tried so hard to draw when I was awake, practising and using the same tools. But no matter what I did, I was unable to recreate the drawings.
Once I left school, I became a nurse, mainly helping people with brain injuries. I also met my partner. He is unbelievably supportive of my art and sleepwalking habits—he often films me as I work. And when I begin to paint in my sleep, I’ll use any tools I can find, sometimes knives and forks. That’s the only thing that worries my partner—that I’ll accidentally hurt myself. I have gone to various sleep clinics to try to get to the bottom of what’s happening, but nothing out of the ordinary was found health-wise. Alcohol or lack of sleep does bring the sleepwalking on more, though, so I am careful about that.
I have learned to hug my unusual talent and set up my first art exhibition in 2007 at my local in library to raise money for cancer research. Within a week, I had 160 calls from different media outlets and organizations wanting to hear about my art. I was over the moon. I then decided to leave my very fulfilling job in nursing and become a full-time artist.
4. Why wasn’t the author upset about her art final exams?
A. She got used to her E in art. B. She had little interest in her study.
C. She was confident in herself. D. She was unwilling to work in art field.
5. What did art teachers think of the author’s sleepwalking paintings?
A. They felt worried about them. B. They expressed doubt about them.
C. They were indifferent about them. D. They showed confidence about them.
6. What does the underlined phrase “over the moon” probably mean in last paragraph?
A. Extremely pleased. B. Really concerned. C. Highly annoyed. D. Greatly shocked.
7. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A. She always enjoys painting. B. She is often injured by sleepwalking.
C. She has no trouble in sleepwalking now. D. She makes full use of her sleepwalking talent.
D 5. D 6. A 7. D

In February, the publishing company Puffin released (发行) new editions of some books by Roald Dahl that had been edited to remove or replace rude language. Dahl’s original work included terms that were once considered acceptable but that many people today find upsetting, such as describing characters as “fat” and “ugly”. Puffin said it changed those words and others so the books “can continue to be enjoyed by all.” Many people argued against the move, however, saying it amounted to censorship (bans on people’s ideas or language). Others say it’s good to remove outdated and hurtful language. What do you think? Should publishers revise old books?
Yes — times and language change. Society’s values are always changing. What would have been acceptable to say or do 50 years ago might not be OK anymore. People are right to point out when somebody says something hurtful, so the same should apply to books with rude language. A careful editor is able to successfully remove words or terms that upset people without changing what originally created by the author. The most important thing is that children (and adults) read books — and lots of them. Any minor changes to the text that make Dahl’s — or another writer’s--stories more accessible and inclusive are a good thing.
No — books should be left as they are. Censorship is dangerous because it limits what a person can say or how they express themselves. If we allow people to censor one author’s work, what’s to stop them from doing the same to every author’s work in the future? If somebody disagrees with an opinion or is angered by an idea, it doesn’t mean no one else should hear it. A healthy society hugs many different beliefs and points of view. If some people find certain words or descriptions upsetting, the best approach isn’t to ban or change them but to discuss, debate, and make people aware of why the material is hurtful. It can help people learn and understand.
8. Why did Puffin revise the books by Roald Dahl?
A. To replace some childish words. B. To maintain its popularity.
C. To have people express freely. D. To make people accept the books.
9. What is people’s reaction to Puffin’s move?
A. Showing full support. B. Showing total disagreement.
C. Holding varied opinions. D. Holding no special thoughts.
10. Which point of view would the “No” group agree with?
A. It is necessary to replace the outdated words. B. Books can attract more readers by updating.
C. It is important to adjust our way to read. D. Books should be treated the way they are.
11. In which part of a newspaper does this passage probably come from?
A. The big debate. B. Around the world. C. National news. D. Science and technology.
D 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据文章第一段中“Dahl’s original work included terms that were once considered acceptable but that many people today find upsetting, such as describing characters as “fat” and “ugly”. Puffin said it changed those words and others so the books “can continue to be enjoyed by all.”(达尔的原著包括一些曾经被认为是可以接受但今天许多人感到不安的术语,例如将角色描述为“胖”和“丑”。Puffin说,它改变了这些词和其他词,所以这些书“可以继续被所有人欣赏”。)”可知,Puffin要修改Roald Dahl的书是为了让人们接受这些书,故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段中“Many people argued against the move, however, saying it amounted to censorship (bans on people’s ideas or language). Others say it’s good to remove outdated and hurtful language. D
The white rhinoceros (犀牛) holds near threatened state due to destructive hunting. Scientists are working hard to stop this and they’re doing it with some pretty cool drone (无人机) tech.
One of the biggest dangers to endangered animals in the modern day comes from hunting, which claims the lives of hundreds of white rhinos every year. However, while rangers (护林者) and regular guarding can help in stopping hunters from certain areas, they are often well-armed and unafraid to fire upon those hoping to protect the rhinos. This is where drones come in—if preservation researchers work in these areas there would be a real danger of coming into contact with the hunters, and their lives might well be at risk. By having drones collect data, movement patterns and numbers of animals, biologists are able to avoid many of these risks.
But drones aren’t only used to collect information in dangerous areas—they can also be sent into the skies above difficult-to-reach areas to get data that would otherwise be tough to collect. The endangered animals are usually found in thick jungle, and organizing a team for exploration can be expensive, time-taking, and require a great deal of bodies and planning. Instead, researches can send drones over the forest to get data about the habitat of the animals, and perhaps even get high quality images of them. This information can be extremely valuable when it comes to an on-foot exploring, as researchers can get up-to-date information on the whereabouts of the animals as they move. In this situation, human-led surveys will still offer better results, but drones can play a huge part in the preservation process.
The downside currently is the cost, which can run into tens, if not thousands, of dollars. However, drone tech is still becoming a more achievable option in the fight against extinction.
12. What is the possible danger to preservation researchers according to the passage?
A. Suffering from hunger. B. Getting lost in the jungle.
C. Fighting with wild animals. D. Being attacked from hunters.
13. How do the drones help researchers in thick jungle?
A. By showing the direction. B. By providing real-time information.
C. By organizing a exploring team. D. By making plans to protect them.
14. What is the writer’s attitude towards the drone tech?
A. Cautious. B. Worried. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
15. What could be the suitable title of this text?
A. Drones’ Advantages B. Drones in Preservation
C. Drones against Danger D. Drones for the Rhinocerosss
D 13. B 14. C 15. B

根据第二段中“ However, while rangers (护林者) and regular guarding can help in stopping hunters from certain areas, they are often well-armed and unafraid to fire upon those hoping to protect the rhinos. (然而,虽然护林员和常规守卫可以帮助阻止某些地区的猎人,但他们通常装备精良,不怕向那些希望保护犀牛的人开枪。)”可知,即使护林人员和警卫可以帮助阻止猎人进入某些地区,但猎人通常装备精良,不惧怕开枪,可能对那些希望保护犀牛的人造成伤害。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Instead, researches can send drones over the forest to get data about the habitat of the animals, and perhaps even get high quality images of them. This information can be extremely valuable when it comes to an on-foot exploring, as researchers can get up-to-date information on the whereabouts of the animals as they move.(相反,研究人员可以派遣无人机飞越森林,获取有关动物栖息地的数据,甚至可能获得它们的高质量图像。当涉及到徒步探险时,这些信息是非常有价值的,因为研究人员可以在动物移动时获得最新的行踪信息。)”可知,研究人员可以通过无人机获得关于动物栖息地的数据,并且甚至可以获得高质量的图像。这些信息对于步行探索非常有价值,研究人员可以获取动物移动的最新信息。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, drone tech is still becoming a more achievable option in the fight against extinction.(然而,无人机技术在对抗灭绝的斗争中仍然是一个更可行的选择。)”
根据第一段“The white rhinoceros (犀牛) holds near threatened state due to destructive hunting. Scientists are working hard to stop this and they’re doing it with some pretty cool drone (无人机) tech.(由于毁灭性的狩猎,白犀牛处于濒临灭绝的状态。科学家们正在努力阻止这种情况的发生,他们正在使用一些非常酷的无人机技术。)”以及第三段中“The endangered animals are usually found in thick jungle, and organizing a team for exploration can be expensive, time-taking, and require a great deal of bodies and planning. Instead, researches can send drones over the forest to get data about the habitat of the animals, and perhaps even get high quality images of them.( 濒临灭绝的动物通常在茂密的丛林中被发现,组织一个探险队可能是昂贵的,耗时的,需要大量的人员和计划。相反,研究人员可以派遣无人机飞越森林,获取有关动物栖息地的数据,甚至可能获得它们的高质量图像。) ”以及通读全文可知,文章主要介绍了无人机在保护濒临灭绝的白犀牛方面发挥了重要作用,同时,在保护其他濒临灭绝的动物中无人机还可以被派往厚密丛林中收集数据,提供实时信息。因此,B选项“Drones in Preservation(在保护中使用无人机)”是文章合适的标题。故选B。

The English phrase “it’s a small world” has been commonly used, and the recent coronation (加冕) of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London on Saturday made me appreciate ___36___ (it) real meaning.
I was one of those who were viewing this once-in-a-life-time event on television. This meant that I literally had a front-row seat to a ceremony ___37___ has been virtually unchanged for centuries. The coronation of a new king is a significant moment in the life of many British people, but until the 20th century, the opportunity to see this ___38___ (impress) event was limited to a select group of people. All that was changed by the development in mass ___39___ (communicate), particularly the development of cinema and television.
In fact, the first time that___40___ “ordinary” person in Britain could have seen, or heard the coronation was in 1937. In that year, film cameras ___41___ (allow) inside London’s Westminster Abbey ___42___ (record) the event for the first time. ___43___, what was special about the coronation of King Charles III was that this centuries-old ceremony had a global audience.
The fact that I could sit on my sofa, many ___44___ (thousand) of kilometers away from those events in London on Saturday and see the coronation as it actually happened really brought this fact home to me, ____45____ (make) me truly appreciate that we are now really living in such a “small world”.

37. that/which
38. impressive
39. communication

be allowed to do sth.“被允许做某事”,为固定搭配,故填to record。

It’s a rare thing, in this day and age, to move into a new neighborhood and find yourself welcomed by the local inhabitants. However, there are some places out there where the neighbors are as sincerely friendly and welcoming.
Lily and Jack Green met in 2011. It was very nearly “love at first sight” and they married in 2013 and moved to Auburndale three years later. The Greens had found themselves welcomed into the neighborhood with truly open arms. The happy residents had come over with plates of cookies, dishes, and the like. In short, the neighborhood they’d moved to was the type of place where you’d be happy to raise a family.
Lily was pregnant before the move and within three months, they gave birth to Sam. Unfortunately, something was wrong. A week or so of tests showed that little Sam had been born completely deaf. The Greens were completely shocked and they knew that raising Sam was going to take some serious work and commitment.
The neighborhood was still excited to welcome little Sam into their life, of course, but they were mindful of what a struggle the situation was for her parents. “You see Sam and it’s discouraging not to be able to say, ‘Oh, I love your pretty pink pants.’ We wanted to take that away. We didn’t want them to have that extra struggle if there was anything we could do about it.” one of the neighbors explained. So the neighbors wanted to do something to make things easier for the family. As Sam was only a week old at the time, they took some time to make a decision.

Within a week I had 160 calls from different media outlets and organizations wanting to hear about my art.

D
The white rhinoceros (犀牛) holds near threatened state due to destructive hunting Scientists are working hard to stop this and they’re doing it with some pretty cool drone (无人机) tech.

A. By showing the direction. B. By providing real-time information.
C. By organizing a exploring team. D. By making plans to protect them.
14. What is the writer’s attitude towards the drone tech?
A. Cautious. B. Worried. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
