The Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) (一带一路) first proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, has developed into a trans-continental (跨大陆的) trade and infrastructure network (基础设施网络建设) covering the Eurasian continent, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the South Pacific region. Its reach extends to some 4.4 billion people, around 65% of the world’s population. Modern and groundbreaking in its global outlook the Belt and Road is actually deeply rooted in history, with the ancient Silk Road dating back more than 2,500 years when camel trains transported everything from spices to silk between East and West. Today those camels have been replaced by thousands of planes, trains and ships, with trade volume (贸易额) between China and its Belt and Road partners hitting $6 trillion in the past five years. Trains can now travel 12,000 kilometers from Yiwu to London faster than ships. Connecting a huge range of cultures, languages, and people of diverse backgrounds, the Belt and Road Initiative is also a major platform for cultural exchanges. About 60000 African students are taking courses in Chinese universities up from just 2,008 in 2003. By April 15,2019 126 nations and 29 international organizations had signed Belt and Road cooperation (合作) documents with China.
So how does a project as huge and international as the BRI work? It’s all about cooperation and dialogue. Every two years, the Belt and Road Forum (论坛) for International Cooperation (BRF) is held, providing forums and meetings for thousands of delegates (代表) from all around the world, to discuss progress and moving forwards In 2017, the first-ever BRF was held in Beijing. 29 national leaders and more than 1,600 participants (参与者) attended that event, the biggest of its kind under the Belt and Road framework. More than 270 concrete results were achieved in five key areas, namely policy, infrastructure trade, finance and people-to-people connectivity. This April, the second forum took place in Beijing again. This time, there were many more participants than the previous one, with thousands of delegates from over 100 countries and international organizations attended.
10.The BRI is a huge and national project.
11.Over 25 centuries ago, camels were trained to carry things along the ancient Silk Road instead of planes, trains and ships.
12.The number of African students studying in China is increasing slowly now.
13.The BRI is a project about dialogue and cooperation.
14.According to the report, there will be more and more participants to attend the BRF in the future.

The Silk Road is a historically important international trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea(地中海). It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2, 000 years.
The ancient road started from Chang’an (now Xi’an)and ended in Eastern Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6, 500kilometers long and went across one-fourth of the planet.
The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade, ceramics and iron went west to Rome. And from the West came glass, gems and food like carrots.
The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was more than an ancient international trade route. Besides trade, knowledge about arts, science and literature, as well crafts and technologies was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.
Today, China is trying to build the “21st Century Marine(海洋的)Silk Road”. With the help of APEC held in Beijing in November 2014, the dream of the One Belt One Road(the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st Century Marine Silk Road”)(一带一路)is coming true.

Xi’an China
Xi’an is no doubt one of the most popular tourist attractions in China. Every year, millions of travellers visit the Terracotta Army (兵马俑) of Emperor Qin Shihuang, which is one of the most amazing historic sites in the world.
As one of China’s great former capitals, Xi’an grew to be the largest city in the world during the Tang Dynasty, a golden age of art and poetry. Chang’an, as it was known at the time, was the starting point of the Silk Road, which connected China to the world. It was here that Xuan Zang set out on his famous travels, which became the basis of Journey to the West. Historic sites from that time include the two Wild Goose Pagodas and the remains of the Daming Palace, which was the centre of the Tang court (朝廷).
Today, Xi’an is a modern city, at the heart of China’s Belt and Road initiative (倡议), but its long history can be seen everywhere: it is one of the few cities in the world that still have city walls. The wall, almost 14 kilometres long, was originally built for guarding against danger, but nowadays, it’s a great way to experience Xi’an: from here, you can get an amazing view of the city.

For most people, Egypt is a place they’ve seen only in Hollywood films. They see it as a mysterious country full of pyramids (金字塔) and ancient curses (诅咒).
But in fact, Egypt has made many contributions to today’s world throughout its long and rich history.
One of these contributions is a style of writing known as hieroglyphs(象形文字). Egyptians wrote with characters that looked like people, animals and objects. Some experts believe that hieroglyphs are like ancient Chinese characters.
Another Egyptian marvel (奇迹) is the Suez Canal (苏伊士运河), which was built in the 19th century. This waterway shortens the journey from the North Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. It has made worldwide maritime trade a lot easier.

There are Chinese products in almost every Egyptian home, from toys to clothes. Many people there enjoy watching Chinese TV shows. More students are starting to learn the Chinese language, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
And Egypt’s participation (参与) in China’s Belt and Road Initiative will make their ties even stronger. While speaking with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi in 2016, President Xi Jinping suggested that China and Egypt should work together to make Egypt a “hub” (中心) for the Belt and Road.
